행부 모임을 갖고,“올해의 코리
안 퍼레이드 및 페스티벌을 역대
최대규모로 개최하기 위해 준비
위원회를 조직위원회로 격상시켰 다”고 밝혔다. 이명석 회장은“한국의 지자체 를 통해 그 지역 중소기업체들의 참여를 적극 추진할 것”이라며, “한인사회의 힘을 결집시켜 역대 최대규모로 이번 퍼레이드 및 페 스티벌을 성공시키겠다”고 포부 를 밝혔다.
이명석 회장은 또“최근 코리 안 페스티벌이 열리는 맨해튼 32 스트리트에서 코리아타운협회(회
장 이영희)측과 첫 준비모임도 가 졌다. 조직위원회에 개인 후원자 와 후원단체, 후원기업 관계자들
을 대거 조직위원회에 영입시킬 것”이라며,“이번 행사는 퍼레이 드 후 32 스트리트 인근의 뉴욕한
국문화원 및 퍼레이드가 끝나는
지점과 가까운 뉴욕한인회관을 개방해, 입체적인 행사가 되도록
할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

행사에서, 탐 수오지 제 3지역구
연방하원의원으로부터 뉴욕과 자
빛낸 인물로 선정 되어 특별상(Special Recongnition Award)을 받았다. 챔피언 태권도 도장 소속의 정
준기 군은 7년 동안 태권도를 수
련하며 뛰어난 끈기와 회복력을 보여 주었다. 거의 모든 토너먼트
의 첫 라운드에서 패하는 좌절에
도 불구하고 매일 훈련하여 2년 후부터는 뉴욕주와 동부지역 선
수권 대회에서 금메달, 내셔널스
대회에서 은메달, 국가대표 선발
전에서 동메달을 땄다. 그후에도
지속적인 노력으로 작은 키를 극
복하고 2023년 미국 랭킹 9위에서
2024년 올림픽 스파링 부문 2위로
올라섰다.
이런 훈련과정에도 불구하고
평점 98점을 유지하면서 피아노

(토) 오후 1시(미 동부시간) 맨해 튼에 있는 코리아 소사이어티에 서 제15회 영어웅변대회를 화상 및 대면 하이브리드(hybrid)로 개 최했다. 올해 주제는‘내가 경험 한 한국문화(KoreanCulture: MyExperience)’였다. 참가 대상은 미 전역에 거주하 는 9학년부터 12학년의 한국계, 미국인 또는 다민족 고등학생으 로 신분에 관계없이 누구나 참여 할 수 있었다. 참가희망자는‘내 가 경험한 한국문화’를 주제로 영 어 글자수 1,400자 내, 웅변길이는 4-6분의 원고를 작성하여 경운장 학회로 보내면 경운장학회는 원 고를 심사하여 결선 진출자를 선 정하고, 결선 진출자들은 장학회 가 진행하는 스피치 워크샵을 통 해 스피치 코칭을 받은 후, 5월 3 일 본선에서 경합했다. 이번 대회 에는 미 전역에서 9학년부터 12학 년의 한국계와 비한국계 고등학 생 70여 명이 원고를 제출, 13명이 결선에 진출했다. 경운장학회 관 계자들은“대회를 거듭할수룩 응 모 학생들이 많아지고, 특히 외국 계 학생들도 늘어 한국에 대해 올 바를 인식을 갖게하는 등 교육적 효과가 크다. 우리 학생들이 학교 에서 배우지 못하는 한국의 역사, 문화, 상황, 인물, 디아스포라(전 세계에 진출해 살고 있는 한인들) 을 스스로 공부하는 과정에서 한 국에 대한 자긍심이 커지는 등 웅 변대회의 효과와 파급력이 크다, 대회

Goldrings, goldbuttons, goldkeys. These weren’tjustobjectsbutcherishedfragmentsof people’slives: symbolsoflove, heritage, and memoriespassedfromonegenerationtothenext. Yet, inamomentofnationalcrisis, millionsof Koreanswillinglypartedwiththesepersonal treasuresduringthe1997 IMFCrisis. The InternationalMonetaryFund’sintervention followingKorea’smountingdebtprompted ordinaryKoreancitizenstodonateorsellatotal of227 tonsofgoldworth2.2 billiondollars. And thisisjustoneofthecountlesstimeswhenKorea exemplifieditsdeeplyembeddedsenseof solidarity, wherewidelysharedvaluesenabled thenationtoovercometremendouschallenges. Inahomogeneousculturewheremosthave mutually-heldprinciples, or민족성, Koreans havebeenabletoleveragethisunityto achieveremarkablypositiveoutcomes. Afewyearsago, mydadcamehomefrom workandshowedmeapictureofthehospital roomwherehespenthisdayscaringfor patients. Buttheroomwasdistinguishedbya plaquehangingoutsideofitandboldly displayingaKoreanname: SungdukBauman.
In1995, atjust21, hewasdiagnosedwithchronicmyelogenous leukemiaandgivenfiveyearstolive—unlesshefoundanidentical bonemarrowdonor. AsaKoreanadopteeinAmericawithno knownrelatives, hissearchesintheU.S. failed. Hisparentsturned toKorea, whereethnicmatchesweremorelikely. Newspapers, TV coverage, anddocumentariesinKoreaspreadtheword, andin justoneyear, 20,000 Koreans- movedbyhisstory- volunteered totestiftheywereamatchforBauman. Forexample, trends ineducationofsendingchildrento학원, career choices, especiallyofbecomingdoctors, oreven beautystandardsofhavingsmall, palefaces, oftenpushindividualstowardnarrowideals, leavinglittleroomforpersonalpreferencesor alternativepaths. Thiscanmakeitdifficultfor individualswithdifferentideasorlifestylestobe accepted, leadingtosocialexclusion, as divergencefromthenormisviewedasan anomalyratherthanavalidexpressionof identity.
Eventually, thisbiasagainstdifferentwaysof thinkingcanescalateintodiscriminationbased solelyonphysicaldifferences. Forexample, immigrantswhocometoKoreamayfacesevere judgementduetotheirunfamiliarlooks. This dynamicspotlightsthedownsidesofstrongly emphasizingsharedvalues.

Inthisway, Koreanculturecan continuetobeasourceofstrengthandpride, for both Koreansandnon-Koreans, pavingtheway foramoreharmoniousandprogressivesociety. ■

Thismutualwillfor progressenabledthecountrytorisefrompostindependencepovertytobecomingtheworld’ s 13thlargesteconomy, asreportedbythe InternationalTradeAdministration.
However, alongsidetheoptimistic manifestationsofasharedculturalidentitywith commonvalues, therearenegativeoutcomes
