CANDIDATES FOR THE HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF LAWS DANIEL GUTMAN Dean Daniel Gutman has devoted almost half a century to the legal profession. He has served in every branch of Government--executive, legislative, and judicial. In each he¡ has left the mark of dedicated effort. Dean Gutman was graduated Cum Laude from St. Lawrence University with the degree, Bachelor of Laws, and received a Doctor of Laws degree from St. Bernardine of Siena College in 1956. He was admitted to the practice of law in New York in 1923 and engaged in general practice until 1934, when he was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and successfully prosecuted many important criminal cases. He served as Special Assistant United States Attorney General, investigating title and mortgage company mail fra~ds, and served as Assistant District Attorney of Kings County. In the legislative field, Dean Gutman was elevated to the New York State Legislature in 1938 as a member of the Assembly, and was a New York State Senator from 1939 until 1943. His judicial service included 10 years as Justice of the Municipal Court of the City of New York, Acting Justice of the City Court, and President Justice of the Municipal Court, where he instituted the night court for the trial of small claims and by consolidation, and other measures, improved the administration of justice. In 1954, he was appointed Counsel to Governor Harriman, serving for four years in that capacity. His public service in connection with the government and the profession is noteworthy. He is a member of the New York State Commission on Revision and Simplification of the Constitution; a Past President and now Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Bar of New York, New Jersey; and Connecticut; Chairman of the Committee on Law Reform of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York; Chairman of the Committee on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar of the New York County Lawyers' Association; member of the New York State, American, and International Bar Associations; Chairman of the Committee on Court Reorganization and Judjcial Selection of the Citizens Union; a Fellow of the Academy of the Consular Law Society, and a member of the Institute of Judic\al Administration. He served as a member of the American Delegation to the 9th International Congress on Penal Law held at the Hague in 1964. He has lectured at the Law Schools of Cornell, Yale, Syracuse, New York, Soochow, Taiwan and Calcutta Universities. Not the least is his contribution as Dean and teacher in promoting the high standards of legal education. Under his Deanship, New York Law School has made great strides, for which the Trustees and alumni are grateful. To this eminent lawyer, jurist, law teacher, and administrator, New York Law School is pleased to confer upon Dean Daniel Gutman, the degree, Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.

JOHN VAN VOORHIS Towering in frame, keen in intellect, dedicated, courageous, and learned jurist, with a goodly flavor of sympathetic understanding and gentle humour, aptly describes Associate Judge John Van Voorhis of the New York State Court of Appeals. His birth-cry was heard in the town of Irondequoit, Monroe County where he has continued to reside until this day. That cry was probably an expression · of joy as he entered upon the stage of life, for he loves life, and gives it his · very best. After his preliminary education, John Van Voorhis obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale in 1919, and thereafter honorary degrees-Doctor of Laws -from Hobart College, Union College, and the University of Rochester. He studied law in the old establish~d firm of John Van Voorhis Sons' in Rochester, New York; was admitted to the bar in 1922; and thereafter became a member of that firm, practicing law for some 15 years.

In 1936, he was elected Justice of the Supreme Court in the Seventh Judicial District for a term commencing January 1, 1937; he was thereafter electe_d for a second term commencing January 1, 1951. Meanwhile, he had been designated by Governor Dewey as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Department, in January 1947, and redesignated _in January 1951. In April 1953, Judge Van Voorhis was appointed by Governor Dewey as temporary Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, and re- · appointed in January 1954 to fill the vacancy left by the election of Edmund H. Lewis, Chief Judge of -that Court. The same year he was nominated for a full term by both the Republican and Democratic parties, and elected in November. He has thus served the administration of justice for nearly thirty years, twenty of which has been in the Appellate Division and in the Court of Appeals. His devoted wife, June, bore him three children, a son now a practicing lawyer, and two daughters all now married. He is highly respected as one of its outstanding citizens in the community in which he has shared all his years, as well as in the larger community of the State of New York. Judge Van Voorhis has devoted all his life to the law as a highly capable practicing attorney, as an outstanding trial and appellate Judge, and presently as a member of the faculty of New York .Law School. His numerous opinions in the Court of Appeals, now imbedded in the jurisprudence of this State, reflect learning, industry, scholarship, and the courage of decision. He has demonstrated a .keen insight in every problem presented, and has never hesitated to stand alone in response to his own considered judgment. A thorough gentleman of unimpeachable character, an outstanding citizen of the State, a distinguished jurist esteemed by his colleagues as well as by the bench and bar of this State, New York Law School is pleased to confer upon Judge Van Voorhis, the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
