The Skin’s Microbiome

O

ver the last several years, there has been increasing interest in better understanding the skin’s microbiome. Essentially, the microbiota of skin encompasses the microbial species that inhabit the skin, helping it to ward off foreign pathogens. A number of key activities occur in the microbiome of skin including biofilm formation and quorum sensing. The microbiome of skin serves a vital function in the skin’s innate immune system. Researchers in academia and industry alike have sought to determine the composition and behavior of the skin’s microbiome. A great deal of research investigating the skin’s microbiome is underway, including efforts to understand its fundamental nature, the effect of topical treatments, and the influence of environmental factors. The NYSCC will host a symposium on the skin microbiome on Tuesday, June 4th at the Chart House

in Weehawken, New Jersey. Some of the topics to be discussed include topical product development and its effect on the skin’s microbiome; the antimicrobial properties of skin lipids and their influence on the microbiome; the microbiome of normal, dry, and sensitive skin; the beneficial and detrimental roles of certain bacterial species in skin health; the role of the skin’s microbiome in odor biochemistry of the axillae region; and the development of new products aimed at improving the microbiome. Join us for an intellectually stimulating day to learn more about this increasingly important subject.
