The Northwest Alumni Magazine is published three times a year by the Office of University Marketing and Communication, the Office of University Advancement, Northwest Missouri State University and the Northwest Foundation Inc., 800 University Dr., Maryville, MO 64468-6001.

The mission of the Northwest Alumni Magazine is to foster connections between alumni, friends and Northwest Missouri State University. The University strives to inform readers of the accomplishments of Northwest’s alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students and to positively position the University in the hearts of its many constituents to increase public and private support. NORTHWEST

DEAR FRIENDS

What a year, Bearcats! The introduction of five professional schools. Profession-based learning continuing to take shape across curricular and co-curricular offerings. Best college in Missouri for getting a job by zippia.com. National championships.

We released a study showing $66.5 million in cost containment and efficiencies during the last four years – and this coupled nicely with the recent economic impact study showing Northwest provides $617.5 million in added regional income.

We completed our campus master plan and moved the School of Agricultural Sciences to the Dean L. Hubbard Center for Innovation. Our Fourth Street Improvement Project was named a “Great Places” recipient for the state of Missouri.

Bearcat confidence elevated support through three major gift announcements. We celebrated our first endowed professorship –the Dennis C. Dau Endowed Professorship in Instrumental Music. The naming of the Michael L. Faust Center for Alumni and Friends was made possible through the support of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation. The naming of the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse came via the generosity of the Hughes Family Foundation – and unprecedented major gift support from the Founding 50 donor team.

Our donors and alumni are so passionate about Northwest, and we are grateful for the support you continue to show the University. Your gifts are a testament to belief in our mission of focusing on student success – every student every day – and our focus on providing a quality education that is accessible and affordable to all. Further, this level of private support is another indicator of Northwest’s strength and culture as an institution known for being safe, trusted, invested and resourceful.

Our priorities remain clear as we accelerate toward developing philanthropic partnerships in academic excellence, agricultural sciences, scholarships and the Northwest Fund. With Bearcat fervor,

Dr. John Jasinski, president with Denise Jasinski ’90, first lady

Northwest Foundation reaches historic levels for contributions in FY17

The Northwest Foundation, the fundraising arm of Northwest, recorded a historic fiscal year 2017, securing nearly $13 million in donor funding while exceeding its goal for the year by 82 percent.

The historic year included three sevenfigure gifts, while the average gift increased 20 percent to about $4,700, outdoing peer institutions by 16 percent. Ninety-four percent of the total funds raised by the Foundation were cash contributions, which also is an all-time high for the organization.

“Our donors and alumni are so passionate about Northwest, and we are grateful for the support they continue to show the University,” Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said. “Their gifts are a testament to their belief in our mission of focusing on student success – every student every day – and our focus on providing a quality education that is accessible and affordable to all. Further, this level of private support is another indicator of Northwest’s strength and culture as an institution known for being safe, trusted, invested and resourceful.”

Among the Foundation’s FY17 highlights, with the support of a lead gift by the Hughes Family Foundation, was the June groundbreaking for the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The Founding 50, a group of lead donors who have committed gifts of $50,000 or greater to the project, grew to a membership of 74 donors whose

gifts represent 99 percent of the dollars raised. Already one of the largest publicprivate partnerships ever in the region, the project also has secured the largest amount of donor funding for a capital project in Northwest’s history.

Scholarship support remains a central mission of the Foundation, which awarded a record of nearly $1 million to 1,146 students during FY17. That is a 13-percent increase from the prior year, while the average award increased by 20 percent to a high of about $850 per scholarship.

Furthermore, the Foundation achieved a 3 percent increase in funding raised through its 1905 Society during FY17. The 1905 Society is the premier giving society for annual gifts, recognizing supporters who make an annual unrestricted gift of $1,000 or more. It has doubled its membership since its inception in 2007.

The average gift supporting the Foundation’s annual giving program increased by 11 percent, while giving by Northwest faculty and staff reached a historic 45 percent during FY17, representing the highest percentage in the institution’s history and a 59 percent increase in dollars raised from FY16. The giving level by Northwest employees places the institution among the top 75 percent of all master’s-granting institutions, while Northwest alumni giving outpaces peer

ANNUAL GIVING

institutions by nearly 6 percent.

In addition to its annual giving programs and donor stewardship, the Foundation’s alumni engagement activities saw success.

The Northwest Alumni Association in February chartered the Black Alumni and Friends chapter as its 21st affiliate group.

The number of Alumni Associationsponsored events increased by 37 percent while alumni volunteer hours dedicated to organizing and hosting events increased by 51 percent from FY16. The Northwest Alumni Association counts its membership as 70,000 alumni and friends of the University.

The Northwest Foundation, a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, is responsible for receiving, investing, stewarding and disbursing private support on behalf of the donors of Northwest Missouri State University for the benefit of the University, its students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Northwest Foundation, governed by a 33-member volunteer board of directors, is staffed by members of Northwest’s Office of University Advancement.

The Foundation’s total assets under management increased 11 percent to $34.9 million while its endowment stands at nearly $24.2 million. In FY17, the Foundation provided $6.3 million to the University to support various needs.

Metrics for events sponsored by the Northwest

changed in FY16 due to efforts focused on events that draw larger, diverse crowds as well as changes to counting practices.

ANNUAL REPORT

The Northwest Alumni Association and the Office of University Advancement’s alumni relations staff continued in FY17 to offer opportunities to alumni and friends to support and stay involved with Northwest. Alumni Relations also includes annual giving and stewardship programs.

The Northwest Alumni Association’s Tourin’ Bearcats travel program continues to be well received. In 2016-2017, alumni and friends enjoyed trips to London and the Pacific Northwest and California, featuring Washington, Oregon and California. The next trip will be to Ireland. For more information, contact the Alumni Relations Office at 660.562.1248.

The Northwest Alumni Association also hosted many great events in 2016-2017. It honored seven individuals at the Alumni Awards Banquet held during the 2016 Family Weekend, and members from the Class of 1966 returned

to campus to celebrate their Golden Years reunion at the 2016 Homecoming.

For the second year in a row, Northwest Night at the K was a sold-out event in June and Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs, also in June, has turned into a summer tradition for alumni and friends of all ages.

Annual giving experienced increases in dollars raised for The 1905 Society. The Northwest Faculty and Staff Annual Giving Campaign, which offers opportunities to give in a meaningful and personal way, continues to outpace peer institutions overall employee giving percentage.

Additionally, the Third Annual Thank a Donor Day event in April provided an opportunity for students and employees to say thank you to Northwest’s generous donors.

The Northwest Alumni Association thanks its volunteers for the more than

These donors have created a planned or deferred gift for the University or Foundation. There is no minimum level of gift required.

James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311, also known at the time as the “Nodaway County Normal bill.” Fighting against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

THE GAUNT HOUSE SOCIETY

These donors have contributed between $500,000 and $999,999 in lifetime gifts.

Born in Staffordshire, England, on April 4, 1830, Thomas W. Gaunt was the son of Thomas Gaunt and Catherine Wooley. He moved to Nodaway County in 1857, where he established his own plant nursery cultivating a wide variety of ornamental, shade and fruit trees. The Thomas Gaunt House was constructed during the 1870s. It has been the home for all Northwest presidents since its donation in 1905 by the daughters of Thomas Gaunt.

THE BIRCHES SOCIETY

These donors have contributed between $250,000 and $499,999 in lifetime gifts.

The first building erected on campus was Academic Hall, now known as the Administration Building. Its commanding location is situated on the highest point of land between Omaha, Nebraska, and St. Louis on the old Wabash Railroad line, 1,163 feet above sea level. Five cut-leaf birches stood at the site like sentinels, prompting faculty and students to describe the Normal School as being located “behind the birches.”

THE BELL TOWER SOCIETY

These donors have contributed between $100,000 and $249,999 in lifetime gifts.

In 1965, Dr. Robert P. Foster announced plans to build a bell tower as a memorial to deceased alumni, former faculty members and those from the University’s family who died representing our country. After years of raising money, ground was finally broken in fall 1970 and the sounds of chiming bells greeted students returning for the fall of 1971.

The original architect’s plans for the campus, which were modeled after Cambridge University, included a large quadrangle, marked on the most northern point by the Administration Building, with all future campus buildings built facing the quadrangle. While the original plans were never realized, the first sidewalk built from the entrance at Fourth Street ran straight up to the front door of the Administration Building and became known as the Long Walk.

THE CORNERSTONE CIRCLE

These donors contributed between $5,000 and $9,999 between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.

The cornerstone of Academic Hall, now the Administration building, was laid Oct.12, 1907, amid great celebration, including a parade. Into the cornerstone, a copper box was placed that included many items from the era such as coins, pictures and a copy of the law that created the Fifth District Normal School. After many heartaches and delays, the building was finally completed in 1910.

THE NORTHWEST CIRCLE

These donors contributed between $10,000 and $24,999 between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.

The Fifth District Normal School opened in 1905, offering two-year programs to educate teachers for the region. The name was changed to Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 as the curriculum began to focus on four-year programs. As its prominence as a regional institution began to grow and the fields of study continued to expand, the name was changed to Northwest Missouri State College in 1949. Finally, as the breadth of its programs continued to increase, especially graduate studies, the name Northwest Missouri State University was approved in 1972. No matter the formal name, the institution has always been known by its alumni and friends as Northwest.

THE NORMAL SCHOOL CLUB

These donors contributed between $500 and $999 between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.

Efforts to bring a normal school - a training school for teachers in the public schools - to northwest Missouri began in 1874. After many years of struggle, in 1905, House Bill 311 and Senate Bill 114 were passed and signed into law by Gov. Joseph W. Folk. For 14 years, the institution was known as the Fifth District Normal School and graduated hundreds of teachers who served the region.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: CALEB LILES

Liles, a freshman biomedical science major from Maryville, is the recipient of scholarships sponsored by the Wilma Hall 20th Century Club, Maryville Kiwanis Club, Maryville Rotary Club and the Maryville Host Lions.

“Receiving scholarships has made my time at Northwest more enjoyable,” he said. “I do not have to stress about paying for college as much, and I do not have to stress about always working to pay for college. Not having to constantly work allows me more time to study and get involved on campus.”

Liles said he chose to attend Northwest to remain close to his home, for its friendly atmosphere and the ability to build close, professional relationships with faculty. “All the teachers are willing to help you if you ask, and in class I am known as Caleb, not a number.”

Through his coursework and membership in the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and the PreHealth Occupations Club, Liles says Northwest is changing him “in thousands of ways” and shaping him into a more well-rounded individual. “Becoming more responsible, a better person, and more outgoing are just three of the many ways Northwest has changed me,” he said. “College is very different from anything else that I have done, which has changed me for the better.”

Liles says he is thankful to the donors who support the scholarships he received and for enabling him to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor and perhaps practicing in a rural community like Maryville. After completing his bachelor’s degree at Northwest, he intends to enroll in medical school.

THE LAKE VIEW CLUB

These donors contributed between $250 and $499 between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.

The lake on campus was created during the tenure of President Uel W. Lamkin. Known as Lamkin Lake, College Pond and now Colden Pond, the area has always been a popular place for students to gather and relax. Included in the surrounding geography are the well-known Kissing Bridge, the Karen Hawkins Memorial Peace Pavilion and Joyce and Harvey White International Plaza, making the south entrance to campus a visual masterpiece.
