Welcome to the 2019 New York State Men’s Amateur & Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships. The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Leatherstocking Golf Course to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top men’s amateur four-ball team.

We are excited to showcase this special Devereux Emmet design that has hosted numerous other past NYS Championships including 1958 & 1962 Women’s Amateur, as well as the 1964 Men’s Amateur, 1972 Men’s Senior Amateur, and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Since 2013, Leatherstocking has hosted the New York State Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships.

In addition to the NYS Men’s Amateur & Senior Amateur Four-Ball, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders. These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golfing abilities.

It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.

I’d also like to thank Leatherstocking and all the other NYSGA member clubs who generously give their courses and facilities to support amateur golf. We simply could not do this without your partnership.

We hope you enjoy this year’s championship!

Sincerely,

The Leatherstocking Golf Course resides at The Otesaga Resort Hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of America and a National Register for Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The hotel is located on the southern shore of Lake Otesgo, creating impeccable waterfront views. In 1909, the owners of The Otesaga wanted to provide their guests with the great American pastime of golf. Devereux Emmet was hired to design an 18-hole course adjacent to the hotel. The course is set up at 6,401 yards and is played to a par of 72. Leatherstocking Golf Club is one of The Otesaga’s top attractions and one of the top golf courses on the East Coast.

The course has homed many amateur championships throughout its’ history, including the 1958 & 1962 Women’s Amatuer, as well as the 1964 Men’s Amateur, 1972 Men’s Senior, and the 2001 Men’s Mid-Amateur. Since 2013, Leatherstocking has hosted the Men’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships.

Thank you to the staff at Leatherstocking for hosting this year’s championship!

Eight teams tied for second at 9-under 135 including the first-round leaders, Jason Hurley & Ricky Olson of Willowcreek Golf Club.

Jonathan Clark & Jeff Wolniewicz of Crag Burn, played one stroke better than their opening round, posting 68-67 to finish in the tie for second as well.

Billy, the older of the two brothers, captured his first four-ball title back in 2015 with a past partner, Jamie Miller. In 2017, the brothers partnered up for the first time in the championship and finished tied for second. “It’s definitely special to win an event with my brother because we’ve never won anything together,” he commented.

It was also the fourth year in a row that a team from Buffalo’s Crag Burn won the championship. Past winners from the club include Jamie Miller (Wanakah)/Billy Hanes (Crag Burn) in 2015, Billy Gaffney/Jeff Wolniewicz (Crag Burn) in 2016, and Jonathan Clark/Jeff Wolniewicz (Crag Burn) in 2017.

David & Billy Hanes of Crag Burn Golf Club captured the 8th New York State Men’s Amateur Four-Ball title.

BLANK & DUGAN CAPTURE SECOND SENIOR FOUR-BALL

Tom Blank & Mark Dugan won the 7th New York State Men’s Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship by two strokes and finished at 11-under 133 (69-64).

The partners from Oak Hill now have two team state four-ball championships under their belt, their first being when they won the inaugural event in 2012.

The runner-up team was Bill Paulsen of Eagle Crest Golf Club & Jim Mueller of Orchard Creek Golf Club who combined for a 135 over the two rounds.

Finishing in third was 2016 NYS Men’s Senior Amateur Champion, Paul Pratico & his partner Jay Taub. The pair from Schenectady Municipal Golf matched two 68s to finish three strokes off the winners.

Blank & Dugan’s final round 64 was tied for a tournament low with one other team competing in the open division (Dave Pallas & Jimmy Welch).

“Big difference was we didn’t make any bogeys today, and had a few extra birdies,” said Dugan on their round two score. “I don’t think we had a three putt today,” mentioned Blank.

The friends from Rochester enjoy playing together and have been competing in four-ball events together for quite a while. “Tom and I have been playing best-ball tournaments for 30 years, and we’ve won a lot of tournaments,” Dugan remarked. “I don’t know if we’ve ever gone that low.”

Tom Blank & Mark Dugan won the 7th New York State Men’s Senior Amateur Four-Ball title.
