Although the destination of sunny Florida was not unusual for Spring Break, the activities of several Northwest students – kickball, math and manual labor – were anything but typical for college students seeking a retreat from studies and a week of relaxation.

Brigadier General Jim Joy made a career out of being a hard-nosed military man and was known as a “bulldog” on the United States Olympic Committee. He even claims “Marines don’t smile,” but from where he sits now, there’s plenty to smile about.

I believe you out did yourself on the April 2005 alumni magazine. I really enjoyed the centennial issue. It was a good one! Way to go.

I graduated from Northwest in 1949. Last year, I saw a picture of Dr. Ted Weichinger, a 1948 graduate, in the alumni magazine. Subsequently, I found his address and wrote to him. I was his best man at his wedding in 1948. We had lost contact, and I had not seen him since 1948. He wrote to me and said he would be in Oregon and that he and his wife, Betty, would like to visit me and my wife. He came to our house, and we had a nice visit. We recalled old times and some of the mischievous stunts during our college days. It was a most enjoyable time.

The news in the April 2005 Northwest Alumni Magazine hit me like a ton of bricks. “In Memoriam: Wayne Winstead ’72, died January 18 in St. Joseph.”

As a sports reporter, and later the women’s sports editor of The Northwest Missourian, my beat was women’s basketball at Northwest.

Though those two seasons were “rebuilding years” for Coach Winstead, he was always eager to do an interview or take a late night phone call when I was on deadline. And, he always treated me as an equal.

Many will remember him as a great coach, but we should all think of him as a great man.

Wayne, we will miss you.

Dear Editor,

I just read the latest Northwest Alumni Magazine and was very interested in the 100 years young section. I noticed there was nothing for the years ’38, ’39 or ’40. I was shocked because I noticed that in 1980 you mentioned the Hall of Fame was established and in 1998 a football championship was won. The football team of ’38 and ’39 were both undefeated; surely that is on record at Northwest.

I did think of something that I think is important, and it was going on in ’40; Northwest’s president, Uel Lamkin (a very good president), was not a degreed person. Check that out.

riends of Northwest come from far and near. Centennial Society members live as far away as Hawaii, while many live

as close as Maryville. Others, such as Montgomery and Irma Lee Hull ’49 Wilson (originally from Skidmore and Elmo, respectively) have been near Northwest most of their lives.

Montgomery, a retired circuit court judge for the state of Missouri, attended Northwest before transferring to law school. After graduating from Northwest, Irma Lee dedicated her professional career to teaching and working in the accounting field. The Wilsons are active in the Maryville community and are members of the James H. Lemon Heritage Society at Northwest. You can also find them at Bearcat Stadium on Saturday afternoons in the fall cheering on the

W

hat an exciting time to be a Bearcat! Becoming the director of alumni relations at Northwest is both a huge thrill and a great honor for my family and me. My wife, Bonnie White Sutton ’71, and I are both graduates of Northwest, and there is no greater delight than to have our children follow in our footsteps and attend our alma mater. Our oldest son, Brian, is a 1998 Northwest graduate and just completed dental school. Grant, a 2002 graduate who received an MBA in 2003, is an accountant with Ernst & Young in Chicago. Our daughter, Sundi, will graduate in 2006 and is looking to become a high school science teacher.

Our daughters-in-law, Gina Hayes and Jen Gries, are also graduates of Northwest. As you can see, when we have family gatherings, it could also be called an alumni chapter meeting.

As the centennial celebration begins, there is no better time to rekindle your connection with Northwest and its alumni. There are many exciting things going on around campus. On the evening of Sept. 9, the Alumni Centennial Back to School Open House will be at College Park across from the Performing Arts Center. The following day, Sept. 10, will be the dedication of the new Centennial Garden. Also on that day, there will be an unveiling of a centennial sculpture, located just east of the Union, followed by the Centennial Bowl football game versus Truman State. because of the centennial celebration.

On Friday, Oct. 21, the Golden Years Society Reunion will honor the class of 1955. The next day, Saturday, Oct. 22, will be packed with all of the Homecoming Day festivities, including the parade, tours of the ’Ville and campus, and of course the football game against Central Missouri State in the afternoon.

Please make plans to attend as many events as you can during this historic year at Northwest.

When you return, be sure to stop by the renovated Alumni House for a visit.

We are planning to expand our Tourin’ Bearcats program to include domestic trips along with our international trips. We are in the process of increasing our number of alumni chapters in specific geographical areas like Dallas, Chicago and mid-Missouri, as well as establishing a student alumni association on campus.

It truly is an exciting time to be a Bearcat!

And always remember what so many have said in the past and will continue to say in the future, “Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat.”

I remember when ...

remember dorm life: an all-female dorm, black marks if you came in past curfew, male visitors only in the lounge, Coke (the “cola” kind), cookies, card parties and my roommate pulling out her jumbo brush rollers in the middle of the night and throwing them across the room.

remember when one of my Delta Zeta sisters was going to take a bath. She had started the water and gone to do something and forgot about the water running. When we saw a puddle coming out of the tub room door and down the carpeted hallway, we began to find towels to clean it up. She didn’t want to let the house mother know so we kept toweling the water all evening, not knowing that there was an extractor available!

We did have a great evening of sisterhood!

y roommate, Northwest Missourian editor Molly Rossiter, came home after a very late night from putting the paper together somewhere around 5 a.m. She was met at the back door by something she thought was a “nice kitty.” It turned out to be a kitty of the black and white kind and it sprayed her and her enormous boom box. What a wake-up call for the rest of us! (Sorry Molly!)

remember when I arrived at Northwest without a dime to my name and no support.

The man in charge of financial aid at the time met with me and worked around the clock trying to find scholarships to pay for my college – which was not easy. If it were not for this man, I would not be where I am today. I only hope he knows how much his actions have meant to my life.

Athletics have always been a part of Northwest’s history, with baseball and football being the earliest sports. Before they were known as the Bearcats, Northwest athletes were called the Northwest Normals.

I

remember when spring seemed to arrive about the time finals were over. My freshman year the snow drifted half way up to the car doors in the Franken parking lot. I also remember going out to Nodaway Lake with friends and sledding down the dam.

Starting this fall,

Northwest will become the only institution in Missouri to offer an undergraduate degree in marine biology.

The Board of Regents recently approved the new program, and state approval is pending.

The comprehensive program will be grounded in biology while incorporating courses in chemistry, physics, geology and basic ecology. Students will complete two oceanography courses taught at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Miss.

Dr. Kurt Haberyan, biology professor, said the new major will provide a window of opportunity for students throughout the region who are interested in marine biology.

“It amazes me that more schools don’t have this major,” Haberyan said.

“We’ve kept an eye on what students want. We know there are a lot of people who are interested and very passionate about it.” n

Retention rates in national spotlight

N

orthwest’s commitment to quality and excellence recently received national recognition from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

A team of observers from the group visited Northwest, along with seven other state-assisted institutions, to learn more about the school’s exceedingly high retention and graduation rates.

University figures show that almost 92 percent of Northwest freshmen return to complete their second semester. More than 75 percent of those freshmen finish their first 24 credit hours with a 2.0 or higher grade point average.

Northwest also holds one of the nation’s highest graduation rates. Nearly 60 percent of all freshmen graduate within six years – either at Northwest or at another Missouri institution.

“AASCU was interested in looking at us because our student success and retention rates have been so high over an extended period of time,” said Paul Klute, assistant to University President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard. “They want to benchmark what we do as a university to help our students achieve those outcomes so they can share that information with other institutions.”

In addition to graduation and retention rates, the report also praised Northwest’s “institutional culture” for being a key element in promoting student success.

The report attributed that success to faculty and staff ’s commitment to creating a family environment among themselves and students. n

Computer students explore world of robots

A

fter a summer in the theaters watching the latest “Star Wars” movie, it’s no surprise the students in Dr. Dean Sanders’ Topics in Computer Science: Introduction to Robotics class are building robots.

While the machines may not be as smart as R2-D2, they can roll, walk, crawl, measure distance, sense light and take pictures. One model even plays the drums.

Using components from the Lego MindStorms robotics system, Sanders’ students are assembling and programming the robots to perform a wide range of tasks.

“We’re really only limited by our imaginations,” said Sanders, a professor of computer science and information systems. “The idea is to teach a number of computer science topics, plus just having some fun. We’re looking at several areas – networking, operating systems, some artificial intelligence.”

Most of the students are using a programming language to write software for their robots, which can carry multiple motors and sensors.

The technology is akin to that used to operate the Mars rovers, Sanders said.

Students write programs on a computer then download them to a microprocessor, known as an RCX, that forms the “body” of the robot.

Physically constructing the robot is like putting together regular Legos: gears, arms, wheels, pulleys and other tools simply snap on. n

President, student swap for a day

T

here were more than a few stares and whispers from students when Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard strolled into an accounting class with a sweatshirt and backwards ball cap and started to take notes. Likewise, during this spring day, personnel in the president’s office were in for quite a shock.

Bryce Lemke was the winner of Northwest’s “President for a Day” drawing sponsored by the University’s Mortar Board organization. As a result, the two men traded roles for the day.

Although Lemke doesn’t have aspirations of becoming a university president, he entered the contest because he wanted to explore the administrative side of college life and reintroduce Hubbard to the classroom.

As the temporary president, Lemke dealt with reporters for nearly five hours and attended meetings with department heads. He was also able to offer input on an upcoming expansion project.

“Going in, I thought Hubbard got to kick back all day with his feet on the desk, but at the end of

the day I realized that he does much more,” Lemke said.

Lemke wasn’t the only one to experience a change of venue. Hubbard attended a tutoring session and completed quizzes and class assignments for Lemke’s accounting and reporting classes.

“I enjoyed looking at the world through the eyes of a student,” said Hubbard, who has agreed to similar swaps in the past. “Taking notes, trying to organize things was very interesting. I read the book ahead of time so I knew what the topics were all about, but I learned a lot. Hopefully, I didn’t wipe out his grade point average.” n

Florida spring break nets sore muscles, lifetime memories

N

orthwest students found a new destination for their spring break when an opportunity to volunteer presented itself through the University’s Office of Student Affairs and the Volunteer Center.

The University’s first Bearcat Break Away alternative spring break took 39 students and four Northwest employees on a 20-hour bus ride to Winter Park, Fla., to volunteer helping about 100 preschool through high school-aged youth from lower-income homes.

The experience was sponsored through ESTEEM, Enhancing Self-Sufficiency Through Education, Employment and Multiculturalism, a non-profit organization in Florida.

“The kids in Florida were warm, enthusiastic and trusting from the first moment we met them,” said Meredith Naughton, who coordinated the event at Northwest.

Northwest students served breakfast and lunch

to the children, played games and taught them about all aspects of life including sportsmanship, listening and respect.

“Some of our best time was spent reading with the kids, who showed eagerness for hearing stories and for practicing reading themselves,” Naughton said.

BBA students labored more on some days than others. One mission was to spread more than 40 tons of mulch onto playgrounds where recent hurricanes caused damaged.

“Bearcat Break Away opened my eyes to a lifestyle I was not used to,” junior Lauren Skoch said. “It also inspired me to want to give of my time, medicines and knowledge to underprivileged communities when I become a physician.” n

Grant aids in kidney research An effective therapy for

an inherited kidney disease could prevail from the research of one Northwest associate professor of chemistry/physics.

Dr. Rafiq Islam will use a $198,000 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases in his efforts to help scientists treat autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (AKPKD). The grant will support him over the next three years in his research on a gene whose mutation causes AKPKD. The grant means Islam can buy equipment for doing cutting-edge research. A number of undergraduate and Missouri Academy students will participate in his research.

AKPKD occurs in children and adults and affects nearly one in 1,000 Americans. It slowly progresses into a condition that eventually results in end-stage kidney failure.

“I hope to obtain some important and crucial results that we can publish,” Islam said. “This is very important not only for future funding but also to show the funding agencies that we at a smaller, undergraduate institute also can do things that are important.” n

Northwest awards first online master’s degree

A

water quality specialist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico has become the first Northwest graduate student to receive the University’s online master’s degree in geographic information science.

The master of science in GIS is the first completely online graduate degree offered by Northwest. Chris McLean wrapped up two years of work this spring by successfully defending his thesis and passing a comprehensive examination – all via computer.

“It was easy from a professional standpoint because I could schedule my time to work on this,” McLean said. “I also received a good understanding of GIS, a nice, broad-based overall picture.”

Geographic information science is a rapidly growing discipline concerned with creating, managing and analyzing spatial data.

“This is an historic occasion for the university because the coursework, the thesis process and the comprehensive exam were all completed online,” said Dr. Gregory Haddock, chairman of the Department of Geology/Geography at Northwest.

“It’s a first for Northwest, and it’s exciting that it occurred during our centennial celebration year.”

When Northwest began the online GIS program in fall 2003, it was the first such offering in the country. It remains one of only a handful of similar academic opportunities nationwide. In less than three years, the number of students has grown from 17 to more than 70. n

Centennial celebrations begin with time capsule opening

A

lead box full of letters from student organizations, several Greek composite photos and newspaper articles – as well as a funky tie worn by professor emeritus Dr. Roger Corley – resurfaced March 30 as Northwest’s family gathered to launch the University’s centennial celebration.

In addition to current students and employees, alumni from the 1980s and retired faculty returned to campus to laugh and remember the items sealed in the time capsule 23 years ago.

Among those in attendance was former Student Body President Linda Borgedalen Baer ’83 and Vice President Becky Claytor Simons ’83 who, along with the current Student Senate President Chase Cornett, showed off the capsule’s contents to the crowd.

“It’s fun to see these things, to see what people looked like back then with the big hair, the short shorts and the high tube socks,” Baer said. “It’s fun to see how styles and things have changed,

and really it wasn’t that long ago.”

The contents will be on display at the University throughout the centennial year and can also be viewed by visiting www.nwmissouri.edu and clicking on the centennial link. The original contents will be returned to the bottom of the capsule and the new artifacts placed over them. The capsule will be reburied in August 2006 and will remain sealed until Northwest’s bicentennial in 2105-2106. n

Retired faculty stay active in Maryville community PEGGY MILLER

P

eggy Miller loves primitive antiques. So much so that she travels to antique malls and shops searching for anything from blanket boxes and trunks, to kitchen cupboards and wash boards.

She even refurbishes some of her finds.

“A friend and I like to take something that’s junky and make it pretty,” said Miller, Northwest’s former coordinator of Early Childhood and Child Development.

Some of her refinished wooden boxes, crock benches and sugar buckets as well as an old hen’s nest are on display in a booth at The Bookstop Antique/Used Book Mall in Maryville where she works twice a week.

Her love for antiques is one of the many things she keeps busy with in retirement. She also tutors and does volunteer work.

“I haven’t had a day that hasn’t been a happy day,” said Miller, who retired three years ago after a 35-year career at Northwest. “Every single thing I do now is by choice.”

Every week, Miller tutors adults through the

Adult Education and Learning program at Northwest, including teaching English as a Second Language students and general education degreeseeking students.

Soon she will volunteer her time to assist the Children and Family Center of Northwest Missouri, and she also helps at the New Nodaway Humane Society, the Maryville Public Library’s Books-on-Wheels program and the Northwest Foundation with special projects for the College of Education and Human Services.

Looking to the future, Miller said in the next five years she wants to do more traveling along with working to improve her yard and flowers.

She also wants to learn how to hunt and sell antiques on e-Bay. n

A little dust or a scratch doesn’t bother Peggy Miller, who believes the enjoyment of antiquing comes from the “hunt” and the restoration.

H

e may not be coaching on the football field, but former Northwest coach and assistant athletic director Bob Gregory always finds time to maintain his connection with the University.

Gregory, a King City native, graduated from Northwest in 1942 and began teaching at Northwest in 1954. He taught several physical education and health courses and coached many sports: basketball, track, swimming, tennis, football and golf.

“I was a jack-of-all-trades and probably not a master of any,” Gregory said about his coaching career.

Gregory retired in 1985, and he and his wife, Helen, have spent the bulk of their retirement years traveling the world. They’ve traveled through the United States as well as to Europe, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France.

“I’ve been to Europe three times, and my wife has been six times,” Gregory said. “Traveling is

a big part of my retirement.”

Although heart surgery has forced him to limit his traveling lately, he keeps in contact with his friends and enjoys going to Jefferson City and Florida to visit his grandchildren.

Nevertheless, nothing stops Gregory from attending every home Bearcat basketball and football game.

Gregory also is an active Mason, and every day he can be found at his favorite coffee shop in Maryville visiting with friends. n

The coffee’s hot and the camaraderie can’t be beat, so there’s no stopping Bob Gregory from his daily visit to the local coffee shop.

Let’s be clear about something: Jim Joy is a man of his word.

Mission: Marines

As a retired brigadier general from the United States Marines Corps, he’s one of those true Americans who has put himself in harm’s way to protect his country. He’s an old-fashioned, Missouri-born, tell-it-like-it-is guy.

But don’t believe him when he says “Marines don’t smile.”

For one thing, he has many, many reasons to smile. He has a wonderful family. He’s healthy, retired and plays golf three days a week. He survived two tours and two ferocious attacks in Vietnam. He was called upon by the President of the United States to take charge of a situation following one of the nation’s darkest moments. He was the leader of a multimillion-dollar organization. He served nearly 20 years on the United States Olympic Committee.

Joy’s life has been a series of challenges – from professional to personal – that brought him to a place where, really, he has plenty to smile about.

im Joy loves sports, but as a kid growing up in the small town of Conception Junction, he never played on a football team. But his road to the Marines, where he would have a distinguished career, would begin on the gridiron.

During high school, Joy was such an athlete that he caught the attention of Bearcat football coach Ryland Milner who recruited him to play for Northwest. Joy, at 5-foot-7 and barely 150 pounds, accepted the offer and played for three years.

“I worked on the railroad in the summer and told the foreman I wanted to carry the jack and the handle all the time so I could get in shape,” he said. “Everyone laughed because it was more than 100 pounds! They thought I’d last maybe three days. Well, I lasted all summer, and needless to say, I was in excellent shape.”

Joy didn’t receive much playing time as a Bearcat, but it didn’t stop him from receiving a little ribbing from his teammates.

“I guess it was a combination of my Indian ancestors and the sound I made every time I was hit on the football field, because they gave me the nickname Chief Ugh,” he said.

The “chief” knew he wanted to become a high school coach, but first he was determined to become a Marine.

“Several of the Bearcat football players I watched before I came to Northwest were Marines, including Paul Tobin who was a co-captain, and about a dozen of the guys on the team when I was a freshman were in the Marine officer program,” Joy said. “There was no draft going on at the time, but the Marines struck my fancy – their spirit, their determination.”

After he graduated from Northwest in 1957, Joy, who later earned two master’s degrees, intended on staying in the military for three years. He miscalculated by 28 years.

oy’s first tour in Vietnam was in 1966-67 as a company commander.

In 197172, he returned to Vietnam as an adviser with the Vietnamese Marines where he was involved in two heavy battles.

His involvement in the Easter Offensive (when the North Vietnam ese Army launched a large-scale attack on the South) is chronicled in the book “The Easter Offensive, The Last American Advisors.”

“In a three-day period, all of the Vietnamese Army regiments were overrun, and then our Vietnamese Marine brigade had to evacuate our fire bases and make about a 25-kilometer march over very rugged terrain,” Joy said. “It was a very harrowing experience, and we lost half of the brigade – they were either killed or captured.”

After being reequipped and receiving new personnel, Joy and his comrades were thrown back into battle.

“Believe it or not, the same thing happened again just a few months later,” he said. “We had to start a counter attack and the next thing we know, there’s no one between us and the North Vietnamese and the DMZ. All of the Vietnam ese Army units fell back and left our brigade facing the North.”

Joy and his troops had to evacuate again, and things went from bad to worse.

“We were under a tank and infantry attack,” he said. “There were only about five of us Americans left between North Vietnam and South Vietnam when we were finally extracted by helicopter under a very, very dire situation. We really thought we may be going to the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ and joining the other America ns whose planes we saw being shot down.”

Joy is confident one of the reasons he advanced through the military ranks to brigadier general is due to his heavy combat experience. This experie nce would be put to use when he received an assignment from the Commandant of the Marine Corps General P.X. Kelley and President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

“You have defining moments in your life,” Joy said. “I’ve had several of these – Patty’s bad illness, the big battles in Vietnam, and in 1983 when I was selected by President Reagan to go over and take charge in Lebanon following one of the darkest days in the history of our country when 241 Marines were killed.”

Before departing for Lebanon to secure the safety of the U.S. military and to complete his mission, Joy and his wife met with President Reagan.

“He gave me quite a pep talk,” Joy said.

“It was like talking to your grandfather. He said ‘Jim, I’m very proud of you, and we don’t want to lose any more Marines over

there.’”

Joy had his orders, but he didn’t know what the future held.

“The situation in Beirut was the most challenging thing I’ve ever had to undertake,” he said. “If you look at some of the pictures from Beirut, you can see that I’m very tired. I was working 20 hours a day for six months solid. I later learned my men called me “Raccoon Eyes” because I had such dark circles under my eyes. When you’re in combat, you may have a battle that lasts a couple of days, but you don’t have battles that last six months where you’re under excruciating pressure. It was hardball.”

When Joy and his troops left six months later – although difficult for Joy to accept – 12 more Marines had been killed.

Because of his stellar service, the president of Lebanon awarded him the Order of Cedar, the highest award the government gives to any foreign officer. He also received the U.S. Department of Defense Superior Service Medal.

U.S. Marines were in Lebanon to secure peace to the city of Beirut and to prevent the area from becoming a battlefield following a civil war among the Christians, Muslims and Palestinians. On Oct. 23, 1983, a truck packed with explosives blew up a Marine barracks at Beirut International Airport killing 241 Marines.

In November 1983, Joy was appointed the first commanding general of the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit in Lebanon, and in February 1984 he became the commander of the Joint Task Force, Lebanon.

oy’s passion for his profession continued following his retirement from active duty in June 1988 where he had most recently been spearheading the Marine Corps recruiting effort. For the next eight years, he served as the director of the Marine Corps Morale Welfare and Recreation programs.

“I took off my uniform one day and put on a suit the very next day, but fortunately, I was able to work with the same people I had worked with for the previous 31 years,” he said.

Joy, who now had to learn his way around Capitol Hill, had a big job ahead of him, constructing a new organization by putting four separate entities into one large $750 million business, the MWR. “Funds were available for things like libraries and fitness centers because they’re tied into the mission of developing Marines,” Joy said, “but 90 percent of my budget was from nonappropriated funds. Money for things like golf courses, marinas and stables had to be generated the old fashioned way – by earning it.”

Also about the time Joy retired from active duty, the Olympic Committee was looking for volunteers with experience managing big organizations and big budgets, and Joy’s leadership skills caught the committee’s attention.

He also knew how to speak his mind.

“It all boils down to common sense and being able to articulate your position,” Joy said. “With the Olympics, I kind of had the reputation of being a bulldog, but at the same time I’m an eternal optimist. I think it goes back to my days on the battlefield during Vietnam and Lebanon. Even though there were some very difficult situations, I never gave up or thought I wouldn’t make it.”

Likewise, Jim and Patty Joy have never given up on their devotion to each other and are looking forward to their retirement years.

“I’m going to phase down my consulting business and take care of ‘grandma,’” Joy said. “When you’ve been as busy as I have, it’s hard to just stop. I’ll still be active and keep my fingers in the Olympics. Patty and I will do some traveling and enjoy the grandkids, and I’ll continue to golf, hunt and fish.”

After a lifetime of service, Joy, a true American and dedicated family man, has a lot to look forward to. And that’s certainly something to smile about. n

Willis takes whittling to a new level.

Claus becomes wood carver’s cause

V

isit Jim Willis’s ’70, ’76 Kansas City North home and it won’t take long to figure out his passion.

Just a few inches from his front door, a large display case showcasing some of his award-winning prized possessions and accomplishments rests along his living room wall.

The case is packed with shelves featuring hand-carved figurines such as small animal carvings and miniature carousel figures.

But tucked away on an open shelf in his kitchen is where you’ll find his more interesting projects – 15 hand-carved Santa Clauses. Most of the Santa figures bear some sort of significant meaning, including one he carved for his mother who passed away. Others he’s crafted for contests and friends.

Just last year, he won Wood Carving Illustrated magazine’s “People’s Choice” award for one of his carved Santa Claus figures. He has also received several first place and best of show awards in many other local woodcarving contests.

Although the Santa figures and other carvings represent the bulk of Willis’s work, they only tell half of his 40-year carving history.

Willis became interested in carving during his early childhood. Armed with a pocketknife and a passion for the outdoors, he would carve whenever he had a chance.

“I carved as a kid, just whittling on things,” Willis said. “It was something that I found enjoyable, something that I liked to do.”

It wasn’t until his senior year at North Kansas City High School that he received his first taste of full-scale woodcarving. Willis’s instructor chose him and another student to carve a full-scale version of their high school crest.

Using a pocketknife, the two spent weeks completing the project. They donated the plaque to the school, where it still hangs today.

Shortly after the school project, Willis reached another milestone in his carving career – his first

After graduating from Northwest with an industrial arts degree, he began teaching and coaching at North Kansas City High School.

It was only a matter of time before he began teaching the same crafts class that had nurtured his love of carving.

While teaching, Willis ventured into the arena of showplace carving. He examined pieces at a woodcarving show in Kansas City, and he immediately knew that he wanted to participate.

“I saw some things that were just unbelievable artwork,” he said. “There were others that were on the other side of unbelievable, too. And I thought to myself, I can certainly carve at that level, and maybe even better.”

After nearly a half a century of advancing his craft, he’s carved nearly 500 original wood pieces and has experienced his share of emergency room visits for carving accidents, but it hasn’t diminished his love for his medium of choice.

“Some guys like to work in metal, but it’s just so hard and cold,” Willis said. “But with carving and woodworking, it’s an accomplishment.” n

Official Opening of the Centennial Year

N

orthwest’s centennial officially begins the weekend of Sept.

9-10 with an alumni reunion, garden dedication, the unveiling of a specially commissioned sculpture and a football game.

Centennial activities begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, with the Centennial Alumni Back-to-School Open House at College Park. The event is free, and food will be available for purchase. Encore performance featuring a lineup of illusionists and magicians will follow the event at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets will be available at the door beginning at 6 p.m.

Saturday’s events begin at 9 a.m. with the dedication of the Centennial Garden between North and South complexes. In addition to providing a gathering spot, the garden marks the location of the Quads residence halls, which were home to hundreds of Northwest students until the last of the structures was razed in the 1990s.

The centennial sculpture unveiling is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday on the east side of the J.W. Jones Student Union. Don Beeson, chairman of the Northwest Foundation Centennial Committee, will speak.

1979 On July 24, 1979, the face and future of Northwest changed forever. An electrical malfunction sparked a raging fire that destroyed 60 percent of the Administration Building. The campus and community rallied behind the recovery and subsequent reconstruction efforts.

With emergency funds from the state, the grande dame of Northwest was renovated, while Wells Library became Wells Hall, and the Performing Arts Center and B.D. Owens Library became part of the campus.

Just after midnight on April 28, 1951, a gas tank exploded behind Residence Hall, causing a fire that was visible from 70 miles away. One woman, Roberta Steel (shown at right), died more than a year after the fire, and as a result, Residence Hall was renamed in her honor. Legend has it that Roberta playfully haunts the building to this day.

CENTENNIAL DISPLAY CASES lumni returning to campus during the centennial year will want to visit the J.W. Jones Student Union, the Administration Building and the Alumni House to view items from the University’s archives.

In addition, items from the 1982 time capsule are on display on the first floor of the B.D. Owens Library. They will remain there until fall 2006 when new items will be added to the capsule before it is interred beneath the library plaza.

Plans call for the capsule to remain underground until Northwest’s bicentennial in 2105-2106. n

fter graduating from Northwest in 1955, J.D. Hammond’s career in higher education has spanned 40 years.

He retired in 1999 as the dean of the Smeal College at The Pennsylvania State University where he played a key role in securing a $10 million gift and also led a $30 million capital campaig n.

During that time, he also instructed and supervised the work of countless students, and his professional peers elected J.D. Hammond him to the presidency of The American Risk and Insurance Association, The Risk Theory Seminar and The International Insurance Society.

In his 30 years as a member of The International Insurance Society, Hammond interacted with many executives from insurance and related financial service companies in an educational setting. As a result, the power of international business education became clear to him.

He and his family have created the J.D. Hammond Family Scholarship in International

Business Fund. The scholarship will be used by qualified Northwest business students to offset overseas costs associated with any international business study program arranged through the University and considered part of the recipient’s academic program.

“Northwest is fortunate to be able to call on one of its own to help out the Booth College of Business and Professional Studies,” said Dr. Tom Billesbach, dean of the college. “J.D. knows what it takes for students to be successful in today’s economy, and now he’s stepping up to make that happen. In fact, he’s inspired us to pursue federal funding opportunities to significantly increase the internationalization of our business courses.”

Hammond, who received Northwest’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1976, remains professionally active with the private sector and also serves on the Northwest Foundation Board of Directors. He and his wife, Marian, live in State College, Pa. n

Lifelong educators support scholarships initiative

B

ill ’52 and Betty Lou Egger (attd. ’46-’48) Owens created a $10,000 scholarship not only to honor friends who made a special impact on their lives, but to also impact Northwest students from the Hopkins region where they were raised.

After serving in the Army and graduating from Northwest with a teaching degree, Bill began his teaching career in Graham, Mo., and Atchison, Kan. By 1958, he had earned his master’s degree in school administration, retiring from the Wheaton, Ill., school system in 1984.

Much of Bill’s career was spent as an elementary school principal and sixth-grade teacher.

Betty taught in five one-room schools throughout Nodaway County, raised her daughters, Brenda and Beth, and later earned her teaching degree in 1970. She then taught fourth grade in Bensenville, Ill, and retired from teaching in 1989. The couple now lives in Beverly Hills, Fla. The Owens’s pursuit of educating others has never wavered, even after retirement. Establishing The Bill and Betty Lou (Egger) Owens Family Scholarship in memory of Albert Owens, Vance Geiger, Larry Melvin and Paul Gates is their way of honoring mentors and making a lasting, educational impact on today’s students. n

A better breed of Bearcats gather in Cincinnati

T

he Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati aren’t the only Bearcats in the Cincinnati area. In May, 20 Northwest alumni in the region gathered to reconnect with Northwest and to meet other neighborhood Bearcats.

Bill Price ’60 hosted the Northwest Bearcat Bash at his business, Empower MediaMarketing, in the Mt. Adams district. Alumni then attended the Taste of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Reds baseball game.

Because there are nearly 200 alumni living in the Cincinnati region, Price hopes that alumni will step up to help get a chapter started there.

“There are so many things that we can accomplish as a group to not only assist in Northwest’s mission but also to have one heck of a fun time in Cincinnati,” Price said.

The alumni were joined by Bobby Bearcat, and everyone enjoyed a tailgate that included ribs prepared by Ryan George ’00 and Dave Snider ’80, ’83. The men of Sigma Tau Gamma and Phi Sigma Kappa gathered for their annual happy hour at the Landing in Liberty on April 22.

wo longtime Northwest educators were recently honored for their outstanding service to the University’s College of Education and Human Services. JoAnn Marion and Dick New were the guests of honor as Northwest alumni and friends paid tribute to the pair at St. Joseph’s Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Marion received the 2005 Service to Northwest Award. She joined Northwest in 1968 and retired in May as an associate professor of curriculum and instruction and a teacher at Horace Mann Lab School. New was presented the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. He came to Northwest in 1967 and retired in 1996 as the coordinator of outreach education. n

Larry Mannasmith ’71 s high school choral music director at Red Oak (Iowa) High School, Larry Mannasmith has dedicated the past 35 years to music in the public school system. He has directed more than 30 musical theater and stage plays. He is a member of the Music Advisory Panel of the Iowa Arts Council and the Touchstone Arts Council, of which he is a board member and past president. In June 2004, his choir was selected to be the Iowa representative at the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Jon Rickman or nearly 30 years, Dr. Jon Rickman, vice president for information systems, has provided ultramodern electronic services to Northwest. He was responsible for the design and implementation of the electronic campus and has co-authored two books, The Electronic Campus and Electronic Campus and Beyond. Rickman also was a founding governor of the MOREnet statewide data voice and video network for Missouri.

Vinnie Vaccaro ’73 innie Vaccaro is a branch manager for Commerce Bank in Kansas City. During his undergraduate years, he was the first Bobby Bearcat, an emcee of the Homecoming Variety Show and the campus station manager at KXCV. He was Northwest’s alumni director for several years and the cheerleading sponsor in the 1970s and 1980s.

Vaccaro served 13 years on the board of directors of Kansas City’s The Dream Factory, eight as president.

Earle I. Moss arle I. Moss, who is being honored posthumously, came to Northwest in 1954. During his time at Northwest, he was director of bands, led the jazz band and was the faculty adviser for Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity. He also started the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity at Northwest. He retired in the late 1980s and remained dedicated to Northwest until he passed away in 2003. n

Spring wrap-up

The softball team ended its season tying the school record for wins at 34-27 overall. The Bearcats earned the No. 8 seed in the MIAA tournament and split two games before bowing out in the second round. Four Bearcats were included on the All-MIAA Team.

The baseball team ended its season at the MIAA tournament with a 34-24 overall mark and at No. 3 in the league. There were nine team and individual season records broken, including four by freshman first baseman Britt Westman. Six Bearcats earned All-MIAA honors.

Northwest has now notched 30-plus wins in three straight seasons, the best for any three-year span.

The women’s tennis team advanced to its third straight national tournament but lost in the first round.

The Northwest women ended the season at 18-11.

Junior Gena Lindsay won MIAA Player of the Year honors and the Co-Sportsmanship of the Year laurels.

Seven Bearcats were named to the All-MIAA Team.

The men’s tennis team was the MIAA runner-up and ended the year at 12-13.

The outdoor track and field team sent four individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championships. Senior Clint Prange picked up two national titles with an all-time NCAA Division II best in the shot put and his third discus title by beating the field by over 13 feet. Sophomore E.J. Falkner placed second in the 400-meter and fifth in the 200-meters to earn two All-America honors. In the 100-meter women’s prelims, junior Alisha Samuel took 13th overall with a time of 12.05 seconds. n

Fall preview

Football Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma returns eight starters on offense and six on defense from last year’s 11-2 team. The offense will be led by senior All-America candidate Josh Lamberson at quarterback and sophomore running back Xavier Omon, who set the single-season rushing record as a freshman. Defensively, seniors Dave Tollefson and Steve Williams anchor a line that was 10th in the NCAA in rushing defense.

The volleyball team, after a 15-17 record in 2004, lost one senior but has 10 players returning, including 2004 MIAA Freshman of the Year Lauren Cummings. Four newcomers have also signed on for Coach Lori Slight.

The men’s and women’s cross country programs look to return much experience with 17 men’s letterwinners and nine female athletes on the roster for 2005. Coach Richard Alsup’s men’s squad took sixth at last fall’s regionals; and women’s Coach Scott Lorek’s team placed seventh.

The soccer team welcomes 11 seasoned players from a 4-16 club in 2004. Coach Tracy Cross will enter her third season expecting much from Honorable Mention All-MIAA junior forward Beth Gutschenritter and sophomore midfielder Brittany Cash. n

Gena Lindsay, a junior from St. Joseph, continued to rake in the accolades this season, including being named an Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine and the MIAA Player of the Year after going 20-3 at No. 1 singles and 20-8 at No. 1 doubles. She also received the MIAA Co-Sportsmanship of the Year Award.

playing for Jim Wasem. He was not only a great coach but also an incredible teacher of life itself. Secondly, I have good memories of the team members I played with and the bond that was created. Beating MU, KU, and K-State all in one year, in 1975, was a nice memory of pride. I also recall the bench-clearing scuffle with CMSU and the two-hour delay in the game against SMSU when the umpires had to call the NCAA office to get a ruling on one of Wasem’s concocted plays.”

SINCE GRADUATION: “Professionally, I have had my own general practice of dentistry for 23 years located in Kansas City. I also was a part-time faculty member at the UMKC School of Dentistry. I am beginning my second term on the Smithville Public School Board. My wife, Kay, of 22 years, and I live in Smithville and have three children. Ryley, Britt and McKynlee. Ryley and Britt attend Northwest and are members of the baseball team. McKynlee is a sophomore at Smithville High School and plays softball, basketball, and runs cross-country and track.”

CURRENT INVOLVEMENT IN ATHLETICS: “I had the pleasure of coaching each one of my kids in either baseball or basketball in their early years and did so until they reached high school. Now, I am a loyal fan trying to make all of the high school activities and the Bearcat baseball games. Complete stranger has a familiar ring

T

he words “lost” and “found” have a new meaning for Jim Sperry ’69, ’72.

When Sperry graduated from Northwest with a master’s degree in education, he purchased a class ring to serve as a reminder of his accomplishment.

“You tuck your diploma away and make sure it never gets lost and you don’t see it,” Sperry said.

“You wear a ring and it’s always a reminder – so it was important to me.”

It wasn’t until the summer of 1984 when Sperry realized the ring he proudly wore for more than a decade was missing. Hoping he’d simply misplaced it somewhere, Sperry began a frantic three-month search for the ring only to come up empty handed.

“After losing the ring, I really didn’t have anything to remind me of my accomplishment,” he said. “I kept looking but eventually just gave up.”

And then he received an e-mail from a stranger.

Prior to the e-mail, Colorado businessman Dean Spear had contacted Northwest registrar Linda Girard about a ring his son recovered from a theme park in Aurora, Colo.

Spear’s son brought the ring home and tucked it away in his wife’s jewelry box. Spear’s busy

schedule prohibited him from locating the owner, so the ring remained buried in the box for nearly 11 years.

Nevertheless, Spear retired this year and decided it was time to start the search for the ring’s rightful owner.

“I don’t wear jewelry,” Spear said, “so it was of no value to me. But I thought at the time that this person might like to have his ring back.”

Spear e-mailed Girard a full description of the ring. Using the engraved initials as a reference point, Girard searched through University records where she found Sperry’s graduation date and e-mail address.

The two men corresponded by e-mail and after a successful confirmation, Spear shipped Sperry the ring to his home in Florida.

“It feels pretty good wearing it again,” Sperry said. “It reminds me that there are still good people out there like the gentleman who returned the ring and the folks at Northwest.” n

Free flowers are certainly one of the perks for Kelsey Lowe Smith, the editor of Florists’ Review magazine who was recently named one of Topeka’s top “30 under 30.”

rriving to her first day of work, Kelsey Lowe Smith ’00 knew she found her new home in Topeka, Kan., by the roses on her desk. Not only was her new employer in the floral industry, but it was also Valentine’s Day. Four years later, an article and picture of her hangs on the Florists’ Review’s bulletin board with the words, “Congratulations, Kelsey! Well-deserved recognition.” After all, The Topeka CapitalJournal recently recognized Smith in its “30 Under 30” recognition program for her leadership and contributions both in her business and community.

In four years, Smith has climbed the ranks to editor of Florists’ Review, which allows her to make an impact on the international trade magazine both professionally and personally.

“I love working at the magazine,” she said.

“I’ve learned so much about the industry.”

As editor, she writes and edits articles for the magazine, which focuses primarily on floral design as well as marketing, customer service and other business-related topics. She also edits books for the company’s book division.

Besides her daily writing and editing duties, Smith is part of a three-person “fun committee.”

She helps to plan more than 30 company-sponsored events for employees and their families every year.

Smith, a journalism major at Northwest, was also an intern for the Northwest Alumni Magazine.

Outside of work, she mentors a 13-year-old girl as part of the Big Brothers & Big Sisters program. In the past, she has participated in Topeka’s MS Walk in honor of an aunt who has multiple sclerosis.

“One of the nicest perks of my job is the free flowers – my favorite flowers are Gerberas,” she said. “We often get to take home flowers from our photo shoots. The only problem is that it has given my husband, Chris, an inferiority complex.” n

He started in product development and was instrumental in developing new ways to increase vaccine production and minimize contamination losses. Mr. Bates teaches the science of life back home

L

ove of God, self-discipline and thirst for knowledge are three things that have led Tyrone Bates ’02 down the path of accomplishment.

Bates grew up in Chicago, attending innercity schools. He moved to Kansas City at 14 and excelled at school. Of all of his friends to graduate from high school, Bates said about 10 percent went to college and only 5 percent of those graduated.

“My track coach was the first positive black male in my life, and he exposed me to several genres of education and life, especially the possibility to continue life at a collegiate level,” Bates said.

After graduating from Northwest, Bates returned home to teach science at his high school.

“I love the opportunity to interact with the youth of today,” Bates said. “I try to make a positive impact on their lives by relating to their emotions and circumstances, and I try to help them make the world a better place for our future.”

Bates attempts to relate to his students so they not only learn the scientific concepts he’s teaching but also to apply them to real-world situations.

“My motto in the classroom is you may learn

nothing about science, but you will learn something about life from Mr. Bates,” he said.

Returning to his former stomping ground, Bates said he sees his students face the same adversity he once did. He organized the Leadership Symposium and has given his students the opportunity to visit Northwest and grasp the idea of college. During the tour, students are paired with Northwest students to shadow and experience college life from a student’s perspective, visit classrooms and attend workshops concerning college issues.

“I even recruit for Northwest,” Bates said.

“After our weekend visit, one of my students was so excited with the possibility of higher education that she applied and is now a freshman.” n

Tyrone Bates ’02, who feels at home teaching science in his former high school, knew education was his ticket out of the troubled lifestyle of many of his inner-city classmates.

94, died March 22 in Santanta, KS. She had taught all eight grades in a country school in Grant City. She moved to Santanta in 1931 and began teaching third and fourth grades. In 1975, she retired from the Garden City (KS) School District where she had taught third grade for 25 years.
