SeaweedandSelfhood: GrowingUpAmidsttheRiseofK-Culture <김과 나:한국문화의 부상 속에서 성장하기>

IreneKwon<CalifoniaAcademyofMath& Science. CA>

K-Culture’s popularity has grown exponentially over the past two decades. The world has become infatuated with K-everything: K-Pop, K-Food, K-Beauty, K-Movies, KDramas, and more. Idol groups and soloists appear frequently on Billboard Hot 100, including global acts like BTS and Blackpink. Shows such as Squid Game have become international phenomena, drawing record-breaking viewership on Netflix. Korean beauty products have become global staples, and kimchi and Korean ramen are stocked in grocery stores around the world. Korea – once one of the world’s poorest nations – has transformed into a cultural powerhouse. While reflecting on this global rise, I’m brought back to one of my earliest memories, one that helped shape how I saw Korean Culture as a Korean American child. On my second day of kindergarten, I brought roasted seaweed for lunch – something completely normal in my household and today’s world. But at school that day, I learned that what was normal for me wasn’t normal for everyone else. Kids wrinkled their noses, called my food weird, asking why I would something so green and “gross.” I cried the entire car ride home, wishing for my food, my culture, even though I looked a little less different. That memory lingered for years, making me feel that everything about my Korean identity had to be tucked away.

Back then, Korean culture in the U.S. wasn’t widely understood or accepted. It was foreign, unfamiliar, and easily mocked. Today, I sometimes struggle to process how quickly things have changed. The same foods I once secretly threw in the trash now sit in mainstream grocery aisles. People recommend their favorite Kdramas to me with excitement, not discretion.

Lines form outside the newest Korean BBQ restaurants which can now be found all around me. And yet, despite the excitement surrounding K-culture, part of me still asks: Why didn’t this acceptance come sooner? Why did I feel ashamed of something the world now celebrates?

Let me be clear. Despite my mixed feelings, I feel enormous pride in K-Culture’s rise and the in the journey I’ve undergone alongside it.

K- c ulture’s global success may appear explosive, but it was the product of decades of gradual growth. The spread of digital platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, Instagram, and TikTok gave international audiences unprecedented access to Korean content. At the same time, Korean entertainment companies actively adapted for global audiences, offering subtitles, translations, and international collaborations. Scholars note that this strategic globalization significantly accelerated the Korean Wave, known as Hallyu, in the 2010s.

The COVID-19 pandemic also played a significant role. With people around the world confined to their homes, Korean content provided comfort escape. Nielsen reported a surge in international K-drama viewership during lockdowns, while K-Pop fandom communities grew rapidly as fans sought connection online. In a time defined by isolation, K-culture offered community.

But timing alone cannot explain its impact. Korean media’s novelty, emotional storytelling, and direct engagement with fans set it apart. KPop artists post behind-the-scenes content, livestream frequently, and maintain active social media presence, creating intimacy and accessibility. Storytelling – through dramas, films, and even music videos – blends universal themes with a unique Korean perspective, keeping content both relatable and fresh. Equally important is the dedication of fans who translate

videos, share content, and build global communities. Fan-driven participation is a crucial engine of Hallyu’s worldwide expansion.

On a personal level, K-culture has helped shape how I see myself and navigate the world. I grew up eating Korean food, speaking Korean at home, and celebrating birthdays by singing in both English and Korean. Yet for years, I carried childhood embarrassment around my identity.

That started changing when I began to make new friends, Korean and non-Korean. They didn’t think that I was “different”. Many even shared my growing love for K-culture. These friendships made me feel seen for the first time rather than “other.”

A true turning point came though K-Pop and K-dramas. One of my first favorite songs was IU’s “Blueming,” which opened the door to a world of music that felt familiar yet empowering. IU quickly became my favorite artist, not just for the sound of her music, but for the meaning. The warmth in her songs. Through K-Pop, I was able to find joy and community during the pandemic. I formed new friendships by liking the same groups and bonding with others over concerts and choreography. Today, I’m part of my school’s Korean Dance Club, in which we do K-Pop dance performances. Dancing with others who love the same music has helped me embrace a part of myself I once wanted to hide.

K-culture has also deepened my connection with my family. As my interest grew, so did my desire to reconnect with my roots. I improved my

Korean, which helped me communicate with ease with relatives living in Korea. When I visit Korea now, I no longer feel so out of place. Instead, I feel grounded and grateful to get the opportunity to practice a part of a culture I once felt pressured to minimize. Yet this journey hasn’t been without complexity. While I appreciate the global enthusiasm surrounding Korean culture, I sometimes feel uneasy about its commodification. The same foods, shows, and traditions that once marked me as “different” are not marketed as trendy products. I’m happy people appreciate K-culture, but I also want that appreciation to be genuine – for people to recognize the depth behind the aesthetics, not just consume what’s popular.

Still, looking forward, I believe that K-culture can continue to thrive if it grows sustainably: by protecting artists from burnout, maintaining cultural authenticity, and encouraging healthy fan communities. Its power lies not only in its entertainment value, but in how it brings people together. When I think back to my kindergarten self, crying in the car, I realize how far both K-culture and I have come. What once made me feel ashamed is now an essential part of my life and the world. More importantly, it’s become a source of pride, connection and identity. I’ve grown into someone who no longer hides her culture but celebrates it instead. The growth of Kculture has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life.
