2025 OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS
Elijah Barton
The Corporate Source | Garden City/Nassau County
Elijah Barton has been a valued member of The Corporate Source (TCS) custodial team at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip since March 2024. He provides vital custodial services at the courthouse, working a NYSID contract with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works. When Elijah first joined the team, he was nervous about his ability to succeed.
During Elijah’s initial TCS interview, it was determined that he would benefit from an ACCES-VRsponsored Work Tryout to assess him for a custodial career. From the beginning, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and the courage to ask for help when needed, qualities that set him apart.
Although Elijah modestly described himself as “a mess” when he started, his team saw his potential. With encouragement from Ana, his manager; Katie and Zhane, his vocational rehabilitation specialists; and his close-knit family – including his mom, dad, and grandmother – Elijah began to build confidence and thrive in his new role. He gradually increased his hours as his stamina and self-assurance grew. Elijah proudly now works full-time at 40 hours a week.
Elijah’s responsibilities include cleaning judges’ chambers, a task that once felt intimidating but is now one he handles with professionalism and pride. He previously held jobs at a deli and a coffee shop, but those positions lacked the structure and support he finds at TCS. The positive, structured environment has enabled Elijah to flourish, highlighting his resilience and capacity for growth.
The impact of employment on Elijah’s life has been transformative. He shares that before working at the courthouse, he would “wake up and just exist.” Now, he starts each day with purpose. He describes himself as more relaxed, responsible, and mentally healthy. Employment has also brought tangible benefits: after initially biking to work, Elijah received an electric bicycle from his father. Then, through careful saving, he purchased his own car. With reliable transportation, Elijah no longer feels isolated and is able to visit family and friends regularly.
Elijah lives independently, and is exploring the possibility of relocating closer to his family. Pursuing personal enrichment, he is enrolled in community art classes, and is considering a future in the skilled trades, such as plumbing. His journey demonstrates a remarkable blend of personal growth, increased independence, and an expanding vision for the future.
Elijah Barton exemplifies the spirit of NYSID’s recognition program. His journey reflects the profound impact that meaningful employment and supportive environments can have. TCS is proud to have Elijah on the team and excited to see what he will accomplish next.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...proud. I was not sure I was going to be successful, so getting nominated is a real accomplishment.
Laura Berg
Image Integrator, LLC | Syracuse/Onondaga County
Laura joined Image Integrator’s team in the summer of 2023 after returning to the US from Australia. In 2014, Laura single-handedly braved the immigration process to move from Cleveland, Ohio to Brisbane, Australia to marry her Aussie native husband, Adrian. She later obtained American/Australian citizenship. The husband and wife duo ran their own cleaning business, cleaning homes, businesses, and churches. In 2023, they began the immigration process all over again in order to live near Laura’s family. All of this is especially impressive given that they are both on the autism spectrum, but they did not let that hold them back.
Moving to Syracuse, Laura was offered a position as a document indexer at Image Integrator, where her sister, Kari, is the office manager. Knowing of her typing skills and attention to detail, Kari was sure Laura would be a good fit and highly valued asset for Image Integrator’s growing indexing team. Laura and Adrian were both hired as document indexers, making it convenient for them to get to work.
Laura is determined to produce high-quality work. She has grown proficient in multiple databases and programs used for indexing, most commonly FileBound and Adobe Pro, becoming the most versatile document indexer to date. Time and time again, Laura has shown that she can handle any project given to her. While she enjoys the comfort of working independently, the intimate office setting at Image Integrator, away from the customer-based interactions and competitive nature of retail positions she previously held, has allowed her to build friendships with her colleagues that extend outside of the office.
In her personal time, Laura enjoys spending time with her family, whether it’s Sunday night family dinners and board games or helping her sister with her jewelry business at local craft fairs. She also substitutes for her sister as a caregiver for their ailing mother. She has a passion for writing, drawing, and experimenting with healthy cooking. Laura is currently saving money and building credit in hopes of soon purchasing an accessible multi-family home to share with her family, most importantly for their mother who suffered a stroke more than a year ago, which took away her ability to walk.
Laura brings with her a bright smile, a commitment to excellence, and reliability and dependability unmatched by anyone else in her department. She is strong, independent, and determined, and Image Integrator is proud to have her on the team.
My paycheck helps me to… ...pay my bills and plan for the future.
Daniel Blasdell
Suburban Adult Services, Inc. | Elma/Erie County
Daniel (Dan) has overcome great challenges to be where he is today. This included alcohol dependency, communication barriers, and housing and transportation issues. Through it all, he was determined, focused, and positive. As of today, Dan has been sober for more than 24 years. He also transitioned from supported living to his own apartment. Dan navigates public transportation and advocates for himself as needed. These achievements alone make him an outstanding individual whose perseverance and dedication carry over into his job performance. When Dan learned that he was being nominated for the 2025 Outstanding Performance Award, he remarked, “I feel proud and needed. It’s nice to be recognized.”
Dan started his employment journey in a sheltered workshop operated by Suburban Adult Services, Inc. (SASI), working on various production tasks. He excelled at every job he was given and was quickly promoted to a production assistant. As time went by, Dan’s hard work and kindred spirit was sought after by SASI management. He accepted various positions that included grounds maintenance, snow removal, and other production-related jobs. Dan also had an inspiring opportunity to help as a barn assistant with High Hurdles Therapeutic Horseback Riding program. During this experience, he discovered a passion for caring for and working with animals.
Dan has been part of the Suburban Adult General Enterprises (SAGE) division of SASI since 2021. He truly enjoys his career which offers fulfillment, independence, and financial freedom. He appreciates the significant support from SASI’s job coaches and SAGE management throughout the transition from working in a workshop to working independently in his community.
Because of his outstanding job performance, Dan was asked to pick up additional hours on a private commercial contract cleaning. Due to the nature of his work sites, Dan’s responsibility for keeping his sites clean, neat, and tidy is a constant challenge which he carries out with meticulous care. Co-workers, supervisors, and customers will tell you that he is a pleasure to work with. Dan has a great sense of humor and always puts an effort into doing a good job. He takes great pride in his work, and is a wonderful example of how employment can foster a place of growth and independence.
Dan’s employment opportunities have boosted his sense of independence and financial freedom. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys classic rock music, action films, getting tattoos, and traveling. “Without my paycheck, my social life would be limited and boring,” he said. SAGE acknowledges Dan’s workmanship and personal attributes. His road map has set him on a successful path that is both commendable and inspiring.
I like my job because…
...I like the atmosphere where I work. I like to stay active and this job helps me with that.
Shawn Brown
Rochester Rehabilitation Center, Inc. | Rochester/Monroe County
Shawn Brown came to Rochester Rehabilitation Center (RRC) as a custodian who wanted to learn and grow. Throughout his five-year tenure, he has shown dedication to the various NYSID sites that he has helped maintain, working alongside a job coach and care manager.
Shawn is conscientious about being on time and always wants the customer to be happy. When his previous job site concluded, he moved to RRC’s home site where he received additional training and daily access to supervisors and a vocational employment specialist. When Shawn returned to this site, he began to interact more with other staff, get involved in office events such as monthly “fun” day events and holiday events, and come out of his shell. His personal growth was obvious, as he smiled while completing his work.
Based on these improvements, Shawn was approached to go back out to sites in the community. Hesitant at first, he eventually announced that he was ready to go back out to other sites. He is currently working on three NYSID janitorial contracts, including one where he is the sole custodian on duty, a responsibility which speaks for itself.
Shawn uses his paycheck to pay bills, purchase food, and maintain his car, stating, “It feels good to be able to afford to do these things and know that I worked hard for it.” His personal growth and happiness have been a pleasure to support.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...very appreciated. Knowing that I recently moved to a new site and that things are going well makes me very happy.
Byron Burke
Lifetime Assistance | Rochester/Monroe County
Byron Burke is the definition of dedication, perseverance, and growth. As a document destruction technician at Classified Scanning and Shredding, a division of Lifetime Assistance, Byron has contributed to the success of the NYSID contract for more than 16 years. For the last seven of those years, he has done so as a competitively employed team member, a milestone that reflects not only his hard work, but also his unwavering determination to succeed.
Byron’s intellectual disability has never defined his potential. In fact, it is his remarkable work ethic and positive attitude that have allowed him to transition from a prevocational program into fully integrated employment, an accomplishment that speaks volumes about his capabilities. Each day, Byron brings energy, reliability, and a strong team spirit to the workplace, where he is known for being dependable, enthusiastic, and incredibly proud of the work he does.
Whether handling document shredding responsibilities in the facility or out on the road assisting drivers with pickups, Byron takes great pride in being early to work and performing every task. He thrives on being part of a team and especially enjoys the friendly, supportive atmosphere at work. His infectious smile and uplifting attitude make him a joy for co-workers and clients to be around.
Byron’s job does more than provide a paycheck. It has opened the door to greater independence in his everyday life. His earnings allow him to travel, and one of his favorite things is being able to visit his auntie and uncle in Georgia. Knowing that his hard work leads to these meaningful experiences only strengthens his motivation.
When asked what it means to be nominated for this award, Byron humbly responded, “It shows I am a hard worker.” That humility, paired with his drive and dedication, is exactly why he deserves recognition. He also dreams big. Byron hopes to one day work for the Buffalo Bills as a greeter that would combine three of his favorite things: being around people, sharing joy with others, and the Buffalo Bills.
Byron’s journey is living proof of Nelson Mandela’s statement that “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Through resilience, consistency, and pride in his work, he has built a career, and a life filled with purpose. For all he has accomplished, for the growth he has shown, and for the positivity he brings to everyone around him, Byron is truly deserving.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I wouldn’t be doing anything but staying at home.
Colleen Burke
Maryhaven Center of Hope | Port Jefferson Station/Suffolk County
Colleen began her journey at Maryhaven’s Integrated Business Center in the document imaging department four years ago, where she served as a document prepper for a variety of NYSID jobs, including handling sensitive court documents for multiple New York counties.
Colleen has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a deep commitment to quality. Her dedication ensures that every task she undertakes meets the highest standards, reflecting the professionalism and integrity that define the team. Colleen’s reliability and focus make her an invaluable asset to the Integrated Business Center. These qualities made her an ideal candidate for the newly created position of NYSID per diem production worker, a role she accepted with enthusiasm and has excelled at ever since.
In her own words, Colleen said, “I like my job because I get to work with inspiring people.” She often exceeds expectations by encouraging her colleagues and stepping up to assist the supervisor whenever needed. Her willingness to support others and her uplifting demeanor have made her a well-respected and well-liked member of the team.
Colleen’s contributions go a long way in enhancing Maryhaven’s workplace culture and productivity.
My dream job would be… ...working as a mentor for others trying to overcome their personal challenges.
Harold Burroughs
Mountain Lake Services | Mineville/Essex County
When Harold Burroughs learned he was being honored as an Outstanding Performer in NYSID’s 50th year, the words humbled, thrilled, and thankful merged into a wonderfully poetic epiphany. Humbled, meaning he did not see this accolade coming. Thrilled, meaning he has been joyous since the moment he found out. And thankful – well, that’s just who Harold is.
Harold is a quiet man who grew up in the remote areas of the Adirondacks. For nearly 60 years, he has lived by a personal code of hoping for the best, but never being discouraged when things don’t go as planned. Life is a challenge in the Adirondack Park. Wins are not gifts; they are hard fought and at times, existential. In many ways, this outlook on life has helped Harold build his character of hard work, patience, and quiet optimism.
Harold experiences an extraordinary amount of goodwill among peers and management at the Essex Industries manufacturing facility. Senior Foreman, Brendon Teneyck, notes, “I can say that with Harold, we’re talking 100% productivity, 100% quality!” Shop Supervisor, Doug Bishop, endorsed Harold’s nomination, writing that it was well earned, “due to his hard work and willingness to learn each step of the job he is given.” Those steps include stickering the wood when it arrives in order for it to dry; sending the planks through the moulder to smooth the surface; cutting boards into top planks and seats; drilling the boards to different measurements; cutting boards for ends, centers, and seat bars; drilling and chamfering boards; building the tops of the tables and adding the legs; checking for quality at every step. Harold loves seeing things being put together, and aspires to become a supervisor.
Harold’s life outside the work zone has also shown wonderful progress. His first two living arrangements with the agency were in four-person residences. Harold now lives in an agency-sponsored apartment in Port Henry with his yellow lab named Bella and with only basic supervision, and is loving this independence. His good friend, Charlie, lives in the apartment below him and they frequently hang out. Harold is also interested in applying once again for a driver’s license.
Harold attended BOCES in Mineville as a youth where he focused on the building trades. He still remembers the coffee table and the cabinet he built as projects there. After graduating, he worked at Essex Industries for the next four years, 1986-1990, and returned to wood shop nearly seven years ago. Harold’s return sums up the work and the magic of the little industry that could, and represent this unique mission in woodcraft in the heart of the Adirondacks.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...proud! I’m the happiest person in the world.
David Butler
Northeast Career Planning at Unity House | Troy/Rensselaer County
David Butler is a kind, caring, well-spoken, dedicated, and hard-working individual who has been employed in partnership with Northeast Career Planning (NCP) for over 10 years. David previously worked at Price Chopper for several years, proving to be a reliable, thorough individual with goals toward better things. In 2021, he decided to make a change geared toward those goals by applying for part-time janitorial employment on a Preferred Source contract for the New York State Education Department.
David easily settled in with his supervisors and co-workers in his new position at the Cultural Education Center (the NYS Museum), quickly proving to be a strong addition to their team. He excelled in the laidback environment of his new workplace, working independently in a quiet environment or as part of a team as needed, with his headphones on, making the evening shifts fly by.
Fast forward to 2025, David had his eye on staying in the janitorial field, but taking things up a notch. He started looking for a long-term career position that would allow for further growth. Backed by years of experience working at the museum, David applied for permanent, full-time janitorial employment for New York State. He was selected for an interview and once again knocked the ball out of the park. David met this career goal when offered the position, an accomplishment of which he and his NCP support team were immensely proud. David was on track to be promoted by NCP into the Cleaner II supervisory role at the Cultural Education Center, but this move to permanent status was met with happiness all around.
According to his NCP supervisor, David had consistently shown resilience and determination in the face of significant challenges. Whether navigating shifting priorities or managing unexpected obstacles, he has remained focused, adaptable, and deeply committed to the team’s success.
Through dedication, reliability, and willingness to go above and beyond, David has exceeded expectations. His growth has been evident not just in results but in leadership, taking on new responsibilities without hesitation and supporting colleagues along the way. When David applied for the full-time position within the New York State Education Department, he distinguished himself from other candidates by his perseverance, strong work ethic, and readiness to take the next step forward.
I like my job because… ...this is the biggest step towards independence that I have taken, and it has proven to me that I can become independent.
Tren Carroll
Arc Herkimer | Herkimer/Herkimer County
Through Arc Herkimer’s continuum of employment opportunities, an individual can join the production enterprise with little work experience and receive many supports to learn the skills needed to perform actual work. If the candidate displays a work ethic and a productivity level necessary for a minimum wage position, the opportunity is there.
Tren Carroll is an individual who succeeded in this path when she joined Arc Herkimer with no previous work experience. She was extremely shy and very, very quiet, but happy to take the beginning steps of her career. Tren quickly displayed a work ethic second to none, a hunger to learn new jobs, and the drive to stay busy and complete high-quality work.
Tren’s productivity level steadily improved, and earned her the opportunity to move into a minimum wage position. Her desire for work and to learn new jobs went to a new, never-beforeseen level. Her output and quality level remained exceedingly high.
In Tren’s career so far, she has worked on State Police and Park Police garments, delineators, three different medical bags, four different hard hats, three different protective gowns, including the new Level IV isolation gown, and a full selection of protective eyewear and hearing protection. Each of these was introduced gradually, and Tren completed the necessary work steps perfectly.
Tren continues to develop personally at work as well. The once shy woman has blossomed into a smiling, confident individual with many friends and, more importantly, the full respect of her supervisors. The sky is the limit for Tren as she works hard to realize her dream of working in the food industry.
I like my job because… ...I like working and staying busy.

If I didn’t have this job…
...I would be struggling financially. I would probably be homeless and I certainly wouldn’t have a car, health insurance, and the ability to continue to better myself.
Stephanie Davis
The Resource Center | Jamestown/Chautauqua County
Stephanie Davis joined The Resource Center about a year ago, initially working in snow removal at the I-86 Chautauqua Lake rest area and welcome center. Even after completing her assigned duties, she could always be counted on to lend a hand wherever extra help was needed. When the snow removal season ended, Stephanie proactively reached out to her supervisor to secure another role within the organization, demonstrating both initiative and dedication. She has since transitioned into her current position, which she truly enjoys as it keeps her engaged, focused, and at ease.
Before joining the Chautauqua County Chapter of NYSARC, Stephanie served as a customer service manager at a local shop and also as an emergency dispatcher. In these roles, she developed strong customer service skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a deep sense of patience and professionalism. These experiences helped shape her into the capable and composed team member she is today. Stephanie’s character, humility, and drive make her an outstanding employee and a truly admirable individual. Stephanie has shown measurable improvements in her productivity and expanded her scope of work; growth that has been recognized by peers and supervisors, marking her as a rising leader. She has recently taken on the lead position in a mobile custodial crew, ensuring the team stays on task and service is top notch. Since working on these accounts, customer satisfaction has increased tremendously.
A high-performing employee with self-motivation and a strong work ethic, she approaches each day with reliability, positivity, and a genuine commitment to doing her best work. Stephanie is eager to take on new challenges, seek out learning opportunities and adopt new skills that benefit both her role and the team.
Stephanie takes initiative, stepping in to support teammates and guiding others through complex tasks. She fosters trust across the team, maintains excellent relationships with colleagues and supervisors, and goes above and beyond to ensure a positive experience for customers.
Stephanie is a quiet and thoughtful presence on the team, but isn’t afraid to voice concerns when it matters. She communicates with honesty and respect, contributing valuable insights and advocating for both her needs and the needs of others.
Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys caring for her home and pampering her pets. She’s an avid reader with a passion for storytelling, and dreams of becoming a writer one day. She is thankful for her job, which allows her to support herself and continue to contribute to her community.
My paycheck helps me to… ...provide a home for myself and splurge on my pets.
Matthew Dawson
SecureScan | Albany/Albany County
Matt Dawson is an individual who wears many hats. Before he was cooking up digital images at SecureScan, he cooked up dishes wearing a white hat in culinary school. Back in high school, Matt wanted to learn to cook to help his culinarily-challenged parents. He would not have predicted that he would be working with computers every day. Matt is integral to every step in the process at SecureScan, delivering some of the most technical aspects of the company on every project.
A loyal 13-year employee who was referred by ACCES-VR, Matt has learned the recipe for success at SecureScan. From sorting mail, to prepping materials, to digital scanning, to completing quality checks, to scanning maps and plans, and documents from the 19th century, Matt has mastered it all. With methodical attention to detail, his latest challenge is quality checking the final draft of all SecureScan imaging projects before they are delivered to NYSID customers. Matt leads with a listening ear and supports his co-workers whenever needed.
In addition to working at various SecureScan offices, Matt is one of the first to volunteer to work at customer locations. He recently led a team at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab in New London, CT, reporting to technical and operation leadership at the base. Wherever Matt is working, he does so with professionalism and outstanding effort, earning respect from those around him.
Besides working at SecureScan, Matt also assists his dad with his sprinkler installation business, when an extra hand is needed. Matt lives with his mom, dad, brother, and nephew. Matt is most proud of contributing to his family’s expenses with his SecureScan earnings from NYSID contracts he works on. Matt serves as the family chef. Excitement grows throughout the entire household when he prepares his foolproof, food-blog-worthy bundt cakes.
Along with providing for his family, Matt has grown in other ways. SecureScan gave Matt a schedule. Before this job, he slept in and didn’t have a routine, which he now appreciates. Matt claims he has never been a people person, but through his experience in managerial roles, he has learned how to talk, instruct, and listen. Matt said that his colleagues are nice and polite, and the comfortable atmosphere at SecureScan has allowed him to grow and also learn how to multitask.
Whether he is including all of the ingredients needed to deliver images to NYSID customers or whipping up delicious treats at home, everything that Matt does is done well.
If I didn’t have this job…
...I might be in a culinary or work with my dad. I would be less confident about computer stuff and have less of a routine.
Justin Drew
AHRC New York City | Manhattan/New York County
In the heart of the Bronx lives a remarkable young man named Justin Drew. Justin has faced more than his fair share of challenges in life. Born with hydrocephalus and a history of epilepsy, visual impairment, and asthma, his intellectual functioning falls within the low to borderline range. Despite these obstacles, his story is one of unwavering determination, independence, and personal triumph.
Before turning 6, Justin underwent brain surgery, subsequently enduring five more surgeries to correct his vision as well as additional brain operations in 2003, and again less than three years ago. With every setback, Justin only grew stronger.
Justin lives with his loving mother, Gladys, and his brother, Jonathan. But it is not his living situation that defines him, it is his extraordinary commitment to his work, and his self-reliance.
Justin attended special education classes and graduated from high school with an IEP diploma in 2010. When he joined AHRC fresh out of school, he stepped into a world that would shape not just his career, but his personal growth. Justin’s first role as a trainee with Hudson River Services (HRS) was one of the most challenging. Learning how to clean properly, work effectively with a team, ask for help, and accept constructive criticism were new and difficult lessons.
Through determination and a willingness to grow, Justin transformed those early struggles into stepping stones. Over time, he was promoted to a porter position in recognition of his hard work, a role he holds with immense pride to this day. Always punctual and rarely missing a day, Justin has become known for his strong work ethic and dedication. His job is a means of income and a symbol of his independence and resilience.
Despite his disabilities, Justin travels to and from work on his own, confidently navigating public transportation. When offered assistance to apply for a reduced-fare MetroCard, he respectfully declined, proudly stating that he didn’t need the help.
Justin manages his own responsibilities at home, including paying his monthly phone bill. He advocates for himself, maintains independence in most daily activities, and prefers the quiet comfort of his home over social outings. While he enjoys trips to the park, library, and amusement centers, what he values most is the ability to live life on his own terms.
Justin’s story is not just about overcoming physical and intellectual limitations – it’s about a man who refused to be defined by them. Through determination, pride in his work, and a strong sense of self, Justin turned what many would see as limitations into the foundation of his greatest achievements.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would be missing a big part
of what makes me feel independent.
Kelli Fisher
Spectrum Designs | Port Washington/Nassau County
For much of her life, Kelli Fisher was told what she couldn’t do. Doctors doubted her future. Educators underestimated her. Employers dismissed her within minutes. Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety, and depression at 14, Kelli’s adolescence was shaped not by support, but by silence, especially as a young woman on the spectrum. Too often, autistic girls are overlooked, their challenges masked by quiet compliance, their struggles misread as shyness or disinterest.
Kelli’s pain was invisible, but profound. She endured hospitalizations for anorexia and depression, including one just before Christmas. Despite daily sensory and social challenges, she was never given special education support. Still, she found comfort in English, art, and the unwavering love of her mother, who believed her daughter was meant for more.
That belief carried Kelli to Johnson & Wales University, where she earned degrees in culinary arts and food-service entrepreneurship. She learned to drive with the help of a special needs counselor and leaned into her passions, especially music. Her love for the band, Hanson, became a bridge to connection and belonging.
But the working world remained unwelcoming. “I once had someone tell me in five minutes that he couldn’t hire me because I didn’t make eye contact,” she recalled.
Everything changed when Kelli found Spectrum Designs, a nonprofit dedicated to employing adults on the autism spectrum. She began as a part-time production assistant. Over five years, she earned three promotions and became head of social media, helping the company’s voice go viral. She proudly highlights NYSID’s partners, telling the wider story of NYSID and the power of inclusive employment. In 2024, a video she co-created reached over 25 million viewers. Sitting beside Spectrum’s CEO on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Kelli shared her story not as someone struggling, but as a leader.
In 2025, Kelli stood on one of the biggest stages in the country, NEXT for AUTISM’s Night of Too Many Stars in Manhattan where she shared the spotlight with Jon Stewart and introduced Adam Sandler. For someone once overlooked, it was a moment of visibility and joy.
Today, Kelli has co-written commercials, led a national rebrand, and helped generate millions of dollars in sales. From a girl who felt invisible to a woman helping reshape how the world sees autism, Kelli Fisher proves that when women on the spectrum are seen, supported, and believed in, they don’t just survive.
They soar.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...accomplished and proud. I’m happy to be part of a company that truly believes in neurodivergent people.

He is a self-starter, takes initiative, and is recognized for his prompt arrival and fantastic attendance.
Curtis has the ability to multitask and move from one job to the next, while ensuring all assigned duties are complete. He performs the drink mix job from start to finish and ensures that the paperwork is accurate. If a co-worker is interested in learning or working on the job, Curtis trains and mentors them on the expectations. He breaks down each step, from gathering the raw product and identifying the flavors, to stacking the finished product and storing it in the correct area.
Well-known throughout the building, when he is not working on drink mix, Curtis can be found assisting with cleaning the property and sanitizing high-touch areas. He has the personality that encourages other staff in the building to hold extensive conversations with him as he shares his interests outside of work.
Curtis continues to demonstrate his willingness to work on a daily basis, a trait he has shown since day one. He continues to be a key employee and plays a major role in the efficient operation of the jobs for which his department is responsible.
Curtis has a solid support system in his mother and his Unistel team. Outside of work, he enjoys being active and exercising, and is very much into music. He aspires to become a professional DJ or musician in the future. He also enjoys going to local area festivals.
CDS Monarch/Unistel is proud and supportive of Curtis for his amazing skills, professional growth, and overall positive demeanor on a daily basis.
My paycheck helps me to… ...pay my bills, get food, pay my rent, and have some extra money for myself.
David Gardner
The Arc Allegany-Steuben | Bath/Steuben County
The first thing you notice about David Gardner is his smile – warm, bright, and utterly infectious. It lights up every room he enters. His joy is genuine, his energy magnetic. Yet behind that vibrant spirit is a story of quiet resilience and incredible tenacity. David has lived through a remarkable 50-year transformation of how society views and supports individuals with disabilities.
David grew up in a large family where financial hardship was a daily reality, and life was difficult. After graduating with an IEP diploma from Corning West High School in 1991, he enrolled in vocational training programs at The Arc of Steuben (now Arc Allegany-Steuben). These programs provided structured employment, skill-building, job readiness, and work-for-pay. David was driven, capable, and ready to contribute from the beginning.
David became part of the Arc’s janitorial crew under a NYSID Preferred Source contract, working out in the community, interacting with customers, and earning a paycheck. He thrived in the role, becoming the crew’s unofficial ambassador due to his warm personality and genuine enthusiasm. As his confidence and experience grew, so did his work responsibilities and performance.
In 2018, David began work at Stitched INK, Arc Allegany-Steuben’s social enterprise apparel decorating business. He works in shipping and receiving, folding, and labeling completed apparel, and contributes to team morale with his ever-present smile and can-do attitude. He meets his many duties with typical consistency, enthusiasm, and cheerfulness. Business Operations Manager Rebecca Shutt said, “David is a valuable member of our team and a key piece of our workplace culture. His positive attitude and sense of humor boosts overall team morale.”
Beyond employment, David has achieved remarkable personal growth. In 2019, he fulfilled a long-time goal of moving into his own apartment. In 2021, he transitioned to Lake View Apartments in Bath, where he lives independently and is deeply engaged in his community, baking cookies for others for example. He loves to travel and is excited to swim with dolphins in Key West, FL.
David has proudly competed in the Special Olympics for over 20 years, most recently in bowling. His Lake View neighbors cheer him on and proudly display his medal-winning photos on the community bulletin board. He is also a long-time member of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, where he works to promote disability rights and choices.
NYSID Preferred Source employment gave David his first real chance at professional success, and opened doors to future independence. David is more than a hardworking employee. He is a role model and a living example of what is possible when we invest in people’s potential rather than limiting their path.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...good. This is the first time I’ve been nominated for an award like this. I can’t wait to tell everyone!
Roy Gibson
Arc of Onondaga | Syracuse/Onondaga County
Roy Gibson has worked for Arc Contract Services for two years, the entirety of which has been at the same site. The Office of People With Developmental Disabilities West Genesee Day Hab site was desperate for a worker who could be depended upon to not only do a good job, but be able to work independently and show up regularly. Arc and West Genesee Day Hab needed someone responsible, reliable, ready and willing to do a good job, and someone who could work without the need for a crew or constant supervision. They found all of that and more in Roy.
Before working for Contract Services, Roy worked in the food industry at a pizza shop as a prep cook, he worked with animals at a doggy daycare, and he worked in retail at a furniture warehouse. Roy has maintained such a good relationship with his previous employer, that he still goes back to the warehouse to help out when needed. Roy said that out of all his jobs, he really likes providing custodial services at the West Genesee Day Hab. He likes seeing the immediate results of his work, and likes knowing he is contributing to helping other people, even if it is behind the scenes, because every job matters.
Craig Dickinson, Enclaves Manager for Arc Contract Services, said of Roy, “He takes pride in his cleaning and is always looking for ways to improve what he has already done.” Roy works five evenings a week, where he is trusted with his own key to the site, and the staff know him and love him. This is evident by a statement from Keith Havis, Director of West Genesee Day Hab, who said, “Roy...is one of the most respectful people I have met in this field in my entire 38-year career. He arrives on time to clean our site and always asks everyone present, ‘Hey, how was your day?’”
Roy was born and raised in Wayland, NY and moved to Syracuse to be closer to his sister. He lived alone for eight years, and currently lives with his nephew, which he very much enjoys. He likes to save his money and enjoys the independence having a job affords him. He lives close to a park, and enjoys biking and walking in the park in his free time, particularly noting that he enjoys being outside with the trees and squirrels. He also enjoys going to concerts and loves classic rock.
I like my job because… ...I like getting a paycheck that allows me to live independently. And I like helping people.
Christopher Gorman
KBS, LLC | Babylon/Suffolk County
Christopher Gorman was hired in 2014 by American Maintenance. Christopher had been employed with the company for almost five years when KBS purchased the company. In getting to know the staff, Christopher was a standout and has since grown into an effective, well-respected leader.
Christopher became addicted to substances by the time he was 14, having grown up in a rough neighborhood without a stable family structure. For the next nine years, Christopher’s life spiraled through addiction, recovery, and relapses. He had no goals, no expectations, and no hope. The turning point was landing in jail, where Christopher decided to kick addiction once and for all. He entered Phoenix House, which has helped thousands of individuals overcome addiction in order to lead healthy, productive, and rewarding lives.
Christopher came to the job not knowing much about landscape work, but easily went from a fresh, “very green” new hire to crew leader, taking responsibility for driving a team of five employees and a truck and trailer to service 16 properties a week. He met with customers on a weekly basis to address any immediate needs they may have. Customers were quick to share that Christopher would listen and go above and beyond to address their needs.
Christopher listens and absorbs, and then delivers and even exceeds expectations. Not only did he grow into an excellent crew leader, he is also a knowledgeable mechanic. If a lawnmower or a piece of equipment breaks down, he can often repair it on the spot. During the winter months, Christopher operates snowplows, often driving to different locations when equipment breaks to perform repairs during storms. He does it all while staying calm, focused, and keeping his composure.
Christopher has grown into a mentor to colleagues. He is well-liked and respected, and has forged many friendships with co-workers, often lending support to those who might be struggling. He shares with the team the importance of responsibility, accountability, and taking pride in performance.
When a site manager gave notice to KBS management in November 2024, Christopher was chosen as the replacement, a seamless and easy transition for all. He manages five travel crews, overseeing the 63 properties serviced weekly. He schedules the services and keeps the team on budget with hours while ensuring the work is done. He meets with customers to address their needs and wants. The entire KBS organization knows Christopher to be one of the hardest working people, an individual who shows up daily to prove that.
My dream job would be… ...to do exactly what I’m doing. I love what I do.
Atiyyah Grant
Jawonio | New City/Rockland County
As a dedicated member of the Jawonio Cleaning Company, Atiyyah Grant exemplifies the core values of hard work, reliability, and professionalism every single day. His exceptional performance, commitment to his team, and glowing feedback from both supervisors and corporate partners are admirable.
Atiyyah is a shining example of taking pride in one’s work. He began his journey as a commercial cleaner for Jawonio, working at his alma mater, New York School for the Deaf. He then went on to work at his current location at the Fire Services Department, part of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services. Whether assigned to routine tasks or unexpected challenges, he meets them with a calm, thoughtful approach and unmatched diligence. His attention to detail, ability to work independently, and positive attitude have earned him the respect of his co-workers and leadership alike.

The praise does not stop at Jawonio. Mark Iannucci, Director of Fire Services at the Department, applauded Atiyyah’s professionalism and performance, describing him as “extremely dedicated, trustworthy, and kind.” Mark further shared how the fire staff look forward to seeing Atiyyah and deeply value his contribution to the work environment.
Atiyyah’s commitment is deeply personal. “Getting a paycheck every two weeks means I have money to buy the things I need and want. I don’t have to depend on others to provide for me,” he said. “For example, I bought my own car, and I maintain it. It helps me to be independent.” Atiyyah exemplifies how meaningful work can be the center of a person’s life from which other things can grow and flourish.
Atiyyah fosters community and connection at his work site. He shared that, “There’s a person there that started learning sign language on his own, so I help him during his learning, and he helps me by wanting to communicate better with me.” It’s just one example of the mutual respect and kindness he helps cultivate on site.
Atiyyah reflected, “Being nominated for this award makes me feel I can accomplish other goals I desire.” His ability to build strong relationships, maintain a consistently excellent standard of work, and remain humble and dependable in all he does makes him a standout among his peers.
My dream job would be… ...where I work at the Fire Services Department. I love the atmosphere – this is my dream job!
Jeremy Hotaling
Liberty Arc | Amsterdam/Montgomery County

Jeremy contributes his talents across multiple product lines and locations, including Liberty Industrial Center and Liberty Enterprises. Reliability is one of Jeremy’s standout qualities. Jeremy is not just a dependable employee – he’s also a positive influence on those around him. He is respectful and kind, and stays clear of workplace drama, always aiming to create a positive and productive atmosphere.
When a co-worker was struggling at the job site, Jeremy stepped up, without being asked, to support his colleague, reassure him, and help maintain morale across the team, reflecting not only his professionalism but his empathy and leadership.
Jeremy’s supervisor has worked with him for about three years, and said, “Jeremy demonstrates an exceptional work ethic. He comes in for every shift with a smile on his face and a desire to work. You’ll never hear Jeremy complain – once given his work assignment, he gets right to it and always gives his best. He is very versatile, able to work most jobs within the department, and is always willing to help his fellow co-workers when needed. He is truly an asset to our manufacturing team.”
Jeremy worked at several local manufacturers over the years with positive experiences. However, none of those jobs offered the flexibility and sense of teamwork he has found at Liberty Enterprises. His strong work ethic, adaptability, and team spirit make him an ideal representative of Liberty’s mission and values. When asked what his dream job would be, Jeremy said that he has already found it right at Liberty.
I like my job because… ...I enjoy coming to work every day and love the people I work with.
Jeffrey Jean-Pierre
AHRC Nassau | Glen Head/Nassau County
Jeffrey has been a porter at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) since October 2023, approaching his job with zeal and fervor. Being part of a superb team who take pride in helping one another, Jeffrey has emerged as a leader who takes initiative and has quickly become an integral part of his crew. He enjoys quietly helping others when there is a need and does so without seeking recognition.
Jeffrey works the evening shift five days a week with stellar attendance. He eagerly completes tasks such as cleaning bathrooms, disinfecting surfaces, mopping floors, tidying staff gathering places, and emptying garbage cans. Jeffrey understands the importance of completing these tasks wholly and accurately, and has developed a system to ensure that he is meticulous. The DMV is a vast space encompassing many workstations, bathrooms, break areas, and garbage cans and a sea of flooring, all requiring comprehensive attention to detail. Within this immense space, it would be easy to overlook something, but Jeffrey enjoys the challenge and employs his system of cleaning to ensure completion.
Jeffrey enthusiastically tends to each task, and is often willing to do jobs that are less preferred by others. He has the ability to find joy in everything he does, often seeing the “bright side” in the humblest of tasks. Jeffrey’s team has taken very well to him, and he was able to integrate himself quickly and completely. His teammates and management speak enthusiastically of Jeffrey, and the feeling is mutual. There is a warmth and trust that was established quickly.
Being recognized in any capacity will undoubtedly cause Jeffrey to be humble and shy, as he is quiet and self-effacing. AHRC management hopes that such recognition will reinforce what Jeffrey is often told: that he is an essential member of a team that serves a vital role in the community. Jeffrey’s success on the DMV team, and as an individual who desires to grow increasingly independent, is just one building block in what is destined to be a growing tower of achievement.
Jeffrey’s triumphs are an indication of the vital and reciprocal relationship between a person who desires to be a vital member of his community through competitive employment and with NYSID, contractors and vendors, community-based organizations, and employers. Jeffrey serves as an example of the purpose to employ those who are able, willing, and excellent.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...proud that people take notice of my hard work and dedication.
Tyasia Jewell
Peak Performers | Binghamton/Broome County
Tyasia ‘Ty’ Jewell works for Peak Performers as a disability determination administrator for the NYS Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance (OTDA) in Endicott. Her job involves fact-checking disability claim applications, researching the claims, and then presenting the findings to an OTDA disability determination analyst, who will then determine whether or not to award benefits. She periodically answers the phone line and provides status updates to claimants.
Ty previously worked as a UPS driver, an office clerk, a direct care professional, and a phlebotomist. She went to school at Elmira Business Institute to become a medical office assistant. Her role as a disability determination administrator is a perfect marriage of her passion for helping people, background in healthcare, and administrative skill set.
photo not available
After briefly moving to Palm Bay, Florida, Ty relocated back to New York State to be close to family and friends and to better support the needs of her two pre-teen daughters. The move to Florida kicked off a series of brief and unrewarding jobs: she felt unsupported with her ongoing medical needs and found antagonistic workplace cultures. She bounced around between several jobs trying to find where she truly belonged.
Ty has long had a passion for helping other people, and this unfortunately led to her acquiring a disability herself. While working as a direct care professional, she was attacked by one of her patients. Besides the trauma, Ty contracted sciatica for which she must take regular shots. The journey back to helping people with disabilities was a long one, but she overcame this trauma and enjoys her new role that allows her to support people with disabilities in a different way.
Ty feels that Peak Performers and the OTDA have been unmatched in the level of empathy and support they offer to her. She appreciates the time accommodations to see to her ongoing medical needs.
Outside of work and family, Ty is an aspiring writer who is hopeful about getting her observational poetry out of her notebook and in front of other writers.
Ty’s supervisors have been very complimentary of her work ethic, positive attitude, and attention to detail.
I like my job because…
...I’m able to put my best foot forward and show my hard work ethic. I have gotten a chance to prove myself.
Cameron Killian
The Arc of Madison Cortland | Oneida/Madison County
Cameron Killian enrolled in the Arc of Madison Cortland’s Alternatives Site-Based Pre-Vocational Program in May of 2023 to build his skills.
Cameron previously worked at the local hospital doing maintenance work, including serving as an essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. He worked hard during this difficult time, putting in overtime many days as his relief did not show. Cameron received an essential worker bonus, but later learned that the number of hours he worked and the essential worker enhancement put him well over the threshold for benefits.
Cameron and his family struggled for months to explain to the Social Security Administration that they were unaware that the increased hours and essential bonus would negatively impact his benefits. Ultimately, he was ordered to pay back a great deal of money.
After that experience, Cameron came to Alternatives and tried many of the jobs available on Preferred Source contracts, including packaging margarine cups, creating emergency vehicle graphics, and refinishing and refurbishing furniture. He quickly excelled at many tasks and was hired as a production associate by Alternatives in 2025. Cam is no longer enrolled in the Pre-Vocational Program and currently works with ACCES-VR while learning new skills in the Revive furniture refinishing department. He really likes working with equipment and would someday like to learn how to operate the CNC machine or work with computers.
Cameron’s patience and calm demeanor make him a great candidate for the Outstanding Performance Awards Program. His desire to learn and master new tasks has allowed the supervisory staff to expedite his training and show him more involved tasks of reupholstery.
Alternatives is very proud of Cam and his ability to overcome several obstacles to get where he is today, and looks forward to his continued progress forward.
I like my job because… ...I like to work independently, taking things apart and putting them together.
George Kithcart
Gateway Hudson Valley | Kingston/Ulster County
The halls of Gateway have been filled with George’s infectious laugh and magnetic personality for 20 years. For those same 20 years, the NYS Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) building in Kingston benefited from George’s dedication and expertise in keeping their halls clean, safe, and sanitary.
George came to Gateway in 2005 through an ACCES-VR referral. He had gone through some serious legal issues due in part to impaired judgement as a result of substance use disorder. George had become clean and sober, but was unsure of his career path, looking to find more meaning and purpose in life. He struggled in school due to multiple learning disabilities that affected his verbal and written communication skills, judgement, and social interactions. These challenges, along with his legal issues, were barriers to finding employment and becoming independent and self-sufficient.
With assistance from vocational supports, George enrolled in Gateway’s custom cleaning enclave as a trainee. George said that he always had a knack for cleaning, and found it to be meditative and satisfying. He liked that he was able to see a concrete result when he finished a cleaning project. George was given an opportunity to be part of an enclave that cleaned the Kingston DEP building. As he became more adept at his craft, he began to work more independently. When given the opportunity to apply for a permanent janitorial staff position at Gateway, George jumped on it. Due to his outstanding work in the enclave, he was quickly hired and assigned to the same DEP contract at which he had been a trainee.
George has held his staff position at Gateway for 12 years, becoming the “go-to person” on the contract. He has excellent rapport with the DEP staff, and with his supervisor and fellow co-workers. George’s dedication, reliability, and work ethic are unmatched. While he likes to laugh and joke around, he takes his job and tasks seriously.
George’s contributions to Gateway’s custom cleaning department are indelible. He shows up to his shifts without fail, helps train new staff members, and increases the morale and motivation of those around him. Due to the enhanced wages on NYSID contracts, George is financially self-sufficient, living solely on the wages that he earns through working. He is proud that he is able to contribute to his household, helping to pay for bills, food, and home maintenance. George’s wages also allow him to own and maintain his truck, plus take vacations and explore new areas with his girlfriend. George’s equitable pay has increased his ability to become more independent, maintain sobriety, and remain integrated and connected to his beloved Kingston community.
If I didn’t have this job…
...I would be working more hours at a low wage entry-level job that I imagine I would not be too fond of.
Brian Malone
Center for Disability Services | Albany/Albany County
Brian Malone is a dedicated and highly valued employee at the Mail Fulfillment Center operated by the Center for Disability Services.
Brian previously served as a convenience store clerk, a 20-year tenure marked by reliability and stellar performance. Unfortunately, he was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming out of those years, Brian’s strong support system of his parents and Wildwood employment specialists assisted him in coming to the Mail Fulfillment Center affirmative business for an employment assessment, during which his strong attention to detail, positive attitude, and exceptional productivity quickly become apparent.
Brian was offered a position as a mail processing clerk in 2022, performing mail fulfillment tasks on a limited, part-time basis. Initially reserved and timid, Brian adapted to his new career. His mastery of the required skills and quiet determination led to an expanded schedule and greater responsibilities. Today, he plays a vital role on critical contracts, including the NYS Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance and large print mailings, where he consistently exceeds expectations in both accuracy and output.
Brian also supports machine operators and is willing to take on additional responsibilities. He has become a cornerstone of the team. He is known for his punctuality, professionalism, and drive to identify the next task without prompting, qualities that exemplify an ideal employee. His positive impact extends beyond his performance, as he fosters a welcoming environment for new staff and contributes to a culture of mutual productivity and efficiency. His growing confidence has inspired both peers and supervisors alike, enriching the overall workplace dynamic.
Outside of his professional achievements, Brian leads a rich and active life participating in the Wildwood Bowling League, cooking daily meals for his family, and traveling. Brian is also the family’s “social director” who coordinates weekly facetime calls with his extended family. He pays special attention to make sure that everyone remains connected and involved.
Due to his outstanding job performance, Brian has been given extra days to work, allowing him to save funds to support his travels. He has explored destinations including Ireland, various parts of Europe, Disney World, and several national parks. Brian travels with his family and with groups from Wildwood. He is also an avid movie enthusiast and enjoys watching film trailers, travel videos, and WWF wrestling.
Brian’s journey from pandemic-related job loss to becoming a high-performing, independent mail processing clerk is a testament to his resilience, dedication, and capability.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would probably just be sitting at home.

James Mertz
Warren, Washington & Albany Counties ARC | Slingerlands/Albany County
James (Jimmy) Mertz is a valued, appreciated, and adored member of the WWAARC family who began working for the Agency in 2013. Throughout his tenure, Jimmy has flourished on the custodial team. A once shy and soft-spoken individual, he has transformed into an outgoing, engaging, and personable fellow who is always willing to lend a hand. However, his personal growth is not simply limited to being a good guy. Jimmy has come to develop and maintain strong, harmonious connections with countless people within and associated with WWAARC.
Although he possesses a strong work ethic, Jimmy struggled to find employment. The moment he was hired at WWAARC, all the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. He eagerly began to explore complex janitorial processes. Through training, guidance, and repetition, Jimmy mastered the floor and carpet cleaning equipment. By continually focusing on proper and efficient machinery usage, he intuitively honed his skills. Jimmy’s confidence, pride, and sense of accomplishment became obvious. As his fortitude progressed, other interests which once seemed unachievable suddenly became possible.
Jimmy began stepping out of his comfort zone, expanding upon his repertoire. Tapping friends, family and his WWAARC family for support, he began performing yard maintenance and vehicle detailing, and soon had a base of satisfied and loyal customers. The once bashful, reserved young man became a confident outgoing gentleman.
Jimmy’s personal and professional growth created positive impacts in his personal life. In addition to his own business endeavors, he regularly assists his brothers on jobs, as both are tradesmen. Furthermore, he has become more involved with his church and regularly works in faith-based, projects, affairs, activities, and community programs. The support, guidance, and training which Jimmy continues to receive at WWAARC has truly had positive impact. Not only does he cherish the ongoing support, but he also is grateful for the relationships he has developed.
Although it was challenging for him to initially open up, Jimmy has formed close bonds with many people throughout the Agency. It’s not uncommon for him to have a cup of coffee with someone or engage in conversation within the hallway. Nor is it outside of the norm to find Jimmy helping someone bring materials from one location to another. He genuinely values the experiences and relationships that have changed his life for the better. Jimmy knows he will always have his WWAARC family there to support him, and the Agency is fortunate to have such a loyal and kindhearted individual on the team.
My paycheck helps me to… ...buy things I need and also help my family.

Over the years, James worked in a few different situations prior to being hired for the cleaning crew in 2022 through ACCES-VR. He was eventually approved for OPWDD services, through which he receives ongoing job coaching support.
James’ immediate supervisor and job coach, who have both worked with him over the past few years, describe him as an amazing team player who is always willing to jump in and lend a hand where needed. He willingly puts aside what he is doing to answer a question or help a fellow co-worker with a problem or task. James eagerly picks up additional shifts and has no problem doing any task that he is assigned.
James is an incredibly hard worker who always has a friendly, warm smile on his face. He is positive and has a very upbeat nature to his personality. He is very honest and has phenomenal problem-solving skills, enjoys fixing things, and “tinkering.” James will often help his supervisor whenever needed, who is thankful that he can count on James to help him in a pinch.
James has worked very hard to develop professional habits, such as ensuring that he is following agency protocol and procedures with calling off and has vastly improved his attendance over the past year.
James is an avid animal lover, enjoys spending time with his family and friends, being out in the community, fixing things, doing yard work, watching movies, and playing video games. While he is happy working in the cleaning business for now, he has dreams of potentially working in a small restaurant washing dishes or working in a pet store. James would like to work full-time in the next few years and looks forward to taking on additional roles, responsibilities, and tasks as he learns and matures as an employee.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...happy to be doing this job.
Mark Natalzia
People Inc. | Depew/Erie County
When Mark first came to People Inc., he was a much different person. Today, he is a friendly and well-liked gentleman, known for his politeness and genuine effort to be considerate of others. His love for antique cars, oldies music, and Buffalo sports teams adds joy and balance to his life.
Mark was educated in special education classes in the Lancaster School System, entering the workforce with a strong desire to succeed. He held positions at Goodwill Industries and a local supermarket, but struggled with changes in routine and job demands.
It was clear that Mark needed a more supportive environment where he could build long-term skills and confidence. In 1989, he was referred by ACCES-VR to the People Inc. employment program, a turning point. The program offered him the chance to try various work tasks with hands-on training, consistent support, and a focus on skill-building. Although he had good basic work skills, Mark struggled with social interactions and multi-step tasks. He often experienced anxiety and anger when his routine was disrupted, and found it difficult to admit when things didn’t go well.
Over time, Mark grew into a dependable worker in People Inc.’s contract manufacturing program, appropriately handling stress with a calmer demeanor. Social interactions that once caused discomfort became opportunities for connection. Work tasks that once seemed overwhelming became routine for him.
Mark was encouraged to try community employment again, which offered continued on-site staff support. Having staff nearby eased some of his anxiety as he began learning the janitorial field, including skills like stripping and waxing floors. Eventually, Mark no longer needed close supervision, demonstrating mastery of his duties and a newfound independence. He also enjoyed the increase in his wages.
For nearly 15 years, Mark has been employed on NYSID cleaning contracts, beginning at the Lancaster Police Station where he was recognized by its staff for great work performance. As his skills developed, he worked at other notable locations, including the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, NYS Thruway Authority, and the NYS Department of Transportation. Mark earned praise at each site for his reliability, work ethic, and attention to detail.
Mark now works successfully in the community and takes pride in showing up each day, walking to meet his transportation regardless of the weather. He lives independently, with the support of his nephew, and continues to face each day with a sense of responsibility and pride. His journey has been shaped by many small successes, each one building toward the confident, capable man he is today.
My dream job would be… ...to work at a classic car dealership, greeting people and helping them.

She currently enjoys working at Arnold Avenue and has a goal to advance to a competitive community employment.
Diem stays active in the community when she’s not working, through weekly bowling, eating out, and swimming. She takes pleasure in having an active social life that includes attending dances, local fairs, and craft shows. She has a passion for various arts and crafts and delights in gifting the finished products to peers and staff. Diem travels to Florida each December to visit Disney World for five days. She also enjoys camping trips over the summer weekends and interacting with nature. Wanting to remain on the go, Diem consistently walks with staff at the local gym and mall two days per week.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would be looking for work or finding a nice program to attend. I like to be busy.
Jorge Ortiz
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany | Albany/Albany County
Jorge has come a long way from sleeping in abandoned buildings. He became addicted to heroin and alcohol at age 11 and spent years living on the streets. In and out of jail numerous times for drug sales and possession, he eventually ended up at Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility in Wilton, through the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment program. Since then, he has made incredible strides, maintaining his recovery for an amazing 37 years.
Three years ago, however, life hit a low point, and Jorge was suffering from depression. Unemployed with only a seventh-grade education, he didn’t know how he was going to support his wife and 16-year-old son. He was anxious about losing his home because he didn’t know where he was going to come up with the needed money to pay his mortgage. Not knowing where else to turn, Jorge reached out to Catholic Charities, which responded to his basic needs by placing him in a supportive employment position through NYSID.
Jorge began working as a cleaner at the Capital District Psychiatric Center through Rayben Enterprises, an approved NYSID Corporate Partner. With great attention to detail, he quickly mastered the art of floor cleaning, becoming an expert at stripping and waxing. His skills, combined with his natural leadership abilities, resulted in Jorge earning a well-deserved promotion to weekend supervisor. His supervisor describes him as an integral team member who can be trusted to take on any task.
Jorge has developed close working relationships with his colleagues, but what is most striking to his supervisor is the way he shares his experience with others who are new to recovery. “Jorge brings a unique recovery perspective to help us create a safe and supportive workplace for everyone,” said his supervisor, Miss Curtis. “His bilingual skills are an added plus as he’s been able to help us connect to and communicate with Spanish-speaking workers.”
In his spare time, Jorge continues to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings on a regular basis. He enjoys spending time with and being present for all of his son’s activities. Being open and honest about his past has had a positive effect on his son’s choices. Jorge has reestablished relationships with his nine siblings who now see him as a productive member of society. He is grateful for Catholic Charities, Rayben, and NYSID for giving him the opportunity to support himself and his family.
I like my job because… ...I get treated with dignity and respect.
Robert Palmer
The Arc Jefferson-St. Lawrence | Watertown/Jefferson County
Robert Palmer is one of the most reliable workers at JSLC Enterprises, the production division of The Arc Jefferson-St. Lawrence. Robert is a highly experienced production worker, so he is often called upon to do a variety of tasks with a positive, can-do attitude. He is always willing to learn more, and is well-liked by his peers and quick to help them.
Robert graduated from Watertown High School in 2008, where he studied building maintenance through the BOCES program, moving on to JSLC a short time later. He started at Production Unlimited where he did screen-printing, die-cutting, and kitting, eventually transitioning to NYSID and federal projects where he has become the supervisor’s right hand man.
Looking ahead, Robert aspires to be a graphic designer. He currently works some hours in the print shop, where he has helped troubleshoot the large flat-bed printer when needed. He hopes there will be an internship in this department in order to learn more skills.
Outside of his full-time job, Robert enjoys gaming and spending time with his family. He enjoys thrifting and going to antique stores with his mother, searching for vintage games and comic books. He also enjoys playing music and spending time with his girlfriend at waterparks and walking nature trails.
Robert is thankful for a job that gives him purpose and makes him feel proud. “Working here has been like family to me. I love what The Arc stands for,” he said.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would probably not have the benefits given to me. I feel this is the best fit for me.
Vicky Parmelee
Human Technologies | Utica/Oneida County
Vicky Parmelee is a steady force of excellence and positivity who redefines taking pride in one’s work. As the sole day porter on a NYSID contract at the NYS Insurance Fund in Binghamton, Vicky brings unmatched reliability, professionalism, and warmth to everything she does. Her floor isn’t just clean, it’s consistently flawless. She has the trust of her supervisors, the appreciation of the customer, and the admiration of everyone who passes through the building. Vicky’s presence transforms the workplace into a space where care, consistency, and community thrive.
Vicky lives with clinical depression and anxiety – challenges that for much of her life made holding a job difficult. But at Human Technologies, she found an employer who saw her potential and provided the support she needed to succeed. Through flexible scheduling, regular check-ins, and space to prioritize her mental health, Vicky has thrived. That foundation of support became even more vital as she navigated an extraordinary period of personal issues a few years ago. In just over two years, she lost her granddaughter, grandmother, and mother, watched her son nearly die in intensive care, and faced serious health issues of her own. Despite it all, Vicky never gave up. And because Human Technologies stood beside her, Vicky was able to keep showing up, keep working, and keep making a difference.
Vicky works independently and is responsible for the full upkeep of an active, high-traffic call center: sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, window cleaning, bathroom sanitation, trash removal, and more, executed with precision and consistency. Due to her exceptional attention to detail and strong work ethic, she operates with minimal oversight and supervision, allowing her supervisor to focus on broader operational needs with full confidence in her site. In addition to her own responsibilities, Vicky serves as a quiet leader and mentor, often checking in on fellow employees at other sites to offer guidance and encouragement drawn from experience.
Vicky sees her excellence as expected, not exceptional, but those around her see the impact of her attitude and work ethic every single day. She doesn’t seek recognition, but deserves it in every sense. Outside of work, Vicky finds peace and joy in spending time with her family and being outdoors fishing, hiking, and camping. Fishing, with its quiet patience and attention to subtle detail, mirrors the qualities she brings to her work: calm persistence, sharp awareness, and an ability to wait, listen, and act when the moment is right.
Vicky’s story is a powerful example of what inclusive employment makes possible. Given the opportunity to shine, she brings forward her abilities, her heart, and her leadership in quiet but lasting ways. She doesn’t just do her job, she enriches the environment around her.
My paycheck helps me to… ...cover my bills, but it also gives me the freedom to enjoy life, go out, suppport my grandchildren at school events, and even lend a hand to my children when they need it.

He was always punctual, completed his job as expected, and reported to his supervisors when done. Anthony excelled as a cleaner and treated management and his co-workers with respect. He was soft-spoken, treated his team with respect, and took pride in his work. Anthony kept his team safe when snow removal needed to be done on outdoor stairwells and when completing standard tasks that included mopping. He has been recognized by the Office of General Services and Green Facility Solution management for his work ethic and performance.
Next up the ladder for Anthony was being appointed to lead supervisor, working Monday-Friday. He diligently learned how to organize and compile quotes, prepare for the various ongoing events for the Concourse and Plaza, and complete the full scope of work of this large space, exceeding expectations. He continues to motivate his team and provide extraordinary service.
Anthony has faced challenges in his life, yet has moved forward with confidence and enthusiasm. As a result of his personal experience with recovery, he understands the obstacles that some of his staff have been through, and helps prove to them that it is never too late to excel, do better, and be successful.
“Working for Green Facility at the Concourse has positively impacted my life,” Anthony said. “It has allowed me to work with like-minded people who share similar goals. Earning a paycheck and being able to support my children has significantly improved my attitude and life, making me a better father.”
Anthony takes immense pride in his custodial expertise, which he gives back by volunteering to clean his local Boys and Girls Club.
If I didn’t have this job…
...I would probably be working at a job that was not the right fit. This job allows me to work with amazing people who motivate me to be a positive influence.
Richard Schreffler
JM Murray | Cortland/Cortland County
Richard Schreffler’s journey is a true testament to perseverance, strength, and the power of being seen for your abilities, not your limitations. Since 2018, Richard has been a dedicated member of the JM Murray team, working in both full-time and part-time roles. Due to ongoing physical challenges, he has transitioned between these capacities as needed.
Early in life, Richard faced challenges both academically and socially. Diagnosed with a learning disability, he received extra support, but continued to struggle and was often treated as an outcast by his peers. He graduated with low confidence and a deeply wounded spirit. Entering the workforce, Richard secured his first job, but was discouraged when penalized for working more slowly than his co-workers. Employment became a series of challenges and disappointments, marked by employers who were either unable or unwilling to support him in achieving success despite his disabilities.
Coming to JM Murray seven years ago, Richard found both purpose and pride. He is known for being dependable, on time, and eager to take on extra shifts to support his team, and is proud of his work ethic.
Richard’s regular income allows him to maintain his own apartment and manage a car payment, important milestones in his independence. Based on previous bad experiences, Richard was fearful of living in a group home, and credits his job at JM Murray with giving him the freedom and dignity of living life on his own terms.
Outside of work, Richard takes pride in using his income to support the things he loves – supporting his partner, caring for his cat, and even buying cars. Having financial stability and a supportive workplace means he can show up for the people he loves without sacrificing his livelihood. His job at JM Murray made it possible for him to take a trip to Florida to spend meaningful time with his father before he passed away.
Richard says his supervisor does far more than just manage his work schedule – she’s a steady source of guidance and support for both him and his girlfriend, in and outside of work. “She encourages us to make good, informed decisions,” he explained. That support made a real difference when Richard was scammed while trying to buy a trailer.
Before coming to JM Murray, Richard never felt like he belonged. Reflecting on how far he’s come, Richard stated, “At JM Murray, I’m not judged or punished for how I work. I’m supported for who I am. This is the only place that truly sees my abilities, lets me work at my own pace, and makes me feel safe asking for help. Without JM Murray, I wouldn’t be working.”
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...seen! I’ve been noticed. I’ve worked hard for this.
Eric Shell
Mozaic | Waterloo/Seneca County
Eric Shell has been a dedicated member of the Mozaic team for more than 16 years, performing several different jobs at a variety of sites, consistently demonstrating reliability, adaptability, and pride in his work across a variety of roles and settings.
In 2009, Eric applied to join Finger Lakes Textiles and was officially welcomed onto the team. He quickly adapted to the new environment and excelled at communicating with co-workers. From the start, he proved to be a fast learner, mastering multiple tasks including sewing and trimming government fleece and wool hats, and tagging.
What sets Eric apart is his eagerness to grow and his ability to adapt to change. When Finger Lakes Textiles began producing mesh laundry bags for correctional facilities through NYSID contracts, Eric embraced the opportunity to learn this entirely new process. He successfully trained on cutting and sewing mesh fabric, assembling the closure components, and tying and measuring drawstrings to exact specifications. His work was meticulous, ensuring strings were tied tightly and evenly, and that each product met NYSID’s high quality of standards.
Based on his flexibility and success, Eric was approached to learn how to cut and sew the mesh bags. He jumped at the chance, demonstrating eagerness and a desire to expand his knowledge and skills. Eric’s initiative and attention to detail led him to learning the full production process, including box labeling, packaging, and preparing shipments. His cheerful attitude and dedication made him a natural fit for this expanded role, and he consistently completes his tasks with pride and precision, which is just one more reason that Eric is a stand-out employee.
In addition to his work on mesh bags and closures, Eric also assists with sewing wool hats and repacking toilet seat covers for NYSID orders. No matter what the task, he consistently maintains high productivity while prioritizing high quality as well.
Eric’s story showcases what makes NYSID contracts impactful. He brings enthusiasm, accuracy, and a strong work ethic to everything he does. Eric finds working at Finger Lakes Textiles is an enjoyable job where he can focus on the quality of his work, all while earning a paycheck that supports his free time.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would be struggling to find a job that I can handle at my own pace.

My paycheck helps me to… ...pay my rent and help my mom with the bills.
Tim Steves
The Arc Wayne | Newark/Wayne County
Tim Steves has been a custodian on several different Preferred Source contracts since 1999. Tim comes in every day with a positive attitude and eager to do his job. He is currently cleaning in multiple locations with little to no supervision. This past year, Tim has worked hard to improve his quality and quantity of work and does so independently. These improvements make him a NYSID Outstanding Performer.
Following high school graduation, Tim worked in many different jobs including restaurants, even though he wasn’t happy in that field. He came to The Arc Wayne in 1992, first doing production jobs until moving into a janitorial position that same year. Tim has continued to excel over 33 years, working on different NYSID contracts and filling in for the janitorial department at many contract sites.
When Tim started working at the Finger Lakes DDSO Newark Campus, he finally felt he was in the right place. He worked with a team at various buildings on the Newark Campus, becoming valued as someone who could be switched to different buildings as needed. Over the past few years, Tim has worked full-time at three different buildings which he cleans independently. He has learned how to manage his time in order to complete all the tasks on his own, and how to judge which tasks sometimes need more attention. Tim has also learned to keep track of the paper and cleaning supplies at each building, and let a supervisor know when he needs an order. Tim has worked hard to maintain his independence at these sites.
When he’s not working, Tim enjoys spending time at home with his family. Tim and his wife have been together for more than 30 years, and have two children. Both kids have graduated high school, and the older son has been working full-time for Newark High School for many years. Tim and his wife also own and maintain their own home, so his paycheck is important to their security.
Tim has proven to be a NYSID Outstanding Performer at work, and to be a person with a strong sense of family values. His job is his dream job.
Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...appreciated for the work I do.
Armando Torres
The Arc Erie County New York | Buffalo/Erie County
Armando is a dedicated and hardworking member of the janitorial mobile program, consistently delivering exceptional service across a wide range of NYSID contracts.
Armando approaches his daily work with a strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and pride. He completes every task thoroughly and efficiently, often going above and beyond to ensure that the sites are cleaned to the standards of the customer and the department. His attention to detail and reliability have made him an essential member of the NYSID janitorial contracts team. Armando oversees the mobile team, who clean about four to eight sites per day. Customers always have great things to say regarding Armando and his team:
• “Armando and the team will take care of the cleaning and any requests in good time. We are happy with them.” Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority
• “Armando and the crew are great. All requests are taken care of that day.” NYS Office of Mental Health
• “Armando and the crew are wonderful, always pleasant, and take care of the cleaning in a professional manner.” NYS Thruway Authority
Lenny Campbell, Operational Crew Chief of NYSID janitorial sites and Armando’s supervisor stated, “For a long time, we had issues with the mobile crew. That was until we hired Armando for the position. He brought stability to the sites. The sites are well maintained, and as seen by the quotes from our contacts, they are all satisfied with their services. He is a true team player, willing to help when and where needed. If we have a call-off and we ask him to take the mobiles to cover, the answer is always ‘no problem.’ If I need help on the floor or carpet work, I know he’ll answer the phone. I love supervising a guy like that.”
Watching the growth of Armando over the years has been impressive. He started off as a very shy and timid worker, but one that always caught the eye for great quality work ethic. Today, he is a vocal leader of the mobiles, whose passion has spread among the team. It’s been truly enjoyable to watch his growth, and where it will go. Armando represents the very best of what NYSID’s mission stands for: providing meaningful employment opportunities to individuals who bring skill, heart, and dedication to their work.
If I didn’t have this job…
...I would be broke and heartbroken; I love my job.
Elliot Torres
Fedcap Rehabilitation Services | Manhattan/New York County
In 2002, Elliot Torres struggled under a cloud of uncertainty. His profound hearing loss makes speech comprehension very difficult, and he had not completed high school. Elliot was unemployed, receiving Supplemental Security Income, and living with his mother who suffered from a serious illness. He didn’t know where to turn.
A home health aide began to work with Elliot’s mother, and she took an interest in her client’s devoted son. She told Elliot about the services offered by ACCES-VR to individuals with disabilities, and helped him get in touch through the proper channels.
Elliot was accepted into Fedcap’s Career Design School Custodial Training Program, forging his path forward to employment and independence. He successfully completed the training program in 2003, and began working as a Fedcap custodian at the Cadman Plaza Federal Courthouse complex in Brooklyn. Elliot continued to build his skills, mastering the use of various special cleaning equipment. In one instance, he was sent to Washington, DC on a special assignment to polish sandstone flooring in the Capitol Visitors Center.
Elliot’s high-level skills, adaptability, and willingness to change work locations on short notice have made him a sought-after employee. He takes great pride in his work.
“It’s rewarding to know that what we do keeps operations safe and on track,” he says. He has worked at many Fedcap sites over the years, including several NYC Department of Sanitation sites, NYC Human Resource Administration sites, and the Jacob Javits Federal Building in downtown Manhattan. In January 2024, Elliot was transferred to the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building and promoted to work leader.
Elliot excels as a work leader, setting high standards for himself and his team. He also has great empathy for those who report to him and supports them. Fabio Lopez, Fedcap Area Manager, concurs: “Elliot always reaches out and assists employees, going above and beyond the requirements of his position.”
While Elliot is proud of what he has accomplished at Fedcap, his greatest joy comes from watching his three children flourish and succeed. Elliot spends many Sundays with his son’s family. His son is a dental assistant as well as the pastor of his congregation. His older daughter graduated high school and will attend college to become a veterinarian. His youngest daughter is still in high school, and has already enrolled in an Army National Guard program.
Elliot feels his children are succeeding because he has been able to provide a foundation on which they could grow. “This job changed my life. It allows me to support my family and invest in our future. I have been a role model for my children, and they want to do even better than me.”
Being nominated for this award makes me feel…
...appreciated and humbled. It’s an honor to know that the effort I put in every day is noticed and valued.
Clive Tucker

The mental and emotional strain of navigating the world while managing a condition that affects both perception and behavior can be overwhelming, particularly for someone in a fatherly role. Clive has struggled over the years to find balance between managing his illness, supporting his family, and staying connected to a sense of self-worth.
In November 2017, Clive became part of the Project CLEAN Vocational Training Program. While participating in WellLife Vocational Services, he found the turning point in his struggle. In Clive’s own words, “The training has helped me to strengthen my relationship with my children and stabilize many career prospects.”

Katelyn Wieczerza
eBizDocs | Albany/Albany County
Katelyn excelled academically throughout her education, but also contended with stress and anxiety, particularly in social situations. While considered a model student, she experienced perfectionism and imposter syndrome. In high school, she struggled with depression and other emotional challenges, feeling “not enough.”
Moving on to studying film and television at New York University (NYU), Katelyn continued to earn excellent grades, but her emotional struggles deepened despite assistance from NYU’s student therapy program. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, but returned home without securing a job in the field. Depressed and unable to find gainful employment, Katelyn felt like a burden to her family. After ultimately finding a therapist with whom she “felt heard,” she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 22, a diagnosis that allowed her to better understand herself.
With the new perspective this provided, Katelyn first worked in a fast food business, which became a stepladder to a more established community employer with a history of hiring people with disabilities. What began as a hopeful position ended poorly after six years when Katelyn became hospitalized for six days. She then began an intensive inpatient care program that led to additional diagnoses and more specialized therapy for emotional dysregulation.
Through a patient advocate at the hospital and with new mental health skills at the ready, Katelyn was referred to ACCES-VR, finally finding herself on the right path. ACCES-VR connected her with an employment specialist who helped pinpoint where she might fit best vocationally. She was introduced to eBizDocs, a document management business, where she had an interview and tour. She left feeling comfortable and hopeful for the first time in ages.
Beginning at the entry level at eBizDocs in August 2019, Katelyn quickly found it to be an open and supportive environment, and she slowly opened up to her co-workers. Management was flexible and accommodating to the varied workforce, putting her at ease. Katelyn’s abilities and skills were recognized past the shroud of her disability, and she was offered additional training opportunities in different departments, allowing her to build confidence and self-esteem. She opened up socially and has since developed strong friendships that expand beyond work hours and provide her with further emotional support.
She has flourished vocationally through new assignments, and is a co-project lead today.
With support and advocacy that does not demonize her neurodivergence and mental health struggles, Katelyn has truly found a better quality of life both professionally and personally.
I like my job because…
...our office is a safe and understanding environment that accommodates my needs. I feel capable and proud of the work I do.
Peter Wood
The Arc Ontario | Canandaigua/Ontario County
Peter can be described in so many words. He’s a great team player with an awesome work ethic. He shows up ready to work with an excellent attitude. He seldom calls off and always goes above and beyond. When Peter first got to The Arc Ontario, Spot On Cleaning, he was doing such a great job, he wanted to try out a different type of environment, so he left to try out a position in a school district. Peter did not like that as much, so he soon returned to Spot On and has since excelled! He has always been known for his positive attitude.
Peter used to miss a few cans, or spots here and there, but since working hard on improving his skills, there is not much he needs to still improve upon. He has faced many challenges, especially with transportation, but he has also mastered that recently, and is doing a wonderful job communicating with his team. The smile that Peter shares with everyone is only one reason to have him around. No matter what happens in Peter’s world, he comes to work ready to get the job done. Peter has fantastic listening skills and always is a pleasure to talk to.
It took Peter many months to adjust and learn. The patience given to him has helped him blossom into one of the most reliable people on the crew. Peter not only can handle his tasks, but has become one of the most versatile crew members, someone who will do anything required for the job.
Peter has worked on himself from the ground up, making sure that he can do the jobs and tasks given to him. He does not finish until all tasks are complete. The crew shares so much admiration and appreciation for all that Peter tackles. He deserves to be recognized for the strength and capabilities he has proven to have.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would have to be on disability and I do not want that.
Heather Worden
The Arc Otsego | Oneonta/Otsego County
“Be kind, be patient, stop and listen, learn, and don’t judge.” These words to live by are truly a reflection of Heather Worden.
Heather grew up with her twin sister, Holly, and an older sister, Kristi, in Cherry Valley. She joined Creekside Industries, a division of the Arc Otsego, after high school, and enrolled in Creekside’s Vocational Training & Services Program. She embraced each new work assignment with enthusiasm and a single-minded determination to master the necessary tasks.
Three years ago, Heather set a goal to become part of the production team, one she realized in January 2025 when her hard work, exceptional work ethic, and great attitude earned her this coveted position. She now works five days a week in an hourly paid position, quickly becoming a valued member of the production team for NYSID and several commercial customers.
Creekside’s incontinence and personal care products are purchased by nursing homes, residences operated by OPWDD’s Developmental Disabilities Services Office, and other non-profit services providers that support individuals with disabilities. As Heather put it, “Working here helps us, and making these (products) helps people who need them.”
Throughout her years at Creekside, Heather has worked at a high level, often exceeding production goals. The impact of her new status has been significant. In the first half of 2025, she almost doubled her earnings compared to a year ago, and has visibly grown in confidence to become a true role model for others.
Terri Murray, Production Supervisor at Creekside, stated, “Heather is a great asset to the production space at Creekside dedicated to packaging and processing products sold by NYSID. She knows all the packaging specs and pallet patterns, and is fast at running machinery.”
When she isn’t at work, Heather enjoys working on diamond art projects, caring for her three dogs and one cat, and watching movies. Each year, she looks forward to attending Bible camp in Pennsylvania where she enjoys reconnecting with fellow campers.
As for her future, Heather shared, “I used to think that I wanted to work either at a supermarket as a cashier or as a waitress in a restaurant. Now I’m not so sure. I really like making things, so I’ll learn as much as I can and see if I can get a different job here, or look for a job outside of Creekside where I can learn new skills.”
While she enjoys the peaceful, rural area of Otsego County where she lives, Heather may move into Oneonta to be near friends, go shopping, or just take a walk along Main Street.
I like my job because…
...It keeps me busy and focused. When I’m working, I’m always trying to learn new skills, get better at what I do, and take on more responsibilities.
