From the Director’s Desk

It’s hard to believe that March is upon us and we ’ re charging into the final quarter of the season. The cold weather has allowed us to have some of the best training and competition conditions in recent memory and the athletes are taking full advantage of this throughout the programs and venues

Years in which the Winter Olympics take place bring an added sense of excitement to the NYSEF community We’re reminded of our rich Olympic heritage with Lake Placid hosting the 1932 and 1980 Games as well as the dozens of NYSEF alumni that have made it to this highest of international competition over several decades. This year was no different as we proudly cheered on our former athletes from afar.

While the Games were starting in Italy, NYSEF and Whiteface hosted the inaugural downhill on Thruway and Draper’s Drop as part of a fully calendared Nor-Am series. This was the first downhill event at Whiteface in over 2 decades and a huge step for ski racing development in the region and the country This special event took massive efforts and thoughtful collaboration between many people - congratulations to everyone involved for a job well done!

Later in the month, we gathered to celebrate the season with a beautiful day of skiing at Belleayre and a fun evening in Fleischmanns. Along with our development and communications director, Jamie Welsh and current board chair and Olympian Andrew Weibrecht, we had the pleasure of skiing around with groups of athletes and coaches as well as chatting with several parents We even got to roll a few nets at the end of the day!

Whether it’s the local cross country Adirondack Tour de Ski series, the Empire State Winter Games or the Hole Shot Nor-Am boarder-cross event, the Olympic spirit is present throughout our programs and communities. It’s the innate sense that all athletes have, knowing that anything is possible with hard work, grit a Following closely in the footsteps of Olympic athletes before athletes feel the magic and develop enormous respect for th journey that lies ahead

Looking forward to seeing what magic the final weeks of the Olympic season will bring us

A Day at Belleayre

NYSEF’s leadership team had a chance to ski with coaches, athletes, and meet families at Belleayre over President’s Day Weekend Since 2017 the NYSEF program at Belleayre has continued to develop, grow, and evolve Each NYSEF program embraces our core principles in athletic development and cultural values but also develops its own identity.

Seeing kids, coaches, and families fired up about skiing is what propels our program and builds the foundation for a strong future in skiing for the young athletes that participate in NYSEF programming. To start the day U14 athletes were running full length Super G on Dot Nebel, which athletes and coaches alike were psyched about

Following the Super G session, U10s and U12s were ready for a fun Pre Race Prep Race on the lower section of Dot. Program Director JJ Pavese shared the community’s excitement as he announced results for the U10 and U12 Pre Race Prep race “Every kid had fun and was excited to race today and that’s what we want to see. ” Following this as we skied around the mountain kids were out freeskiing everywhere at Belleayre demonstrating their love for skiing.

A few lucky young athletes had a chance to get some pointers on their starts from Board Chair and retired USST member, Andrew Weibrecht. All-in-all it was a wonderful opportunity to see the community forming at Belleayre and also watching skiers throughout the program starting to get results The great developmental terrain on Dot Nebel and the opportunities for NYSEF families to access winter term and also their home hill programming are ingredients for a promising future

The Return of Speed

From February 4 through February 12, Whiteface and NYSEF were showcased on the North American alpine racing stage as NYSEF and Whiteface hosted a full slate of FIS NorAm Cup races. Athletes from across the United States, Canada, and beyond descended on the Adirondacks for a week of high level competition.

The headline moment of the week was the return of downhill racing to Whiteface for the first time since 2004 Bringing the downhill discipline back to the mountain marked a significant milestone and showcased the venue ’ s capacity to host elite-level competition on demanding terrain. In a dramatic shift from the original speed venues off of Skyward and Cloudspin, the 2026 downhill track began high on Mountain Run and descended Little Whiteface. With a built up start on the exit of The Approach, which got athletes to speed by the time they entered Upper Parkway athletes were challenged immediately with technical and steep terrain on the upper pitches Racers carried speed into Lower Thruway, where terrain moderated before moving back into Draper’s Drop and finishing down the final section to finish at the bottom of Fox

In total the course delivered approximately 1,200 feet of vertical drop, blending air, gliding sections, terrain rolls, and technical turns that demanded complete focus from start to finish NYSEF head men ’ s coach Seppi Stiegler reflected on the week: “the first takeaway was the access for our skiers had to time on downhill skis and in gates. Our forerunners and racers had a whole season ’ s worth of downhill training. It was amazing to see the progression through the week.”

Stiegler, who raced in the last downhill to be hosted at Whiteface in 2004, shared that it was really amazing to see the development of a new venue on this mountain and to consider some of the changes from his experience during that series “I sat down after the series and realized I’d raced in that race in 2004 and the things I remembered were, I’d really never been on downhill skis and was racing and didn’t really know what to do, when to turn or how to manage air. I also remember the finish was up around where, I think the lift for Lookout is, and when I finished I don’t even remember anyone being there.” He continued, I finished last in that race, but it was a really humbling experience, that was good for me.

N Y S E F

Checking out results from that race a few NYSEF athletes competed in that Junior Nationals series downhill including, Robbie Miller who finished 5 , Brendan Brousseau who finished 6 , Current U10 coach Ethan Weibrecht, who finished 13 , Stephen Fiorella finished 27 and Austin Scholl finished in 45 . th th th th th

This time around, two NYSEF women Maika B and Elizabeth LG scored NorAm points recording finishes for the two days of racing of 27 and 28 and 29 and 29 respectively. Following the downhill events, the week continued with Super-G races for men and women and men ’ s tech events, Giant Slalom, and Slalom. th th th

The return of NorAm racing to Whiteface energized the local ski community and reinforced the mountain’s reputation as one of the premier venues in the East. Hosting downhill for the first time in over two decades not only highlighted the strength of the NYSEF team and mountain operations crew, but also provided developing North American athletes with a valuable opportunity to compete on a new, challenging track that both athletes and coaches are looking forward to coming back to for future events Thank you to all of our volunteers, coaches, race crew, ski patrol, and mountain ops staff that made this such an awesome success

Living the Olympic Spirit: A Chance to Meet Local Olympians

Living the Olympic Spirit: A Chance to Meet Local Olympians

Olympic Year’s always bring excitement for our community and across the country. NYSEF is fortunate to count multiple Olympians across our disciplines as alumni On February 19 , 2026 the NYSEF community and Lake Placid Community was treated to a special collection of Olympian’s that all call Lake Placid home. NYSEF’s board chair, Andrew Weibrecht was joined by former NYSEF Executive Director and current youth ski jumping Coach Jay Rand, past NYSEF board member Andrea Henkel Burke and her husband Tim Burke (current NYSEF board member) as well as Lake Placid resident Olympians Paul Wylie and Mark Grimmette th

Your paragraph text

Certainly, Lake Placid’s unique legacy adds to the spirit every four years for the Winter Olympics. The ability for the community and visitors to have a chance to socialize, meet, and hear from a group of such accomplished athletes is very special

Each athlete shared reflections on the Olympic experience and their special memories of the Games Everyone in attendance learned a little more about each member of the panel and walked away with a greater understanding of the unique nature of our community Thank you to all who attended and special thanks to Andrew and the athletes for being so generous in their support of the community and NYSEF.

Hole Shot Tour Returns to Gore

The Holeshot Cross Tour is a competition designed to bridge the gap between grassroots and World Cup level for Snowboard Cross and Ski Cross. The series also brings together athletes across the country to identify the top juniors.

N Y S E F

The Holeshot Tour events are sanctioned as both US Ski and Snowboard and FIS, and follow FIS rules and formats. Athletes 15 (SBX) and 16 (SX) and older compete together in an open-class style event. (SBX birth year 2010) (SX birth year 2009).

For full FIS results, click here.

The US Ski & Snowboard Holeshot Tour made its annual stop at Gore Mountain this past February 10-13th. For this season the Nor-am event was Snowboard only and consisted of two days of back to back Nor-am races followed by a FIS level event the following day Weather was a bit of a challenge on the first race day but improved as the week went on. The course has been built by BC based Arena Snowparks since 2021 and was arguably the best they’ve built at Gore. Overall the track consisted of 11 banked turns, several jumps, rollers, and a 50’ finish jump as well as the custom handshaped start area which is where the “hole shot” usually takes place. The term comes from motorcycle racing and refers to the one who gets to the first turn the fastest. Once you get the hole shot it’s a 4-person, 1 minute plus, drag race to the finish!

Van Dorn Recaps IBU Stretch

N Y S E F

With strong performances to start her season, NYSEF’s Abigail Van Dorn earned the opportunity to travel with USBA for a stretch of IBU Cups where she had some great breakthrough performances She took the time to share a reflection on this trip and you can read it below. Keep skiing fast! If you want to catch some high level biathlon action locally, make your way to Mount Van Hoevenberg for the IBU Cup between February 22 and March 7!

In early January, I traveled over to Madona, Latvia, and Imatra, Finland, to race in the Junior IBU Cup #3 and Junior Open European Championships. This was my first time racing internationally, and it was so awesome to experience this next level of competition while representing U.S. Biathlon!

We had a super competitive group of athletes and great coaches on this trip that contributed to an awesome team environment! Some of my favorite memories were our team debate nights, walks downtown, mealtime conversations, bowling night, waterslide racing, and always endless laughter

IOn the racing side of things, I was very happy with how my trip went! I went into these competitions without any real expectations, and secured some great results against the best Junior Biathletes in the world! Personally, I found that it was a lot easier for me to focus solely on myself during these races since I didn’t know any of the girls I was competing against, and I couldn’t understand what the announcer was saying! This helped me to focus my mindset on just doing the best I could for myself each day, and helped eliminate any excess pressures and nerves associated with racing on a bigger stage!

I also really enjoyed the opportunity to be able to watch and learn from some of the best! Even though I was only racing against athletes my age, some of them had already been on the World Cup, IBU Cup, and are representing their country at the Olympics this season! This was super eye-opening, and was a great chance for me to hop in and ski behind some super fast girls, and observe how they handled certain transitions, and their time in the range.

In addition to learning from my International competitors, it was really great to meet new people and share our different experiences I enjoyed going on runs, playing games, swimming, and talking to people from countries all over the world! It was so great to be able to connect with people who share the same love for the sport that I do, but lead much different lives!

Overall, I am so pleased that I was given the opportunity to travel and compete on this trip! I had a fantastic time and gained so many valuable experiences Next up, I am looking forward to heading back over the big pond to Arber, Germany, for the Junior World Championships in late February/early March!

Junior Race Team Recap

From Head Coach Paul Smith

For the Junior Race team this past month the story is that it has been a winter of 'plenty'. The team has had a steady diet of competitions without much break, of course lots of race wins and podiums, and there is enough snow to ski every trail that can be groomed and then some

N Y S E F

In team sports, particularly American Football there is a tradition of the coach at the end of the game in the locker room handing out a used ball as a trophy of sorts The ritual is meant to capitalize on the high morale within the team and raise it even higher. The recipient is not necessarily the most valuable player of the game or the one that racked up the best statistics. Sometimes this individual was a silent leader by example, or this person had the glue effect to bring a group of others along with them My two "game-ball" performances of the month go to JRT skiers Pepper Larson and Liam Stoddard. Each has been skiing well all season but the weekend of February 7th in Craftsbury they both entered and competed in their first Eastern Cup Race Series and placed in the top 10 in each of their respective races These were great performances made greater by the fact they clearly went in without fear of the competition and tried to ski as fast as they could.

This attitude has a big effect on the rest of our team just as American cross country ski hero and Vermonter Ben Ogden has that effect on the ski community in the United States as a whole Ben showed us with his silver medal in the Olympics that it is okay to, without fear of the result, try and go toe to toe with the greatest skier of all time, the effect that this methodical aggression has on the rest of us that he displayed cannot be overstated

The other story for the Junior Race Team has been; "learning by doing" We are fortunate right now that we have every kilometer of every trail groomed at Mt Van Hoevenberg So many days we spend repeating sections of trail while the coach is right there directing, and athletes attempt to achieve mastery of all tactical and technical skills in our sport. Lately, the workout of the day has been to go ski the longest loop and the furthest trail The goal here is not to overthink what we are trying to accomplish but to just ski Be relaxed, and take in the amusement of skiing the legacy trails. Russian hill, Cascade loop, Porter Mtn. You realize Morton and the rest of the trail designers were maybe drinking too much maple syrup when they made these trails but they are fun when we have as much snow as we do now

Right now for the Junior Race Team, we keep skiing the long trails. In a couple weeks we sharpen things to prepare for our final championship races of the season.

Winter Winter

From the classroom to the slopes NYSEF Winter Term offers a unique experience for developing athletes to continue their schooling while experiencing what it is like to be a full-time athlete on snow “It’s all about creating the right mix of support, immersion, and training.” Shares NYSEF Winter Term Director, Beatty Schluetter. She continued, “Our team of tutors, coaches, and dorm staff is all in during the season to make sure each athlete gets the most out of their time at Winter Term.”

Starting in 2014, Winter Term has grown to average 36-38 athletes annually. Athletes have flexible options to choose from in terms of how long they stay and how it works with their local school districts We strive to offer flexibility to families so they can learn what’s best for their athlete moving forward. Athletes from all over New England and beyond have joined winter term in the nordic disciplines because of the unique ability to access venues and coaching while remaining in their home school district.
