Serving Healthy Super Bowl Snacks

February 13 is a big day for football fans as it is the date for this year’s Super Bowl LVII (57). Some parties and gatherings for eating delicious snacks foods are held on this day and something fans and non fans alike forward to these get togethers. Naturally the half time show, featuring big name performers was usually enjoyed by all the guests. That was also when the food is being served. For readers planning a party on this day, here are tips from the American Heart Association (AHA) for healthier ideas with a few simple swaps that prevent calories from piling up. This is vital because more than 60% of American adults are overweight or obese. Poor lifestyle choices today are setting the stage for heart disease, stroke and to increase your fruit and veggie intake on game-day and every day.

Set up your party buffet with cut-up veggies, and low-fat dips made with low-fat sour cream or yogurt, or fruit and vegetable salsas. Use healthy appetizers that are fruit and vegetable based throughout your offerings. Place the healthy food items in fun bowls or martini glasses all around your party area. Have small sized plates for your guests to avoid piling up on food and calories. Try of a deck of cards. Think about turkey, veggie or salmon burgers on whole grain buns or just serve on top of a salad or quinoa for a novel change. Instead of fried chicken wings packed with fat, swap with baked chicken breast strips dipped in Buffalo sauce. Salads can be topped with the tangy chicken, shredded carrots and chopped crunchy celery with less fat. Make chicken chili or toss boneless/ skinless chicken breasts and a low sodium barbeque sauce in the slow cooker for easy pull-apart mini-sliders on whole grain buns. If pizza is on your menu, use whole wheat pizza, topped with mostly veggies and go light on the cheese. Create a Mediterranean platter with hummus, grape tomatoes, orange bell peppers, cucumbers, roasted zucchini and eggplant, and whole wheat pita chips for a tasty and healthy game snack? Perhaps serve a healthy guacamole with baked whole grain chips or veggies instead of salty/fatty chips or atop veggie burritos on soft, whole grain tortillas. Desserts can be a fruit salad or kebobs, individual fruit and yogurt parfaits, or dark-chocolate dipped strawberries! Drink plenty of water if you are feeling hungry to cut down on the snacking. Sparkling water with fruit wedges are healthier than sugary beverages. Don’t feel that you won’t have fun at the Super Bowl party if you are serving or indulging in healthier foods that day. If you think about it, the day is mainly about being with friends and watching the game!
