he Evolution of Beauty experience is almost here, with the 40th Anniversary of Suppliers’ Day right around the corner, May 7th-8th at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Ruby is the gem for this milestone, known for its captivating beauty and positive energy. It is an appropriate emblem as the NYSCC brings the industry together for an enriching, experiential event filled with innovation, education, business building, and fun.

This year we raised the bar at Suppliers’ Day by adding new elements, expanding our industry partnerships, and engaging outside perspectives from companies like Google and Spate to create an immersive and relevant experience that delivers unmatched insight and showcases innovation.

The show’s theme, The Evolution of Beauty, will be witnessed and discovered throughout the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The event begins with our ribbon-cutting ceremony that will open Suppliers’ Day with NYSCC leaders, iconic brands, association partners, and suppliers welcoming you with a few added elements of surprise.

The Evolution of Beauty Retrospective will take you back in time and then into the world of tomorrow! Situated between Halls C and D this visual journey will take attendees and long-time NYSCC members down memory lane. This retrospective will connect you to the debut of The Chemists’ Classroom, a new exhibit hall that expands the show’s footprint.

It not only features more suppliers, but also education, future innovations, and trends including the Innovation Hub, Innovation and Presentation Theaters, and popular student forum, Future Chemists Workshop.

Once you have journeyed through The Evolution of Beauty Retrospective, you will be immersed into “Tomorrowland” with almost 100,000 net square feet of contiguous exposition space filled with the best and most comprehensive products, solutions, and services available in formulations and product development.

We are also excited to be offering new educational programming focused on Fragrance: The Invisible Art, Microbiome: Inside Out Beauty, and Innovation & Compliance: Regulation, Safety, and Quality Assurance.

Future Chemists Workshop

T

he much-in-demand Future Chemists Workshop is back and becoming a national event, attracting chapter participation across the country! Designed for student innovators and leaders of tomorrow, this results-oriented challenge, instituted by the NYSCC, will give invited university students insight on how to be a cosmetic chemist through a tutorial and practical workshop. This workshop, led by a team captain, takes place on Tuesday, May 7th. Selected students from New York area schools such as Rutgers University, Fashion Institute of Technology, Montclair State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Kean University, and Long Island University are invited to participate along with the colleges and universities represented by the students from the participating SCC Chapters. The Future Chemists Workshop is located in Hall D – The Chemists’ Classroom.

W

hen traveling to the world’s busiest convention center, it is good to have options. Within New York City, public transportation is always a quick and affordable way to go—and the new 7 Subway Extension across the street from the Javits Center makes the trip even more convenient.

If you are coming by car or truck, virtually all roads lead to the Javits Center. Plus, there is plenty of offsite parking within walking distance of the iconic facility. And, if you are looking to burn some calories while blazing a trail to our front door, take advantage of Citi Bike, New York’s bike sharing system. The New York Waterway is also a convenient and quick way to get to the Javits Center from across the Hudson River, and only one block from the convention center.

he Cosmetiscope editorial committee invites all interested parties to submit feature technical articles for publication in the NYSCC monthly newsletter.

Authors of feature articles are eligible to win the prestigous NYSCC Literature Award ($1,000) for the best front-page article published during the calendar year.

Authors also receive $200 reimbursement to attend a theatrical performance of their choice. Writing an article for your peers is a very rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and will ensure your place in NYSCC history. You may choose whatever topic you feel would be interesting to fellow colleagues in our industry.

We also welcome any other types of commentaries or articles that may be published in the Career Corner, Technical Tidbit section, or as a Letter to the Editor.

T

his course offers a detailed look into the roles that plant-based lipids play in personal care and cosmetic formulations. Particular focus will be placed on how the structure of fatty acids found in plant-based lipids, and more importantly the triglycerides and wax esters that contain them, determine the interdependent properties of oxidative stability, compatibility, solid fat content, and crystallization types of various oils, fats, and waxes. Furthermore, we will examine how these properties can inform our choices of oils, fats, waxes, and their derivatives within different personal care and cosmetic products, including anhydrous and emulsion-based products. Finally, we will review some of the scientific literature describing the potential therapeutic benefits of different components of plant-based oils and fats.
