김광석 회장은“뉴욕한인회는

1960년 6월 12일 40여 명의 한인들

이 뉴욕한인교회에서 한인회 규칙

을 만들고 서상복 회장을 초대회

장으로 선출해서 37대에 이르기까 지 헌신해 왔다. 그동안 한인회는 회장을 중심으로 뉴욕일원 한인들 의 정체성확립, 인권증진, 각 단체 나 개인 지원활동과 타민족과의 교류확대 등을 통해 초석을 다져 왔다. 앞으로도 초심을 돌아보고 사명을 잘 감당할 수 있도록 정진 하겠다. 협조를 당부한다.”고 말했 다. 축사에 나선 김의환 뉴욕총영 사는“나와 뉴욕한인회는 64세로

1960년 출범한 뉴욕한인회는 회관 건립기금을 모아오다 1983년 10월 27일 16, 17대 강익조 회장 단 시 현재의 건물을 구입, 자체 회관 을 마련함으로써 비약적 발전을 거듭했다.

뉴욕한인회는 38대에 들어서면 서 조직과 기능을 재정비하고 새 비전 제시에 열중하고 있다. 회칙수정을 통해 비영리규졍 에 합당하게 회칙을 재정비하고 이사회의 독립성 및 업무, 회관조 사 개발위원회를 설립해 이사회 특별기구로 두기로 했다. 2세 참여

텔에서 개최했다.

이사회는 12명의 이사들이 참

석하여 2023년도 결산보고와

2025년도 예산과 사업 계획 및 후

원기관을 결정했다.

후원지는 미국 나바호, 케냐, 탄자니아, 말라위, 브라질, 페루,

몽골, 필리핀 및 인도 등 53 곳이 며 열악한 환경에 처해있는 어린 이들과 전쟁 피해 난민 어린이들, 장애인들의 급식과 교육 및 복지 를 위해서 약 70만 달러의 후원금

을 책정했다. 또 최근에 자연 재해를 입은 라이베리아에 1만 달러를 추가로

보내기로 결정했다.

이번 정기 이사회에서 202526년도 차기 총회장으로 워싱턴 DC 김재인 동부지역회장이 선출

되었고, LA 지부의 고상미 전 지 부장이 이사로 선출됐다. 올해 총회는 9월 30일부터 10 월2일까지 도쿄에서 개최된다.

대뉴욕지구 경기여고 동창회 산하, 경운장학회는 4월 27일 오후 1시 맨해튼에 있는 코리아 소사이어티 (The Korea Society)에서‘한국전쟁(The Korean War)’을 주제로 제14회 영어웅변대회를 화상 및 대 면 하이브리드(hybrid)로 개최했다.

참가 대상은 미 전역에 거주하는 9학년부터 12학

년의 한국계와 비한국계 고등학생이다. 이 대회에 참

가한 학생들은 올해 2월‘한국전쟁(The Korean War)’을 주제로 글자수 1,400자 내, 웅변길이는 4-6

분의 원고를 경운장학회로 보내, 경운장학회가 심사

를 하여 결선 진출자 15명의 선정을 마쳤다.

결선 진출자들은 장학회가 진행하는 스피치 워크

샵을 통해 스피치 코칭을 받은 후, 4월 27일 본선에서

경합했다. 이들 15명 중 거주지에 따라 11명은 직접

대회장에서 대면으로, 3명은 virtual로, 1명은 recording으로 결선을 치렀다. 특히 올해는 15명의

파급력이 크다, 대회 참가자들은 대회

결선 진출자 중 4명이 비한국계 학생이었고, 대상 등 입싱자 중에도 비 한국계 학생들이 많았다. 경운장학회는 그동안 2011년~2021년 대회 입상자 들의 원고를 모아‘Teens Speak’라는 단행본을 내 전국 고등학교와 각 도서관에 배부 했는데, 2022~2031년 대회 입상작도 단행본으로 출판할 예정 이다. 경운장학회 관계자들은“대회를 거듭할수룩 응모 학생들이 많아지고, 툭히 외국계 학생들도 늘어 한국에 대해 올바를 인식을 갖게하는 등 교육적 효과 가 크다. 우리 학생들이 학교에서 배우지 못하는 한 국의 역사, 문화, 상황, 인물, 디아스포라(전 세계에 진출해 살고 있는 한인들)을 스스로 공부하는 과정 에서

Let not my voice, nor my will be left unheard. May democracy always prevail! And if it takes a war with the sacrificed blood of millions of soldiers and civilians to water the soil for the upheld protection of democracy, then let that be the case and look to the Korean War as a historical example. The lasting echoes of the “Forgotten War”, promptly named due to the lack of attention it received following World War II, leave behind not only the permanent separation of two countries, but also a great impact of continued democracy with international support in South Korea. The Korean War was the first military action carried out in the Cold War, setting the stage for tension between the United States and the Soviet Union with their respective allies.

After Japan’s long-awaited surrender of Korea in 1945, the Korean peninsula split into two sovereign states under the influence of the U.S. and the Soviet Union. A capitalist government led by Syngman Rhee emerged, clashing with Kim Il Sung’s new ruthless communist regime,

intensifying conflicts and violence.

Eventually, on June 25, 1950, soldiers of the Northern Korean People’s Army, armed with military equipment from the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea along the 38th parallel line. The North Korean army found quite formidable allies in the Soviet Union, having shared communist ideologies, as they saw an opportunity in South Korea to easily take over and increase global communist influence.

The army of the Republic of Korea fought back to absolutely no avail. With President Truman of the United States’ urging for the United Nations to help, the article “Five Korean War ‘Firsts’ Had Lasting Impacts” from defense.gov states that 22 countries provided South Korea with aid of combat forces and medical assistance. These countries providing support represented the United Nations Command, or the UNC, which was formed in July of 1950. The UNC’s involvement in the Korean War, according to the official UNC website, “signified the world’s first attempt at collective security under the United Nations system”.

Although initially pushed all the way down to Pusan, UNC reinforcements and supplies arrived and the UN forces started to recover in the first few weeks of August. Pushing offense, General Douglas McArthur of the U.S. initiated a strategic surprise attack of the Inchon Landing on September 15th, deep behind the enemy lines of North Korea, pushing enemies far up north.

Hearing Premier Kim Il-Sung’s pleas for help, the Chinese communists were prompted to directly join the Korean War with the Battle of Unsan on October 25th. With China’s support, fighting continued around the 38th parallel for the next two years in a war of attrition.

Fighting stalled to an end on July 27th, 1953, when an armistice agreeing with the remaining separation of the country through the Korean Demilitarized Zone on the 38th parallel, was signed by the UNC, China, and North Korea.

Following the Korean War, South Korea experienced rapid economic growth and now,

according to the International Trade Administration, South Korea’s economy is ranked 13th biggest in the world. How did one of the poorest countries a few decades ago become a leading power in economic and international affairs today? In the end, the international allies in the UN had successfully defended democracy and capitalism against communism during the Korean War for South Korea.

In the book, I Will Shoot Them from my Loving Heart: Memoir of a South Korean Officer in the Korean War, Won Moo Hurh writes, “Without the help of U.S. Armed Forces, the ROK Armed Forces would not have survived the Korean War at all” (Hurh 9). 137,250 U.S. soldiers had sacrificed their blooming youthful lives for a then-unknown, small country in East Asia.

important ethics of human rights like democracy against ongoing international conflicts. So learning from our past, let’s look at an extremely similar event that is happening right now.

On February 24, 2022, just about two years ago, Russia invaded Ukraine in hopes of restoring the former glory and power of the late Soviet Union. Putin does not view the democratic nation of Ukraine as its own separate country, but instead, the land as part of Russia, as Ukraine had been lost by the Soviet Union after its downfall. Currently, Russia is depriving Ukraine of their freedom, displacing more than 6.3 million Ukrainians, as reported by UNrefugees.org. Putin’s global influence agenda parallels those of the communists of North Korea, Soviet Union, and China during the Korean War.

Similar to how the United Nations Command greatly aided South Korea during the Korean War, more countries need to come together and help Ukraine end the ongoing war with Russia through military and medical aid. War cannot always be prevented, yet I believe that countries can work together to help mitigate and stop the effects of war as soon as possible, while also upholding human rights and democracy through international collaborative efforts.

Are the certain sacrifices and tragedies of millions of people, including the separation of thousands of families, really justified in the grand scheme of wars? We need to act now with a powerful global alliance to stop these world-wide devastations of war.
