In an effort to grow the fashion community of San Antonio, I will represent our city in my worldwide travels and continue to pitch our local designers, models and retailers for editorial coverage and worldwide exposure in top fashion publications,” says Tam.

Dora Vera Dora Vera is an established professional makeup artist and educator in San Antonio, Texas.

Her work has appeared in numerous editorial and commercial projects. Dora has traveled to California to take part in several training session with the renown artist and educator Donna Mee. “I love applying makeup so much that I have decided to take my techniques to the classroom and teach the young girls of San Antonio,” says Vera. In this issue, LIMESTONE worked with Vera on the CZAR by Cesar Galindo fashion shoot at the St. Anthony Hotel.

Frank Castro, contributing photographer for LIMESTONE As a product shooter, Frank Castro’s subjects have ranged from electronic parts, to elements in nature, to food. Spending much of his childhood in Europe including his family’s working farm in France, he has a keen appreciation for nature and enjoys capturing the beauty and simplicity in photographing food. A resident of the Hill Country for more than 17 years and an avid outdoorsman, Castro is always aware of his surroundings with camera in hand. In this issue, his images include the large leaf in the Bending Branch Winery story shot in Don Durden’s vineyard near Sisterdale among other food shots.

Leah Thomason Leah Thomason is a creative portrait and fashion photographer based in Kerrville, Texas.

Her photography is inspired by what inspires her: authentic beauty, dramatic colors, and adventure. Says Thamason, “I believe everyone should have the opportunity to feel beautiful in a photograph.” She strives to create images that are both timeless and artistic.

In this issue, Thomason shot the portrait of Keri Kropp and other images in the story.

William Kierce Born and raised in Kerrville, Texas, William Kierce is a full-time professional rodeo photographer that has been around the sport his whole life. Home base is Fredericksburg from where he is traveling to local and national rodeos constantly as an in-demand rodeo shooter for more than six years. “The sport of rodeo is fast and fierce,” says Kierce, “and catching the athletes just at the right moment is key.” For this issue of LIMESTONE, Kierce shot the cover image at the Texas Rodeo Company’s Western Sky Venue of Trey Martin and Kierce’s high school buddy Yancey James.

EDITOR’S LETTER After more than 20-years in New York and Los Angeles working in media & entertainment, I made good on my commitment to myself and moved back home to celebrate my 50th birthday in my beloved Hill Country in 2011.

In my opinion, there just is no better place on the planet. That opinion is increasingly shared by droves of people who are either first-time short stay visitors; “winter Texans” who are part-time residents; and, people who have discovered the Hill Country and made it their permanent home. The bottom line is that the corridor encompassing a 17-county area stretching from Austin to San Antonio and west to Uvalde and Rocksprings is one of the fastest growing areas in population and overall growth in the nation. Mandy Barton jumped...and won!

In her new book, this successful entreprenuer reveals her practical blueprint for how to live a better life Medina, Texas native Mandy Barton has added the title of author to her long list of accomplishments. Known as a fierce entrepreneur who founded the eponymous freight logistics company Barton Logistics in 1997 at the kitchen table—one of five companies she owns and operates—Barton is now sharing her process for success in Step One: Jump! Cut the Crap Already and Start Creating the Life You Really Want (Toprald Company LLC).

Since founding Barton Logistics, this mother of two has acquired real estate holdings; created a consulting firm for coaching and mentoring; and, owns Moonridge Ranch where she raises Kudu and Gemsbok exotics. She sits on the board of the Exotic Wildlife Foundation that promotes conservation through commerce.

Barton wrote this book to be a companion-like reference guide and as she explains it, “it is not a put-away book.” She has a recurring message about people getting “stuck” in their lives and offers some focused advice and practices to employ to bring excitement back to one’s life. “I want to appeal to a large community of people who are calling the audible when they find themselves not excited about life,” continues Barton, “this book is the blueprint for people to find their chapter and get unstuck.”

As a first-time author, Barton’s tone and approach as a motivational book is very different than a lot of books out there.

“This book truly came from my heart and experience,” says the successful entrepreneur, “my number one objective in writing

the book was to be approachable. I wanted to have an impact and for people to use the book to change lives in whatever area or whatever way they want to, and, to do that it has to be absolutely approachable.”

Step One: Jump! reads like Barton is sharing her personal and business stories in each chapter, and says, “Well, it very much is. I’m talking about people self-sabotaging and are at a certain place in their life and they can’t seem to push past it.”

Barton says that most people are “blocked” in their lives due to fear and laziness and that it is important to always have something to be striving for. She says, “Often times we get stuck because we achieved something and then we make the mistake of not creating the next big thing for us.”

There are nuggets of practical wisdom throughout the book including how to make one’s dream become the “right now” moment. “The joy is in Available on amazon.com the journey because once you get there, it’s familiar by that time and it’s time to create the next one,” advises Barton.

Taking the fear out of Barton’s powerful message—and book title—to just “jump” is that she believes, “you will build your wings on the way down. If you wait for your wings to be flight tested and strapped on and all the things that have to happen and all the lights to be green, well, there’s torture in standing on the edge of the cliff waiting for all of that. Action building is what absorbs the anxiety and torture anyway,” continues Barton, “and when you’re in action building mode, the fear leaves you because there’s no room for it.”

Barton does not view failure as the opposite of success, rather, as mediocrity.

“I view failure as part of success. I call it learning instead of failure,” continues Barton, “when you’re in action, and you have your head down and you’re working hard, there’s no room for any of that silliness!” Barton’s message is resonating with people everywhere and she is offering digital courses and has a second book in development. -CA November/December 2016

Mounting Success Fine artist Deb Wight’s metal interpretation is the new elegant option for hunter’s European mounts Boerne-based artist Deb Wight’s work has ranged from mosaics to painting to photography inspired by nature and earthly elements. For the last few years, she has focused on mixed-medium stained glass and metal pieces that range from abstract and linear shapes to floral and birds using a technique she developed. More recently, she has broken through to a whole new audience and she credits her husband Albert for inspiring her to apply her skills in metal-work to a new medium—wildlife skulls.

“I’m not a hunter but my husband is and he never really understood my art,” says Deb, “and one day he gave me a skull and said ‘why don’t you do something with this and we can have it as a European mount,’ and so I applied copper to it and then refined my process and he just loved it!”

Wight says her husband’s urging to expand her artistic career of over 20 years to include the skull mounts and his appreciation of her work has been exciting and a new journey for her. “His participation and excitement about this new technique and the public’s excitement has been very validating,” says Wight.

She exhibits in various galleries and shows throughout the U.S. and is very 8

busy with commission work. “It’s a very different way to honor the animal and it feels as though the animal, after death, has become an object of beauty and art,” continues Wight, “it adds an elegance to a mount that women love but it is still very masculine.”

Deb Wight Studios has had much success in exhibiting at shows like the Texas Trophy Hunter’s annual Hunter’s Extravaganza and the Boerne Wild Game Dinner.

“I cannot tell you how many women have come to my exhibits with their husbands and said to him, ‘now, I would love to put this skull in the house,’” says the artist.

With 2016 coming to a close, co-owners of Tejas Rodeo Compa-

ny Trey Martin and Yancey James are looking back on decades of friendship; the 10th anniversary of their company; and, looking forward to celebrating their newest venue and more to come. The partners who grew up “rodeo-ing” together in small Texas towns have grown Tejas Rodeo Company in Bulverde into a major authentic Western-heritage themed entertainment destination that includes a first-class rodeo arena with a professional rodeo competition every Saturday night; stables; various food and bar venues including an award-winning steakhouse; a performance stage with a massive dance floor; a store; a casita and bunk houses; and their newest venue for weddings and events of all kind on the acreage: Western Sky. None of what would become Tejas Rodeo Company was

master-planned. Instead, Martin and James just listened to what the market wanted and with a lot of dedication put one boot in front of the other and just made it happen by doing what they know how to do. The duo’s passion to do their part in continuing and sharing the cowboy way of life and live an authentic Western lifestyle–personally and professionally–was the only plan they needed. Their success in part has been the organic slow, controlled growth and as James says, “it’s 10 years and we’re not going anywhere.”

Located in Bulverde in the Hill Country near San Antonio, Tejas Rodeo Company is fondly known by locals as just “Tejas” and it may be the biggest hidden gem in the state of Texas. Tejas is one of those destinations that when driving to, even with GPS engaged, the route treks some beautiful back-roads and for a moment you think you

THE BEGINNING Tejas Rodeo Company’s backbone is still its Saturday night rodeo. Both men have participated in every aspect of the sport of rodeo but fondly speak about team roping and the importance that it has in building relationships and character for the overall sport.

After many years on the rodeo circuit, Martin chose to continue his education and put himself through law school in San Antonio where he currently practices and James continued a major professional rodeo career including membership in the PBR (Professional Bull Riders Association) and competed in hundreds of rodeos throughout his career.

“There is a certain authenticity to all we do because we’ve lived it,” says Martin, “and Yancey, he’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport of rodeo. That’s what makes him a good announcer. That’s because it’s all coming from within.”

It was the love of the land, animals and the sport of rodeo that brought the two together to build Tejas Rodeo Company, and they built it with family involved every step of the way.

FAMILY Tejas is family-run and family-friendly and there is practically no job any family member has not or cannot perform.

“If we go back to the very beginning, me and my family started the stabling business in 1999 because we knew San Antonio was moving north and we thought it would be a little niche where people would want to enjoy horses but didn’t know how-to nor have the time and resources to care for them so we started boarding horses.

Yancey came in 2002 and that led in to us partnering on a team pinning-type production, because we knew there was a lot of people that could ride who could participate in team pinning and ranch sorting. You don’t even need to know how to handle a rope, but you can participate in that kind of Western event. That became very popular,” says Martin.

The stabling, riding and small rodeo-type events began as a small family business on Friday nights that is now a large-scale and growing extended family business. In 2005, Trey brought Yancey on fulltime and he took over the stable operation. Next came a beer license and concessions (that began with Martin’s daughters cooking dogs and burgers on a George Foreman Grill); then, investments to cover the arena, building a smoke house, pavilion, dance floor, steakhouse, and store. “Each year we’ve just grown a little bit more,” says Martin.

According to James, the two men and most of their family are involved every Saturday night and are “hands on” in every aspect of the big rodeo night that regularly attracts more than a thousand recurring locals; tourists; and, rodeo competitors with their families.

“We’ve raised a number of families at Tejas. We’ve seen lot’s of kids grow up,” James states proudly, “there’s not many places left today where you can turn your kid’s loose.”

Steak is important in Texas and especially important to Trey Martin.

After a lot of research--tasting his way through west Texas--the “KC” became the star of the menu at the Tejas Steakhouse & Saloon.

According to Martin, “You know the whole story with the Kansas City steak is the cut of meat. That’s not what we’re talking about here. The Kansas City steak is a cut of meat that is the same thing as the New York Strip, but the New Yorkers didn’t want to eat something that was called Kansas City, but because Kansas City had all the packing houses and it’s where the cattle came from, that’s how it initially got its name.

I spent some time in Alpine, San Angelo, and various little towns in west Texas and when you order steak at a restaurant, and on ranches when you’re eating with the boss or the family, that’s how they prepare their steaks. What we talk about when we say Kansas City is more of a style or method of preparation as opposed to a cut of meat.”

Keeping with the tradition of cowboys eating steak while on a cattle drive or trail ride was key in why the KC became the centerpiece of the Tejas Steakhouse & Saloon. Martin has taken the traditional west Texas KC up a notch, “This type of steak preparation came from west Texas and we brought it over here and just tried to make it a lot better.

We try to make ours different. We have refined the seasoning. We’re using a piece of beef that will grade prime or better and cut it so every bite has a searing flavor to it and has the seasoning on it. We developed our own seasoning and it makes for a really flavorful steak that practically melts in your mouth. We also offer the KC style with Akaushi beef that we source from the Beeman Ranch who are top notch,” says Martin, “about 70 percent of all the steaks we sell are KC.” Left: Beeman Ranch Akaushi beef prepared KC style.

THE ART OF STEAK

Not unlike the traditions in south Texas at the landmark dance halls like Gruene Hall, the Farmer’s Daughter, or John T. Floore’s Country Store Sunday dances, “kids can’t go to a club where you have to be 21 to learn how to dance and keep those traditions alive,” says Martin, “so, we built an open-air pavilion and nice stage and proudly book some great local country bands as well as big acts.” Big acts indeed. You may not know that George Strait filmed his Troubadour music video at Tejas and many celebrities have attended and hosted events at Tejas.

A favorite location for film and television shooting, Bravo TV’s hit series “Top Chef” (Texas) was filmed there as well.

“There is no better place to take my family, then go compete in the rodeo and have a good steak and a good time,” says Tyler Magnus, host of “Roping and Riding with Tyler Magnus” on RFD-TV, “it’s just hard to find a place like this anymore.” Known as one of the world’s best horsemen, Magnus has incredible respect for how Trey Martin and Yancey James have built a family-oriented environment where the kids can run around, the adults can dine and dance and everyone can watch the rodeo. “There is just something for everyone out there,” says Magnus, “I have been in this business my whole life and I see the work they put in to everything. Trey and Yancey have such passion for what they do.”

Martin’s daughters have all worked at Tejas, “I have three daughters that are college graduates and are in their mid-twenties now. They all grew up working at Tejas and now Madison, who is eight, is here and a barrel racer,” beams Martin.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT Following their growth pattern of listening to the customer, in October 2016, Tejas Rodeo Company opened Western Sky due to the demand for weddings, celebrations, corporate events, concerts and convention rodeos.

“We were already producing all of these extra events, but people usually want to book their special event on a Saturday and we need to keep the other venues, steak house and regular Saturday night rodeo competition open to the public,” says James, “so, another venue was necessary.”

The partners drew their design inspiration from existing buildings on the property that are over 100 years old and in keeping with traditional Western style and Hill Country materials. The drive (or shuttle) from the rodeo arena pass by the stables and is lined with an array of cactus that was curated from West Texas and leads to a grand entrance in to the 7500 square foot building. There is a large stage, hall for dining, seating and dancing; a huge bar topped with a historic chuck wagon; full catering facilities and plenty of outdoor settings and parking. For a wedding setting, there are bride’s and groom’s quarters that are upscale, yet, fun. Behind the hall, there is a path and bridge over a stream leading to a gazebo chapel.

“The idea was for the Western Sky venue to be close enough to combine it with the rodeo for corporate convention work but far enough to be separate if a wedding was to happen at the same time. I think we’ve accomplished that,” says Martin.

In addition to the recurring professional competition rodeos in the arena, James is producing the convention rodeos as well. “We

This Kerrville-based Style Visionary Personifies her Lifestyle Brand I first met Keri Kropp when she was a handbag designer in New York City in the mid-nineties. I was a south Texas native working in Manhattan as a fashion editor, and it was memorable to me that a terrific designer was having her handbags made in Yoakum, Texas. She was specific and authentic about her design ideas then; and, those core creative traits remain the same today.

I could not have predicted then that Keri and I would meet again in 2013 in Kerrville, Texas in the heart of the Hill Country at her store Schreiner Goods that she opened in 2011 in the historic Schreiner Mercantile building (circa 1856) near the Guadalupe River, but we did. And now, Kropp continues to execute on her plan of building a lifestyle brand encompassing her creative vision; demand for quality and excellence; and, keeping one foot in Kerrville with her husband and two sons, and the other foot in New York City.

industrial chic feel. Keri Kropp Space is a showroom and design services work space. The space reflects a raw elegance with a nod to the Texas Hill Country that evokes an upscale, yet easy, Hill Country style of living that could easily translate to Colorado, California or really anywhere. Kropp’s clients are also loyal fans who rely on her to distill the latest trends with the Keri Kropp lens.

Kropp’s transition back home to Kerrville in 2002 came at the urging of her parents after the 911 tragedy. She had met her husband in NYC and they moved to Texas and she left her career as a handbag designer and interior’s stylist behind.

“I got married, had babies, remodeled the house, and worked in our insurance agency for 10 years, so I was completely out of any kind of fashion and had not worked in retail since college. I just jumped in and opened Schreiner Goods with the inspiration coming from the building itself,” says Kropp, “my initial design sense was to do more Art Deco, and then I took it from there to create an inspiring and beautiful place.”

The Hill Country community of well-traveled style mavens responded—in droves. Red turned to black quickly for Kropp and the launch in to home goods and design services have formed the hub of Kropp’s destinations along the tony Kerrville historic downtown shopping district. Kropp brings a global style sensibility and

Located not far from the Kerrville Municipal Airport, Kropp has a loyal clientele that frequently jet over to shop for the latest and ever-changing inventory and engage Kropp for design services.

“I had been in Kerrville for 19 years by the time I opened Schreiner Goods and I saw a void in the marketplace for fashion and felt I could fill that void and trusted my creative vision and business experience to make it happen ,” continues Kropp, “and having been a stylist for people’s homes I knew that SG Home would be the next step to extend my vision and offer people something not available here.”

Now, with the launch of Keri Kropp Space as a working and inspiring design studio, the scene is set to be immersed in the brand. Kropp has a keen eye for buying which is largely self-taught since she began Schreiner Goods with relatively no experience at a retailer. Her ability to go to various markets and laser focus her buying skills for her customer base in the Hill Country and combine that at retail with unusually acute customer service by her staff is surely part of the secret sauce that has enabled her rapid expansion and growth.

“For me, it really is all about quality and beauty,” says Kropp, “and sharing the story with our customers about the designers, artists, craftsmen–or whatever the circumstance may be–to explain why I wanted that item in my stores to represent my brand.” Kropp has a loyal staff who she immerses in training about all the products and services. For instance, with the fashion inventory at Schreiner Goods, the staff has tried-on the pieces; understands various body types; and, is knowledgeable about what Kropp’s motivation was in buying the merchandise for various ages, seasons and events.

Rather than a showroom, Keri Kropp Space feels more like a cool TriBeCa loft has been dropped in to downtown Kerrville from New York City. There are sample vignettes of stylized rooms and working inspiration boards that are ever-changing. Kropp herself is in a constant state of change and mindful about how her image and vision drives her retail business as well as her emerging eponymous brand. Increasingly, technology and new scientific research is playing an integral part in how the wine we drink is grown, processed and bottled. Evidence shows that the world’s ancient beverage of wine was first enjoyed by those lucky Georgians (at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe) around 8000 years ago. One can imagine the taste is very different today. Leaders in the field of enology and viticulture (the science, study and production of grapes) have made great strides recently and Texas winemaker Robert W. Young, M.D., founder of Bending Branch Winery in Comfort, Texas is one of those leaders.

Dr. “Bob” Young is a graduate of the internationally acclaimed Winemaking Certificate Program at the University of California, Davis. No stranger to research and laboratory work, Young’s path to making award-winning wines has no doubt, in part, been due to his voraciousness for scientific research

The Texas High Plains is the second largest AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Texas, comprising roughly 8-million acres in west Texas, mostly south of the Panhandle region. As the name indicates, this AVA lies within the High Plains sub-region of the Great Plains in the central United States. The climate of the Texas High Plains is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters.

to improve his product. He is known in the winemaking industry for seeking and using groundbreaking technology.

During his studies, his focus was on learning techniques to make the flavor of Texas wines better. “With the climate we have, the wines mature early due to the heat and so they don’t develop the same colors and tannins that they may have in a different climate,” says Young.

“While at UC, Davis, I came across a paper published in France, in French, that had one paragraph about how to improve the extraction of colors and tannins to enhance the flavor so I had it translated and it stated that there was a fifty percent improvement in color and tannin and it was very convincing that the cryromaceration method described in the paper could work,” says Young, “a lightbulb went off in my brain and I searched but couldn’t find anyone actually doing the process, so, we did.”

Young went to work. He did side-by-side comparisons of standard fermintation versus cryrofermintation and the results were very similar as in the French study. “Subjectively, we also found that we got more enhanced flavor coming out of the wines as well,” according to Young. In May of 2014, he made a presentation at Newsom Vineyards annual “Grape Day” conference in Plains, Texas where he shared his work and results. The result according to Young, “it works!”

Dr. Young explains the cryromaceration process this way: “after de-stemming the grapes we put them in large bins and fill them with nitrogen and store them in a commercial cold storage near Bending Branch Winery (Comfort, Texas), and it takes about three days for the grapes to freeze solid,” continues Young, “they stay frozen for a few weeks and then we make the wine.”

The Bending Branch Winery 2011 Estate Tannat won Reserve Class Champion and Double Gold and was named Top Texas Wine at the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition. Young says with a proud smile, “this wine was the first one that we produced using the tested cryromaceration method and that was in 2009.”

Established in 2009, The Bending Branch Winery estate is on 56-acres near Comfort, Texas where the Texas Wine Trail begins and continues through Fredericksburg and beyond towards Austin. Branch on High is the Estate’s sister tasting room and cafe in the Comfort, Texas Historic District on its famed High Street. The Texas Hill Country wine region has been compared to Sonoma and Napa in the last few years and even non-Texas-based publications—like Wine Enthusiast and USA Today—among others recommend the region as a top wine destination. The Bending Branch Winery has 14-acres of grapevines with more than a dozen varieties in addition to the 10 other vineyards in

Texas where they harvest Young’s bold choices of varieties including Tannat, Sagrantino, Souzão, Charbono, and Picpoul Blanc.

Young’s grape choice and what he calls a necessity of “using a mixture of winemaking tools” has yielded multiple award-winning results from prestigious wine competitions. As the world-leader in cryromaceration, the Bending Branch lab is in continual daily use and continues its experimentation in all aspects of winemaking from growing systems to the production process.

On a continuing quest to increase the extraction of color and tannins while improving flavor, another breakthrough technique is being used at Bending Branch Winery: flash détente, simply known as “flash.” Used mostly in Europe (where there are approximately 60 machines in use), and in the U.S. where there are only a handful of units and only two in Texas. In September 2014, Bending Branch Winery installed the Italian-made Della Toffola.

This massive, impressive, piece of machinery that heats the skins of the grapes and then passes them through a vacuum chamber to open them thus creating a pasteurization-type process that results in approximately thirty percent increase in extraction is yielding impressive results.

Bending Branch has succeeded in shining a light on the Texas Hill Country’s ability to produce, collaborate, and innovate in the art of winemaking with Dr. Bob Young’s curiosity and constant drive to improve the process. Science and technology is hidden in the gorgeous landscape and vistas of Kendall County, Texas.
