ell, the momentum continues to build! In less than two, weeks Suppliers’ Day, the anchor of “Beauty Week NYC,” will open its doors at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. We are excited to be back at this venue and this dynamic city that is the ideal backdrop to bring this year’s theme “The Art & Science of Formulation” to life.

We worked hard this year at forming new partnerships with some of the top industry associations—IFSCC, CEW, ICMAD, and PCPC—as well as with PeclersParis, a global trend forecaster, and expanding our involvement with the trade media. These new collaborations have deepened our educational offerings this year as well as increased our promotional reach. There is also add-on education with the co-located HAPPI AntiAging Conference, PeclersParis “Where Culture Meets Science” breakfast, and the ICMAD FDA Cosmetics Regulations Workshop.

In addition, we are having a “MEMBER – BRING A NEW MEMBER” breakfast on May 16th. Details to come, however, the plan is to engage our members to help us spread the word of the countless benefits afforded with membership. The new members will then be present at Suppliers’ Day and feel the energy and excitement that this organization brings to cosmetic chemistry.

Watch out for specifics, but in the meantime please block your calendar for 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Help us increase our membership, which will inevitably, increase the overall organization’s value proposition!

While Suppliers’ Day will just about have it all, there will be opportunities for education and networking as we lead in to summer (And hopefully, lose all signs of winter coats!). On June 5th, our program on the microbiome will take place at L’Oréal USA in Clark, New Jersey. The program features a presentation by Dr. Magali Moreau, Principal Scientist in Open Innovation at L’Oréal USA who will discuss “Human Skin Microbiome: An Introduction and Opportunities for Healthy Skin Aging.” Joining her will be Denis Wahler from Givaudan to round-out this timely topic. And, of course, our summertime programming would not be complete without the Annual NYSCC Golf Outing, scheduled for Monday, July 23rd; always a great networking experience. We hope to see you there!

We are almost half-way through 2018 and I could not be happier with the programming and participation that continues to allow the New York Chapter to set the bar on its mission to educate the industry. Let’s keep it going!

hen traveling to the world’s busiest convention center, it is good to have options. Within New York City, public transportation is always a quick and affordable way to go—and the new 7 Subway Extension across the street from the Javits Center makes the trip even more convenient.

If you are coming by car or truck, virtually all roads lead to the Javits Center. Plus, there is plenty of offsite parking within walking distance of the iconic facility. ick-off your Suppliers’ Day experience with the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on May 15th. This year’s ceremony activates the show’s theme, The Art and Science of Formulation, with representatives from some of the most innovative art and science institutions in New York City. s part of Beauty Week, the National SCC is offering three SCC CEP courses on May 14, 2018. These courses will be offered at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center the day before Suppliers’ Day in the Level 1 Meeting Rooms.

Fundamentals of Using Colorants – Kelly A. Dobos (Sun Chemical Corporation)

The incorporation of color in cosmetic and personal care products is part art and part science. What seems like a simple and fun exercise in pigment blending is reliant on a complex set of decisions. Factors such as the regulatory environment, cost, and stability as well as physical and chemical properties of each colorant all play an essential role in determining success in product development. This course will cover numerous topics including color theory, the regulatory environment and color quality control.

Speaking the Language – Basics in Scientific Terminology for the Cosmetics Industry – Nava Dayan, Ph.D. (Dr. Nava Dayan L.L.C.) This CEP course is aimed at providing key fundamental knowledge of scientific terms used in our industry. It will cover: definition of key words, skin structure and function, major cells and components, structure of genes, meaning of expression, and the definition and role of cytokines, enzymes and receptors.

A special focus will be provided to skin aging as well as “omics” technologies, such as genomics, proteomics, lipidomics, and the skin microbiome.

Scale Up and Processing Cosmetic Formulations – David Yacko (formerly with Estée Lauder Companies) In the cosmetic industry it is imperative that new products get from the bench to manufacturing as quickly as possible. This is the job of the Process Development Engineer and the process is called scale up.

In this course, we will discuss the different aspects of scale up: heat transfer, addition rates, and energy input as it pertains to batch size and different equipment.

he Cosmetiscope editorial committee invites all interested parties to submit feature technical articles for publication in the NYSCC monthly newsletter. Authors of feature articles are eligible to win the prestigous NYSCC Literature Award ($1,000) for the best front-page article published during the calendar year. Also, authors receive $200 reimbursement to attend a theatrical performance of their choice.

Writing an article for your peers is a very rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and would reserve your place in NYSCC history. You may choose whatever topic you feel would be interesting to fellow colleagues in our industry. We also welcome any other types of commentaries or articles that may be published in the Career Corner, Technical Tidbit section, or as a Letter to the Editor.

Human Skin Microbiome: An Introduction and Opportunities for Healthy Skin Aging – Magali Moreau, Ph.D.

S

kin surface microbes are essential partners of healthy skin. And despite the fact that we all carry a unique skin microbiota, several studies have revealed that a healthy skin microbiome is primarily determined by skin micro-biotopes that include sebaceous, moist, and dry environments.1 Dysregulation has been linked to various skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne, and dandruff.2,3 Skin aging is characterized by a decrease in sweat, sebum, and immune functions, thus resulting in significant alterations in skin surface physiology including pH and lipid composition. These physiological changes provide potential alterations in the skin ecology that may affect the skin microbiome. In a collaborative effort with the University of Tokyo, we characterized an aged-associated dysbiosis in the skin microbiome of woman. Our data revealed a higher number of species in older skin than younger skin. This diversification of older women’s skin microbiota uncovered an unexpected species more frequently associated with the oral cavity, which was significantly overrepresented in the older group.4 At present, the biological role of these oral bacteria colonizing the skin is largely unknown. However, it is intriguing that their prevalence in the skin bacteriome has been recently reported as a signature of atopic dermatitis. In parallel, the data showed that the most predominant genus, Cutibacterium (formerly called Propionibacterium), was less represented in the older group and correlated with sebum level. Cutibacterium is an important commensal organism of the skin, which is expected to benefit the host.5 A depletion of Cutibacterium may reduce these skin benefits and thus contribute to clinical/physiological signs of skin aging. These recent data open new opportunities in diagnostic and preservation of skin health during aging.

Magali Moreau, Ph.D.

Currently a Principal Scientist in Open Innovation at L’Oréal, Magali scouts and establishes external partnerships with academia, CROs, and start-ups to bring new knowledge, methods, and technologies in skin and hair. Her major focus is on the microbiome and biotech technologies for skin and hair care applications.

Magali completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University Paris, where she studied enzymatic mechanisms of human nitric oxide synthase. She completed post-doctoral fellowships at Boyce Thompson Institute with Daniel Klessig and Cornell University with Brian Crane.

She has research interests in plant pathogen interactions (plant defense-associated molecules like nitric oxide and salicylic acid), screening of plant protein microarrays to find new receptors of salicylic acid in plants and human, and structure function relationships in novel nitric oxide synthases in cyanobacteria. _____________________________________________

Denis Wahler, Ph.D.

An experienced manager for collaborative research and development, Denis is in charge of Technology Partnerships within the Active Beauty business unit of Givaudan. Prior to this role, he was Business Development Manager in Biocatalysis and Metagenomics at Libragen, before the acquisition of the company by Givaudan in 2015. LibraGen has since become the Applied Microbiomics Centre of Excellence of Givaudan Active Beauty.

Denis also worked in applied research and contract services in White Biotechnology and Green Chemistry at Proteus/PCAS Biosolution, where he served as Head of R&D and Scientific Manager for many years. Prior to joining Libragen, he also spent over a year at SEPPIC (Air Liquide Group) as Head of the Synthesis Department. Denis graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bern in Switzerland.
