Summer Fun in Simpler Times

Thinking back to my childhood and the excitement of the last day of school in June and the arrival of summer was right up there with waiting for Santa’s arrival! When school ended, there were no schedules or daily routines that had to be followed or homework to tackle each evening. We were free to be outside all day playing with friends or waiting for some fun trip planned by my parents. At least two or three times a week my mother and aunt took us and my cousins to the beach. Blankets were packed, sandwiches made and needed for our beach excursion. For at home snacks mom sometimes made ice pops from Tupperware. We thought it was amazing that we were allowed to have an ICE POP as early as 10 am on a hot summer day. Who knew in frozen form? Remember Jiffy Pop popcorn that was cooked at home? It was a treat to watch the small pan enlarge as mom held the handle, moving it back and forth we could watch it rise. When the aluminum foil top was blown up to full size and the popping sound ceased, it was ready. This product was more expensive than what we normally made, which was putting oil and corn kernels in a covered pot and shaking it stovetop, too. On rainy days when we couldn’t go outside, my dad took out the card table and put it in the a huge blanket over it and we had our own “fort” or tent to hide in, imitating our favorite program Rin TinTin or other westerns we liked. Sometimes we’d invite a few friends over to play board games, pulling out one from a closet full of choices. There was Chutes and hide and seek, or potsey, which was similar to hop scotch. Both hopscotch and potsey are played on a sidewalk chalked grid of alternating one and two squares. We had two bobby pins interlocking as our markers that would be thrown down onto the next number we had to hop to and pick up. This old New York City street name probably began with using a small “potsherd” as a marker. First recorded in ancient times, illustrations depicted children playing with broken pieces, or “shards” of old pottery as a marker. The name evolved into calling the game itself “potsey”. Childhood summers used to be simpler “back in the day” yet the memories are still some of the best of a lifetime.

Ladders, Go to the Head of the Class, Candyland and of course Monopoly. Other old standbys were Tiddlywinks, Pick-up Sticks, Mr. Potato Head and Cootie, one of my favorites. When the sun returned we ran around outside constantly.
