Master of Professional Studies in Design of Healthcare Environments The healthcare industry is rapidly expanding to accommodate the growing needs of the aging baby boomer generation and the global population explosion. In response, NYSID has created an innovative, interdisciplinary program that provides designers an opportunity to learn from practicing healthcare designers, engineers, capital projects team members in healthcare institutions, and healthcare environment researchers. The result is curriculum that provides a broad knowledge of current issues, research, and theory in the design of healthcare interiors that is applied in focused studio experiences. NYSID.EDU

Courses include knowledge in research methods, history and theory of healthcare, environmental and behavioral studies, and applied design. Sustainable design and lighting research focused on healthcare environments are integral parts of the course of study. In the Innovation & Design Lab courses, projects can range from wellness, retail, and mental health settings to outpatient and inpatient clinical facilities. Additionally, the program will familiarize students with the business side of healthcare: why projects are started, how they are financed, how they are implemented in healthcare institutions, and the role of interior designers in the project continuum. The program prepares graduates to begin working in design firms focused on health, healthcare and wellness and in design and facility groups within healthcare and wellness institutions, or other related fields.

The program requires full-time study and can be completed in one year. All classes are offered in the evenings and on occasion weekends. Students can study on-site or online with live classes delivered via videoconferencing. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in interior design, architecture, engineering, or a closely related field and submit a portfolio of their work.

Note: Completion of this program does not lead to licensure in architecture or interior design.
