ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission standards at Northwest Missouri State University are moderately selective. New freshman, transfer and returning student admissions are based on a combination of academic and personal considerations. Northwest takes an individual, holistic approach to the review of applications. An applicant’s academic accomplishments are a priority and are demonstrated by test scores, grades, class rank and exposure to a college prep curriculum. Admission to Northwest is not viewed as an entitlement based on grades and test scores. Our admissions process combines an examination of academic ability with flexible assessment of an applicant’s experiences and potential.

New freshmen are required to have completed a 24-unit core curriculum (16-unit core curriculum for 1996-2009 graduates) and meet the academic requirements in either Category I or Category II. (See box on pg. 3 or index guide on pg. 9.)

Transfer students who have completed at least 24 hours of transferable, collegelevel coursework must have a 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale) cumulative college GPA in transfer. An ACT score is recommended for placement purposes. For students with a cumulative college GPA in transfer below 2.00, consideration may be given based on professional judgment, and acceptance

may be granted on a probationary basis.

In all cases, a student must be eligible to return to the last institution attended in order to be accepted to Northwest.

ACT scores are required for all education majors.

Transfer students who have fewer than 24 hours completed will be considered for admission on the basis of the freshman admission requirements, in addition to college work that has been completed.

(Students transferring from non-accredited institutions also will be considered as first-time freshmen; credits cannot be transferred to Northwest from a nonaccredited institution.)

FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Take the ACT (SAT is acceptable) on one of the national test dates. Have your test scores sent to Northwest by entering the ACT college code number for Northwest (2338) on the test registration form. Your high school counselor will be able to provide information and assistance.

2. Complete the application for admission in one of the following ways:  Complete and submit your application online and pay no application fee. To access the Northwest online application, go to www.nwmissouri.edu/ admissions.  Complete and submit the paper application on pages 5-7 of this booklet, along with a $25 application fee, to the address below. There is no deadline for admission applications as we have a rolling admissions process.

Have your high school send an official copy of your six- or seven-semester transcript with class rank and GPA at the time of application and a final eight-semester transcript showing the date of your high school graduation.

Official ACT (or SAT) scores must come directly from ACT (or College Board).

Scores reported on your high school transcript will not be accepted.

If you have earned any college credit or dual credit while attending high school, you must request each college or university from which credit has been earned to send an official transcript to the Office of Admissions. Student copies of transcripts or personal copies of test results do not constitute official records or copies.

ENHANCED FRESHMAN SEMINAR The Enhanced Freshman Seminar program at Northwest is designed for the first-time freshman who, after thorough and thoughtful review of academic records and transcripts, is believed to have the potential to be successful at Northwest given the proper support.

Students selected for participation in this program have identified areas of weakness

and must participate in this program in order to enroll as a student at Northwest.

HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENTS Home-schooled students will be considered for admission on the same basis as traditional high school graduates. Submit ACT/SAT results and descriptive information regarding your high school program of study.

In order to be accepted, home-schooled students must meet one of the following criteria: 1. A 21 or higher on the ACT (or SAT equivalent) OR 2. A GED score of 2550 or better (or 255 depending on the date of the test) with a minimum subscore of 510 in each of the five content areas.

GED APPLICANTS Based on the 2002 GED score standards, a student may be considered for admission after receiving an equivalency certification meeting the following criteria: a total score of at least 2550 and no subscore lower than 510. ACT/SAT test scores are required.

2. Request an official transcript be sent to the Northwest Office of Admissions for all college-level work you have attempted from each college or university attended. If you are in the process of completing courses, also have a final transcript sent at the end of the semester to complete your transfer file.

request an official transcript from your high school showing your class rank, GPA and high school graduation date. Official ACT/SAT scores must be sent directly from ACT/College Board.

For students who have earned more than 24 hours of college-level credit, it is recommended that ACT scores be sent for the purpose of course placement. ACT scores are required for all education majors.

4. You must submit previous transcripts regardless of whether those credits will apply to a Northwest degree.

5. Northwest has developed an automated process that defines exactly how your courses transfer to Northwest and meet your degree requirements. Information about equivalent courses from other institutions may be available on Northwest’s website at www.nwmissouri.edu/admissions/ transfer/equivalencies.htm.

If you have been absent from Northwest for one trimester or longer, you must reapply for admission. An application fee is not required.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

If you do not have a Green Card and you are not a U.S. citizen, you must use an international application form. Complete and submit the international application, along with the $50 nonrefundable application fee, to the Office of Admissions.

International applicants must provide untranslated and English-translated secondary school records, college or university transcripts, test results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, a copy of passport and financial sponsorship information directly from ACT or College Board.

STANDARDIZED TESTING

All new freshman applicants, regardless of age or nontraditional status, are required to take the ACT/SAT and have official test results sent to Northwest.

COMBINED PERCENTILE INDEX Figure your class rank percentile by dividing your class rank by your class size, then subtract from 100 percent.

Using the Test Score Percentile Chart, find your ACT/SAT composite test score percentile.

Add it to your class rank percentile, to get your Combined Percentile Index.

FOR EXAMPLE:      

Class Rank = 6 Class Size = 30 1 – (6 ÷ 30) = .80 Class Rank Percentile = 80 percentile ACT Composite Score = 19 ACT Percentile = 42

Combined Percentile Index = 80+42 = 122 122 exceeds the minimum combined percentile index of 100, so you would be admissible to Northwest.

ACT/SAT subscores will be used to determine course placement. Math Skills and Introduction to College Writing are courses designed to better prepare students for college-level coursework. Math Skills is designed as 10 modules aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards and the College Entry Level Competencies. Diagnostic pre-tests will determine which modules/competencies individual students have mastered and which they still need to meet. Once deficient areas are identified, students will be required to complete those associated modules at a mastery level (80% competency) before being allowed to enroll in a college-level mathematics course. Students will only be required to complete work in deficient areas.

REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION Trimesters at Northwest begin in late August (fall), early January (spring), early May, early June, early July and early August (summer). The fall and spring trimesters are 16 weeks long, while the May, June and July sessions are either four weeks or eight weeks long. The August summer session lasts two weeks.

New freshmen attend Summer Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR). SOAR takes place in June, and students must attend a one-day orientation and registration program. In addition, new freshmen attend Advantage. This is a fourday orientation program held in August prior to the beginning of the fall trimester. www.nwmissouri.edu/admissions/ orientation

Transfer and former/returning students have a variety of orientation and registration options. Preregistration for the summer and fall trimesters takes place one day in April, one day in May and two other days in the summer. For the spring trimester, there is a day in late November.

ARTICULATED WEB-BASED MAJOR The Bachelor of Science in Business Management degree program may be completed entirely online. Typically, students transfer into the program after completing an Associate of Arts degree at a partner institution. Northwest has articulated web-based agreements with the schools below. If your situation differs, contact the Office of Admissions for assistance.

DISCLAIMERS  The Freshman President’s Scholarship and Distinguished Scholar will supersede Academic Excellence Scholar or Tower Scholar. Transfer President’s Scholarship award will supersede the Transfer Distinguished or Academic Scholarship.  Undergraduate scholarships are restricted for use during a student’s first undergraduate program.  All scholarship recipients must be enrolled full time (12 Northwest hours per trimester) to receive University scholarships.  Students must be accepted for admission by specified dates before scholarship awards can be offered.  Admissions-based scholarships have an admission application deadline of May 1 to guarantee scholarship awards. UNIVERSITY AND STATE-SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS AMERICAN DREAM GRANT

Through the American Dream Grant, Northwest will fill the gap between the cost of tuition, room and board, primary textbooks and the use of a computer for qualifying students so that the maximum payment the student will need to make during their first two years at Northwest will be no more than $3,500 annually (combined fall and spring terms). To qualify, the student must be accepted to Northwest as a first-time freshman, with Admission Index of 100-199 or ACT of 21-36, complete the FAFSA and all verification documents by April 1 priority date and have an EFC* (Expected Family Contribution) as a result of the FAFSA of 2,000 or less (dependent or independent students). The student must also apply for all federal, state, institutional and athletic scholarships or grants that he or she could be eligible to receive.

After all resources are added together, American Dream funds will be used to fill any remaining gap down to $3,500, the maximum contribution required of the student. All federal and state awarding guidelines will be followed.

MARGUERITE ROSS BARNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Missouri resident 18 years of age or older, enrolled at least half time, but less than full time. Be employed and compensated for at least 20 hours of work per week. To be eligible for the Missouri Minority Teaching Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

Missouri resident who has a composite score on the ACT or SAT in the top 3% of all Missouri students. Enhanced ACT = 31 or SAT = Critical Reading 800, Math 790 will qualify for an annual maximum award of $3,000. The top 4th and 5th percentile with an ACT = 30 or SAT = Critical Reading 770, Math 780 will qualify for an annual maximum award of $1,000. Renewable with cumulative 2.5 GPA and completion of 24 credit hours per year. In addition to a Bright Flight scholarship, students receive a $2,500 Distinguished Scholar Scholarship which renews separately if specific renewal criteria are met. Eligible students are contacted by the Missouri Department of Higher Education.

Northwest Missouri State University is a participant of the Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act program. The Heroes’ Act limits the tuition and fees charged to combat veterans to fifty ($50.00) per credit hour, for any program leading to a certificate or bachelor’s degree. A “combat veteran” is any person who served in armed combat after September 11, 2001, who was a Missouri resident when first entering the military and who was discharged from military service under honorable conditions.

To initiate the process, a veteran must complete the form (each year) on our website www.nwmissouri.edu/ finaid/forms.htm and return it with a copy of his or her DD-214 (initial application only) to: Northwest Missouri State University Attention: Financial Assistance Office 800 University Drive Maryville, MO 64468-6001 The Financial Assistance Office will evaluate eligibility for the Heroes’ Act after this form and the DD-214 are received. Veterans must maintain a 2.50 cumulative GPA in order to maintain eligibility for additional trimesters.

MOST SCHOLARSHIP

Northwest offers a $500 scholarship to first-time freshman students whose families have established an account in the student’s name in the Missouri Saving for Tuition (MOST) program.

Twenty-five nonrenewable scholarships will be provided. Families will be responsible for providing documentation of at least two years participation in the MOST program by submitting a statement from MOST indicating an active account for the student. This documentation, including the student’s Northwest ID number, must be postmarked no later than March 1.

Recipient selection will be based on need, as determined by the results of FAFSA. Please indicate on admission application.

UNIVERSITY AND STATE-SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS NATIONAL GUARD

The purpose of this award is to encourage students to serve their country through the National Guard and at the same time continue their education at Northwest. Students must provide a letter of good standing from their commanding officer as proof of eligibility, maintain a 2.50 GPA and be enrolled on a full-time basis (12 hours or more per trimester) to receive the scholarship. What is the Standard Scholarship Application and do I need to complete it?

The Standard Scholarship Application is intended for most major-specific scholarships (not including any performance-based scholarships).

Students will be able to complete the application on CatPAWS after they have been accepted for Admission, available September 1. Students will be asked to provide activities they have participated in, honors they have received, positions they have held and provide short answers. Each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s completed application, along with the necessary academic information, will be forwarded to the appropriate departments for evaluation and consideration. This standard scholarship application will not be required for the Admissions-Based Scholarships.

If I lose my Distinguished Scholar Award, can I get it back?

Once you do not renew on the Distinguished Scholar Award (below a Northwest cumulative GPA of 3.50 and completion of 24 hours during the academic year), you cannot be reinstated in the Distinguished Scholar program. You may be eligible for the Northwest Scholar (3.30), Tower Scholar (3.40) or Academic Excellence Scholar (3.50), depending on your Northwest cumulative GPA and can continue to float within these scholarships as long as minimum renewal criteria are met.

Can I receive my general University scholarship in the summer?

If you are enrolled full time (at least 12 hours), then you can receive the scholarship for the summer trimester by contacting financial aid at 660.562.1363.

Do I need to reapply each year to continue to receive any of the general scholarships?

General University scholarships are checked for meeting renewal criteria at the end of the spring trimester. If you meet the renewal criteria, the scholarship is automatically renewed for the next academic year. Those students attending summer will have an additional check at the end of the summer trimester. The summer trimester is the final determination in the award for the subsequent academic year. Students may view scholarships awarded through CatPAWS. I was not eligible for any general academic scholarships when I enrolled at Northwest. Are there any scholarships that I might receive the next year?

If you complete 24 credit hours during the fall and spring trimesters with a Northwest cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher, you will automatically receive the University Scholar Award in the amount of $500 ($250 per trimester) for the next academic year. You also will be eligible for the Nonresident Award and either the Midwest Student Exchange Program or the Out-of-State Award. (See pg. 10 or 12.) There also are departmental scholarships available that require an application. (See the website www. nwmissouri.edu/finaid for specific eligibility criteria, deadline dates and applications.)

Will my GPA affect the Pell Grant and loans I receive?

To be eligible to receive federal, state and some private student aid, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward a degree or certificate. To be considered making satisfactory quantitative progress, undergraduate students must pass at least 75% of the cumulative credit

hours which they have attempted and have a cumulative GPA of 1.75 for first time freshmen and 2.00 cumulative GPA for sophomores, juniors or seniors. Failure to meet the appropriate completion rate at the end of the trimester will result in the student being placed on financial aid probation status for the next term.

Failure to meet the appropriate completion rate by the end of the probationary term will result in the loss of eligibility for all types of federal aid until the deficiency is removed.

We are obligated by law to include all sources of student assistance in the financial aid package. In order to receive a subsidized loan, there must be calculated need. With the addition of an outside resource such as a scholarship, the subsidized need may be reduced.

How do I get a job on campus?

Start looking for jobs during the summer before classes begin in the fall. Fall positions are posted to the website beginning approximately the third week of June. Jobs continue to be posted throughout the entire year. Most departments will have a specific application and interview process. Once hired, you are paid for hours worked on a monthly basis.

FOCUS: FINANCES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE BASICS We understand that paying for a college education may seem like a real challenge for you and your family. In order to assist you, we have put together some basic information about the financial aid process and types of aid available at Northwest.

WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID?

Financial aid is money available from federal, state, University and private sources to help students and their families meet college costs. Financial aid will help pay for direct educational costs such as tuition, books and fees, as well as personal living expenses such as housing, food and transportation.

Financial assistance is designed to assist families in paying for the cost of attending college.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Almost anyone who needs financial aid to attend Northwest may receive financial aid. However, pursuant to federal regulations, you must meet the following

requirements in order to be eligible for federal financial aid: n Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen. (International students with student visas are not eligible for financial aid); n Be enrolled in a program leading to a degree or certification; n Have a valid Social Security number; n Be making satisfactory academic progress (as outlined in catalog); n Have a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate; n Register with Selective Service (if required. You may register when completing the FAFSA); n Certify that you will use student aid funds only for educational purposes and that you are not in default on a federal loan or owe money back on a federal grant by completing the FAFSA application.

HOW TO APPLY  Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form, used to apply for all types of aid, is available from counselors in high schools and colleges as well as from the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance at Northwest. Awarded in the form of a fee waiver, this scholarship is for nonresidents who are paying Missouri tax. No separate application is required. A copy of the Missouri tax form verifying the amount of tax paid should be sent to the Bursar’s Office. Students will receive a reduction on nonresident tuition equal to the amount of tax paid. However, a student will not pay less than resident tuition.
