

Wow - what a January! We recently wrapped up 10 days of alpine, freeride, snowboard, nordic, and jumping events at Whiteface, Gore, Mount Van Hoevenberg, and the Olympic Jumping Complex with the 2023 FISU World University Games. Thank you to everyone who showed up and volunteered for NYSEF during the games - it is truly so special to see the way everyone comes together to support our NYSEF athletes and community!
We have a full winter of events still to go, so be sure to check out nysef.org/events. Coming up are the Empire State Winter Games, the FIS Men's Ski Jumping World Cup, the Hole Shot Cross Tour at Gore, NYSSRA Sports Page Cup at Belleayre, the USASA Series, and The 60th Annual Hovey Memorial Ski Race at Whiteface Mountain on February 12th!

Athlete of the Month:
PG Biathlete Tim Cunningham is our January Athlete of the Month! Congratulations Tim! Tim is competing in the IBU Cup and Open European Championships in Switzerland from Jan. 25-29.
Biathlon:
Our season kicked off in early December with some fast racing in Craftsbury, VT. We had most of our athletes land on the podium over the weekend, including Duncan VD, Bella W, Abigail VD, Jenna S, and Sylvia S! A couple of weeks later, our PG Athlete Tim C raced in the US Biathlon On-Snow International Team Trials where he posted notable results, landing him a spot on the IBU Cup and Open European Championships Team. He is now in Europe where he will be racing each weekend against other top athletes from countries all over the world! To follow his results, head to www.biathlonresults.com.
December ended with racing in Anchorage, Alaska for our Paul Smith's College athletes, where they were fighting for a spot on the World University Games Team, as well as Junior World Championships and Junior Open European Championships Teams PSC and NYSEF Biathlete Dolcie T. had some great racing, posting podium finishes in every

OurDEVOgroupbeganwinterpracticeatthebeginningofDecemberandconfidently skiedmanykilometersonthecompetitionloopinbothclassicandfreestyle.When mothernaturesograciouslyspreadfreshsnow,theteamenjoyedabreakfromthe“A Climb”tofocusontechniquesessionswithcoachesChrisRoseandNinaArmstrongon flatterterrain.
Athletescelebratedthebeginningoftheholidayvacationfeastingonwaffleswiththe fullteamatJosie’sCabinThegroupthengatheredwithparents,theJRT,andNYSEF alumniforabackcountryskiintoFishPond,takingabreakforlunchonamagnificently sunnydayattheFishPondLean-To.
OurfirstbigweekendofracingforthisagegroupoccursonJanuary7thand8thatGore SkiBowl.WealsojoinedincelebratingtheopeningoftheWorldUniversityGamesand theopportunitytoforerunincrosscountry,biathlon,andnordiccombinedevents!
A group of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined athletes traveled to Steamboat Springs, CO for the opening US Cup competition of the season the week of December 5th We had a couple of good days of training and some great results for Kai M., Jack K., and Mitchell P., with Kai placing 2nd in the U16 jumping and 2nd in the U20 Nordic combined, Jack placing 9th in the U20 jumping, and Mitchell placing 2nd in the U16 boys jumping.
We also hosted a Junior Championships Qualifier on the K48 in Lake Placid on December 30th Jack K. and Kai M. both won their respective U16 class, with Eli L. also placing on the podium in 3rd for the U16 boys.
NYSEF Alum Tate F. recently placed 24th in a Continental Cup Competition in Sapporo, Japan; objectively meeting the criteria to qualify for Junior World Championships! Tate also qualified for the Lake Placid World Cup, and will compete in front of a home crowd on February 11th & 12th Congratulations Tate!
The FIS team had a great time in Sun Valley! The snow was incredible and we got a lot of fresh snow while we were there. We had five great days of training at both Rotarun & Sun Valley, and then a day off before the four-day race series. We had many great results at the races. To name a few: Charlie H. scored a 60.69 in the first GS and a 89.38 in the second GS Pedro G Scored a 74 04 in the first GS and a 74 37 in the second GS Eduard B. scored an 81.17 in the first GS, and Olivia L. scored a 60.79 in the first SL, getting a 7th place result, as well as a 78.49 in the second GS!
Upon our return to the East Coast, some of our athletes had the opportunity to both forerun and hand out awards at the FISU World University Games at Whiteface.
U16+ alpine athletes from Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface kicked off their competition season with slalom and giant slalom races at West Mountain, Sugarbush, The National Winter Activity Center, and Belleayre in early January. The men threw down impressive performances at both West and Belleayre, sweeping both podiums in a convincing fashion! The women ' s team wasn't far behind, claiming five out of six available podium positions at the events, and placing five athletes in the top ten at Belleayre! These events helped athletes build confidence and prepare to transition to Super G training and competition blocks on our home mountains in the upcoming weeks.

Athletes will race GS and slalom at Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface in the upcoming weeks.

NYSEF sent a hefty crew of U12 alpine athletes from Whiteface and Gore to West Mountain over Martin Luther King Weekend to compete in the first Mountain Council giant slalom of the season! NYSEF had seven girls and six boys in the top ten of their respective races Congratulations to all of our racers!

Snapshots of fun from Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface as our U10 and U12 athletes began their year on snow!
Whiteface and Gore freeride athletes competed in their first railjam of the season at Whiteface on December 18th. Snowboard athletes Brynn H. and Logan C. won their age groups, with skiers Cooper M. and Evan B. taking second in theirs! Whiteface freestyle skiers Cooper R. and Clayton F. joined Coach Jackson in travelling South to Gore for the FISU World University Games to forerun the slopestyle and big air courses Athletes are looking forward to competing in the Empire State Winter Games next month!
Thank you to everyone who attended our annual Chairman’s Holiday Party on December 29, 2022, at the Mount Van Hoevenberg base lodge The sweet sounds of The McGraw Project serenaded us, we enjoyed delicious food by West Shore Barbecue, dessert from Enuf Pastry, and the Adirondack Pop Corn Store, and raised over $40,000 for Dare to Dream Scholarships It was a night to remember!
