On behalf of the entire New York State Golf Association, welcome to the 10th New York State Amateur and Senior Amateur Mixed Team Championships!

The NYSGA is pleased to join with the leadership and staff of Leatherstocking Golf Course to provide a memorable challenge in crowning New York State’s top amateur mixed teams.

We are proud to return to this classic Devereux Emmet layout in Cooperstown, which has been the host site of many memorable New York State Championships throughout the decades, including the 1958 and 1962 Women’s Amateur, the 1964 Men’s Amateur, the 1972 Men’s Senior and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur. From 2013-2022, Leatherstocking hosted our Men’s and Men’s Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships.

We certainly anticipate an exciting and memorable competition, and the golf course and setup will surely challenge the players to utilize their full ability and skill.

I’d like to offer our thanks and appreciation to the pro shop staff, and especially the course grounds crew, whose combined efforts have provided us with this wonderful championship venue.

Finally, I’d like to thank our NYSGA staff and fantastic team of tournament volunteers, who work tirelessly to provide a first-class experience and support the talented players that participate in our competitions.

We hope you enjoy this year’s championship and we appreciate your support of our association and tournaments. If there’s anything that we can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of the NYSGA staff.

Sincerely,

The Leatherstocking Golf Course resides at The Otesaga Resort Hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of America and a National Register for Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The hotel is located on the southern shore of Lake Otesgo, creating impeccable waterfront views. In 1909, the owners of The Otesaga wanted to provide their guests with the great American pastime of golf. Devereux Emmet was hired to design an 18-hole course adjacent to the hotel. The course is set up at 6,401 yards and is played to a par of 72. Leatherstocking Golf Course is one of The Otesaga’s top attractions and one of the top resort golf courses on the East Coast.

The course has homed many amateur championships throughout its’ history, including the 1958 & 1962 Women’s Amateur, as well as the 1964 Men’s Amateur, 1972 Men’s Senior, and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur. From 20132022, Leatherstocking hosted the Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur FourBall Championships.

Thank you to the staff at Leatherstocking for hosting this year’s championship!

The side of Gaelin and Michael Carrig (Springville CC) combined to shoot even par 72, in a hard fought battle for the 9th NYS Amateur Mixed Team Championship at Transit Valley Country Club in East Amherst.

The Carrigs cousins were one of five teams tied for the lead as they walked onto the 18th tee box. Michael found the fairway with his drive and Gaelin was able to reach the green in two.

The Carrig duo still had work to do, as they were left with a 30-foot putt for birdie. Michael lined it up and rolled it in, sealing the victory at even par for the tournament.

I was just thinking, have good speed because I didn’t want a super comebacker or ram it by and leave her with an eight-footer coming back,” Michael said. “I just wanted to have good speed and it happened to fall.”

The duo from Springville Country Club started hot and jumped out to an early lead. They birdied four of their first nine holes. Michael credited Gaelin’s

putting for their string of birdies.

“Just setting her up and she was draining 12-footer, 15-footer, a couple good putts by her right in a row,” Michael said.

“Good approach puts you in a good spot,” Gaelin said.

This was the first event the cousins had played in together and Gaelin’s first New York State event.

Four other teams finished at 1-over 73. Amber (Wiltwyck GC) and Martin Pennington (MGA eClub - HV), Julie and Michael Murphy (Brookfield CC), Brian Kumiega (CC of Buffalo) and Claire Yioulos (Oak Hill CC), along with Chrissy (Bellevue CC) and Joe Quijano (CC of Troy) all finished just one stroke off the lead.

This is the second straight year that the Pennington duo has finished in second place. They held the lead until back-to-back bogeys allowed their competition to close the gap down the stretch.

The Murphy duo, who won the mixed team in 2017, were the 2022 net champions at 5-under 67.

Heavy rain throughout the morning delayed the shotgun start from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The wet, rainy conditions continued throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

In the 9th NYS Senior Amateur Mixed Team, Kim Kaul (East Aurora CC) and Andrew Melnyk (Tuscarora GC) were able to get over the hump and claim the team title. They lost in a sudden-death playoff during the 2021 mixed team championship at Brook-Lea Country Club to two-time champions Lisa and Kevin Webb (Clifton Springs CC).

The victory marked Kaul’s fourth state title. She is a three-time NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Champion, having won in 2008, 2015 and 2021, but the mixed team was her first team win (she followed it up by winning the 2022 NYS Women’s Senior Four-Ball at Stafford last June, only a week after her Senior Mixed Team win).

“It’s awesome to play a team event,” Kaul said. “I think we play off each other very well and we know each other’s strengths… Andy is a great putter and hits a great ball off the tee, and me with a wedge in my hand, we’re golden.”

“I was just thrilled that Kim invited me again to play,” Melnyk said. “I know what a great player she is and it’s

just an absolute honor to play with her.”

Kaul and Melnyk had the lead down the stretch and held on at 3-over 75. They were paired with 2019 champions Traci Petrillo (Penfield CC) and Stuart Harris (Oak Hill CC) who applied pressure to the leaders, finishing one stroke back at 4-over 76.

2019 NYS Women’s Super Senior Champion

Kitty Colliflower and teammate Fred Kulikowski (Oak Hill CC) finished in third place at 5-over 77. They were followed by the defending champion Webbs, and Christy Malo (Park CC) and Nick Amigone III (Transit Valley CC) who finished at 6-over 78.

The senior division net champions were Marylee Pollard and Mike Farina (Ballston Spa CC) in a repeat performance, after capturing the 2021 senior net title at Brook-Lea.
