Welcome to the 2019 New York State Mixed Team & Senior Mixed Team Championships. The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Teugega Country Club to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top amateur mixed team.

We are excited to showcase this wonderful design that has hosted past NYS Championships, including the 1962 Women’s Senior & Super Senior Championships, 1965, 1974, 1984 Girls’ Junior Championships, 1987 Boy’s Junior and Sub-Junior Championships, as well as the 1990 Men’s Senior & Super Senior Championships, and the 2003 & 2014 Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships.

In addition to the NYS Mixed Team & Senior Mixed Team, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders. These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golfing abilities.

It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.

I’d also like to thank Teugega and all the other NYSGA member clubs who generously give their courses and facilities to support amateur golf. We simply could not do this without your partnership.

We hope you enjoy this year’s championship!

Sincerely,

Teugega Country Club, located in Rome, was founded in February 1899 by Franklin Ethridge. Ethridge, known as “the father of golf”, brought together 125 townsmen to create the first ever golf course in the city.

Eugene Rowland nominated the name “Te-uge-ga”, referenced in the 1851 Annals of Oneida County as the local Indian’s designation for the Mohawk River.

On Independence Day weekend 1921, Teugega opened a new 18-hole course, designed by Donald Ross.

The course is set up at 6,514 yards and is played to a par of 71.

Teugega has homed multiple New York State events, including the 1962 Women’s Senior & Super Senior Championships, 1965, 1974, 1984 Girls’ Junior Championships, 1987 Boy’s Junior and Sub-Junior Championships, as well as the 1990 Men’s Senior & Super Senior Championships, and the 2003 & 2014 Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships.

Teugega Country Club is located in Rome, NY.

Format

This Championship will be conducted over 18 holes at modified chapman stroke play. There will be a net and gross winning team in each division.

Chapman Stroke Play

Two players play as partners, each partner plays from the teeing ground and plays the partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play that ball alternately to complete the hole. This format is modified on par-3s, so that the decision as to which ball to play alternately must be made after the tee shot.

Divisions

There are two separate divisions in this Championship: Amateur (any ages) and Senior Amateur (men 55+, women 50+).

Ties

The team in each Championship with the lowest score for 18 holes will be the champion. In the event of a tie for the Championship, a sudden-death playoff will be held immediately following play. If there is a tie for the net Championship, the tie will be broken using the USGA’s method of matching scorecards.

Handicap Allowances

The player with the lower Course Handicap is allowed 60% of their Course Handicap. The player with the higher Course Handicap is allowed 40% of their Course Handicap.

BRAMAN COUSINS WIN MIXED TEAM, WEBBS WIN SENIOR TITLE

Two cousins from the capital area, Nicholas & Madison Braman collaborated for an even-par 71 to win the 6th New York State Mixed Team Amateur Championship at picturesque Skaneateles Country Club.

Madison, of Shaker Ridge Country Club, and Nicholas, of Town of Colonie Golf Club, won the championship by four strokes over the field. The next closest team, was 2016 winners Andy Conway of Ravenwood Golf Club and Sara Eichelberger of Brook-Lea Country Club at 75.

Finishing in third were defending champions Julie & Michael Murphy of Brookfield Country Club at 76. Tied alongside them was Mark & Alexandria Battle of Ravenwood Golf Club.

The Braman’s took full advantage of the longer holes at Skaneateles, shooting 6-under throughout the layout’s four relatively short par 5s. Starting on hole #3 during the shotgun format, the pair eagled the 18th and then their final hole, #2, to create the separation they needed to take home the trophies.

Winners were also decided for best net score in each division. Mike Farina & Marylee Pollard of Ballston Spa Country Club came out on top with a net 5-under 66 (85 gross).

Nicholas & Madison Braman, Kevin & Lisa Webb took home the 2018 NYS Mixed Team titles.

In the concurrently played senior division, the couple Kevin & Lisa Webb of Mendon Golf Club won by a stroke and registered the lone round under par in the field.

They carded a 1-under 70 which included five birdies and four bogeys, and started hot at 2-under after their first two holes. They slipped a little bit on Nos. 7 and 8 with consecutive bogeys, but steadied the ship the rest of the way.

Stu Harris of Locust Hill Country Club & Traci Petrillo of Penfield Country Club came in second at 71.

In third, finished Cheryl Haggerty of Van Schaick Island Country Club & Paul Pratico of Schenectady Muni Golf Club at 72 (+1).

Defending champions Jim & Patty Schaefer came in seventh, and were unable to get much going during the tournament’s defense.

Net winners for the senior division were John & Vickie Lavalley, who finished at 10-under 61 (81 gross) to win the honors.
