Emergency Home Evacuation Prep
By Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
It is impossible to image the heartache, suffering and turmoil that the severe weather systems have caused thousands of home owners across the United States. Over the last few months constant TV reports show what the citizens of these states are dealing with and we feel saddened at their plight. Extreme weather forces can happen year round. Our New York suburb rarely gets anything as severe but we could have a power outage that lasts a number of days. How many of us are ready and prepared to survive for days without heat, light or water or be ready to leave home on short notice?

Supplies
If a family were to stay in their home for several days, think about the minimal supplies you would need, should there be no electricity or heat. If your home heat source and the family could “camp out” in the room with this heat. Food preparation would have to be easier if your range is electric and inoperable. We are fortunate to have a gas stove and when an occasional outage occurs, I can cook and we eat by candlelight until the power returns. Homeowners with an electric range should keep on hand food supplies that can be eaten and vegetables, crackers and even some cheeses last a while without refrigeration. Naturally, when electricity is out, everything in the freezer and refrigerator spoils. Bottled water should be kept on hand, stored in a cool place for when it is needed. Check the expiration dates frequently, using the water you have stocked up and then buy a new and a battery powered radio and stock fresh batteries to have on hand so they work. Make sure you have an updated and well-stocked have a baby, keep extra disposable diapers, wipes, and formula on hand with these other storage items. Lastly, make copies of all important papers and pack them in a waterproof bag and put them inside a backpack security card, any vital insurance papers and important telephone numbers or addresses. In case you had to visit a hospital, doctor, or put in a claim for home or automobile damage, it will be easier to process your application if you can show proof of insurance coverage. In extreme cases, the evacuating homeowner might need to take along the deed to their house, condo, will, car titles or other papers they deem to be the most important to them.
