The Northwest Alumni Magazine is published three times a year by the Office of University Marketing and Communication, the Office of University Advancement, Northwest Missouri State University and the Northwest Foundation Inc., 800 University Dr., Maryville, MO 64468-6001.
The mission of the Northwest Alumni Magazine is to foster connections between alumni, friends and Northwest Missouri State University. The magazine strives to inform readers of the accomplishments of Northwest’s alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students and to positively position the University in the hearts of its many constituents to increase public and private support.
Northwest Missouri State University is an

DEAR FRIENDS
The Bridge issue honors those who have chosen to “be a bridge” to Northwest’s future through their generous contributions. On behalf of all students who will benefit from enhanced programs, facilities and scholarships, I thank you.
During Homecoming week, my wife, Valorie and I participated in the public phase kickoff for the Forever Green campaign. This $45 million campaign will raise funds in four areas: academic excellence, student life, scholarships and investments in Northwest. At the kickoff ceremony, we were especially touched by the remarks of Asma Hassan, who told of her journey from immigrant to president of the Student Senate.
Of this fall’s freshman class, an astonishing 46 percent are first-generation students, a distinction I share with them and with Asma. Northwest has long been a gateway to opportunity, and we continue to serve students of modest means. It is why we have intended from the beginning to exceed the campaign’s goal and build our capacity to provide scholarship assistance.
An early project of the campaign was the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse, now in its second year of serving students. Our current focus is raising the remaining funds for an Agricultural Learning Center to be built on the University’s R.T. Wright Farm. It will be a fantastic addition to our fastgrowing professional school and elevate Northwest’s capacity to service Missouri’s No. 1 industry.
Valorie and I are deeply and passionately Forever Green because Northwest was a great launch pad for our future. Today’s 7,000-plus students will someday learn that choosing Northwest was likewise a sound decision, creating yet another generation that is Forever Green.

NORTHWEST LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN WITH $45 MILLION GOAL
With the sounds of the “Bearcat Fight Song” and a chant of “B-E-A-R-C-A-T-S, Northwest officially launched the public phase of its Forever Green campaign Oct. 24.
Conceived and launched into a quiet phase in 2014, the campaign seeks to raise $45 million for initiatives at the University that are centered on academic excellence, scholarships, student life and other donordirected gifts. The University celebrated the launch during its Homecoming week and announced the campaign has raised nearly $43 million to date.
Northwest Foundation Board members are responsible for 21 percent of the total dollars raised.
“Northwest is a steward of place,” Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said. “We’re a steward of this community and the communities we’re serving. We are an engine of opportunity. Our Forever Green campaign represents an important fuel to burn an engine of opportunity.”
Dr. Marilou Joyner ’75, ’78, ’82, the chair of Northwest’s Board of Regents, expressed gratitude to all who have contributed to the campaign so far while reflecting on the reasons she continues to support the University. She earned bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist degrees at Northwest as a non-traditional student. Today, she is chief executive officer, owner and administrator of Cameron Group Care Inc.
“Finding success at Northwest fueled my desire

to have more skills, and for me that meant returning to Northwest,” Joyner said. “The reality is that back then, and even more now, Northwest meets students where they are, regardless if they are from a different country, if they are in need of financial assistance, unable to come to our physical campus and even those that are married with kids.”
Among the Forever Green campaign’s successes was the completion of the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse last year. The Carl ’76 and Cheryl ’78 Hughes, Family Foundation, the Mel ’67 & Valorie Booth Family, the city of Maryville and Nodaway Valley Bank captained the Founding 50, a group of donors giving $50,000 and greater toward the project.
Additionally, Northwest is seeking donor support for its Agricultural Learning Center, an estimated $8.5 million, 29,000-square-foot center to be built at the R.T. Wright Farm.
The campaign will help the Northwest Foundation dramatically increase scholarship awards to students. It also seeks to secure support for University faculty through endowed funds, such as the Dennis C. Dau Endowed Professorship in Instrumental Music, provided through a gift announced in 2017. Scholarship gifts have aided students like Northwest Student Senate President Asma Hassan with achieving their dreams of earning a college degree. Hassan, who was born in Saudi Arabia and came to the United States with her parents as a young child, is a senior psychology and human services major at Northwest. She is among the 38 percent of Northwest’s total student population who identify as first-generation college students.
“I knew I wanted to be a student here as soon as I drove up,” she said. “The smiles, greetings, the recognition of every nation, and the pride that we hold about each student being here is what makes Northwest a home to all Bearcats. Being Forever Green allows me to share the home that I found. It allows me to keep connecting with other people, learning, caring, practicing civility, and most importantly, showing my Bearcat pride.”
Dr. John Jasinski

TRAVEL, VOLUNTEER HOURS HIGHLIGHT
ENGAGEMENT
The Northwest Alumni Association and the Office of University Advancement’s Alumni Relations and Annual Giving staff continued in FY19 to expand opportunities for alumni and friends to support and connect with Northwest.
The Northwest Alumni Association hosted more events in FY19 than in FY18, representing an increase in total programming by more than 9 percent. Also, more than 32,000 Bearcats attended organized events, an increase of more than 18 percent from the previous year.
A few highlights during the 2018-19 academic year included the Northwest Alumni Association Awards Banquet honoring seven individuals during Family Weekend, the Class of 1968 returned to campus to celebrate its Golden Reunion during Homecoming, Northwest Night at the St.
Joe Mustangs and Northwest Day the Kansas City Zoo. Additionally, the Alumni Association’s alumni and friends chapters stayed busy by hosting events and socials throughout the country, and the creation of the Theatre Alumni and Friends Chapter, grew the total number of chapters to 22.
The Northwest Alumni Association’s Tourin’ Bearcats travel program continues to be well received. Upcoming trips to both Greece in the winter of 2020 and New York City, Niagara Falls, and Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2020 have been popular, requiring more seats to be added to both sold-out trips. For more information about travel opportunities, contact the Alumni Relations Office at 660.562.1248. Alumni Relations continues to strengthen its partnership with areas throughout campus,
including the Department of Athletics, Career Services, and the offices of Student Recruiting, Diversity and Inclusion, and Student Involvement. Alumni Relations hosted tailgates, assisted with recruiting Bearcats, attended career fairs, attended the Missouri and Iowa state fairs, and welcomed new students throughout the region at six organized New Student SendOffs.
The Northwest Alumni Association thanks the almost 300 volunteers who provided their time and support during FY19. In total, time volunteered with the Alumni Association was valued at more than $91,000 during the year.
Overall, dollars raised by the Annual Giving program increased by 36 percent from the previous year. Dollars raised through the call center, mailed appeals and online giving are just a few areas that contributed to the increase in total annual giving. Additionally, membership and dollars raised through The1905 Society increased for the third
consecutive year. The tradition of thanking Northwest donors was again celebrated during the fifth annual Thank a Donor Day in April. The event provides an opportunity for students and faculty to come together to say thank you to Northwest’s generous donors.

HERITAGE SOCIETY
These donors have created a planned or deferred gift for the University or Northwest Foundation. There is no minimum level of gift required.
James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311, also known at the time as the “Nodaway County Normal Bill.” Fighting against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

LIFETIME GIVING
THE TURRET SOCIETY
These donors have contributed $1 million or more in lifetime gifts.
As students in the early 1900s arrived at the Maryville train depot, one of the first sights to the west of the station was the impressive turrets atop the institution’s Academic Hall, later known as the Administration Building. Through devastating tornados and a destructive fire, the Administration Building and its turrets have withstood the test of time, standing tall as an enduring symbol of Northwest.

THE GAUNT HOUSE SOCIETY
These donors have contributed between $500,000 and $999,999 in lifetime gifts.
Born in Staffordshire, England, on April 4, 1830, Thomas W. Gaunt was the son of Thomas Gaunt and Catherine Wooley. He moved to Nodaway County in 1857, where he established his own plant nursery cultivating a wide variety of ornamental, shade and fruit trees. The Thomas Gaunt House was constructed during the 1870s. It has been the home for all Northwest presidents since its donation in 1905 by the daughters of Thomas Gaunt.

THE BIRCHES SOCIETY
These donors have contributed between $250,000 and $499,999 in lifetime gifts.
The first building erected on campus was Academic Hall, now known as the Administration Building. Its commanding location is situated on the highest point of land between Omaha, Nebraska, and St. Louis on the old Wabash Railroad line, 1,163 feet above sea level. Five cut-leaf birches stood at the site like sentinels, prompting faculty and students to describe the Normal School as being located “behind the birches.”
THE BELL TOWER SOCIETY
These donors have contributed between $100,000 and $249,999 in lifetime gifts.
In 1965, Dr. Robert P. Foster announced plans to build a bell tower as a memorial to deceased alumni, former faculty members and those from the University’s family who died representing our country. After years of raising money, ground was finally broken in fall 1970 and the sounds of chiming bells greeted students returning for the fall of 1971.

THE LONG WALK SOCIETY
These donors have contributed between $25,000 and $99,999 in lifetime gifts.
The original architect’s plans for the campus, which were modeled after Cambridge University, included a large quadrangle, marked on the most northern point by the Administration Building, with all future campus buildings built facing the quadrangle. While the original plans were never realized, the first sidewalk built from the entrance at Fourth Street ran straight up to the front door of the Administration Building and became known as the Long Walk.
