HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT: Katherine G. Johnson, Physicist and Mathematician Katherine G. Johnson is a pioneer in American space history. The physicist and mathematician made contributions to the United State’s aeronautics and space programs with the early application of digital electronic computers at NASA. Known for accuracy in computerized

celestial navigation, Johnson received bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and French from West Virginia State University before conducting technical work at NASA that spanned decades.

During this time, she calculated the trajectories, launch windows, and emergency back-up return paths for NASA flights from Mercury though the Space Shuttle programs. Her calculations were critical to the success of these programs, including the NASA missions of John Glenn and Alan Shepard, and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon. Johnson also executed calculations for plans for a mission to Mars. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE: Andrea C. White, Ph.D., associate

professor of theology and culture at Union Theological Seminary in New York, will serve as the Baccalaureate speaker for the class of 2017. Dr. White is executive director of the Society for the Study of Black Religion and a founding member of The Carter Center’s Scholars in Action which addresses genderbased violence against women and girls. Her research specializes in womanist theology, critical theory and postmodern religious thought.

Prior to her appointment at Union, Dr. White served on the faculty at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology and the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. An ordained American Baptist minister who served as pastor of Aldrich Baptist Church, she earned her doctorate in theology from The University of Chicago Divinity School, masters of divinity degree with a concentration in philosophy of religion from Yale Divinity School, and a bachelor’s degree with honors in philosophy from Oberlin College. The Baccalaureate service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 9 a.m. on the Spelman Oval.

NE WS Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced 3-K for All, the most ambitious effort in U.S. history to provide universal, free, fullday, high-quality early childhood education for every three-year-old child regardless of family income.

3-K for All will build on the success of Pre-K for All – through which the City has more than tripled the number of four-year-olds enrolled in free, full-day, high-quality Pre-K – and is part of a broader effort to create a continuum of high-quality early care and education programs for New York City children from birth to five years old. Research has found every dollar invested in high-quality early education saves taxpayers as much as $13 longterm.

New York City is starting the path to 3-K for All for fall of 2017, aiming to serve over 11,000 three-year-olds in new and enhanced free, full-day, high-quality seats. This includes the first year of a two-year expansion to create hundreds of new, free, fullday, high-quality seats in District 7 in the South Bronx and District 23 in Brownsville. By fall of 2018, we will have a seat for every threeyear-old living in those districts that wants one, and project we will serve 1,800 children in those two districts – triple the number enrolled today.

At the same time, we will help families enroll in existing seats for 3-year-olds in New York City and provide additional support and enhance quality for over 11,000 three-year-olds currently enrolled in those will also strengthen existing programs serving children from sixweeks-old through three-years-old.

3-K for All is part of the Mayor’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda, which aims to ensure that by 2026, 80 percent of students graduate high school on time and two-thirds of graduates are college ready. Remembering History During

NATIONAL MINORITY HEALTH MONTH

by Sarah Rheinhardt worked to establish a dozen free community health clinics nationwide and a free breakfast program that grew to serve 20,000 children in 19 cities around the country.

In April of 1915, Booker T. Washington proposed “National Negro Health Week,” recognizing that “without health and long life, all else fails.” His idea gradually evolved into observing the month of April as National Minority Health Month to raise awareness and eventually help eliminate the health disparities facing racial and ethnic minorities.

National Minority Health Month offers a platform to call attention to the deep injustices experienced by people of color and an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of black public health champions who have worked to protect and advance the health of marginalized communities.

If we trace history, it’s clear that the medical profession didn’t think the Hippocratic Oath Primum non nocere, or “first, do no harm,” applied to citizens of color. The glaring truth is that science does not operate in isolation from systems of deeply rooted racism and oppression that plague scientific, political, and cultural institutions in the United States—particularly when it comes to health. Such systems have been used to justify unfathomably cruel and inhumane medical experimentation performed on enslaved black people, which were only replaced in the Jim Crow era by pervasive medical mistreatment that resulted in untold fatalities. Racist medical practices were tolerated, if not explicitly condoned, by professional organizations such as the American Medical Association through the late 1960s. The government-funded Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which

effectively denied syphilis treatment to nearly 400 black men over the course of 40 years, ended in 1972, but a formal apology was not issued for this deliberate violation of human rights until 1997. And still, in doctors’ offices and hospital rooms across the United States today, race remains a significant predictor of the quality of healthcare a person will receive.

But perhaps just as troubling as the underpinnings of racism in science and medicine is the relative obscurity of racism in the historical narratives propagated by dominant white culture. That modern medicine was built on the backs of marginalized populations is well understood and indeed has been lived by many, but it is far from being accepted as universal truth. Meanwhile, the contributions of black scientists, doctors, and health advocates have routinely been eclipsed by those of their white colleagues or are absent entirely from historical records.

These advocates range from highprofile figures like Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th U.S. Surgeon General who shifted the national focus on health from a treatmentbased to a prevention-based perspective, to grassroots activists like Detroit’s Malik Yakini, who in 2006 founded the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network to ensure that Detroit communities could exercise sovereignty and self-determination in producing and consuming affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.

They include Byllye Avery, who in 1974 established the Gainesville

Women’s Health Center to expand critical access to abortions and other health care services to black women, and Dr. Camara Jones, former president of the American Public Health Association, who skillfully brought the impact of racism on health and well-being to the forefront of the public health agenda. These figures even include Bobby Seale. Though he may be best remembered as the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Seale

It is imperative that we not only highlight the health disparities experienced by communities of color that have resulted from interlocking structures of oppression, but also recognize the leaders who have stood on the frontlines demanding change. This must not happen only during National Minority Health Month, but continuously.

The work of these leaders both underscores a powerful legacy of social and political advocacy among marginalized communities and serves as a powerful reminder of how far America has to go.

BOOM SHOCK FITNESS Gets Brides Fit For Wedding Day Every year in the United States, more than 2 million couples get married, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. For some, it’s a special rite of passage and a chance to improve certain areas in life, including one’s health.

That was the case for Cordnesha Mosby. For her, signing up for a customized Boom Shock Fitness workout plan was a chance to embark on a long-term commitment to wellness – beyond her special day. Founded in 2010 by Stephanie Jones, a certified personal trainer and group fitness coach, Boom Shock specializes in empowering women to meet their fitness or wellness goals.

“I told Stephanie that although I have a wedding coming up, I did not want a quick fix. I didn’t have a magic number that I wanted to [achieve],” says Mosby, whose nuptials are scheduled in September. “What I did tell her was

that I wanted to have a trainer to help me jumpstart my journey in becoming a healthier me.”

Brides with limited time, but ready to achieve results, can get a customized Boom Shock workout routine and food plan that helps them meet wellness or dress-size goals. Stephanie, who roller skates for fun, seeks to empower her clients, who are often well equipped for the challenge but need guidance. “I don’t allow my clients to use me as a crutch. You going to Red Lobster, you don’t have to call me. You already know what NOT to eat,” says the University Maryland graduate and certified massage therapist. “It’s about growth within yourself, learning your body and what works for you.”

Stephanie also assists women struggling with high blood pressure, diabetes, bad knees or back pain.

These are women determined to defy a doctor’s odds against their

ability to be healthy. “I also target that person who does not know what the heck to do,” says the 38-year-old, full-time entrepreneur, “too much going on, no balance; don’t know what to eat; and don’t know what to do to work out. I get excited when my clients come to me like this, and then notice improvement. ” When asked how she came up with the name Boom Shock Fitness for her company, Stephanie laughs and shares, “I went through a phase where whenever I got excited, I would say, ‘boomshockalocka!’ I did this for about a year.” She adds, “Then, I was having lunch with one of my girlfriends and said, ‘boomshockalocka!” She said, “That’s it!” Stephanie says her initial reaction was – no. However, eventually she landed on Boom Shock Fitness.

FITNESS and NUTRITION EDUCATION Conference Held As part of the yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Jessie Trice Community Health Center (JTCHC) will host a Fitness and Nutrition Education Conference.

The event takes place on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Florida International University (FIU) North Campus – Kovens Conference Center located at 3000 NE 151st Street in North Miami, FL. “This conference will bring awareness to the importance of proper nutrition and regular physical activity for our overall health and well-being,” says Annie Neasman, President and CEO of the Jessie Trice Community Health Center.

‘MOONLIGHT’ Creators Honored With Street Sign Hundreds attended the celebration event honoring Liberty City’s own, Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, creators of the awardwinning film Moonlight, and the movie’s cast, crew and producers at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (AHCAC) on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson brought her impressive 5000 Role Models on stage as she read the entry into the U.S. congressional record honoring Moonlight and its creators.

Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson lead the crowd from the Outdoor Stage Presentation to a surprise unveiling of the actual Moonlight street sign in its now permanent location -- the NW 22nd Ave side of the Center. There, Moonlight cast member Sharif Earp commented that kids will see the sign and instead of picking up a gun, they will know that they can pick up a camera or book and go the Moonlight Way. During the Outdoor Stage Presentation Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney jointly presented ceremonial checks to youth on stage in the amount of a $40k donation for the purpose of starting a cinematic arts program at the AHCAC. McCraney, an alumnus of the Center, thanked its director, Marshall L. Davis, Sr. for finding the funds that gave him access to center programs as a child from an impoverished home.

The audience was captivated by the spectacular on-stage performances by talent from Entourage, the Center’s Apprenticeship Program that offers a unique stage and music concert experience for aspiring vocalists.

Brad Pitt visited the Center for the filming of the scenes in the facility’s dance studio, music hall entrance and a classroom. Auditions were held in the Center’s theater and some of the actors affiliated with the Center were cast. The Center and its director, Marshall Davis, a mentor to McCraney, are listed in the movie credits.

The City College Center for the Arts (CCCA) and the City College of New York Jazz Program present the 2017 CUNY Jazz Festival featuring Hammond Organ guru Dr. Lonnie Smith. The two-day festival includes free master classes with saxophonist Jon Gordon and vocalist René Marie, performances by student ensembles from schools throughout the City University of New York (CUNY), and a free concert with Smith, a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) jazz master. The event culminates with a gala concert featuring the CCNY Student Jazz All-Stars opening for Dr. Lonnie Smith and his trio, on May 5 at 7:30pm. The events will be held at historic Aaron Davis Hall.

Past CUNY Jazz Festival guest artists include guitarists John Abercrombie and Adam Rogers, bassist John Patitucci, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, vocalist Luciana Souza, saxophonists Dick Oatts Chris Potter, Dave Liebman, and Billy Drewes, pianist Kenny Werner, trumpet players Ralph Alessi and Marvin Stamm, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

The 17th Annual CUNY Jazz Festival kicks off on Thursday, May 4, with a performance by the CCNY Faculty

Jazz Ensemble at noon, followed by a master class featuring Gordon and performance by student ensembles.

That evening at 7:30, Dr. Lonnie Smith joins the CCNY Large Jazz Ensemble for a free concert followed by a jam session. On Friday, May 5, the festival continues at noon with student performances and a master class featuring vocalist René Marie.

The festival wraps up with a gala concert featuring the CCNY Student Jazz All-Stars followed by the Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio at 7:30 p.m.

Participating schools joining CCNY ensembles this year include Hunter College, Queens College, Lehman College, York College and The College of Staten Island. Events are free with the exception of the gala concert, which is $15 for General Admission and free with CUNY ID. Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for more than five decades, he has been featured on more than 70 albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry. Consequently, he has often been hailed as a “Legend,” a “Living Musical Icon,” and as the most creative jazz organist. Jazz Times magazine describes him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban.” Always ahead of the curve, Smith enjoys a fan base that is truly worldwide.

Smith was introduced to music through the gospel he heard at the church where his mother sang. He was part of several vocal ensembles in the 1950s, and played trumpet and other instruments at his hometown school in Buffalo, NY. In the late 1950s, Art Kubera, a Buffalo-area music store owner, gave Smith his first organ on which he learned to play and develop his musical style. In addition to being influenced by the sound of the church organ, he was inspired by organists such as Wild Bill Davis, Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith.

Among the honors bestowed upon Smith are DownBeat’s Best Organist honors (1969) and numerous Organist/Keyboards Player of the Year awards by the Jazz Journalists Association. Both the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame (2009) and Jazz Organ Fellowship (2011) elevated Smith to the ranks of their honorees. Smith was recently named 2017 NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.
