NEW YORK STATE WOMEN'S AMATEUR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club - Cicero, New York

July 23, 2021

CONDUCTED BY

To all the participants, spectators, and volunteers, I bid you welcome to the New York State Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championships. The New York State Golf Association is privileged to join with the management and staff of Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club to provide a memorable challenge in crowning New York’s premier women's amateur and senior amateur four-ball teams.

It is a great pleasure to return to this historic Stephen Kay design, which has been the site of several memorable New York State Championships, including the 1939 Boys' Junior, 1949 Mens' Amateur, 1949 Mens' Senior, 1964 Girls' Junior, 1965 Womens' Senior and the 2004 Mens' Senior and Super Senior.

On behalf of the entire New York State Golf Association, I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to the management, clubhouse staff, Golf Professional staff, and especially the course grounds crew of Lakeshore, whose combined efforts has provided us with this wonderful venue at located along the picturesque south shore of Oneida Lake.

As past experience has demonstrated, we certainly expect an exciting championship competition, which will challenge the golfers to employ all of their golfing skills.

Additional thanks go out to our dedicated NYSGA staff who, with our tournament volunteers, work so hard to provide a tournament worthy of its talented competitors.

This is a wonderful opportunity to put the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and focus on the true enjoyment that the game of golf brings us. So, here’s wishing all the participants the best of luck and, no matter the outcome, please enjoy this experience and the great memories this beautiful venue will bring you.

Sincerely,

CONDITIONS OF PLAY

Eligibility

The Championship is open to female amateur golfers who are members of the NYSGA (defined as either belonging to an NYSGA member club or joining the NYSGA directly as an eClub member), and have an active USGA Handicap Index issued by the NYSGA member club.

Format

This Championship will be conducted over 18 holes of four-ball stroke play. There will be a net and gross winner in each division. In the event of a tie for the Championship, a sudden-death playoff will be held immediately following play (gross only). All other ties will be broken using the USGA recommended method of matching scorecards.

Championships

There are two championships being conducted concurrently:

3rd NYS Women's Amateur Four-Ball (all ages)

3rd NYS Women's Senior Amateur Four-Ball (both players ages 50+)

Handicap Allowances

Women will receive 95% of their Course Handicap. If a side has a Course Handicap difference of more than eight strokes, an additional 10% reduction will be applied to the Course Handicap of both members of the side (per USGA recommendations).

Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club was established in 1860 and is nestled on 150-picturesque acres on the south shore of Oneida Lake. The club’s par-72, 18-hole golf course originally opened for play in 1928 and has since been renovated by golf course architect, Stephen Kay.

Lakeshore’s lakeside clubhouse includes a golf shop, a restaurant and the most picturesque banquet facilities anywhere, providing the ideal setting for weddings, parties and other celebrations.

In 1860 Henry & George Crownhart purchased Norcross Point and constructed the first incarnation of Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club. The Ocean House operated into the 1880's when it burned down. The Angler's Club later acquired the property, rebuilt and lost that building to fire in the early 1900's. Due to all the fires that had reduced the prior clubs to ashes, they built the current clubhouse in 1910.

At the time this building was a state of the art project, being made of steel and concrete. They operated it into the early 1920's. The building then became the Bayshore Inn. In 1927 the Inn became Syracuse Yacht & Country Club. The current incarnation, Lakeshore YCC, was instituted in 1954 and remains one of the premier golf and country club experiences in Central New York.

Thank you to the staff at Lakeshore for hosting this year’s championship!

Lakeshore Yacht & CC is located in Cicero, New York.

FIRST-TIME PAIR CARLO/CUPP CAPTURE TITLE

FIRST TIME |

1 Pennie Carlo/Lauren Cupp Crestwood

2 Tammy Blyth/Jenna Hoecker Monroe GC/Brook-Lea CC

3 Amanda Gaffney/Samatha Gaffney Brookfield CC

(+3)

Lauren Cupp of Yahnundasis Golf Club & Pennie Carlo of Crestwood Golf Club finished three strokes ahead of the field to capture the 2nd New York State Women’s Amateur Four-Ball title at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y.

The duo carded a one-under 71 to secure the title. This win marks the first NYSGA title for Carlo and second for Cupp, who won the Women’s Mid-Amateur at Schuyler Meadows Club in 2017.

“We had a really tough start. We both had a really rough first hole and then got it going. Penny had a ton of birdies, I think between us we had nine birdies,” Cupp said. “We had two long decent putts that really got us going,” Carlo added.

This is the first time Carlo & Cupp have competed with each other at a large tournament; normally they are competitors.

“We usually play against each other. It was nice not having to root against her (Carlo) all the time,” Cupp said.

Amanda & Samantha Gaffney of Brookfield Country Club won the low-net category with a combined handicapped score of 8-under 64. The Gaffney sisters won the 2018 Women's Four-Ball Championship at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell.

Pennie Carlo and Lauren Cupp teamed up for the first time to win the NYS Womens' Amateur Four-Ball, marking Carlo's first NYS title.

CLELAND/WATKINS GO BACK-TO-BACK

In the Senior division, Teresa Cleland of Bellevue Country Club & Carina Watkins of Beaver Meadows Golf Club collaborated for their second straight NYS Senior Women’s Four-Ball title.

“I think we wanted it more this year than last year,” Watkins said. “The field was stronger we felt this year, so we really felt that we needed to pay attention and get off to a good start and we did. We started out strong and made the turn at two-under,” Cleland said.

The teammates finished at 2-under 70, just a stroke ahead of Joy Florczak & Maggie Kril of Durand Eastman Golf Club.

Kelly Dempsey of Seven Oaks Golf Club & Penny Schiek of Hiland Golf Club won the low-net in the Senior championship with a combined handicapped score of 11-under 61.

Cleland & Watkins victory marks a combined eight NYS amateur golf championships between the two competitors. Cleland is a three-time Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion (2011-13) and a two-time Women’s Senior Champion (2009, 2010). Watkins won the 2011 Women’s Senior Championship at Clifton Springs Country Club.

“It’s fun to win something and it has been really fun to play with Carina. To win this twice with Carina is awesome,” Cleland said. “It really is awesome. Tee will always be my first pick,” Watkins added.

Teresa Cleland and Carina Watkins have won the first two NYS Womens' Senior Amateur Four-Ball championships.
