What sources of inspiration do you draw upon when crafting your plays?

Usually there’s some personal and sociopolitical paradox or question that I’ve been carrying around — till one day my imagination gets ignited by something beyond myself and I begin to see a play. Those sparks of ignition have never been the same ones, or predictable — as much as I wish they were! There’s a brilliant quote from Leonard Cohen which speaks to this: “If I knew where the good songs come from, I’d go there more often.” Every time I’ve tried to replicate a process of inspiration or creation, the universe laughs at me, and I get no good writing done.

I write to find out what I’m feeling and thinking. To claw myself out of loneliness or confusion, to feel more connected. We have so many reasons for and methods of hiding from ourselves and others. But you can’t hide in a play. I don’t love writing. (Like Dorothy Parker, “I love having written.” The actual writing is agony.)

I also write to gain access to the rehearsal room, which is my favorite place in the whole world — a place where I can investigate my thoughts with others. I get to ask many thought-provoking questions.

How have your personal experiences and where you've come from influenced your plays?

I was born in Poland and grew up in working class, multicultural North Jersey, where my immigrant, single mother worked in factories and cleaned houses.

My experience of America was that everyone was from somewhere else. For most of my friends’ parents, English was their second language — something they were learning alongside their children. I hear poetry in what some people might call “broken” English. I hear the ghosts of first languages hybridizing into something new, minds working within two cultures to make meaning and connection. I find similar inspiration in the idiosyncratic “Jersey mouth” and character. It’s f*ckin beautiful. A lot of my characters are composites of friends and family, of people I know or have been. They’re

Free reading material for me and my sister, she figured. And one day while cleaning, a pamphlet in the stacks caught her eye. It was for ‘something called Cabaret.’ But most importantly, John Stamos was in it. She left the pamphlet in my room that night, telling me only that “Uncle Jesse is in NYC.” This was of course the iconic Sam Mendes production at Studio 54, originally starring Alan Cumming as the Emcee. I was in my last year of high school. Around this same time, I had just won $45 playing pool. (At a pool hall called Guys & Dolls in Belleville, NJ — my career was fated.) I used to do this for extra scratch, but I’d never won THAT much so I figured I should use my lush gambling profit for something special. For something I might’ve talked myself out of if I’d come about the money legally. I considered the pamphlet my mom left for me. And inadvertently found the direction of my life. ‘Cabaret’ would be my first theatrical experience.

What advice would you give to

often sassy, resilient strivers who are fighting for their dignity and safety, for love, sometimes to the point of sabotage.

What do you think sets Broadway apart from other forms of entertainment?

The collective experience of sharing a story told through the living human body and soul. The thrilling aliveness of it all.

I first saw theatre on a total whim. When my mom would clean houses, she’d often bring home magazines and things that people had set out for recycling.

aspiring playwrights who are hoping to make it on Broadway and have overcome similar challenges?

This is a reminder for me as much as it is advice for anyone else but: Trust in the validity of your stories and your truth — and advocate for yourself. (Even if it’s with yourself that you must fight to be heard. We can be our own worst enemies. Our harshest critics.) Trust that, in your honest and specific experiences of the world, you have something vital to offer all of us who are also trying to figure out how to live this wildlife.

5
MY EXPERIENCE OF AMERICA WAS THAT EVERYONE WAS FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Tell us about the things you most care about.

I feel immensely fortunate that the story and characters and artists of “Cost of Living” were amplified on a Broadway stage and shared with so many people — but honestly, so much felt like luck. There were many moments when I didn’t think this would happen.

How does it feel to have your work recognized with a Pulitzer Prize, and how has it impacted your career?

I feel beyond honored to have had this play recognized by the prestige of the Pulitzer. I hope it encourages more theaters to produce plays like this. And I hope it encourages people to look at these stories and characters through the lens of the grand and epic. On its surface, the play can seem like a small story of two couples, but I’ve always seen them in the context of something larger. It’s about our need for one another, our yearning for something greater and deeper. For something to connect us, especially in our losses. For something of us to exist beyond death. For miracles.

Your work often focuses on the experiences of underrepresented communities. How important is it to you to bring these stories to the stage?

I began by writing about my friends and family, about versions of myself, and I found that others on the outside would label them as stories of underrepresented communities. That was eyeopening for me — that this was

how these stories would be seen when I was just writing to try to understand myself and the people in my life. But that was in fact what these stories were — “underrepresented” — because certain gatekeepers and producers had historically limited those stories’ reach by choosing not to amplify them. So, with that awareness, I was at times motivated by a desire to remedy in my own writing the dishonesty I’d seen perpetuated in other

portrayals of people like my friends and family. (For example, the quirky immigrant janitor that’s given one scene to offer some pithy, sage, “simple” advice to the hero, never to be heard from again. Or worse, to be the joke of a moment, often for their “broken” English.) I wanted to offer a more complex portraiture and to center these narratives instead of keeping them (us) on the sidelines.
