NAACP TO HONOR PHILANTHROPIC WORK TO BREAK CYCLE OF POVERTY
The NAACP announced today that John Legend will be presented with the NAACP President’s Award at the 47th NAACP Image Awards. The NAACP President’s Award, chosen by NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks, is bestowed in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service. Past honorees include Van Jones, President Bill Clinton, Soledad O’Brien, Ruby Dee, Muhammad Ali, the Founding Members of the Black Stuntmen’s Association, Kerry Washington, and last year, Spike Lee. “John Legend is a passionate champion for both social justice and quality education for all,” stated Cornell William Brooks, President and CEO, NAACP. “His contributions to music and artistic creativity have been recognized by peers and fans worldwide, and he is greatly admired for his humanitarian efforts through his Show Me Campaign. NATIONAL NAACP SPEAKS OUT ON FLINT, MICHIGAN WATER CRISIS
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) released the following statement regarding the Flint, Michigan water crisis:
“It is not extraordinary or unrealistic to expect the water our children drink and bathe in, the water we use to prepare meals to nourish and sustain our bodies, to be free of toxic chemicals. To expose an entire city of nearly 100,000 residents, many of them children, to toxic lead is, if not criminal, is at the very least inhumane. “An investigation is a positive and much needed step in the right direction, but immeasurable damage has already been done by exposing thousands of Flint residents to the debilitating, irreversible, even life-threatening effects of the buildup of lead in one’s system. And the devastating impact on young children can result in mental, physical and developmental damage that can last a lifetime.” “The NAACP has been fighting for the rights of Flint residents since

GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR THE OBESITY CRISIS? By Laurie Demeritt, CEO The Hartman Group
Acceptance of being overweight is greater today than in 2010 as Americans increasingly see themselves primarily responsible for their own weight, although belief in the role of genetic predisposition is significant and growing. Most Americans continue to be overweight, with a substantial minority being obese (32 percent) or extremely obese by CDC standards. Yet consumers’ views on being overweight are changing. The latest report from consumer trends experts The Hartman Group, Weight Management & Healthy Living 2015, found there is greater acceptance of being overweight as a society than in the 1950s, when modern dieting culture began. Since most American adults are overweight today (63 percent), being “heavy” is now the social norm and much less stigmatized than in the past. The new enemy for consumers is obesity, not simply being overweight. “Over the past ten years, overweight and/ or obese Americans have come to accept their weight status as defined by the CDC,” said Laurie Demeritt, CEO of The

Hartman Group. “This is a huge shift in self-awareness and in willingness to accept stigmatized terms like ‘obese’ as personal labels. When individuals accept that they have a problem like obesity, it forms the platform for actual behavioral change.” Over half of U.S. consumers (56 percent) are trying to lose weight, and the Weight Management & Healthy Living report found that consumers continue to see themselves as primarily responsible for their own weight and are more holistic in approaches to managing weight. More than eight in ten consumers (85 percent) say they are solely responsible for their own weight. “Optimizing one’s health, especially as one ages, is a primary driver of weightmanagement behavior,” said Demeritt. “As a result, we have evolved from a weight-management culture of purely crash dieting to a culture more open to permanent dietary alterations along with a set of lifelong healthy guardrails.” While Americans increasingly see themselves as responsible for their own weight — almost nine in ten consumers (88 percent) agree with the statement “I am personally responsible for choosing the right foods, not manufacturers” (an increase of five percentage points from 2010) — the belief in the role of genetic predisposition is significant and growing as well. More than one-third of consumers (38 percent) say that genetics is behind their current weight — an increase of eight percentage points from 2010.

Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) has filed rate proposals for its electric and gas delivery services beginning in 2017 to fund infrastructure investments that will give customers greater control over their electric usage and bills; improve service reliability, and help integrate new clean energy technologies into the grid. The company’s gas main replacement program will be accelerated, enhancing safety and facilitating conversion of oil heating systems to cleaner natural gas.

Ivey said the company’s primary goals are to build the infrastructure needed to continue providing safe and reliable electric and gas service to customers at a reasonable cost, while implementing new technology and promoting energy efficiency and renewables.
The company’s proposals, which would take effect January 1, 2017 subject to approval by the New York State Public Service Commission, would be the first increase in overall delivery rates in nearly five years for electric service and over four years for gas. In addition to stable delivery rates, customers have benefited recently from an overall decline in oil and natural gas prices, which have helped lower electric supply and heating costs.

Furthermore, AfricanAmericans attend the movies on average more often than whites, spending more than $1.1 billion annually on movie tickets.
The leaders of three leading national civil rights organizations announced they will request a meeting with the trustees of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and other film industry leaders. The National Urban League, the National Action Network and the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation released the following statement in response to the ongoing struggle for diversity in the Academy’s awards nominations: Following an awards nomination process that saw the nomination of no actors of color and no women writers, the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences promised a greater push for diversity. That was a year ago. A lack of diversity in the entertainment industry is a complex issue without a simple solution. We are well-aware the problem neither begins nor ends with awards nominations. But the overwhelmingly white, male, and older membership of the Academy dismally fails to reflect the vibrant

Notice is hereby given that I shall on February 16, 2016, and the succeeding days, beginning at 10:00 o’ clock in the morning in the Legislative Chamber, First Floor, Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, Nassau County, New York, sell at public auction the tax liens on real estate hereinafter described, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party-in-interest in such real estate shall pay to the County Treasurer by February 11, 2016 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges, against the property. TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The gallery presents exhibitions and public events that aim to foster academic collaborations at Hunter College while addressing subjects relevant to the East Harlem community and New York City.
