NEW YORK STATE WOMEN'S SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

CONDUCTED BY THE Pinehaven Country Club - Guilderland, New York
August 24-25, 2021

To all the participants, spectators, and volunteers, I bid you welcome to the New York State Women's Senior Amateur Championships. The New York State Golf Association is privileged to join with the management and staff of Pinehaven Country Club to provide a memorable challenge in crowning New York’s premier senior golfers.
It is a great pleasure to return to this course designed by Jim Thompson and Aramand Farina, and more recently renovated by Rick Jacobson. It has been the site of memorable New York State Championships like the 2008 Men's Amateur, 2002 Women's Amateur and 1998 Men's Amateur.

On behalf of the entire New York State Golf Association, I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to the management, clubhouse staff, Golf Professional staff, and especially the course grounds crew of Pinehaven, whose combined efforts has provided us with this wonderful venue in the historic Pine Bush area of Albany County.
As past experience has demonstrated, we certainly expect an exciting championship competition, which will challenge the golfers to employ all of their golfing skills.
Additional thanks go out to our dedicated NYSGA staff who, with our tournament volunteers, work so hard to provide a tournament worthy of its talented competitors.
This is a wonderful opportunity to put the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and focus on the true enjoyment that the game of golf brings us. So, here’s wishing all the participants the best of luck and, no matter the outcome, please enjoy this experience and the great memories this beautiful venue will bring you.
Sincerely,

Joe Enright, President New York State Golf Association

Pinehaven Country Club is a private golf club located in Guilderland, New York, located just west of Albany. Opened in 1960, the club is currently celebrating its 61st year of operation. The course’s demanding 6,500 yard layout is carved through the pine barrens of the historic pine bush area of Albany County. Over the past several years, the club has undertaken a number of course renovation projects. The master plan, directed by noted course architect Rick Jacobson, made what was already one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in upstate New York even more so.
Pinehaven’s sand base course cushions golfers steps and offers speedy drainage, forcing virtually no course closure due to rainy weather. Pinehaven is usually the first course to open in the Spring and the last to close in the Fall, providing members with many months of fine golf.
Pinehaven’s state of the art electronic irrigation system completely waters tees, greens, fairways and rough making all 18 holes as beautiful as they are challenging.
Thank
you to the staff at Pinehaven for hosting this year’s championship!

325 YARDS
325 YARDS
The opening tee shot is to a narrow uphill landing area. Most players will select a club off the tee to avoid the fairway bunkers that flank the fairway at 150 yards from the green. The approach shot must be properly judged to avoid the slopes in front and to the left of the green.
335 YARDS
247 YARDS
A demanding tee shot to a tight fairway starts this short par 4. Drives favoring the left side of the fairway leave a better approach angle to the green. The second shot is to a two-tiered green with water left and a bunker guarding the front right.
145 YARDS
145 YARDS
The main challenge occurs on and around the green of this difficult par 3. The long two-tiered green has two bunkers guarding its front. It is imperative for the tee shot to be played in the same tier as the hole location or a three putt is possible.
344 YARDS
265 YARDS
From the tee, hole number four looks simple enough. Players will find it necessary to hit the fairway off the tee to hold the elevated mounded green with their second shots. The front right is guarded by a deep greenside bunker.
340 YARDS
289 YARDS
This elevated tee offers a beautiful view of the fifth hole and the surrounding area. This is another hole where there is tremendous advantage to hitting your approach shot from the fairway. Players are advised to keep their approach shots below the hole on this elevated green that slopes severely from back to front.
464 YARDS
395 YARDS
The only par five on the front nine will allow players the opportunity to either play it safe off the tee and hit to the corner of the dog-leg or become mroe aggressive and drive over the trees on the corner. The well-guarded green sits down in a hollow, with tricky bunkers both to the front left and right of the green.
328 YARDS
245 YARDS
This blind dogleg right par four requires the longer hitter to stay right of the directional flag off the tee to hit the fairway. The green, with its two distinct tiers, is one of the most challenging on the course. When the pin is on the lower tier, players must avoid over-clubbing and ending up in the upper tier as they may not be able to keep their first putts on the green. Missing the green on the left presents a challening up and down.
378 YARDS
378 YARDS
The first of three holes that have been renovated in the past ten years. The landing area is pinched by three difficult fairway bunkers on the right and left. The severely sloped green has been been altered but the three greenside bunkers that surround it were all redesigned in the renovation.
123 YARDS
123 YARDS
A short par three that requires you to position your shot in the same area as the pin to avoid a sloping putt. Beware of the right-side bunker, as it is nearly impossible to get up and down from it.
348 YARDS
260 YARDS
The ideal tee shot should be positioned in the right side of the fairway. The approach shot is the most demanding of any of the par fours, as the elevated green has a severe slope both in front and behind it. Players going over the green will risk making a high number.
145 YARDS
145 YARDS
This is the longest par three on the course; it requires a long iron or fairway wood to a large green that slopes from back to front. Players will need to be careful to avoid the left greenside bunker, since it is a difficult up and down from it.
325 YARDS
240 YARDS
This short par four has two of Pinehaven's signature trees positioned to the left front of the green. Drives must be kept to the right to set up a good angle to attack the pin. A large ravine protects the right side of the green.
288 YARDS
288 YARDS
The second of the holes that have been recently renovated. The tee shot needs to favor the right side of the fairway to set up an ideal approach. Players will have to avoid a series of bunkers that extend up the right side from the fairway to the green. There is a large ravine over the back of the green that comes into play.
126 YARDS
126 YARDS
Nicknamed "Little Poison," this hole lives up to its name by showcasing the toughest green complex on the course. This short uphill par three will make players work for thier par. The safe play is to judge one's approach to stay below the hole no matter where the hole is located.
415 YARDS
365 YARDS
The shortest par five on the course can be reached by longer hitters in two shots with a mid to long iron. Judging one's approach correctly is crucial to this elevated mound green which is surrounded by three bunkers.
315 YARDS
315 YARDS
This is rated the most difficult hole at Pinehaven. It begins with the most demanding tee shot on the course to a narrow fairway. The second is a mid to long iron into a green with ponds guarding the left side and the back. Par is always an excellent score on this hole.
397 YARDS
397 YARDS
A reachable par five, this hole starts with having to negotiate two ponds off the tee. The approach is from an uphill lie to a smallish green that slopes from front to back. The two bunkers in front are well short of the green and pose a difficult up and down
320 YARDS
320 YARDS
The third hole that has been redesigned in the last ten years, number 18 is a long par four that offers the widest fairway on the course. The second shot is played to an undulated green surrounded by three bunkers. Par is always a good score on this strong finishing hole. #17 #18 PAR 5 PAR 4
Each hole includes yardages for both the senior and super senior divisions.

2019 CHAMPIONSHIP

SICARD CLAIMS THIRD SENIOR
Mary Sicard of Queensbury Country Club won her third title at the 67th New York State Women’s Senior Amateur Championship at Bristol Harbour Golf Club.
It was only her fourth attempt.
She led the field by three strokes after the opening round of play, and cruised to a four-stroke victory on the Robert Trent Jones Layout to once again hoist the Anne Coupe Cupp.
“I’m so excited and thrilled. A lot of people were rooting for me, and I appreciate that,” she said about the victory.
Her first win was at Whiteface in 2016, and then repeated in 2017 at Corning.

“They’re all very special. First one obviously because it’s the first at the state level. And then to repeat, when you don’t think you’re going to which was such an unexpected joy. This one, I’m speechless,” she said of the three wins.
Tied for runner-up honors, were 2019 NYS Women’s Senior Four-Ball Champion Carina Watkins of Beaver Meadows Golf Club and Penny Schiek of Hiland Park Country Club at 156. They played together in the penultimate group off No. 1 during the final-round shotgun.
“I didn’t know where I was in the standings. I didn’t feel like I started well, but I managed to not explode. I had four birdies on the round which I don’t tend to do in an event like this. Anytime I can have a 70s round anywhere I’m happy,” said Schiek.
Carolyn Mancini of Binghamton Country Club finished in solo fourth at 159. 2018 champion, Tammy Blyth of Monroe Golf Club, 2019 NYS Women’s FourBall co-champion Pennie Carlo, and Patricia Mayne of Western Turnpike Golf Club all finished at 160 tied for 5th.

COLLIFLOWER WINS FIRST NYS TITLE
Kitty Colliflower was able to claim her first state title in 2019 after a pivotal birdie putt on the fifteenth hole allowed her to take the lead permanently.
In the 13th NYS Women’s Super Senior Amateur, Kitty Colliflower of Oak Hill Country Club claimed her first New York State title after shooting 76 in the final round in tough, wet conditions.
“I finally did it.”
The player from Rochester won by four strokes over past champion Michelle Marquis of Pompey Club (2014 winner at Kanon Valley).

Michelle Marquis
Marquis finished as the runner-up at 161. She had a lead on Colliflower after the 6th hole, and the two battled back and forth throughout most of the round.
The final swing of momentum came on the 15th hole when Colliflower sunk a 12-foot birdie putt while Marquis made bogey. Colliflower regained a stroke advantage, and then parred out the final three holes to secure the title.
“It was hard for me, because it’s something I’ve always needed to work on. For some reason or another, I was calm today and made the shots that I had to. Got up-and-down and made some critical putts down the stretch.”
Colliflower’s best finishes in the Women’s Senior was two runner-ups, her most recent in 2014 at Kanon Valley. She began competing in the Super Senior division last year, and placed in third in her first attempt.
“She’s always had a great game and is a terrific competitor. We’ve been competing for probably twenty years. I just play my game as best I can. I was very happy with the way I played yesterday and today,” said Marquis.
Maggie Kril of Durand Eastman Golf Club and Jo Ann Shupe of Beaver Meadows Golf Club finished tied for 3rd at 167.
Three-time NYS Women’s Senior champion, Sue Sims of Skaneateles Country Club finished in fifth at 168.
We’d like to recognize our fellow regional golf associations in New York State for the exceptional work they do in promoting the game of amateur golf.
