Dear friends,

As we reflect on the progress and achievements of the past year, it is with immense pride that we highlight the ongoing successes of New York Institute of Technology and the incredible generosity of our donors. New York Tech continues to enhance the student experience, expand our research capabilities, and embrace innovation. Our commitment to students remains steadfast as we focus on providing an education that empowers them to succeed in an ever-changing world where technology permeates every level of industry and science.

Transformational gifts from our donors enable us to invest in the latest technologies, state-of-the-art facilities, and scholarships that support our students’ growth. These contributions—along with smart financial planning that has strengthened our resilience—ensure that New York Tech is poised for even greater success.

One key highlight is the installation of our new fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology, which positions us on a promising path toward achieving R2-level research status. Weighing 13,000 pounds, this advanced piece of equipment will significantly enhance our new Biomedical Research, Innovation, and Imaging Center (BRIIC), enabling us to make groundbreaking strides in healthcare, biomedicine, neuroscience, and more. Our research faculty are already exploring exciting opportunities that will push the boundaries of knowledge and elevate our reputation as a leader in these critical areas.

Equally important is our ongoing focus on innovation and entrepreneurship across all schools and colleges. Whether in health and medicine, cybersecurity, architecture, business, computer science, engineering, sustainability, or other emerging fields, we are equipping our students with the skills, resources, and mindset needed to become the next generation of doers, makers, innovators, and healers.

Thank you again for supporting New York Tech and our students throughout 2024. Together, we are building a bright future that helps ensure exceptional student experiences and continuing success.

With sincere appreciation,

Another Year of Generosity Supports Student Success

New York Institute of Technology continues to benefit from the level of support and encouragement it receives from alumni, partner organizations, and friends across the country.

As we reflect on the progress we have made in 2024, much of it was possible because of the generosity of those who believe in the impact that New York Tech students will have on the fields to which we contribute our expertise, from bioengineering to medicine to information technology and the regions we call home—Long Island, New York City, northeast Arkansas, and Vancouver.

We have much to celebrate this year, such as transformational gifts from individuals like Andrew and Christina Berner, Daniel (D.O. ’86) and Danielle Ferrara, and the Ritter Arnold family, each of which will impact student lives now and into the future. Some also included New York Tech in their estate planning—such as John Sorrenti (B.S. ’72, M.B.A. ’78) and Olaf Butchma (D.O. ’88)—another way to ensure that they can help support a vibrant future for New York Tech for a long time to come.

We also forged partnerships with alumni, industry partners, and organizations who contributed more than monetary support; they contributed their time, expertise, and real-world resources, such as medical scrubs, stethoscopes, and lab supplies and equipment, to help our students thrive.

Because of the generous support of our vast community, students attended national conferences, conducted cutting-edge research, and published findings in scholarly journals, gaining valuable professional experience. We conducted major facility upgrades, from the brand-new residence hall at 120 Jericho Turnpike on Long Island to substantial renovations to lab and learning spaces in New York City.

As we look forward to another successful year in 2025, we recognize that the bright futures of New York Tech and its students are reliant on the generosity and enthusiasm of supporters like you.

Positively Impacting the Student Experience

The generosity of individuals is paramount to the success of New York Tech and our students. Several donors made gifts that will transform the student experience for years to come.

ANDREW AND CHRISTINA BERNER OFFER GENEROUS CHALLENGE MATCH

New York Tech Board of Trustees member Andrew Berner and his wife, Christina, have offered a donation challenge to encourage members of the NYITCOM-Arkansas community to support the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) location on the Jonesboro campus of Arkansas State University. Berner, president of Jetton General Contracting in Jonesboro, Ark., has committed to match up to $45,000 of donations for the next five years, totaling $225,000.

“We are proud to offer this donation match challenge to inspire our community to come together to support NYITCOM-Arkansas,” say the Berners.

“As populations have declined over the years in this region, many medical professionals have chosen to relocate to larger cities and research hospitals,” says Arnold, who has been a member of the NYITCOM-Arkansas Dean’s Advisory Board since its inception. “NYITCOM-Arkansas is focused on placing physicians back into the eastern third of the state, and I hope that this scholarship can encourage local kids to not only pursue their medical education but also to set down roots here after graduation and start their careers.”

Every dollar raised helps to unlock new opportunities for our students and programs, allowing us to invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders in the Delta.”
– Andrew and Christina Berner

RITTER ARNOLD ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP TO BRING DOCTORS TO NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Ritter Arnold, retired executive vice president of E. Ritter & Company, took advantage of Andrew Berner’s challenge match to establish the Dr. Michael and Julie Isaacson Scholarship, which awards $20,000 annually to one or two first-year medical students from the Mississippi Delta who aspire to practice in the region.

Student doctors Katie Head of Paragould, Ark., and Andrew Sullivan of Jonesboro, Ark., were the first two recipients of the Isaacson Scholarship, which was named after Arnold’s dear friends Michael and Julie Isaacson in honor of their commitment to serving northeast Arkansas through medicine. In August, Karley Bloesch, a first-year medical student and a native of Poplar Grove, Ark., was awarded the Isaacson Scholarship in its second year.

“I’m extremely grateful to the Arnold family and Dr. and Mrs. Isaacson for this gift, and I’m humbled to be selected,” Bloesch says. “Being from a small Delta town, rural healthcare impacts my life daily, and seeing the disparities within it inspires me to make an impact. This scholarship will not only help financially, but it will help motivate me to become the physician that my community needs.”

“I’m always interested in projects that I think are larger than myself and our family business, especially those

that will be particularly impactful for Jonesboro and northeast Arkansas,” says Arnold. “I think that the opening of NYITCOM-Arkansas was one of the most exciting projects ever developed in our region, and I’m proud to continue to support them and the work they do in our community.”

THE FERRARAS CONTINUE CHARITABLE SUPPORT WITH $1.25M GIFT

Daniel Ferrara (D.O. ’86), vice chair of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Danielle, made a $1.25 million gift to name the newly renovated plaza outside of the Serota Building on the Long Island campus in memory of his parents. The Angela and Ralph Ferrara Plaza includes updates to the existing studentfounded Healing Path and a new Healing Pond, featuring an amphitheater-style seating area and sustainable plantings that encourage natural drainage and enhance campus resiliency.

“The unwavering support my parents gave me throughout my academic journey shaped who I am today,” says Ferrara. “By naming this plaza in their honor, I hope to create a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations of students to dream big and never give up.”

The Ferraras’ gift also supports several annual events at New York Tech, such as the Big Give, NYITCOM Alumni Awards, and the NYITCOM Golf Classic.

Support for Research and Student Initiatives

Through the support of alumni and friends, New York Tech has facilitated valuable hands-on experiences for many students through research and other professional activities in 2024. Here are just a few highlights.

CENTER FOR CANCER RESEARCH: FRANK AND ANN RUSSO

At New York Institute of Technology’s Center for Cancer Research, faculty from across schools collaborate on multidisciplinary approaches to understand the mechanisms of cancer, develop innovative technologies for earlier detection and diagnosis, and discover novel therapies.

In 2024, Frank and Ann Russo provided support to the Center for Cancer Research to allow students to present their work. For example, funding from the Russos paid for the publication of a case report written by multiple medical students and faculty titled “A case of malignant transformation of a serous borderline ovarian tumor effectively treated with BRAF/MEK inhibitor combination” in Gynecologic Oncology Reports (see student names in sidebar).

Funding was also used to support College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) student Vani Gupta in attending and presenting at the Annual American Radium Society Conference in California.

CONFERENCE ON OSTEOPATHIC RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE: JORDAN KEYS (D.O. ’10)

In June, osteopathic physicians and scientists from around the world traveled to New York Tech’s Long Island campus, where they joined members of the NYITCOM community for the inaugural Conference on Osteopathic Research and Knowledge (CORK).

CORK was founded by Jordan Keys (D.O. ’10), NYITCOM associate professor and director of the Osteopathic Medicine Center, and Kimberly Wolf, D.O., associate professor and director of pediatric osteopathic manipulative medicine at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine, in collaboration with the nonprofit Osteopathy’s Promise to Children.

Attendees, including NYITCOM students, actively participated in lectures, personalized mentoring breakout sessions, and hands-on osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) workshops on topics such as how OMT may

improve the lives of patients with heart conditions, long-term COVID-19, cancer, and many other pressing health issues.

Sponsorship funding allowed NYITCOM to offer the conference at a lower price point, which permitted more people to attend. The funding also provided opportunities to bring renowned speakers who have now started to help mentor students. Funds were also used to sponsor students otherwise unable to afford the conference, as well as help with student research awards and student researcher travel expenses.

EDWARD GUILIANO GLOBAL FELLOWSHIPS HELP STUDENTS MAKE IDEAS A REALITY

For the past 10 years, the Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship Program has given more than 180 New York Tech students the opportunity to participate in experiential-based learning opportunities around the globe that unite academics and culture.

Among this year’s cohort was student Chaya Konig, who traveled to Ohio in April for her project “My Music: Creating Independent Play Opportunities for Children with Motor Impairments.” Six children aged 2 to 7 with a neurodegenerative condition called Canavan disease engaged in independent play for the first time.

The children were fitted with Muse 2 headsets that allowed them to produce music using just their brain waves. After the project, Konig interviewed the children’s caregivers and sent them a digital copy of the music their child produced.

“I had the idea for this project for a while,” says Konig. “Seeing the results made me realize that it is my responsibility to bring this idea to fruition. Thank you, Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship, for making this a reality.”

Another student who benefited from the funding was Avery Gilson, a

physics student who spent 10 days in August at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Gilson pursued his project “Research on Polarization Aberrations at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center,” in which he worked in the Habitable Worlds Observatory—the first telescope designed specifically to search for signs of life on planets orbiting other stars. For his research, Gilson mathematically modeled polarization aberrations in the primary mirror of a telescope.

“As an experimental scientist with a love for optical physics, this project was a dream come true,” says Gilson. “I am tremendously thankful that the fellowship provided an opportunity for me to work at NASA.”

DONATIONS HELP UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS ATTEND NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is a student-driven organization committed to supporting underrepresented minority medical students and addressing the health needs of underserved communities.

SNMA empowers its members with educational resources and networking opportunities, such as the annual SNMA National Conference Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC). To help more students afford to attend AMEC, Philesha Teape, president of

NYITCOM’s SNMA chapter in 2023, and Serena M. Jones, SNMA’s 2023 vice president, began the SNMA Travel Fund, which raised $17,000 in 2024.

“AMEC stands as the largest assembly of underrepresented medical and premedical students, and the support we received allowed NYITCOM students to embark on an uplifting and inspiring journey that will stay with them throughout their careers in medicine,” says Teape, who was among the recipients of funding to attend the conference in 2024.

The largest supporter of the SNMA Travel Fund this year was Raysha Crawford (D.O. ’14), a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board, who contributed $10,000 to help “give students as many opportunities as possible.”

“When I was a medical student, I was a part of SNMA; to be able to support their activities and the underrepresented students who benefit from them makes a lot of sense to me,” says Crawford, who is a physician through telehealth provider Amwell. “Through SNMA and in general, we need to support our minority students and doctors so that underrepresented communities can get better access to healthcare.”

Philanthropy Supports Facility Upgrades

Many donations, including unrestricted gifts, support facility upgrades that benefit our entire community. Here are a few of the exciting upgrades that took place this year.

GRAND OPENING OF JERICHO RESIDENCE HALL

On September 26, a grand opening ribboncutting ceremony was held for a new residence hall at 120 Jericho Turnpike in Jericho, N.Y., setting new standards for student residence halls on Long Island. The project represents a significant investment in the future of the area’s educational infrastructure.

“Our Jericho Residence Hall is specifically designed to surround our students with the best environments that balance their academic, social, and personal wellness,” says New York Tech President Henry C. Foley, Ph.D.

One of New York Tech’s top priorities is to provide the best student experiences possible, and these new facilities are another example of how we strive to support them both inside and outside the classroom.”

UPGRADES TO NEW YORK CITY CAMPUS

During summer 2024, the New York City campus underwent several upgrades that will impact students’ academic opportunities as well as their quality of life.

In the Edward Guiliano Global Center located at 1855 Broadway, the biology and chemistry labs on the ninth floor were gutted and fully renovated, adding about 40 percent more usable space and increasing student capacity. Labs were rearranged and outfitted with new fume hoods, mechanical systems, equipment such as spectrometers and a water polisher, lab benches, octagonal tables for group work, and more.

Also at 1855 Broadway, a computer room on the 10th floor was converted into a robotics lab for students, staff, and faculty, complete with two new robotic arms for 3-D modeling and printing. Work was also done on the ground floor to connect 1855 to the Student Activities Building at 1849 Broadway so that students don’t have to go outside to move between the buildings. Two ADA-compliant bathrooms were also added on the ground floor near the Metro Café in 1849 Broadway.

RENOVATION AND REOPENING OF OMM LAB

On December 6, the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Lab at the College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) was reopened to the community after a full renovation. The lab now features electric adjustable tables, natural lighting, state-of-the-art HD monitors, and iPad-driven learning stations. It is further equipped with modern visual recording capabilities that allow hands-on sessions to be stored and streamed for 24/7 access.

“We worked closely with the different faculty groups who use the OMM Lab to make it the best teaching and learning space possible for our community,” says Raquel Romanick, associate dean for

operations at NYITCOM. “The training students learn in the lab is very visual, so we wanted to make sure the space was as interactive as possible, from glass-topped tables so students can see hand positioning even from below, a display with live annotation capabilities, and 10 ceiling-mounted cameras so students both in-person and online can see the room from all angles.”

The OMM Lab offers maximum flexibility so it can accommodate future NYITCOM needs, such as continuing education and workshops for local resident physicians and other audiences.

THE TD CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS COMMUNITY FREE CLINICS

As part of its commitment to improving access to healthcare, NYITCOM operates three Community Free Clinics in Central Islip, Harlem, and Old Westbury. These clinics provide services to patients 18 and older with or without insurance and regardless of immigration status.

These clinics can offer preventative and general health checks, in-house lab tests, and more, thanks to generous support from the TD Charitable Foundation, including a $25,000 grant in 2024. TD Charitable Foundation also gave a $25,000

grant to the Community Free Clinics in 2023, demonstrating their continued support of the facilities’ mission to offer access to healthcare for individuals who may not otherwise have been able to receive the care they need.

A NEW f MRI: THE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH, INNOVATION, AND IMAGING CENTER (BRIIC)

This past November, the Biomedical Research, Innovation, and Imaging Center received a central piece of technology: its new functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine, capable of measuring not only structure but also functional changes across different systems of the body. The fMRI is just one of the many incredible imaging technologies that call this new facility its home.

The new 20,000-square-foot BRIIC will provide researchers across a variety of disciplines and expertise with new opportunities to advance human health and discover potential treatments for pressing health conditions and biomedical challenges. This facility will also provide students with the ability to participate in groundbreaking research.

The BRIIC is anticipated to expand New York Tech’s research footprint, supporting our endeavors toward becoming a Carnegie-classified Research 2 university by 2028.

Would you like to see the new BRIIC firsthand? Contact us via email at development@nyit.edu or by phone at 516.686.7809 to schedule a personal tour.

Gifts in Kind

FOSTERING A PARTNERSHIP WITH ENZO BIOCHEM

From a pipeline of internships to on-campus COVID-19 testing, Enzo Biochem and New York Tech have been partners for more than five years. Recently, the relationship has been furthered thanks to mutual interest in relevant research being conducted on campus.

Offering support to New York Tech comes in many shapes and sizes, including in-kind donations in which alumni, friends, and companies provide useful items, services, or expertise to further institutional goals and improve the student experience. Learn more about some of the creative, generous ways people and organizations supported New York Tech in 2024.

Established in 1976, Enzo Biochem is a global leader in labeling and detection technologies across genomic, protein, cell, and tissue analysis platforms. In 2024, Enzo donated $100,000 worth of reagents, lab materials, and microplate equipment for use by New York Tech’s Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences.

“New York Tech has been great about inviting people from Enzo to come to campus to look for crossover points,” says Kara Cannon, chief executive officer at Enzo. “We toured labs and started to make connections with faculty, and some of that research benefits several of Enzo’s products and platforms. We’re a small company, and it can be challenging to give big dollar donations, but we found a great way to support New York Tech with our own products and equipment that can help further these faculty members’ work and hopefully our own innovations.”

MEADOWS MEDICAL DONATES $30K OF SUPPLIES

Located in Quogue, N.Y., Meadows Medical Supply donated educational medical supplies to New York Tech’s School of Health Professions. Valued at $30,000, these items included needles, catheters, and IV pumps for students to use to gain hands-on training for their degrees.

The departments of nursing, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and occupational therapy were given full access to all the donated supplies. They were largely used to help students advance their knowledge of how to use these items in a clinical capacity.

The donation of medical supplies allows us to provide hands-on experience with the latest tools, giving our students an edge in their education and preparing them for challenges they will face in their careers. This will allow us to continue delivering high-quality training and education to the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.”

FIVE YEARS OF NEW STETHOSCOPES FOR STUDENTS: ROB BROWN, JR. (B.S. ’02)

A graduate of New York Tech’s first class of the physician assistant (PA) studies program, Rob Brown, Jr. doubled down on his commitment in 2023 to give free stethoscopes to students. In 2024, Brown committed to providing the funds to buy stethoscopes for PA students beginning their clinical year for five more years.

A former lieutenant with the New York City Fire Department, Brown is dedicated to philanthropy beyond New York Tech; in 2002, he founded New York Firefighters Heart and Lung Institute, a medical center offering the best healthcare experience, including cardiac and pulmonary testing, for firefighters. He also founded the New York Firefighters Heart Foundation, which provides education and advanced medical screenings to help reduce line-of-duty deaths in the fire service across the nation and the world.

“I never thought I’d have more than a thousand dollars to give away,” says Brown, whose self-funded foundation donates more than $150,000 annually to support the families of terminally ill and fallen firefighters. “I hope New York Tech students will give when they become alumni so they can pay it forward. There’s a responsibility for people to donate money to good causes when they’re able—that’s what makes the world go round.”

FIGS SCRUBS FOR NYITCOMARKANSAS: REUBEN HORACE (D.O. ’22)

NYITCOM-Arkansas alumnus

Reuben Horace donated 107 sets of FIGS scrubs to the Class of 2026 enrolled at his alma mater.

“I feel I was lucky to get into medical school, and I want to give something back to New York Tech for that opportunity,” says Horace, who works in emergency medicine at Duke University. “This is a relatively small thing, but it’s a start, and FIGS is a great brand to be able to share with these students. I owe NYITCOM-Arkansas a lot for believing in me, and I hope this is the start of a longer relationship. I’d love to be able to do something more long-term in the future, like a scholarship.”

A Bigger Impact on the future

Planned giving allows generous individuals to make a larger and longer impact on New York Tech and its students. Here are two alumni who chose to include New York Tech in their estate planning this year to support their personal interests and passions long into the future.

Queens, N.Y., native John Sorrenti has allocated funds from his estate to support the School of Architecture and Design, a place that allowed him to pursue his passion and give back to society.

Sorrenti, honored with the 2024 Legacy Award from the FRIENDS of the School of Architecture and Design (above), has been deeply connected to New York Tech for decades. He is a founding member of FRIENDS, a group he and several friends helped form to promote a working relationship between the school and architecture, construction, and interior design professions.

“Since its inception 20 years ago, FRIENDS has not only offered students professional connections but it’s also raised a little over $2 million to fund experiential opportunities, like attending national American Institute of Architects conferences or traveling to Milan for a design competition,” he says.

Now Sorrenti has added planned giving to his list of ways in which he supports New York Tech.

“I’m fortunate that things have gone well in my life and career, and I want to give something back,” he says. “My hope is to continue to give students opportunities they wouldn’t necessarily have because there’s nothing quite like seeing things firsthand in a professional environment. To be able to allow a handful of students to go to these functions, sometimes in other countries, and to understand the history of architecture is important to me, and I’m glad I can continue those opportunities even after I’m gone.”

After years in internal medicine, Butchma is now the founder and chief executive officer of Titan Healthcare, a group of nurse practitioners and physician assistants who work on-site in short-term rehabilitation facilities.

“NYITCOM was still fairly young when I started there, but they had very good faculty, particularly in anatomy and physiology,” says Butchma. “I met nice people and learned a lot, and as the school has become larger, they’re doing even more for their students than when I attended. Medicine is an art, and the people who go into it usually do so for a good reason.

I’ve always recognized the importance of mentorship, so it was natural to do it in my own backyard,” says Sorrenti, who is founder and president of JRS Architect, P.C.

OLAF BUTCHMA (D.O. ’88)

Thanks to a successful medical career, Olaf Butchma is now looking into the future as he makes plans in his will to support the educational institutions that helped him achieve his goals—including the College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM).

"In a way, my family and I are beholden to these schools for everything we have,” says Butchma, who has also made donations to Adelphi University and his sons’ boarding school. "These are my alma maters, and I want to hold my head high about having gone to these fine schools. Things have moved along nicely as NYITCOM has gotten larger, and I want to keep supporting better opportunities because ultimately it ends up reflecting on us as alumni.”

These young students have everything ahead of them and are optimistic about the future, and I want to try to support that.”

Financial Snapshot

The report below summarizes New York Tech’s financial performance for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, with comparatives for the prior year. New York Tech concluded fiscal year 2024 with a net operating margin of $20 million (7% of total revenues) and $24 million added to total net assets. In addition to another balanced operating budget, New York Tech entered the second year of a $280 million capital and information technology redevelopment plan, directing financial resources to campus facilities, modernization of our IT systems and security, and investments in research programming. Utilizing its stable credit ratings, in spring 2024 New York Tech borrowed $100 million in tax-exempt bonds through the New York State Dormitory Authority to expand funding for academic and research spaces, infrastructure, and recreational facilities on the Long Island and New York City campuses. New York Tech also leased newly redeveloped academic spaces in Vancouver and student residence halls in New York City and Long Island. Management and the Board of Trustees provide attentive stewardship to the university’s financial health and resources, ensuring sustainable funding for future operating and capital needs and achievement of new mission-driven goals.
