he rapid rise of digital technology in the 21st century has changed the world of cosmetics and beauty, uncovering new tools, new connections, and interactions through social media. It has increased the convergence of industries and continues to build on the desire for an integrative aesthetic experience by the consumer. The beauty industry is reacting quickly—Sephora has been hanging ‘magic mirrors’ on their walls and L’Oréal can be a quick search on Snapchat these days—though this is just the beginning of a (Continued on page 4)

ummer went by way too fast. Attending Cosmoprof Las Vegas, visiting customers, and spending a day at the Intermountain SCC event in the Rocky Mountains may have helped to force the season through for me. I hope you all enjoyed some time off and are now ready to move into the Fall with still more exciting events from the chapter! At NYSCC, it seems that no one ever rests! The level of dedication is infectious and because of our enthusiastic volunteers, we are fully engaged in ensuring the sustainability of our chapter. The last part of the year will bring exciting events to close out the 2017 educational program, and provide plenty of networking and fundraising activities. 1. #BeyondTheBrief is a social and educational event where the worlds of beauty, fashion, color, and science converge. Chaired by Eileen Kim of Chanel USA, and her team, Lara Ahad, Sophia Chen, Ingrid Chirico, Andrea Gafford, and Yana Melnikova, this program promises to be an event unlike any other! Space is limited, I hope you are already registered. See you on September 6th at Peclers Paris HQ in New York. 2. The evening of September 6th, members will be transported to the Midtown Loft and Terrace to enjoy a cocktail hour on the roof top. Danielle Dewolf and Amy Marshall have planned a culinary lesson in alignment with the NYSCC sustainability theme of the year. This year’s Culinary Event is already sold out! 3. Innovation in Textured Hair Care, chaired by Amber Evans, Ph.D. of BASF, will take place on October 12th at the Chart House in Weehawken, NJ. As consumers are interested in addressing their hair care needs based on their unique hair texture or curl pattern as opposed to their ethnicity, the NYSCC brings in the experts for a day of education on this current market trend. At the October 12th event, the entire board and committee members will be recognized for their tremendous energy devoted to the advancement of the chapter’s mission of education. We tip our hats to our volunteers. We also wish to show appreciation to our sponsors on that day. Please join us if you have sponsored any of our events during the 2017 education program. In addition, we will be raffling two Hudson River dinner cruise gift certificates (value of $250 each) at the October 12th event. Be there to be a winner! Besides our own Chapter events, the NYSCC is also expanding its educational reach by sponsoring key SCC events in Florida, California, and the annual scientific event in New York City. Please see this issue of Cosmetiscope for more information on this new initiative that will not only benefit the NYSCC, but all chapters and the entire industry! On a more somber note, the people of the great state of Texas who have been afflicted by this unprecedented natural disaster are in our hearts and prayers. Please consider donating to a charity of choice to help the people of Texas impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Finally, to close out this year of tremendous growth and change for the NYSCC, you will be treated to a spectacular charity event, -NYSCC for Education”, to be held in New York on December 11, 2017. I encourage you to read next month’s Cosmetiscope and to check out the website event page as well as your social media feeds for more information on what we are planning just for you!

Innovation in Textured Hair Care
October 12, 2017 • 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Chart House, Weehawken, NJ
T
extured hair is hair that is naturally wavy, curly, or coily rather than straight. Over half of the world’s population has textured hair, and consumers are interested in addressing their hair care needs based on their hair texture or curl pattern and style goal as opposed to their ethnicity. Textured hair types have received increasingly more attention in recent times with companies and stores delivering more product lines and campaigns dedicated to wavy, curly, and coily-haired consumers. This program features a diverse lineup of scientists, media influencers, and a stylist who will educate the audience on the characteristics of textured hair types as well as the habits and practices of consumers with textured hair, some of the key drivers of the growth of this segment, and recent advancements in the study of textured hair. Attendees will be entered into a raffle for dinner cruises, museum tickets, and books.

paradigm shift. A new consumer is on the rise, driving these changes—the millennial, a group that has grown up in the digital age, swayed by these innovations, interactions, and personalized experiences. Thus, embracing digital beauty and embodying these innovations is the key to the millennial market. Companies have strived to do so by taking advantage of digital technology, experimenting with concepts like skin analysis, magic mirrors, and try-on tech to creating new color combinations, unique scents, and sensorial experiences. This breakthrough has led to the prevalence of web and mobile applications, kiosks, and novel physical retail spaces. Behind the scenes, scientists are conducting extensive research to push the boundaries of cosmetic science, resulting in the recent development of UV-measuring skin patches, and even Hewlett Packard contributing their knowledge of pigment science within the color cosmetics category, to ultimately satisfy the modern day consumer. Latest observations entail the evolution of consumers’ desire to purchase an ‘experience’, not just a product. But what does that mean? Industry leaders have interpreted that the ‘experience’ sought by digital age millennials can be provided by the current integrative convergence of industries that appeal to them, such as beauty, fashion, art, and technology. #BeyondTheBrief—a social and educational event where the worlds of beauty, fashion, color, and science converge in September—will feature inspiring talks by leaders and influencers in fashion, beauty, and technology, as well as interactive experiences showcasing textures, colors, and technologies. For attendees, it will be an opportunity to advance the understanding of the shifts in the cosmetic industry, through the lenses of technology and design. On September 6th, the NYSCC along with Peclers Paris will host this event in New York City, providing a modern venue with a rooftop overlooking Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. #BeyondTheBrief will begin at 11:00 a.m., kicking off the day with an hour of brunch, followed by the main event of speakers, panel discussions, and experiential rooms, and concluding with a cocktail hour from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., where one can enjoy a signature cocktail and unwind for the day with new friends in an enjoyable and relaxed setting. The highlights of the event will include speakers, discussions, and Experiential Rooms, where one can assimilate knowledge about digital beauty and indulge in creativity through interactive sensory showcases. Attendees will become familiar with the latest in digital beauty technology and comprehend how new tools are being used to market cosmetics, as well as provide the consumer an experience that is more personalized and appealing to all senses. For example, in the Perfect365 Room, one can use an iPad to select a personalized ‘look’ for the day on a magic mirror and a makeup artist will be ready to bring the look to life—another digitally enhanced experience fit for the consumer. In the gallery of rooms, one will be immersed in a world of color, beauty, art, design, and technology as they explore, touch, feel, and interact. Take the opportunity to listen to presentations by inspiring speakers. Emma Fric, Research and Future Insights Director at Peclers Paris, will discuss macro trends in the evolving cosmetic industry. Also from Peclers Paris, Dominique Assénat, Head of Colors, Beauty, and Accessories, will be speaking on color and creative sensorial territories. The Perfect365 team will be holding a panel discussion on digital beauty integration. Engage in a discussion among experts in art, architecture, fashion, raw materials and color. Come, explore, be creative, and learn what an ‘experience’ can be and how to think Beyond The Brief!

“We were very happy with our booth at the Javits Center as well as the customer service. The traffic on Tuesday was great and we saw people from all over the country in attendance. We are sticking with Suppliers’ Day in 2018 as our New York event, and have reserved the same booth space.” – Chris Minihan, Operations Manager, Greentech “Suppliers’ Day 2017 was much more organized then past shows. The Javits Center is a better venue and atmosphere.” – Chris Walling, Vertellus
“Suppliers’ Day 2017 was excellent and the traffic on Tuesday was overwhelming. We met with everyone we wanted to see. It was fun as well as a good networking event; we set up some meetings during the night.” – Brittany Klimstra, Key Account Manager, Oleon “This year’s event was much better than last year and we have stacks of leads. he daughter of an interior designer and an art historian whose career revolved around luxury, first at Vuitton and then at the Comité Colbert, Emma Fric is an expert in bringing together diverse environments as her professional career demonstrates. After her initial training in law, motivated by her interest in understanding the rules that govern societies, Emma discovered, when studying at CELSA, communication techniques and semiotics, the later becoming her true passion. In 2000, she looked to regain her independence and worked as a freelancer for BAT and Diageo. Two years later, back in France, she demonstrated her talents as Strategic Planning Manager at Brand DNA up to 2006 (Agnès b, Comité Colbert, Philip Morris, Rémy Martin, Apsys, the Diamond Trading Company, and Escada). From 2006 to 2017 she returned to freelancing for Omega, BAT, and Beauté Prestige International in Europe and the U.S. Emma became a member of the Peclers Paris team in 2007, first as Development and Client Strategy Manager, then as head of the Department of Research and Future Insight. Digital Beauty Integration: The New Challenge for Beauty Brands 2.0 – Perfect365 Team
W
ith 90 percent of consumers’ mobile time being spent in apps, and 26% of beauty and apparel searches originating within mobile apps, it is no wonder retail brands are turning to apps to increase their reach and deepen their engagement with consumers. Augmented Reality is one technology that offers a new way for retail brands to connect with consumers, particularly in the beauty industry. Brands like Sephora, Sally Hansen, and Benefit are using augmented reality and specific technologies, such as face detection, to allow users to try on and buy products virtually, without ever having to apply them to the face. In addition, beauty brands are leveraging this brand new interactive channel to engage with and reach consumers more efficiently and better understand their behaviors. For consumers, augmented reality means the added convenience of being able to learn about and access new products and try on digital looks within minutes, whether it’s at the beauty counter or on their smartphone. Beauty brands and retail stores have taken augmented reality from an innovative idea to an effective marketing tool by harnessing its ability to drive engagement and trial. Creating products that are optimized for digital replication will become the new Beauty 2.0 challenge. In this presentation, Vince Hsu, Director of Business Development for Perfect365, a digital makeup app with over 100 million users, will discuss the new possibilities that augmented reality-based beauty apps create for beauty brands online and retail beauty counters, and how they can avoid “missing the boat” by rethinking digital beauty integration, particularly with the rise in millennial buying power. Following the presentation from Vincent Hsu, a panel made up of a beauty brand, makeup artists, and the Perfect365 Beauty Squad will dive deeper into the following: • The use of technology as a platform in Beauty and Fashion: Augmented Reality, Face Detection, and other technologies to achieve its positive makeup results. • How Perfect365 collaborates with makeup artists and brands to interpret their concept of beauty and (Continued on page 8) apply it in the app. V O L U M E

She returned to Paris in the early 1980s to expand her leather goods collection, which is sold at Kashiyama, Victoire, etc. Looking for new experiences that involved teamwork and sharing expertise, she decided to work for a key designer of the period, Anne-Marie Beretta, where she refined her love of fabrics and colors. Recruited in 1987 by the Fashion Director at that time, Dominique began working for Peclers Paris as the head of the Textile and Accessories department. She spent many years providing her prospective insight to the agency’s two main departments: Colors and Fabrics. Now in charge of the Colors, Beauty, and Accessories Department, Dominique also heads one of the Peclers Paris fundamentals: The Colors Trend Book. Her creative vision is essential to this task, which involves the fine-tuning of 45 exclusive, specially crafted colors, with her team, every season, laying the foundations for all the agency’s publications. Her broad vision across all markets and uncanny ability for abstraction have made her a shrewd observer of the evolution of international markets and how they interact (the emergence of Asian markets and strong demand for color from China have had a major influence on European and American designers). _____________________________________________

Siegel
Edward Siegel AIA, LEED AP is the principal of Edward Siegel Architect (ESA), an architectural design firm that specializes in luxury residential, resort, and specialty buildings. ESA was founded on the premise that the most beautiful and memorable places are the ones in which the architecture, interiors, and landscape seamlessly interconnect into a unified work of art. The firm recently completed an eleven thousand square foot contemporary Palladian-style vacation villa at the Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club in the Bahamas, and the gut renovation of an eight thousand square foot duplex penthouse in Tribeca, New York, NY. A portfolio of ESA’s work Photograph by can be found at www.edwardsiegelarchitects.com. Philip Euling Prior to founding his own firm, Siegel was a design partner at Cooper Robertson. His notable projects include the New Albany Bath & Tennis Club in New Albany, OH; the Robins Visitors Center at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA; the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church’s Parish House in the Historic Village District of East Hampton, NY; the Carlyle Residences in Celebration, FL; a thirty-five thousand square foot recreational facility for a private estate in Bedford, NY; and numerous private residential projects in New York City, the Hamptons, Northern Westchester, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. His design leadership for a Greek Revival farmhouse in Upper Westchester County, NY and two Soho Loft renovations in New York City helped Cooper Robertson earn the honor of being named to Architectural Digest’s prestigious “AD100, The World’s Top Talents in Architecture and Interior Design” since its inception through 2015 and to Luxe Interiors & Design magazine’s “2016 Gold List.” Siegel graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. While there the faculty awarded him a National Endowment for the Arts grant for producing his fifth-year thesis. He was one of the founders of the Cornell Journal of Architecture and co-edited the second issue on Urban Design. While working at SOM and Ennead Architects (formerly the Polshek Partnership) in New York City from 1983 through 1988, Siegel’s freelance team received a Commendation for Design Excellence for their campus master plan design for the Jacob’s Pillow Design Competition. Siegel is an active member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and has been co-chair of the AIA New York Chapter’s Interiors Committee since November 2011. He has also served on the Advisory Board of CUNY’s Department of Architectural Technology and has served on numerous academic and competition design juries. Broussard – Designer, Luxury Accessory Products and Packaging
Diana Broussard designed the dbCHRONICLETM TechLUXE Series of handbags and accessories. Below is an excerpt from an interview with Diana Broussard by Chander Chawla of Forbes/Tech. “I am excited to introduce the first wave of TechLUXE in the form of a resin handbag with an LCD video screen. The idea is to radically bring technology to fashion, but with creative beauty within a functional beautifully designed bag. There is a rise of video creation and consumption. This design adds a new dimension to selfexpression by introducing motion to fashion with videos. The handbag is made of my signature resin (plexiglass) with an LCD screen that plays either the downloaded Diana Broussard (db) aspirational video or two additional videos of the consumer’s choice to personalize the bag to coordinate with her outfit, or mood, or to the event she will be attending.” n Edward

Siegel Architect – Edward Siegel AIA, Leed AP
Edward Siegel Architect (ESA) is a professional design firm founded on the premise that the most beautiful and memorable places are the ones in which the architecture, interiors, and landscape seamlessly interconnect into a unified work of art. It is a holistic design approach which goes further to combine context, local climate, the culture of the place, and most importantly, our client’s requirements, into projects of long lasting value.
Photograph by Peter Murdock
We pride ourselves on our listening skills and collaborative approach, and truly believe that the best projects are the ones in which the client and architect work hand in hand throughout the project. While ESA typically leads the design work, we also work in close collaboration with Photograph by Peter Murdock the finest landscape designers, engineers, decorators, artisans, lighting designers, and audio/video consultants to turn our client’s wishes into sophisticated one-of-a-kind environments. Having successfully completed projects in historical enclaves, seaside towns, and urban centers, we have significant experience detailing our projects with current tried and true sustainable and resilient technologies, and believe that the true test of a successful project is when it looks as good in thirty years as it does on “move-in” day. Nearly 78% of millennials say they are more inclined to buy makeup if they could first see it, virtually, on their face. Beauty is now back in the hands of the beholder to experiment and engage with the brands and products they have come to love. Experience digital beauty first hand with the digital beauty app used by 100 million worldwide, Perfect365. augmented reality mirror. In collaboration with Presperse, you can try their products on digitally and then have the look recreated in real-life by Perfect365’s Explorer community artist, Alexis Blackmon. n Presperse
Presperse is very excited to participate in #BeyondTheBrief to showcase their Arcopearl, effect pigment technology that brilliantly executes the “Optical Wow” trend we see across the personal care industry. Color and special effects are key drivers emerging from many industries, but especially fashion. Optics play a significant role in the purchase decision process, especially in the color cosmetics segment. Younger women are more confident experimenting with bold looks. Using effect pigment technology, one can create soft highlights and glow, as well as bold, striking color intensity. Color is a factor in all applications and segments, but shade and special effects play a big role in purchase decision in color cosmetics, as noted in some of the 2016 consumer statistics shared by Mintel. • 58% of UK face make-up buyers are influenced by the color/shade when purchasing. • 25% of nail polish users in the U.S. use a special effect polish. • 30% of 16-24-year-old Italian make-up users are confident experimenting with bright/bold looks. In 2017, the latest trends of beauty bloggers and fashion-forward consumers play with holographic highlighters, out-of-this world colors, and magically inspired beauty tools. Unicorns, mermaids, and fantasy movies are all sources of inspiration. The younger generation is more adventurous with their make-up style and millennials drive the mythical inspiration trend. The contouring trend has given way to focus on highlighting the face. This is a more modern and gentler approach to defining the face. New colors and holographic finishes are popular in the highlighting segment. Primers are moving toward luminous and holographic tones and all of the looks can be delivered using Presperse’s new Arcopearl technology. The Arcopearl line, only available through Presperse, features both synthetic and natural mica interference effect pigments. There are three grades of Arcopearl using different substrates and treatments to deliver the color travel effect. The newest generation of synthetic mica flakes, Arcopearl FEHD, utilizes a unique patented technology designed to coat synthetic mica in a novel way. Unlike traditional layered pigments, Arcopearl FEHD uses synthetic mica coated by iron oxide and then titanium dioxide to create a layered pearl pigment. This new layering process creates outstanding visual and sparkle effects that offer exceptional brightness, intense chroma, and superior sensory benefits, unlike traditional pigments. In addition to clear demonstrated performance, the sensory experience is second to none! To experience the special effects of Arcopearl, please join us at #BeyondTheBrief and see for yourself how effect pigments impact our experience in beauty!
