Welcome to the 2019 New York State Men’s Senior & Super Senior Amateur Championships. The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Cavalry Club to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top men’s senior amateur golfers.
We are excited to showcase this wonderful design that has hosted past NYS Championships including the 1971 New York State Men’s Amateur Championship, as well as the 1994 Women’s Senior Amateur Championships.
In addition to the NYS Men’s Amateur & Senior Amateur, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders. These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golfing abilities.
It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.
I’d also like to thank Cavalry Club and all the other NYSGA member clubs who generously give their courses and facilities to support amateur golf. We simply could not do this without your partnership.
We hope you enjoy this year’s championship!
Sincerely,
Warren Winslow, President New York State Golf Association
Designed by Joe Lee and Dick Wilson, the Cavalry Golf Club opened to instant acclaim on June 26, 1965. In place of the old horse barns, stood a sparkling new club house and nestled in the sweeping curve of Limestone Creek, an 18-hole golf course was carved into the rolling countryside at a place where, at one time, the troopers and their mounts had prepared to go to war. Enlightened leadership, spearheaded by old troopers from Company C, played a key role in the club’s development, as has the active participation of the associate membership since.
Cavalry Club has homed two other New York State events, the 1971 New York State Men’s Amateur Championship and the 1994 NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Championship.
Thank you to the membership & staff at Cavalry Club for hosting this year’s championship!

Bob Hughes & Wade Sarkis after playoff at the 2018 NYS Men’s Senior Amateur Championship.
HUGHES WINS IN PLAYOFF, HAMBURGER GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE
Bob Hughes parred the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the 2018 NYS Men’s Senior Amateur Championship at Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady.
His opponent, Wade Sarkis of Canandaigua CC, fired a 3-under 68 in the final round to force the extra holes, after both finishing at 2-over 215.
Coming in third, was Jim Mueller of Orchard Creek GC at 216. Michael Dunsmore of McCann GC came in fourth at 217, and the leader through 36 holes, Bob Cooper of Schenectady Muni, ended up in fifth at 218.
The champion out of Ives Hill CC, made his lone double-bogey of the tourney on the 54th hole and was five strokes worse than the opening two rounds.
“My two buddies said I had to two-putt (on eighteen green). I thought that shouldn’t be a problem, I was only at 15 feet. Then I just made a poor stroke.”
The playoff began on the 18th hole and both players made par. They moved to the opening par-4 and placed their second shots onto the green. Hughes elected to chip, while Sarkis preferred to putt his ball. Sarkis lipped out a four-footer and the championship was Hughes to win. He quickly lined up, and knocked down his putt to secure his first NYS title.
“I’m very proud of how I kept it in play today and was able to maintain my focus. I wanted to keep that momentum and I did, so I was pleased with that. Getting into the playoff was certainly a bonus,” he said about the final round.
Bob Hughes & Jim Hamburger took home the 2018 NYS Men’s Senior titles.
Hughes, now 58, had been searching for a NYS title for decades, but never in the Senior Amateur, until last season when he decided to register for the older championship for men 55 and older.
“I didn’t play very well in the state amateur so I was looking for something to end the summer on a high note. I didn’t plan on winning, I just wanted to go out there and show I could play a little better,” he mentioned.
In the Men’s Super Senior, for players 65 and older, Jim Hamburger went wire-towire to win his first state title by two strokes and finished at 7-over 220.
The runner-up Anthony Tomaselli of Yahnundasis GC, ended up two strokes back at 222, although the two were tied headed into the eighteenth hole.
Past Senior Amateur champions Don Van Gorder of Newman Municipal GC and Frank Plata of Hiland Park CC, finished tied at 226. Larry Arliss of Wayne Hills CC and Mark Bonner of CC of Buffalo finished at 227.
Hamburger from McCann Golf Course, felt he had great control of the ball all week long and that was clear through his rounds of 72-74-74 on the tough Capital Area layout to finish at 7-over 220.
Down the stretch, Hamburger started to click. “There were a lot of ebbs and flows, and most of them were not good. I was just trying to survive the best I could and make it competitive,” he expressed.
The two leaders were tied heading up the eighteenth fairway, and Hamburger finished with a birdie while Tomaselli made bogey.
“I reacted well today, just didn’t finish it off,” said Tomaselli about the battle.
Hamburger, competed in his first U.S. Senior Amateur last summer in Oregon and had found something special in his game. “I appreciate it so much because it’s unexpected. All of a sudden, things click.”
“The birdie at the end made it special. I didn’t gag my way in, I did something to earn it. I played fairly well when I needed to and hung in there.”
