JOSEPH EDWARD LUMBARD, JR. A citizen of New York, born in New York City, graduated by Harvard College, A.B. cum laude, 1922, LL.B. 1925, Honorary Degree, Doctor of Laws, William Mitchell College and Northwestern University; an Honorary S.J.D. from Suffolk University, 1967. Having served as Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York for two years, and as Special Assistant Attorney General of New York in an important prosecution, as a distinguished practitioner of the Bar of New York City, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of New York, former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and United States Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit since 1955, and Chief Judge since 1959, the Trustees of New York Law School are proud to honor you. We honor you as a practicing lawyer who has been involved and rendered great public service to the State and the Nation. We especially commend you for your leadership as the head of a Special Committee of the American Bar Association undertaking to set standards for the administration of criminal justice, for which you were awarded the American Bar Association Medal, its greatest honor, in 1968. We also honor you for the leadership you have shown as the Chief Judge of the Second Circuit, and your dedication to improving the administration of justice in the Federal Courts. .
We honor you again because of the ideals that you have expressed the treatment of those accused of crime, when you said, "There is no ?etter measure of the real nature of a society than the manner in which ~t treats the person accused of crime, determines guilt, and enforces its tudgments." Also when you said, "The fairness of the sentence and f h~ fact that it is apparent that the sentence has been arrived at by air and understanding means is, to my mind, of paramount importance." In

SAMUEL MILLER Samuel Miller graduated from City College in 1913 and from New York Law School in 1916. He has practiced since then with a leading law firm now known as Scribner & Miller. A lawyer of far-ranging talent, he has tilled all legal fields from intricate corporate finance to a famous murder case to the NRA cases of the Roosevelt era. Instrumental in organizing the Clinton Trust Company, Mr. Miller remained a leading figure in its activities. As Chairman of the Board from 1955 to 1959 he led his bank into its merger with the Chase Manhattan. In 1953 Mr. Miller took on his present responsibilities as Chairman of the Board of Pace College. He forged a distinguished Board which in turn selected outstanding administrators to direct the College. In recognition of his service Pace, in 1966, conferred an honorary 'doctorate upon him and is now constructing a building on its Westchester campus which will be known as Miller Hall. Himself a bridge between Pace and New York Law School, Mr. Miller worked diligently to affiliate the two. Since their affiliation became a reality he has served also on the New York Law School Board so that his counsel is now available to both institutions. Those fortunate enough to know Samuel Miller admire not only his wisdom and concern for others but also his good humor and gracious modesty. It is characteristic of the man that, in his biography in a leading law directory, he has deliberately refrained from listing any of his notable accomplishments. Samuel Miller-outstanding lawyer, leading banker, dedicated educator-your alma mater is pleased to confer upon you, with all the rights and privileges thereunto appertaining, the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

ADRIAN P. BURKE A native of New York City, son of Thomas F. and Rose Mary Daw Burke, Adrian P. Burke earned his A.B. degree at Holy Cross College in 1927, and his LL.B. degree at Fordham University in 1930, thus Preparing himself for a brilliant unfolding career. Later, St. John's University conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. Following his admission to the New York State Bar in 1932, he practiced law actively in the City of New York, served as Assistant Counsel to the Joint Legislative Committee Investigating Public U_tilities in 1936, and subsequently as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, thus becoming the head of the largest single law office_in the world. On November 2, 1954, he was elected an Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals by the People of the State of New York. After creditably and honorably rendering distinguished service for a full term, he was reelected in 1968 with the endorsement of all the major political parties, and now serves as Senior Associate Judge of that eminent

Other public and humanitarian service embraces his membership on the New York State Board of Social Welfare from 1950-1953; as a delegate to the 1938 Constitutional Convention; as founder and President of Children's Center in New York City and of the Youth Counsel Bureau; and as founder and secretary of Youth House for Boys. He is a member of the American, New York State and Bronx County Bar Associations and the New York County Lawyers Association, serving the latter as director until 1954.

JOSEPH I. LUBIN Joseph I. Lubin-business executive, certified public accountant, public servant, and philanthropist. A common denominator characterizes your manifold activities. Whatever you touch involves human welfare ana whatever involves human welfare touches you. You are a realist in judgment and an idealist in your concern for your fellow man. You have traveled through life gathering the fruits of your success, yet refatining those rare qualities of warmth, wisdom and vision which have won for you a legion of friends and admirers. Born in the teeming City of New York, a graduate of Pace College, New York University School of Law, and the holder of the degrees of Juris Doctor and Certified Public Accountant, you have given a greater part of your life to your chosen profession-accounting, interrelated with finance. A busy man, you still found time to devote yourself to the educational, civic and charitable needs of your country, your state and your city. In government, as former deputy Chief Investigator of the War Production Board during World War II; as the chairman of the Appeals Board of Selective Service; as chairman of the State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners and as a member of the New York State Pension Commission. In philanthropy, as the Treasurer of the United Jewish Appeal, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Rochelle Hospital, Children's Village, and many other philanthropic institutions. In education, as a member of the Board of Trustees of Pace College, of New York University, of Syracuse University, and of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, you have been honored by these institutions of higher learning by having received the honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws, Humane Letters, and Commercial Science. You are one of the main architects in the affiliation of the New York Law School with Pace College. In your honor, the Board of Trustees of Pace College have resolved that henceforth the School of Business Administration shall be known as the Joseph I. Lubin School of Business Administration at Pace College. And so, for distinction in the service to your profession, and to your country and for your humane interest in your fellow man, the New York Law School is privileged to bestow upon you the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
