Nordic Update

By Head Cross Country Coach Paul Smith:
Training for NYSEF's Nordic athletes has been going great so far this summer As a team, we are taking seriously the value gained from "breathing hard, often". For our group, it is all about being consistent and making sure that every piece of the training puzzle fits together in our day-to-day flow and rhythm Some days we are running in the mountains at a slow pace for hours, often stopping for swims, and on other days we have more focused training on the rollerski loops, pushing our top-end limits. There is a balance between all of the intensities and modes of dryland training we have - the variety is what makes cross-country ski racing a great sport to pursue in the offseason!

We have added tremendous value to our group this summer, bringing in skiers from the upstate New York and Western Vermont regions for drop-in sessions We also have a small but committed group of collegiate ski racers this summer, continuing the success of our collegiate summer program from its launch last season This makes for a lively and fun group when we ' re all able to train together, which helps the team's bottom line: happy skiers equal fast skiers We have also partnered with the National Paralympic Development Team, Craftsbury Nordic, and Rochester Nordic Racing for training sessions over the past few weeks

August is shaping up to be a busy month for our athletes and staff. The US Ski Team's National U16 camp is coming to town from July 31 - August 2, and NYSEF's Forrest Slingerland was invited to attend! This camp is a pillar development project of the national team where the top U16 athletes from around the country gather for one week of high-level training. The following week, US Biathlon will host a junior development camp, including NYSEF's Abigail Van Dorn. Several of our biathletes will compete in Jericho VT in August as well at the ' summer nationals' rollerski race event In the middle of the month, we will also host our own 4-day camp, more reports on this after. This is the start of a larger Nordic camp series which we will continue into the winter season!

NYSEF Hosts IronKids Lake Placid

NYSEF was elated to be selected as the host of this year ' s IronKids Dip N' Dash and Fun Run on Friday, June 21st, during the annual Lake Placid Ironman Weekend All proceeds from the event registration were generously donated to NYSEF. Over 400 kids from locations around the world participated in the race, which consisted of a swim and run event, a toddler trot, a half-mile foot race, and a one-mile foot race. NYSEF staff was on hand to assist with registration, and hand out medals and freeze pops at the finish line! We had so much fun, and look forward to hosting the event again next year at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Ironman Lake Placid!

Summer Jumping Going Strong
NYSEF's Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined athletes have been hard at work this summer, training almost daily at the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex. Grasshopper Camps have helped our development jumpers advance to the next level and gain confidence in their jumping, while our Lindsay Van Jump Camp facilitated a week of empowerment and fun for the ski jumping ladies of the Northeast. 1980 Olympic Hockey Legend and Gold Medalist Mike Eruzione even stopped out to watch some jumping this month!
