To all the participants, spectators, and volunteers, I bid you welcome to the New York State Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships. Once again, the New York State Golf Association is privileged to join with the management and staff of Leatherstocking Golf Course to provide a memorable challenge in crowning New York’s premier Men’s Amateur Four-ball teams.
It is a great pleasure to return to this historic Devereaux Emmet design which has been the site of many memorable New York State Championships including the 1958 and 1962 Women’s Amateur, the 1964 Men’s Amateur, the 1972 Senior Amateur, and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship. And since 2013, Leatherstocking has hosted the Men’s and Senior Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

On behalf of the entire New York State Golf Association, I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to the management, clubhouse staff, Golf Professional staff, and especially the course grounds crew of Leatherstocking whose combined efforts has provided us with this wonderful venue in one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations in New York State. As past experience has demonstrated, we certainly expect an exciting Championship competition which will challenge the golfers to employ all of their golfing skills.
Additional thanks go out to our dedicated NYSGA staff who, with our tournament volunteers, work so hard to provide a tournament worthy of the talented competitors.
This is a wonderful opportunity to put the past year of the Covid pandemic behind us and to focus on the true enjoyment that the game of golf brings us. So, here’s wishing all the participants the best of luck and, no matter the outcome, please enjoy this experience and the great memories this beautiful venue will bring you.
Sincerely,

Joe Enright, President New York State Golf Association

The Leatherstocking Golf Course resides at The Otesaga Resort Hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of America and a National Register for Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The hotel is located on the southern shore of Lake Otesgo, creating impeccable waterfront views. In 1909, the owners of The Otesaga wanted to provide their guests with the great American pastime of golf. Devereux Emmet was hired to design an 18-hole course adjacent to the hotel. The course is set up at 6,401 yards and is played to a par of 72. Leatherstocking Golf Course is one of The Otesaga’s top attractions and one of the top resort golf courses on the East Coast.
The course has homed many amateur championships throughout its history, including the 1958 & 1962 Women’s Amatuer, as well as the 1964 Men’s Amateur, 1972 Men’s Senior, and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur. Since 2013, Leatherstocking has hosted the Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships.
Thank you to the staff at Leatherstocking for hosting this year’s championship!

Nick Dilio (Links at Union Vale) and Ryan Gabel (Southern Dutchess Country Club) shared a very memorable week at Leatherstocking Golf Course during the 9th NYS Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
/ B.
The Dutchess County duo posted a historic 10-under 62, followed by a bogey-free 67 in high winds on Wednesday to each capture their first NYS title.
“We tried to win the day. We had another goal of shooting 62, but wasn’t going to happen in these conditions,” Dilio said of the morning weather on Otsego Lake. “He (Gabel) got off to a really hot start. That got us going. We knew the holes we really needed to score on and took advantage of the ones we needed to.”
Gabel birdied two of his opening three holes, Nos. 1 and 3. “We were able to keep everyone within an arm’s length. We became more conservative as the tournament went on, and I think it was the right strategy,” he mentioned of playing from out in front.
Finishing two strokes back were defending champions Billy and David Hanes (Crag Burn Golf Club) who went low with a bogey-free 8-under 64 during round two to climb into the runner-up position.
Christopher O’Keefe (Nassau Player Club) and Dave Segot (Bethpage State Park Golf Club), co-leaders after the opening round, finished tied for third at 133 after posting 68.
Joining the Long Island players at 11-under was Kevin Vandenberg (Tuscarora Golf Club) and Brad Monroe (Timber Banks Golf Club and Marina).
This was Dilio and Gabel’s debut in the championship, and the first winners from the Hudson Valley to bring home the hardware.

In the 8th NYS Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship, Wade Sarkis (Canandaigua Country Club) and Ken Ogden (Oak Hill Country Club) captured the 2019 title by two strokes.
1
They outlasted the 2017 champions, Kevin Webb (Mendon Golf Club) and Robert Branham (Canasawacta Country Club) during the final round, and finished at 12-under 132.
The sides were paired together in the final round, and shared the lead after posting tournament-low 65s in round one.
“We were one up most of the day. Then it got to be two or three,” said Sarkis, who was the runner-up at the 2018 NYS Men’s Senior. “When we both got it on the green and Kenny had a good look at birdie on sixteen, I was finally relaxing. Three up with two to go and we figured a couple pars would do it.”
The runner-ups, Webb and Branham, finished at 134. They birdied 17 to get in striking distance, but couldn’t find any magic on the long home hole over the water, finishing with pars.
“We hit some very conservative shots on eighteen,” Ogden noted of the pair just trying to avoid mistakes on the iconic lakeside hole.
In solo third at 138 was the 2015 champions Bob Rosen (Country Club of Buffalo) and Matt Clarke (Cazenovia Country Club).
2018 NYS Men’s Super Senior champion Jim Hamburger and fellow club member Steven Stuetzle (McCann Golf Course), finished at 140. Tied alongside them in fourth was Michael Grace and John Miosi (Brookfield Country Club).

New York State has many local and regional golf associations that provide a variety of competitions and services to their members each season.
We’d like to recognize our partner regional associations for the great work they do each year to consistently provide alternative tournament options for amateur golfers across the state.
