NYSNA’s Position

NYSNA supports the Medicare for All Act of 2019, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and 14 of his colleagues. In the U.S. House of Representatives, it is sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI).

NYSNA supports workers’ rights, strong wages, collective bargaining, the right to organize, and supports the elimination of laws banning union security. NYSNA is in favor of the Support the Protecting the Right to Organize Act (“PRO Act”) to strengthen protections for employees engaged in collective action, to facilitate collective bargaining, and to provide for stronger remedies for employees under the NLRA.

NYSNA supports the Raise the Wage Act, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour by 2024.

Does not support Medicare for All; would improve and build upon Obamacare.

Supported NAFTA and the TPP.

Endorsed a $15 an hour minimum wage, saying it’s “well past time.”

Along with 14 other Democrats, Sanders introduced the Medicare for All Act of 2019, which extends Medicare to every resident and largely eliminates private health insurance.
