It’s because of the volunteer support of countless alumni and friends – spirited people like Mark & Cindy Pickerel – that Northwest continues to thrive.

A

fter I graduated from Northwest, my new career and busy family life didn’t allow me to think about my alma mater for many years.

An opportunity arrived in 2003 that allowed me to connect with the campus again, and I was ready to answer the call. I attended a meeting about the formation of an alumni chapter in St. Joseph and quickly became a part of the association. The more involved I became, the more I realized what I had been missing. My wife, Cindy, soon became involved and is caught up in the enthusiasm as well. As members of the Northwest Alumni Association, we have enjoyed being a part of Northwest’s success. We take pride in being associated with Northwest, enjoy the new friends we have made and promote the Alumni Association at every opportunity.

Your last edition of the Northwest Alumni Magazine really hit my “era.” I was on that Horace Mann float in the first ever homecoming parade.

I was in Roberta Hall the night of the explosion.

My parents played important roles that night.

I am most impressed with your magazine. I get the alumni magazine from the University of Missouri, too – and I want you to know you are right in there with the big guys.

The most recent issue of the Northwest Alumni Magazine may be the best one ever. I would not have thought it possible to capture the depth and dynamics of Jim Joy in only four pages, but you did so remarkably well.

I would venture a guess that few, if any, Northwest graduates have had such a tremendous impact as Jim Joy has had on an innumerable number of grateful people who think of him as a mentor, myself included.

Thanks very much for the great job you do on the Northwest Alumni Magazine. I really do read it from cover-to-cover.

In the most recent edition, however, this ol’ sharp-eyed – or nit-picky – Northwest geography alum noticed a couple of items that were inaccurate. On page 21 in the brief article titled “In the year 1905” there are a couple of inaccuracies.

The San Francisco Earthquake occurred in 1906; Oklahoma was admitted to the union in 1907; and New Mexico was admitted in 1912. Calvin Widger taught us well.

In any case, keep up the fine work. It was good to see Pat VanDyke is still alive and kicking. I only took a summer course from her, but I rank it as one of the more enjoyable courses I had (for not enjoying classical literature). And I’ll be interested to hear if an alumni chapter ever gets formed here in the San Francisco Bay area.

Society celebrates centennial

T

he Centennial Society was formed in 2000 when the Univer-

sity’s first formal capital campaign, The Campaign for Northwest, was launched. The financial contributions made by members of this exclusive society help sustain Northwest’s heritage of excellence and ensure enhanced educational opportunities for future generations of Bearcats.

Members of the Centennial Society have been involved in many centennial-themed events this year, including the Alumni Centennial Back-to-School Open House, the Centennial Garden dedication and centennial sculpture unveiling (right), a brunch hosted by President and Mrs. Hubbard, the Northwest Foundation and Centennial Society Tribute Day recognition during halftime of a Bearcat football game and a Homecoming pre-parade breakfast.

Several more activities are on the horizon, including a social and tour of the new Fire Arts Building on Friday, Feb. 3, followed by the Russian Ballet’s performance of “Swan Lake.” There will also be a social at the Alumni House on Saturday, March 4, prior to the Northwest production of “Ah, Wilderness.” Members of the Centennial Society are also encouraged to attend the Centennial Gala on Saturday, March 18.

Educating future teachers has been a 100-year priority

E

ducator preparation has long been a primary focus of Northwest, even from the school’s early years when it was known as Missouri’s Fifth District Normal School. Although the public schools have changed a great deal since those early days, one can gain a bit of perspective through a look at how these schools were organized as Northwest opened its doors. When the first major wave of school reorganizations occurred in the early 20th century, Missouri’s landscape was dotted by one- and two-room schools; some 5,500 of them. I was recently reminded of those early schools when a Northwest alumnus shared memorabilia from his grandmother who had taught in the rural schools of Harrison County. Included were teaching contracts for the 1907 and 1909 terms. Scrawled up one side of the contract was a note from the county superintendent confirming that for the sum of $40, not only would she teach for five months, but she would also perform all janitorial services.

From its early beginnings, Northwest has made it possible for thousands of graduates to be successful in this noble profession. Since 1906, the Horace Mann Laboratory School has been an important factor in making Northwest elementary teachers highly sought after and, when the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education was formed over a half century ago, Northwest was a charter member, remaining continuously accredited to this day.

The institution remains a leader within the state and nationally in addressing the issues challenging schools of the 21st century. From reading instruction (where our Horace Mann program was recognized by the International Reading Association as the state’s model program) to math and science where a series of federal and national science foundation grants provide professional development for those in the field, Northwest continues to lead.

Over the past five years, the institution has become a leader in urban schooling. Through grants from both the private sector and the U.S. Department of Education, we are providing innovative internships in Kansas City schools and preparing so-called mid-career changers to be successful in facing the challenging urban environment. Many Northwest graduates also have served in leadership roles with the state’s department of education. All of these efforts, and those efforts of the Northwest alumni who are featured in this issue, have made contributions to the profession. We are pleased to share their stories with you.

Oh, the good ol’ days . . . pajamas up the flag pole, streaking and panty raids!

I remember when ...

I

was assigned to a roommate, Sherrie, in Perrin Hall in 1961, our freshman year. We hit it off immediately and became a mischievous threesome with Sherrie’s best friend, Inge. In those days, freshmen were much more naïve and much less sophisticated than now, which made it easy to embarrass each other with immature tricks more suited to summer camp than college. In one such episode, Sherrie and I nabbed Inge’s lacy shortie pajamas and ran them up the flagpole in front of the Administration Building. Then we took her for an early morning walk so she could discover the sight for herself. Believe it or not, we’re still friends 43 years after that event!

I

remember moving into Franken Hall before it was finished. In the fall of 1966, we moved in and had to hang our clothes on the curtain rods in the windows and live out of suitcases until our furniture and closets were installed. We had a bed, and that was all! It was like camping out for the first month of college, but we were glad to be in a new dorm with a new dining hall.

remember the panty raid in the fall of ’72 and a certain young man with the initials MP begging me to throw him a pair of mine. I also remember the AKL’s taking their pledges streak-

ing through campus. Living on South First Street certainly gave us ringside seats.

uring my two short years at Northwest, three people made a significant impact on my life and future. Dr. Burton Richie, Dr. Virgil Albertini and Sandy Miller are included in the small group of people who influenced me and made the difference between mediocrity and excellence in my life. I couldn’t have done it without their personal interest and guidance.

I

started at Northwest the year they “switched on” the Electronic Campus. That was the fall of 1987. I remember staying up until all hours of the night sending campus “electronic” mail to people I’d never met. I especially remember leaving one weekend and a friend of mine had figured out how to send numerous messages.

When I got to my dorm room on Sunday night, I had hundreds of messages. The electronic campus was a great thing for Northwest, and I met a lot of friends through campus mail.

Theatre students take show on the road

A group of Northwest theatre

students recently traveled to several middle schools in Missouri and Iowa to present a show to students who don’t have many opportunities to experience live theatre.

“Now that budgets in education are so tight, many times the arts are cut back,” said Patrick Immel, assistant professor of communication, theatre and languages. “A lot of these middle school students wouldn’t get a chance to see a live performance otherwise.”

After receiving a grant, Mike Morris, assistant professor of communication, theatre and languages, developed a playwright contest in which the winning play would be produced by a group of traveling Northwest students.

“Pettycoat Battleground,” written by Morris’s wife, Ramona, was used in the first production this summer.

The University’s contingent included seven actors and seven technicians, all Northwest students. Immel said the experience gave Northwest students an opportunity to work in a setting similar to what they can expect when they first enter the work force. ■

Northwest was well equipped for technical assistance during the distribution of more than 2,200 computers. Beginning in the fall, every student living on campus received a Gateway laptop.

Campus residents receive laptops, wireless access

S

taff members from Northwest’s Office of Information Services distributed more than 2,200 notebook computers just before the start of the fall trimester. The distribution signaled the beginning of a new program, in partnership with Gateway Computers, that provides a wirelessready 405E laptop to every student living on campus.

Dr. Jon Rickman, vice president for information systems, said Northwest is the only university in Missouri currently providing laptops to all campus residents. Only a handful of colleges and universities nationwide have similar programs.

The move to notebook computers is the latest chapter for Northwest’s Electronic Campus, an initiative that made headlines nationwide in 1987 when the University placed a networked

computer in every residence hall room.

Along with their new computers, Northwest students now enjoy wireless access on campus, Rickman said. Wireless “hotspots” have been created in student lounges and common areas in the J.W. Jones Student Union, the B.D. Owens Library, The Station student life center and other facilities.

One important goal, Rickman said, is to provide both computers and connectivity at the lowest possible cost. The total financial impact on students for the laptop program is a $45per-trimester increase in housing fees plus a $1 per-credit-hour wireless charge.

Students living off campus may rent the computers. ■

Northwest expands program for Japanese students

N

orthwest signed a memorandum of understanding this summer with Niigata University of International and Information Studies that brought 12 Japanese students to Maryville this fall for a trimester of intensive study in English and American culture.

The memorandum expands an existing five-week program that has brought Japanese students to the Northwest campus over the last several years. Dr. Charles McAdams, dean of Northwest’s College of Arts and Sciences, said the group of sophomores are living on campus for the entire 15-week fall trimester while enrolled in the University’s English as a Second Language

program.

“It’s a real win-win situation when we have students from other countries,” McAdams said.

“A diverse community on campus means that our students get the opportunity to experience international culture. Plus you’re creating good will. These students (from NUIS) will go home having had a good experience here. They’ll have positive feelings about Northwest and positive feelings about America in general.”

Groups promote, support Northwest in Jefferson City

I

t took years for a group of dedicated citizens to see the fruition of their tireless lobbying for a normal school in the northwest region of Missouri. That school, now Northwest, is 100 years old but it still relies on its friends to help promote its needs to Missouri legislators.

University alumni and friends are encouraged to help support the University’s efforts in Jefferson City through the AdvoCATS or the Northwest Political Action Committee.

The AdvoCATS is an informal support group.

When asked by the University or its governmental consultants, the AdvoCATS commit to communicating personally with lawmakers – by e-mail, phone calls or visits to encourage legislation that will benefit Northwest at the state level.

College deans bestow faculty awards

Six Northwest faculty mem-

bers were honored recently with Dean’s Faculty Awards bestowed by the heads of the Melvin D. and Valorie Booth College of Business and Professional Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Booth College honorees are Dr. Thomas Zweifel, assistant professor of agriculture, for service; Dr. Jason White, assistant professor of accounting, economics and finance, for research; and Dr. Steve Ludwig, assistant professor of accounting, economics and finance, for teaching.

College of Arts and Sciences honorees are Dr. Steven Shively, associate professor of English, for teaching; Dr. Jeff Thornsberry, assistant professor of biology, for service; and Dr. Richard Frucht, professor and chairman of the Department of History, Humanities, Philosophy and Political Science, for research.

Each of the recipients received a plaque and an $800 stipend for professional travel or supplies. ■

The Centennial Gala A Tradition of Excelence

An elegant evening of dining and dancing is in store for those who attend Northwest’s Centennial Gala on Saturday, March 18. The excitement surrounding the event continues to build as word spreads that one lucky person in attendance will win a new vehicle.

The Centennial Gala, A Tradition of Excellence, will begin with a 5:30 p.m. social, followed by dinner, a short program, an auction and dance. The event will be in the Maryville Community Center, just northwest of campus.

“The gala is going to be a first-class affair – a celebration like you’d expect for a university celebrating 100 years of excellence in education,” said Orrie Covert, Northwest’s vice president for university advancement. “The car giveaway just adds another element of excitement.”

Everyone who attends the gala will be eligible for the car giveaway. Once the winner’s name is drawn, he or she will get to choose from three new vehicles – a Jeep Wrangler, a Ford Fusion or a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

All proceeds from the event will go to the American Dream Grant, Northwest’s groundbreaking needs-based financial aid initiative that benefits undergraduates who might otherwise find a college education beyond their financial reach because of their family’s income. Unlike other needs-based programs, the grant pays virtually all college expenses, including room, board, tuition, books and the use of a computer, during the student’s first two years of study at Northwest.

“A college degree is the portal to the American Dream, and I’m proud that the Centennial Gala will support such a worthwhile program,” said Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard. He said the idea for the grant program came, in part, as a way of responding to a decrease in needs-based federal support for students. “We know those with college degrees can expect to earn at least $1 million more during their lifetimes than those who do not have degrees. A bonus is the fact that they also become taxpayers, voters and involved citizens.

We are absolutely certain Northwest’s investment in the American Dream Grant will be paid back to society a thousand-fold in the years to come.”

When today’s Bearcats graduate with an education degree, they’re carrying on a 100-year tradition, but more importantly, they’re prepared to enter a profession that can change the world. Grace Combs, Lorna Simon, Dave and Rozann Seela, Amy Schreck and Andy Schneider are probably well aware of their incredible importance to society, but day to day, they’re not thinking about that. They’re thinking about how to keep kindergarteners from painting the walls or how to explain science to fourth-graders. We celebrate six not-famous, not-wealthy people who, by going to work every day, make a difference in the world without ever making the history books.

For thousands of educators, their passion for teaching and helping children bloomed at Northwest. And what a great place to start! After all, Northwest’s earliest roots began 100 years ago as a Normal School – an institution dedicated to training teachers. In that span, Northwest has changed names, presidents, degrees and even school colors. But one thing remains – Northwest’s commitment to preparing educators.

In the first years, an elementary certificate was awarded to nearly 50 students just a few months after the school opened. That certificate granted eligibility to teach for two years in a public school in Missouri. In 1917, Northwest awarded its first bachelor of science in education. Today, students can receive a bachelor’s, master’s and specialist in education at Northwest. There’s even a cooperative educational doctorate program offered.

Just like the six teachers profiled, many of today’s education students choose Northwest based on the reputation and results from their teachers who were educated at Northwest. By offering oncampus field experiences at Horace Mann Lab School or off campus in the challenging urban environment of Kansas City, the education program has evolved into a state and national leader in addressing issues facing schools of the 21st century.

Northwest, its education program and the teachers it produces are clearly class acts.

Grace Morris Combs ’30 Grace, who recently celebrated her 101st birthday, began her career as the sole teacher in several one-room cou ntry schools in northwest Missouri.

She later taught high school English, gra mmar and literature at several area schools before retiring from the Craig School District.

When did you realize you wa nted to be a teacher? When I was quit e young, people would ask me what I was going to do, and I’d always say I was going to be a teacher. At the time, the only other professions for women were at the post office or the telephone office.

I was the first one in my family to go to college. A family banker loaned me all the money I needed to go to college – $15 0.

What was it like teaching in a oneroom schoolhouse? I walked about a mile to school. That’s how stud ents got there, too. Once I was there, I had to do it all. I was even responsible for pulling together the school plays. We had an outdoor toilet, of course, and a coal fire furnace. The schoolhouse was lit by gas lamps, but we only used those on special occasions.

What do you think about stu dents today? I hear they just don’t cooperate.

Today, I wouldn’t be able to teac h anybody. I just wouldn’t have any control over the kids like I did back then . Years ago, kids were extremely resp ectful.

When did you realize you wa nted to be a teacher? It became clear to me my freshman year at Northw est.

My grandfather was a principa l in Czechoslovakia, and my mother wanted to go to college, but World Wa r II came along and she wasn’t able to go. I was proud to be able to become a teacher.

What are the advantages of teaching in a private school? A private school is smaller, more intimate. You kno w everyone so well, and it’s fun to follow the students in their sports and other activitie s from when they were kindergarteners all the

way through to their high sch ool graduation.

What’s the most challengin g part of being a teacher? The biggest challenge, since I teach K-12 art, is com ing up with different levels of art projects and trying to get a good result from every stud ent. The students like to come to art, and I want to make it enjoyable for them.

What life lessons do you tea ch? I try to teach my students to see bea uty in the world around them. I want them to be aware of nature, to be a happy person and to enjoy life and the things aro und them.

What’s the worst part of tea ching?

Paperwork.

If you had to choose a pro fession other than teaching, what would it be? I would like to have been a tour guide in Europe. ■

Teresa Macias ’97 has

joined Northwest’s Office of University Advancement as the director of developmentmajor gifts. Most recently, Macias was a special education teacher at Maryville Middle School.

In her new position, which began Sept. 1, Macias is responsible for a caseload of prospects and donors in seeking gifts to the Northwest Foundation in excess of $10,000. She also assists in donor cultivation and stewardship programs.

“I’m certainly honored to be working at my alma mater,” she said, “and I’m looking forward to learning about the many aspects of development and meeting Northwest alumni who so clearly believe in and support the mission of this University.”

Ellis Foundation assists Northwest students

T

he Ellis Foundation in Fort Scott, Kan., has confirmed its financial support of seven Northwest freshmen during 2005-06.

“We selected Northwest because we recognized President Dean Hubbard’s vision of making college affordable for low-income families,” said Chris Ellis, the Ellis Foundation’s managing director. “We also found that many rural students are very interested in Northwest.”

The Ellis Foundation provides scholarships to high school seniors from low- to medium-income families in rural America, with an emphasis on single-parent families. The scholarship pays up to $1,000 a semester directly to each student’s des-

ignated college. Since 1997, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships.

“Our mission is to provide today’s youth easier access to a higher level of education by encouraging individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations, institutions and communities to participate with us in preparing America’s future leaders,” said Danny Ellis, president.

McClurg creates lasting legacy for late husband

R

uth Mitchell McClurg and her husband, the late Raymond McClurg ’47, of Tulsa, Okla., have been long-time champions of Northwest and education in general – both through volunteerism and financial support.

In memory of her husband and as a testament to the quality education and programs at Northwest, Ruth has made a $25,000 commitment to create the Raymond McClurg Memorial Scholarship for students studying education, and a $225,000 commitment for the American Dream Grant.

Ruth was born in Burlington Junction, attended College High School at Northwest and later received her two-year teaching certificate from Northwest in 1940. Ruth taught in the rural schools of Nodaway County, and in 1957 received her bachelor’s in education from Wichita State University. After a few years teaching in Wichita, she received her master’s in education from Tulsa University in Oklahoma. Ruth taught elementary school in Tulsa for 20 years, retiring in 1982.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Ray received his bachelor’s in education from Northwest, where the couple met.

Ray was the Missouri state auditor for two years and then became an auditor for Standard Oil of Indiana, later known as Amoco. He retired as the company’s auditor in the late 1960s. He spent the following years, until his death in 2003, as a volunteer for special causes, including his efforts as a member of the Northwest Foundation Board of Directors.

“Ray dearly loved this University,” Ruth said.

“It’s important to me to create a significant and lasting legacy for Ray at Northwest. And really, there’s almost nothing that gives you more satisfaction than knowing that you helped a student along the way.” ■

Porter’s seven-figure gift will help future teachers

A

Society targets internationallyminded supporters A new initiative to strengthen Northwest’s quest for a culturally-rich environment was launched in September when more than 50 international professionals and others from the Maryville area with international interests learned about the new Society for International Ambassadors.

“As the United States’ population becomes more diverse, so has Northwest’s,” said Jeff Foot, coordinator of international affairs.

“More than 50 countries are represented at the University, and our community must be prepared to respond in positive and supportive ways to remain competitive in attracting and retaining a diverse student body.”

“She was so proud to be a teacher,” said Marvin Porter Dixon, her nephew. “She could see firsthand the impact that teachers had on their students and in the community. She wanted to make sure that others could share her pride in being able to make a difference.”

When Porter died in 2002, she left a majority of her estate to Northwest to create the HuntPorter Scholarship Fund in memory of her family and her late husband, Ben Porter. That gift, slightly more than $1 million, helped establish the second largest scholarship fund in Northwest’s history. The scholarships will be awarded to deserving Missouri high school graduates who plan to pursue a career in teaching.

attended training from H&R Block so that she could help the elderly in her community complete their taxes. Service to others was always important to her.”

Porter was born in Hamilton and, after marrying Ben, spent most of her time on their farm near Osborne. She taught math in St. Joseph and other northwest Missouri school districts. She and her husband, who lost their only daughter to cancer when she was very young, moved to Cameron when Ben’s health prohibited him from actively working the land. She continued to make Cameron her home after her husband’s passing. ■

The Contributors to Northwest during the 2004-2005 Fund Year

A

s the University’s centennial year was discussed several years ago, the Northwest Foundation board of directors and the staff from the Office of University Advancement contemplated a first-ever campaign to increase amounts available for scholarships and raise funds for specific needs at Northwest. The resulting goal and time frame – $21 million in six years – perhaps seemed overly ambitious. But today, as the total raised passes $40 million, all Bearcats can marvel at achievements beyond expectations. The capital campaign, with the slogan $21 Million for the 21st Century, will conclude in March, two years earlier than originally predicted, and will raise more than twice the original goal.

But Northwest has an impressive history of exceeding expectations. For a full century now, Northwest has provided an education of unmatched value on the price/quality grid. In recent years, the University has achieved beyond expectations by receiving quality awards, implementing the Electronic Campus, managing an ongoing building plan, winning athletic championships, using the Culture of Quality, pioneering renewable energy and creating the Center of Excellence in Plant Biologics. Before each of these

remarkable steps that have transformed lives, no one could have envisioned the impact each would have many years into the future.

Northwest has more than 34,000 alumni, and 30,000 households receive the Northwest Alumni Magazine. Those alumni and friends of the University have banded together to pledge more than $40 million of support in just four years. In fact, a record was set this past year for cash donations of nearly $4 million. Each year more than 5,000 Bearcats share part of their financial success with the 6,500 current students. The history of Northwest indicates that we will continue to achieve beyond expectations, but we cannot know for certain where the future will take us.

t was a banner year for growth in membership, attendance at alumni events and volunteer support thanks to the volunteer leadership of the Northwest Alumni Association President Greg Wilson ’85 and his board of directors, alumni chapters and professional staff support from Alumni Director Steve Sutton ’71 and Administrative Assistant Brenda Untiedt ’00.

Through nine active alumni chapters, the Alumni Association continues to build membership through its “Each One, Reach One” campaign. Membership numbers grew 14 percent

friends as volunteers and partnerships with offices on campus, including the offices of admissions, career services, athletics and student affairs. The association also provided many opportunities for alumni and friends to remain connected to Northwest by hosting nearly 8,000 alumni and friends at more than 150 events.

The Alumni Association continues to rely on its volunteers for their

contributions. Once again the Alumni Association honored six distinguished individuals at the fall Alumni Awards Banquet. In addition, the association was present at athletic events in Kansas City such as the Arrowhead football game festivities and MIAA conference basketball tournament. Also showing success was the reunion program returning nearly 200 alumni and friends to campus during the Summer Bash and Golden Years Society reunions. ■

Bill Gram ’52 has established a scholarship in memory of his sister, Dr. Mary Rose Gram ’45, for Northwest students entering the field of family and consumer sciences.

Scholarship established in memory of a sister In an effort to honor the memory of his late sister, Dr. Mary Rose Gram ’45, Northwest Foundation Board Member Bill Gram ’52 of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., has made a commitment to fund a $25,000 scholarship in her honor.

Bill, originally from Maryville, was the youngest of three children. His older sister, Mary Rose, graduated from Northwest and later earned her Ph.D. in nutritional research at the University of California-Berkeley. His older brother, Bernard, also attended Northwest.

“Mary Rose enjoyed the friendliness of Northwest,” Bill said. “It gave her a good foundation for going on to get her doctorate while touching so many lives along the way.”

When Mary Rose passed away following a sudden illness in 1976, it had a profound impact on Bill. So much so that he decided to honor his sister’s memory.

“I have established the Dr. Mary Rose Gram Scholarship to honor the life and memory of a sister who was well-loved and achieved a great deal in her field of endeavor,” he said. “This scholarship is to encourage and reward others in the field of family and consumer sciences.”

Upon graduation from Northwest, Bill taught in Missouri and Iowa before attending the University of MissouriColumbia where he earned a master’s in history. Bill began teaching history in the Los Angeles Unified School District where he met his wife, Dorothy, in 1962. He taught history in the Los Angeles Community Colleges until 1969 when he left to attend the University of New Mexico where he earned his Ph.D. in Latin American history. When the couple returned to Los Angeles, Bill continued to teach at Harbor College, and Dorothy became a school psychologist.

“I am grateful for the education I received at Northwest and beyond,” he said. “I cherish the experiences I had as a teacher and will have as a retired educator.

I strive to help others find their personal best through learning and growing educationally.”

Bill retired from teaching in 1995 and has been active in his community in a local Toastmaster’s group, raising funds for his church, traveling extensively with Dorothy and working with the Northwest Foundation. ■

The late Kathryn Belcher Lehnen ’49, pictured with her husband, Marvin, had a passion for education that will long be felt by future generations of Bearcats.

A legacy of learning Kathryn Belcher Lehnen loved education. She lived to learn, loved to teach and never missed an opportunity to encourage others to complete a college education, knowing of the many advantages it could afford them in life.

A 1949 graduate and assistant professor of business at Northwest for more than 20 years, Kathryn first taught journalism and business courses in high schools throughout Nodaway County. She sponsored Pi Omega Pi, an honorary national business education society, until her retirement from Northwest in 1990. The following year, Kathryn married Marvin Lehnen. The Lehnens remained active in the Maryville community as well as at their winter home in Green Valley, Ariz.

Throughout her life, Northwest continued to hold a special place in Kathryn’s heart. She enjoyed long walks on campus with Marvin, viewing the new construction and keeping up on current University issues and with friends and former colleagues.

Although Kathryn died in 2001, the legacy of her passion for education will long be felt by future generations of Bearcats.

In October 2000, the Lehnens used a flexible endowment, a combination of annual gifts and deferred gifts in the form of a trust, to establish The Marvin & Kathryn B. Lehnen Scholarship in the Northwest Foundation. The scholarship provides assistance to those demonstrating considerable commitment to higher education, with preference to non-traditional students pursuing business majors.

In recognition of the years of service she and her first husband, Luther Belcher, had provided to Northwest, Kathryn had established The Luther and Kathryn Belcher Scholarship in 1989. Luther, a business manager at Northwest for more than 20 years, later dealt in real estate as a partner and CEO of Belcher and Long Inc. before his death in 1988. The Belcher Scholarship continues to assist business majors showing evidence of achievement toward completion of a degree, with preference to those majoring in office information systems.

Northwest is proud to facilitate Kathryn Lehnen’s love of education. ■

Scholarships Adopt-A-Bearcat Scholarships

Donors who contributed at least $250 last fiscal year specifically for the Adopt-ABearcat Scholarship Program.

To assist in meeting a critical need for current scholarship dollars, the University created this unique Annual Fund program. Beginning in the 2005-06 academic year, recipients meeting Northwest’s current policies for admission and financial assistance will receive a one-time, $500 Adopt-A-Bearcat scholarship to help offset educational expenses. The scholarships will be awarded in the name of each donor’s choice. Multiple awards are given for those donors providing multiple $250 gifts. These scholarships will prove to be most crucial in providing the additional funding needed for students who might otherwise not have been able to afford attending Northwest. * There were several groups of donors who collectively were able to offer one or more scholarships; thus you might find notifications of such donors’ support for the AdoptA-Bearcat Program within the Green and White Club.

James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311, also known at the time as the “Nodaway County Normal Bill.” Fighting against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

The first building erected on campus was Academic Hall, now known as the Administration Building. Its commanding location is situated on the highest point of land between Omaha and St. Louis on the old Wabash Railroad line, 1,163 feet above sea level. Five cut-leaf birches stood at the site like sentinels, prompting faculty and students to describe the Normal School as being located “behind the birches.”

In 1965, Dr. Robert P. Foster announced plans to build a Bell Tower as a memorial to deceased alumni, former faculty members and those from the University’s family who died representing our country. After years of raising money, ground was finally broken in the fall of 1970 and the sounds of chiming bells greeted students returning for the fall semester of 1971.

Lifetime Giving The Long Walk Society

Recognizes donors who have contributed between $25,000 and $99,999 in lifetime gifts.

The original architect’s plans for the campus, which were modeled after Cambridge University, included a large quadrangle, marked on the most northern point by the Administration Building, with all future campus buildings built facing the quadrangle.

While the original plans were never realized, the first sidewalk built from the entrance at Fourth Street/College Avenue ran straight up to the front door of the Administration Building. Known as the Long Walk, songs were even sung about the long walk.

The Fifth District Normal School opened in 1905, offering two-year programs to educate teachers for the region.

The name was changed to Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 as the curriculum began to focus on four-year programs. As its prominence as a regional institution began to grow and the fields of study continued

to expand, the name was again changed to Northwest Missouri State College in 1949. Finally, as the breadth of the programs continued to increase, especially graduate studies, the name Northwest Missouri State University was approved in 1972. No matter the formal name, the institution has always been known by its alumni and friends as Northwest.

Efforts to bring a normal school – a training school for teachers in the public schools – to northwest Missouri actually began in 1874. After many years of struggle in the state Legislature, local residents were finally successful in 1905 as House Bill 311 and Senate Bill 114 were passed and signed into law

It stayed that way until 1910 when the colors were changed to green and white at the request of the students, to try to differentiate from Maryville High School which, at the time, also had red and white as its school colors.

he St. Joseph Chapter participated in the annual Light the Night Walk at Krug Park.

Jenny Giffin Davie ’02, who works for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, helped coordinate the event in St. Joseph. Northwest alumni from throughout the area joined the St. Joseph Chapter in tailgating and cheering the Bearcats to a 31-21 victory against Missouri Western in St. Joseph. ■

embers of the Central Iowa Chapter gathered in Des Moines at an Iowa Cubs game in July. The I-Cubs took on the Omaha Royals and came out with the victory. Those in attendance also enjoyed give-a-ways and door prizes. In addition, the Central Iowa Annual Golf Outing took place at the Legacy Golf Course in Norwalk, Iowa. orthwest President Dr. Dean Hubbard and Charles McAdams, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, hosted a reception for Japanese Northwest alumni in June in downtown Tokyo.

Hubbard presented a review of Northwest’s latest projects to the group. Alumni enjoyed reminiscing about their days on campus and discussed their current jobs, plans for the future and their appreciation for the international experience they received at Northwest. The group also expressed interest in starting a Northwest Japanese Alumni Chapter. Since the reception, the Japanese alumni have met and elected officers for the new chapter, which is the Northwest Alumni Association’s first international chapter. ■

Travel program expands to include domestic destinations

T

he Tourin’ Bearcats travel program for Northwest alumni and friends is expanding its travel offerings to include both domestic and international trips.

Steve Sutton, director of alumni relations, said instead of offering two international trips a year as in the past, the Northwest Alumni Association plans to offer four, and eventually six Tourin’ Bearcats trips annually to domestic and international destinations.

“Two of the trips will be consistent from year to year,” Sutton said. “For instance, we will offer a ski trip every January as well as a trip during the week of Spring Break to a warm climate destination. Having these trips occur each year will hopefully help Northwest alumni, friends

and students who are planning their upcoming vacations.

A Bearcat ski trip is tentatively planned for January 2007 for three days of skiing the Summit in Colorado at Keystone, Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin.

This summer, the Tourin’ Bearcats will take an Alaskan Cruise June 3-10 to the Inside Passage aboard the Princess Cruise Lines.

I thought all they knew how to do was play football, but they weren’t bad in basketball.”

he Northwest women’s basketball team will look to improve its 13-18 record from a season ago and a seventh-place finish in the MIAA. The Bearcats return 10 athletes from last season as well as four red-shirt freshmen. Seventh-year Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer will welcome three newcomers to the 2005-06 roster. The Bearcats return senior scoring leader Laura Friederich who scored nearly 15 points a contest last year and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau.

Lyons combines interests in home-based business

R

obert “Bo” Lyons ’76 is passionate about two things – the arts and his “child.” It’s only fitting that the name of his business, Lyon Dog Pottery, reflects these interests.

After Lyons graduated from Northwest, he continued his education in Texas where he “worked the streets” and first began selling his artwork.

“The streets are like a big market where students sell their ware and paintings,” Lyons said. “It’s actually pretty fun.”

Several years later, Lyons, who lives in Platte City with his wife and dog, built a studio in his backyard. Lyon Dog Pottery, named after his four-legged friend, contains Lyons’ workspace and a pottery showroom, and his companion, Otis, can routinely be found lounging on the studio’s floor.

With Otis tagging along, Lyons forms conventional pottery such as mugs, bowls and other ware, which keeps

him busiest during the Christmas season. He recently started making urns for animals and humans and was given an award for being one of the founders of the Kansas City Clay Guild.

Although Lyons’ work pleases his many customers, he doesn’t always find satisfaction when he sees tiny bubbles or misshaped products.

“I used to give the pieces with imperfections to friends and neighbors,” Lyons said.

“Now, the bad ones just get the hammer.”

His creativity branches into photographs and music as well. Lyons enjoys taking photographs for weddings, graduations and family portraits.

He and his wife, Karla, have played the harmonica for two years and concentrate on the blues genre. The two are also members of Mensa, a group of people whose IQ scores are in the top 2 percent of the population.

“I have many interests,” Lyons said. “But nothing beats being able to go out to my studio and work with my dog.” ■

Helping others to help themselves

W

As director of the Rachel House, Lori Slagle and the many volunteers she works with help young expectant mothers in the Kansas City area.

hile many young women dealing with an unplanned pregnancy often feel isolated or overwhelmed, Lori Dooley Slagle ’87 and the volunteers at the Rachel House hope to ease that burden.

Slagle is the director of the Rachel House, a non-profit Christian-based, pro-life center that serves young expectant mothers.

She coordinates the volunteer effort in Kansas City North, one of Rachel House’s three locations, and tries to equip volunteers with the skills needed to support the young women who seek help.

“Volunteers are truly a priceless treasure,” she said.

“I’ve learned that people need to be loved whether they are here as volunteers or as clients.”

The 14 volunteers at the Northland location assisted more than 1,300 young women last year.

Slagle said the most rewarding part of helping so many was being able to teach them about

Christianity.

“I continuously try to instill family values in our clients,” said Slagle, who, with her husband, Todd Slagle ’87, has three daughters.

The Rachel House provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and an obstetrician-staffed medical clinic as well as an on-site, free clothing center. The women are allowed to receive help throughout their pregnancy and have their delivery at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. Volunteers provide parenting classes and a listening ear to the mothers.

Because the Rachel House operates on donations, fund-raisers occur often in the Kansas City area. Such fund-raisers include a baby bottle drive (where empty baby bottles are sent to organizations and churches to be filled with money), a motorcycle ride, a 5K run/walk and a golf tournament.

As the organization grows and the need for assistance increases, Slagle sees it as her duty to provide volunteers with assistance and to answer her call as a Christian.

“A top priority is to have those who come to us for help feel the love of God through us,” Slagle said. “They are often dealing with more than an unexpected pregnancy. Our desire is to not only help them through this milestone time in their lives but to see them build on their experience with us and truly change the direction of their lives for the good.” ■

*The American Dream Grant is Northwest’s groundbreaking needs-based financial aid initiative that really is making dreams come true for undergraduates who might otherwise find a college education beyond their financial reach. Students qualifying for the American Dream Grant come from families with incomes of $30,000 or less and must meet Northwest’s moderately selective admissions criteria. Unlike other needs-based programs, the grant pays virtually all college expenses, including room, board, tuition, books and the use of a computer during the first two years of study at the University. Everett W. Brown, 93, a former state representative and longtime Northwest administrator, died July 14 in Kansas City.

At Northwest, Brown wore virtually every administrative hat. At various times – and often at the same time – he served as director of admissions, financial aid, news and information, career placement, alumni relations and extension.

From 1969 to 1977, Brown was assistant and righthand man to President Robert P. Foster.

During his eight terms in Jefferson City as a state representative, Brown served for more than a decade as chairman of the Appropriations Committee for Education and Transportation. He also sat on House panels charged with overseeing legislation relating to the budget, higher education, interstate cooperation and natural resources.

Brown received dozens of honors and recognition including Northwest’s Distinguished Service Award and the Pioneer in Education Award from the Missouri Department of Education.

In recognition of his indelible record of service to the University, Northwest renamed its education building Brown Hall in 1987 and awarded him an honorary doctorate during April 2000 commencement ceremonies. ■

The Northwest Wind Symphony, led by Carl Kling, assistant professor of instrumental music, represents the highest standard of instrumental performance at Northwest and has performed at the prestigious Missouri Music Educators Association convention in 1989, 1992, 1998 and 2001.

The group, along with the Tower Choir, will perform the centennial musical composition at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, in the Performing Arts Center.

Lasting Legacies The James H. Lemon Heritage Society James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from Nodaway County, introduced House Bill No. 311 in 1905, also known as the Nodaway County Normal Bill. Working against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School, as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

The Northwest Foundation created the James H. Lemon Heritage Society to honor his legacy and to recognize the many outstanding alumni and friends who have created a planned or deferred gift which will ultimately benefit Northwest. Today, the Lemon Society has more than 100 members, and it grows stronger every year.

There are a variety of planned or deferred gifts that can be created that qualify the donor for membership in the Lemon Society, including those that will provide a stream of income such as gift annuities and charitable trusts.
