JOIN MANDELA’S WIDOW TO DISCUSS PLIGHT OF SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN By Fern Gillespie To celebrate the first New York visit by South Africa’s former first lady Graca Machel since the death of her husband Nelson Mandela, BET held a special news taping for BET at My Image Studios (MIST Harlem) on May 15 hosted by BET journalist Michaela Angela Davis. The discussion focused on “Women and Youth: Driving Development in Southern Africa” with panelists Danny Glover, actor and human rights activist; Jo Menell Oscarnominated filmmaker and Donna Katzin, founding executive director of Shared Interest. Machel is the widow of both former South African president Mandela and Mozambican president Samora Machel, who died in a plane crash in 1986. When she married Mandela in 1998, Machel became the only woman to have been first lady of two countries. The Graca Machel Trust deals with issues from child marriages to women entrepreneurs. “Millions of girls have not been able to realize their dreams fully,” she explained. “Girls forced into marriage at age 8, 9 , 10. I’m fighting to overcome child marriage.” Donna Katzin, at the economic development nonprofit Shared Interest, has approximately 2.2 million beneficiaries who are entrepreneurs in Southern Africa. “Women and youth in Southern Africa are beginning to transform their communities, countries and region,” she said. “From small businesses and farms to townships and cities – they are quietly making news and making history” Following the panel, a reception was hosted by Madiba Harlem,

the South African restaurant which is an integral part of MIST Harlem. “We are honored to welcome Graça Machel to MIST Harlem to discuss the urgent issue of women and children in South Africa,” said Carlton Brown, owner and managing partner of MIST Harlem. “Our institution has a mission to be a space that gives voice to and explores the larger issues of culture, justice, equality, education and economic development of the African Diaspora. These are issues that affect us all with no regard to

which continent we trace our histories.” The panel discussion was sponsored by BET, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Shared Interest and My Image Studios in Harlem (MIST Harlem).
