Suzanne Tucker

Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award

Suzanne Tucker is recognized as one of the country’s leading interior designers, known for her personal and enduring style, her great attention to detail, and passion for architecture and decorative arts. Architectural Digest has honored her repeatedly on the AD100 list of top designers, and she is included in the Elle Décor A-list and the Luxe Gold List. Tucker and her husband/partner Timothy F. Marks, founded Tucker & Marks in 1986, building it into the distinguished firm it is today. Suzanne Tucker Home was launched in 2010 with her textile, tabletop, and home furnishings line.

She has written multiple publications, including her latest book Extraordinary Interiors (The Monacelli Press, 2022). Tucker serves as a director on the National Board of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) and has co-chaired the Arthur Ross Awards in New York since 2014. She is one of the founding directors of the Northern California Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and currently Director Emeritus, having served on the board for fourteen years. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation and is a fellow of The Garden Conservancy.

In 2015 Tucker received the Design Leadership Award, in 2016 she received an ICAA Julia Morgan Award for Residential Interior Design, and in 2017 she was the inaugural honoree at the ICAA Northern California Legacy Dinner. In 2020, Tucker was honored with a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Academy of Art University.

John Edelman

Larry Kravet Design Industry Leadership Award

Having purchased Heller, the company of his dreams, in May 2022, John Edelman now serves as its CEO and president and is dedicated to steering the future of this iconic furnishings brand to even greater heights. Edelman also sits on the Chilewich Board of Directors, (serving once again with his long-time friend and collaborator, John McPhee) as well as continuing as the executive chairman of Crypton Fabrics.

Edelman served on the Board of Trustees for DIFFA, and currently serves on the Boards of Design Leadership Network and Be Original Americas. Edelman is the co-founder of the beverage brand Fourth & Pride Vodka, which donates 5% of profits to LGBTQ+ organizations, fully integrating his business acumen with his lifelong advocacy work.

Spending 14 years at Edelman Leather, including six as president and CEO, Edelman’s leadership approach was defined by his family’s principles of authenticity and “doing well by doing good.” Along with John McPhee, they re-envisioned the company, and soon established Edelman’s family namesake brand into a global trademark by expanding into four luxury lifestyle categories—private aviation, hospitality, corporate interiors, and residential interiors— before helping facilitate their sale to Knoll Inc. in 2007.

In 2010, Edelman and McPhee purchased Design Within Reach (DWR) and revitalized the once-troubled retailer into the world leader in authentic modern design by eliminating knockoffs, repairing vendor relationships, re-training sales teams, adding trade and contract divisions, expanding product development, and opening new DWR Studios. In 2014, Herman Miller Inc. purchased the renewed DWR and Edelman stayed on as CEO of both DWR and Herman Miller Consumer Group before departing in 2019.

In May 2022, Edelman was honored with an honorary doctorate of fine arts from the New York School of Interior Design.

Ashley Abaunza ’24 (MFA1)

NYSID Alumni Scholarship Recipient

Ashley Abaunza is enrolled in the MFAI Program at NYSID. Abaunza holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and minors in Spanish and mechanical engineering from Northeastern University. She started her career in experiential marketing, developing an array of project types, including pop-ups, trade show booths, and brand activations, as an experience strategist on the IBM account. When COVID sent the world online, Abaunza fully realized her love of the built environment and its power to influence well-being. She followed her passion for design and moved from Boston to New York to pursue her master’s at NYSID.

Over the past two years, Abaunza has bolstered the NYSID community. She is the president of the IIDA Campus Center and participated in charitable projects, designing a sensory garden for the Lavelle School of the Blind and NYSID’s first Design on a Dime room vignette. Her projects create unique narrative environments, each with defined journeys that reflect a deep understanding of their users. Upon graduation, Abaunza looks forward to designing commercial interiors and implementing impactful design solutions for inclusive, human-centric spaces.

SPECIAL THANKS AND GRATITUDE BACCARAT

* as of March 28, 2023

Our appreciation to Baccarat for being the awards sponsor for NYSID’s 2023 Gala. Thank you for donating and engraving the stunning crystal Octogone vases for our distinguished honorees–Suzanne Tucker, John Edelman, and Peti Lau ’11. We are proud to be partnering with Baccarat for the third year in a row.

DAVID BOATMAN, BOATMAN MEDIA

Many thanks to the talented David Boatman for concepting and producing the spectacular videos about our three honorees. The evening would not be the same without them. We are incredibly fortunate to be in the capable hands of Boatman Media for the third year in a row.

MARIA AND BILL SPEARS

Our gratitude to Maria and Bill for making it possible for NYSID to have our annual Gala at the spectacular University Club over the past number of years. We also thank you for your friendship and generosity.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

Awards are presented in the following categories to individuals or companies in residential or commercial design who have made noteworthy contributions to the interior design profession.

At each Gala, awards are bestowed in three of these categories. In 2023, we will present the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award, the Larry Kravet Design Industry Leadership Award, and the Rising Star Award.

NYSID CENTENNIAL MEDAL

This Medal was established in 2016 to commemorate NYSID’s 100th anniversary. It is awarded every few years to an individual who has had a significant impact on the industry over a period of many years, and is also recognized for their many contributions to the wider community. Past awardees include James Druckman (2016), Charlotte Moss (2017), Patricia M. Sovern (2017), and Jamie Drake (2022). The sterling silver medallion, designed by the artist Michele Oka Doner, presents an emerging growth form, a kind of tree of life, simultaneously representing the growth of knowledge and the organic nature of design.

ALBERT HADLEY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Since 2011, NYSID has been presenting the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award to individuals who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of interior design. The award is named in memory of the iconic interior designer Albert Hadley, a long-time member of NYSID’s Advisory Board. A good friend of the college, Hadley generously gave his time to the institution and its students. In addition, he was also the benefactor of the Albert Hadley Scholarship Fund at NYSID

Past Hadley honorees include such illustrious designers, as Mario Buatta (2011), Jack Lenor Larsen (2012), Geoffrey Bradfield (2013), Mariette Himes Gomez (2014), John Rosselli and Bunny Williams (2015), Ellie Cullman (2016), David Kleinberg (2017), Suzanne Rheinstein (2018), Jeffrey Bilhuber (2019), Brian J. McCarthy (2020), and Alex Papachristidis (2021).

LARRY

KRAVET

DESIGN INDUSTRY INNOVATION/LEADERSHIP AWARD

This award is presented to an individual or company who has helped advance the field of interior design in a significant way and is a leader in the industry. Presented for the first time in 2019 to Christopher Spitzmiller (Innovation award), we presented the 2020 Innovation award to Gale Singer (Circa Lighting) and Andy Singer (Visual Comfort & Co.), the 2021 Leadership award to Corey Damen Jenkins, and the 2022 Leadership award to Young Huh.

The Kravet Award is named in memory of Larry Kravet, an icon within the interior design industry, who passed away in 2018 at age 92. He transformed his grandfather’s small tailoring shop, established over 100 years ago, into Kravet Inc. Under his leadership, Kravet Inc. grew into North America’s largest integrated ‘to the trade’ wholesaler of decorative home products and one of the country’s foremost purveyors of fabric, furniture, wall coverings, and carpet. Mr. Kravet was the third generation of a now five-generation family company. His daughter, Ellen, is Chairman of the NYSID Board, and is helping continue his legacy both at NYSID and Kravet Inc.

RISING STAR AWARD

The Rising Star Award is presented to a designer, preferably a NYSID alumnus, who is hitting their stride in the profession. The award honors a talented individual relatively early in their career, who is becoming a recognized name in the field and demonstrates great promise and leadership. Presented for the first time in 2019 to Alberto Villalobos ’06, we presented the 2020 Rising Star Award to Elizabeth Lawrence ’03, the 2021 award to Nina Farmer ’02, and the 2022 award to Laura Hodges ’09. We are thrilled that The Shade Store has been a sponsor of this award since 2019.

For three generations, service has been the foundation of The Shade Store. As the leader in custom window treatments, it is committed to providing the finest quality drapery, Roman shades, and roller shades, a great value and an exceptional customer experience. The brand’s exclusive collection of more than 1,300 in-stock materials and industry-leading C.O.M. program give designers virtually endless creative opportunities. The Shade Store has some of the fastest lead times in the industry, with orders shipping in 10 days or less and C.O.M. orders shipping in 15 days or less. With nationwide measurement and installation services, The Shade Store can work with designers on projects all over the country to ensure the perfect fit every time. At all of The Shade Store’s 100+ showrooms nationwide, expert design consultants help designers realize their vision for beautiful window treatments. For more information, please visit theshadestore.com.

The board, faculty, and staff of NYSID are delighted to congratulate this year’s distinguished honorees: Suzanne Tucker, John Edelman, and Peti Lau ’11.

Thank you for everything you have done to make this evening a resounding success!

The NYSID Alumni Council honors the history and mission of the college and maintains a meaningful connection among graduates—past, present, and future. Ours is a commitment to create opportunities for one another and to deepen the bonds between us. As ambassadors, we engage in philanthropic activities to support NYSID’s scholarship programs while steadfastly supporting its achievement as one of the leading interior design programs in the country.

NEW YORK SCHOOL OF INTERIOR DESIGN

The New York School of Interior Design has been leading the study of interior design for over a century. A private, nonprofit college focused exclusively on interior design, NYSID offers certificate, undergraduate, and graduate programs for students at all stages of their careers—whether they’re just becoming familiar with the discipline, considering a career change, or looking to deepen their knowledge in a particular area. Consistently ranked one of the top interior design programs in the United States, students study both residential and commercial interior design, some with specialties in sustainable design, lighting, and healthcare interiors. NYSID students enjoy a small class size and sharp focus, receive a great deal of personal attention from dedicated faculty, and go on to practice at the highest levels of the profession.
