Welcome to the 2019 New York State Women’s Amateur & Senior Amateur FourBall Championships. The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Ravenwood Golf Club to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top women’s amateur four-ball team.

We are excited to showcase this wonderful design that has hosted past NYS Championships including the 2003 & 2009 NYS Men’s Amateurs, as well as the NYS Men’s Four-Ball Championships in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to the NYS Women’s Amateur & Senior Amateur Four-Ball, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders. These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golfing abilities.

It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.

I’d also like to thank Ravenwood and all the other NYSGA member clubs who generously give their courses and facilities to support amateur golf. We simply could not do this without your partnership.

We hope you enjoy this year’s championship, and will help us spread the word to women across the state about the various competitive opportunities we have available each season.

Sincerely,

Ravenwood Golf Club is a renowned 18-hole course located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. The club opened its’ doors in 2003 and was quickly recognized as one of the “Best New” public courses in the country by Golf Digest. The course, designed by Robin Nelson, is set up at 7,051 yards and is played to a par of 72.

This Rochester course challenges players of all skill levels, allowing golfers to play off of five different sets of tees. The facilities offer a full range of services for golfers, including a lighted all-grass-tee driving range, PGA Certified golf instruction for adults, juniors, and groups, and a practice area to work on your swing.

Many prestigious events, including multiple USGA & PGA qualifiers, have been hosted here. Ravenwood has also homed multiple New York State amateur events, including the 2003 & 2009 Men’s Amateur Golf Championships, as well as the 2011 & 2012 Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships.

Thank you to the staff at Ravenwood for hosting this year’s championship!

Ravenwood Golf Club is located in Victor, New York

CONDITIONS OF PLAY

Entries

The Championship is teams consisting of two female amateur golfers who are members of the NYSGA, defined as (1) belonging to an NYSGA member club or (2) as a 2019 NYSGA eClub member (NYS residency required). Players must have an active USGA Handicap Index issued through a licensed golf club.

Format

This Championship will be conducted over 18 holes of four-ball stroke play. There will be a net and gross winner in each division.

Divisions

There are two divisions in this Championship: the 2nd NYS Women’s Amateur FourBall Championship (all ages) and the 2nd NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Championship (ages 50+).

Ties

The team in each Championship with the lowest score for 18 holes will be the champion. In the event of a tie (gross only) in the Championship, a sudden-death playoff will be held immediately following play.

Handicap Allowances

Women will receive 95% of their Course Handicap. If a side has a Course Handicap difference of more than eight strokes, an additional 10% reduction will be applied to the Course Handicap of both members of the side.

GAFFNEY SISTERS WIN INAUGURAL CHAMP IN PLAYOFF

Amanda & Samantha Gaffney of Brookfield Country Club held off Laura Rentz of Olde Kinderhook Golf Club & Emma Vandecar of Edison Club in a two-hole playoff to secure the inaugural New York State Women’s Amateur Four-Ball title at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, NY.

The two groups, which were paired together for the championship, were tied atop the leaderboard at 11-over 83 when all the scores came in after Thursday’s shotgun start. The groups began a playoff on the 444-yard par 5 sixth hole before moving to the course’s opening hole, #1.

On the first playoff hole, Rentz left herself with a lengthy downhill putt for birdie while the other three competitors were looking to get up-and-down for their pars. Atop the tricky Robert Trent Jones designed greens, Rentz three-putted for bogey, matching the other players and extending the playoff.

At the second playoff hole, a 315-yard par 4, Samantha, the younger of the sisters, converted a 20-footer for par to end the championship.

“The greens were pretty tricky at times,” noted Amanda about the course setup. “I’m thankful I had Sam, she carried me quite a bit,” she confessed. “We started off great, then went through a little bit of a battle. It was a scramble, but we didn’t give up,” finished Samantha.

Samantha & Amanda Gaffney of Brookfield CC took home the 1st NYS Women’s Amateur Four-Ball title.
*Won in playoff

Sharon Harrington of LPGA Women Who Play (CNY) & Kyra Danneker of Drumlins Country Club won low-net in the championship with a combined handicapped score of 7-under 65.

The Gaffney family has now tied for the most state amateur titleholders in an immediate family (3) in NYSGA History alongside Mike, David & Lindsay May of Auburn. John, won the family’s first state title at the 1999 NYS Men’s Amateur at Wanakah Country Club. His son and now professional golfer, Billy, won the 2016 NYS Men’s Four-Ball with partner Jeff Wolniewicz at Leatherstocking Golf Club.

“We couldn’t have done it without them, their constant helping us every day. Our swings, our putting, chipping,” said Amanda about their accomplishment. “They’re our coaches. And our mother too, of course,” they added.

In the Senior Divison of the inaugural NYS Women’s Four-Ball Amateur Championships, Teresa Cleland of Bellevue Country Club (2011-13 NYS Women’s Mid-Am Champion; 2009-10 NYS Women’s Senior Am Champion) & Carina Watkins of Beaver Meadows Golf Club (2011 NYS Women’s Senior Am Champion) collaborated to claim the inaugural New York State Women’s Senior Amateur Four-Ball title.

The teammates finished at 1-over 73, just a stroke ahead of three other groups that finished tied for runner-up.

CLELAND & WATKINS WIN 7TH COMBINED NYS TITLE

1 C. Watkins / T. Cleland

K. Kaul / J. Lavigne

J. Hamm / P. Riedel

/ C. Mancini

5 K. Colliflower / S. Kovach

One of those groups was Kim Kaul of Gowanda Country Club (2008, 2015 NYS Women’s Senior Am Champion) & Jan Lavigne (2007 NYS Women’s Senior Am Champion) of Ravenwood Golf Club, who played in the same pairing as the winners.

“We can’t control their game, only our game. We were trying to stay focused on what we were doing and trying not to get caught up in what they were doing,” said Cleland about playing alongside the two formidable competitors.

The other two groups that finished in second included Julie Hamm of Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club & Patty Riedel of Penfield Country Club as well as Robin Mead & Carolyn Mancini of Binghamton Country Club.

Hamm & Riedel also finished as the low-net winners after breaking a tie at 6-under 66 with Therese DeLuca & Judith Kayne of Tan Tara Golf Club using the USGA recommended method of matching scorecards.

Cleland & Watkins victory marks a combined seven New York State amateur golf championships between the two talented athletes.

“It’s special. For New York State to start a new championship for women, and to be able to win, it’s great,” said Cleland. “We love to play together and have really been looking forward to this. We work off each other and it’s fun, we don’t get down at all.”

“We’re just serious enough, but having a lot of fun too,” added Watkins about their team dynamic.
