e’ve often said that college was the best time of our lives. In fact, some of our most cherished memories together happened at Northwest – road trips, sporting events and meeting what have become our closest friends.

So why wouldn’t you want those great times to continue? Expanding your Northwest experience with the entire network of alums is easy to do and a ton of fun. We’re not able to donate a lot of money right now, but we can give our time and share our enthusiasm. Volunteering with the Northwest Alumni Association is all the fun of college – but without the classes!

After the realization that teaching home economics was not her cup of tea, Pat Cafferata ’69 made the most of every opportunity she encountered. As a result, this farm girl eventually became president and CEO of one of the world’s top advertising agencies.

Great advertising slogan is also good advice

I

n the late 1980s, Nike launched its highly successful “Just Do It” advertising campaign, which skyrocketed sales and put the company’s name on the map. But 20 years before the slogan was linked to the athletics shoe giant, Pat Cafferata, this issue’s cover feature and a 1969 Northwest graduate, was given the same advice – just do it.

Ironically, the advice came from an advertising executive who knew Pat was hesitant about entering the advertising business. After all, she was educated to become a home economics teacher. However, she took his advice, ran with it and high-jumped her way to the top of the industry where she eventually became president and chief executive officer of one of the world’s leading advertising agencies.

Although Pat never had the Nike advertising account, and she can’t claim the success of the “Just Do It” campaign, the slogan has been akin to how she’s lived her life – accepting challenges, welcoming changes and striving to be the best. She just did it, and did it well.

Pat, of all people, can attest to the impact advertising plays on our lives. I bet most of you can name the companies associated with these

reetings! What a great game was held at Arrowhead Stadium last year. The Fall Classic really lived up to its billing. It’s probably the most exciting game we’ve ever seen.

It was great to see so many of our friends from our Northwest days. We are especially grateful to Mark Clements, assistant athletic director, and Annette Boswell Coyne ’88 with the Kansas City Chiefs who helped us with our wheelchair and getting us settled in a suite. We are part of a great family of Bearcat boosters. We are enclosing pictures of our Northwest license plates.

Our sons, Peter ’87, ’88 and Chris ’92, and Barbara and I are proud to display our Northwest pride.

These are fine examples of how a good slogan can define a product. One slogan that defines something dear to all of our hearts is A Higher Form of Higher Learning – Northwest’s slogan for several years. As Northwest embarks on its second century, marketing efforts at Northwest (with Pat’s gracious assistance) will be enhanced and will include the creation of a fresh new University logo and slogan. While the change will be refreshing, you can be assured that one thing won’t change – the phrase coined by the late great Ryland Milner, “Once a Bearcat, Always a Bearcat!”

ow cool it was to read about the Northwest grads in Hollywood. So much for Northwest being an ag school or a teachers college. It just goes to show, a college education can take you anywhere, as long as you put your mind to it. Also, I remember what the winters were like in Maryville, so I don’t blame them for heading to a warmer climate.

T

o commemorate the first 100 years of Northwest’s storied history, the

University has announced plans to construct a centennial garden on campus. To be located in the area formerly occupied by the quads, the large garden will include beautiful landscaping, gathering areas, walkways, a fire pit and a large water feature. Historical references also will be incorporated into the design. Construction is slated to begin in March 2005, and the garden will be completed in time for the yearlong centennial celebration starting that fall.

orthwest is just a year away from celebrating its 100th birthday, and it occurs to me that there are some important things you can do to help strengthen your Alumni Association and University in preparation for our next 100 years.

1. Raise your loyalty.

Whether it’s communicated through your Northwest license plate, an Alumni Association or Bearcat paw decal on your vehicle, diploma on your wall or Bearcat green clothing, pride says, “Once a Bearcat, Always a Bearcat!”

There’s much to be proud of at Northwest. We’ve recently surpassed $33 million raised in our first comprehensive capital campaign, we’ve completed millions of dollars in renovations to the football stadium and other campus facilities, Alumni Association memberships are on the rise and many of our athletics teams are nationally ranked.

2. Help Northwest increase its Alumni Association membership and reach its campaign goals.

Supporting the University during the active phase of its capital campaign through your gift of membership to the Northwest Alumni Association is a gift that often goes unconsidered, but it will make quite a statement to those you’re closest to.

tive years of budget cuts and tuition increases. Therefore, it’s time for all of us, especially those living in Missouri, to tell our elected officials that enough is enough. Not only will the cuts and tuition increases soon damage access to higher education for many, it also stands a chance of depleting our educational quality and quality of life in Missouri. 4. Become informed about merger discussions.

During the last year, the University has fielded questions about the consideration of Northwest merging with the University of Missouri System.

However, much was yet to be determined as our Regents and University administrators worked to articulate a Memorandum of Understanding.

We understand that you want to see Northwest’s case in writing; therefore, all the information is available at www.nwmissouri.edu. Northwest is proud that it’s in a position to have this discussion about a merger, and I believe that it’s because of our many successes that we have arrived at this opportunity. Are there unknowns? Sure, but if we maintain our pride and pursue every avenue with the proper due diligence, Northwest will continue being the Northwest Bearcats now and forever.

I remember when ...

I

remember that Dr. Blanche Dow taught a class in humanities. Flying buttresses and ancient architecture had little meaning for a farm kid like me from Harrison County in 1946. She attempted to enhance meaning and promote enthusiasm for world culture by bringing pictures and illustrations of buildings and objects mentioned in her lectures.

She would ask, “If you were stranded on an island and could have only one book, what would you choose?” The desired answer was the French Dictionary. After some moments of silence, someone in the back of the room said, “A book on how to build a boat.” The class roared with laughter, and Dr. Dow showed a controlled sense of humor.

hen I attended Northwest from 1967 to 1971, I remember that freshmen could not have cars, and girls had to be in the dorm by 10:30 p.m. We also could not wear pants to supper until my junior year, and even then you could not wear jeans. Quite a change from today!

I

remember when I was a freshman in the fall of 1970 and lived in the trailers set up south of the high rise dorms. The girls’ dorms were overcrowded, and trailers were moved in and seven girls were assigned to the trailers to live until the end of the first semester. Thankfully I then moved into Perrin Hall.

D

uring the spring session of my junior year I took an introduction to literature class taught

by Chanda (Clary) Funston. When I entered class on the first day, I met a small little lady who was unique, intelligent and savvy. I was in awe of her from that first moment. At midterm I was earning a D. She called me into her office and told me very bluntly that even though I was capable, I was showing it very poorly. I had one more chance, or she would telephone my parents. I laughed, but she insisted that she was not joking. Her caring attitude, matter-of-factness and honesty were humbling. I improved my grade very quickly after that and will never forget her and the positive impact she had on my life.

Greek Week (1992)

Teamwork was in full force during Greek Week as members of other fraternities assisted the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity with a fivelegged race on the Tundra between the high rises.

I

remember when one of the guys’ floors in Franken Hall attacked the seventh floor residents with water and shaving cream. I also remember singing with Mike Johnson when seventh-floor Franken participated in the Homecoming Variety Show.

The Jean Jennings Bartik

Computing Museum Betty Jean Jennings Bartik ’45 was among six women “computers” chosen to program the ENIAC, the world’s first electronic computer. A museum at Northwest has been established and named in her honor.

PORTRAIT OF A DONOR Paul Chinitz (pictured above making presentation) was born in Atlantic, Iowa, in 1924. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Iowa in 1948 and his master’s the following year. He also took graduate courses in computer science at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1949 to 1950, Chinitz was a programmer and mathematician at the U.S. Naval Proving Grounds in Dahlgren, Va. From 1950 to 1953, he was a senior programmer with the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Company in Philadelphia where he analyzed, programmed and demonstrated the UNIVAC I. Chinitz first met Jean Jennings Bartik in Washington, D.C., in 1952 when he was conducting a UNIVAC I presentation to the U.S. Air Force Material Command. At the time, she was the Remington Rand salesperson responsible for that account. Chinitz went to work for Remington Rand in 1953 as the director of training in the Electronic Computer Department. In 1981, Chinitz published a book, “The Logic Design of Computers: An Introduction.” Chinitz is now retired and lives in Red Oak, Iowa. Among Chinitz’s contributions to the museum is a miniature cast-iron model of the UNIVAC I.

Legislature fails to approve merger bill

B

y the end of this year’s legislative session, the Missouri Legislature failed to approve a bill that would allow Northwest to enter the University of Missouri System.

Since April 2003, officials from both institutions, including Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard and University of Missouri System President Dr. Elson S. Floyd, have discussed the desirability and feasibility of making Northwest the first institution to merge with the UM System since it was founded in 1963.

Whether or not the merger will be sought next year will be considered this summer following a review by both institutions.

Throughout the entire process, Northwest leaders were adamant that what makes Northwest special today would still be prevalent should the

merger find state approval. A Memorandum of Understanding was created to specifically outline several points, including: ■ Northwest will not cut academic programs as a result of the merger.

■ Northwest will offer selective doctoral programs.

■ Northwest’s admission standards will continue to focus on access and opportunity for northwest Missourians.

■ Tuition will not automatically be raised to equal tuition at the other campuses in the UM System.

■ Northwest will maintain its textbook rental program.

Computing museum showcases memorabilia

orthwest’s Jean Jennings Bartik Computing Museum has received many contributions from patrons who have helped shape information technology since the museum’s 2002 opening.

The museum showcases Northwest alumna Jean Jennings Bartik ’45, a computer pioneer who programmed the ENIAC – the world’s first electronic computer – as well as her contributions to the computing field. More than 140 items are currently on display in the museum.

Memorabilia highlights include a video of the creation of the ENIAC during the 1940s, a miniature model of the UNIVAC I, three original ENIAC manuscripts and an exclusive ENIAC

decade ring counter on loan from the Smithsonian.

“The people who have contributed to the museum, whether with their time, money or memorabilia, are tremendously talented, highly motivated and well-educated individuals who really care about preserving both Northwest as well as the nation’s technology history,” said Kim Todd, assistant director/archivist.

Beginning in the fall, freshmen and transfer students from these states can begin to establish eligibility for Northwest’s Non-Resident Award.

When combined with Northwest’s Midwest Student Exchange Program or the Out-of-State Grant, the award will cover the difference between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition – about $3,510 per year.

“We are pleased to offer this new program to out-of-state students,” said Bev Schenkel, dean of enrollment management.

“We believe this is a way for Northwest to assist students in financing their education and reward them for working hard in the classroom.”

Schenkel said several potential out-of-state students have expressed interest in the program. No scholarship application is required.

Broadcasting museum reopens

Laptop program

Beginning in the fall,

each Northwest student living in the new campus apartments and suites will no longer have to share their computers with a roommate.

The University will provide these students with their own Gateway notebook computer complete with wireless capabilities, 256 million bytes of memory and a 20-gigabyte hard drive.

By fall 2005, Northwest will provide a new laptop computer to every student living in University housing.

When access to the wireless network is completed, every student (on and off campus) will have access to the wireless network.

Dr. Jon Rickman, vice president for information systems, said providing each resident with a personal computer will lighten usage loads on the campus labs and save on maintenance costs. ■

Forum discusses biopharming

T

he northwest Missouri region has a possible multi-million dollar bio-pharming investment opportunity involving local farmers that could result in new high-tech jobs in the future.

“We have an opportunity to transform the region and reduce the cost of health care,” said Mel Booth ’67, one of Northwest’s top donors and retired president and chief operating officer of MedImmune Inc., one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies. “We have something to potentially push technology forward as well as Northwest, but it is going to take unfolding a good business plan.”

During a February forum, Booth, Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard, Regent Doug Sutton, “pharmer” Bill Horan and economist Dr. Mark Drabenstott discussed the possibility of bringing pharming facilities to the region.

Horan has been growing pharmaceutical crops for

four years in Iowa. His genetically engineered corn is shipped to France where it is processed into medication for cystic fibrosis patients. The pharmaceutical crops can be grown 14 times cheaper than the drugs can be manufactured in a laboratory, Horan said.

“Northwest has come across a golden opportunity to partner agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry and to discuss the potential opportunities in this area,” Hubbard said.

Drabenstott, director of the Center for the Study of Rural America at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, said pharmaceutical crops could create high returns for local farmers.

“We have the opportunity to create highskilled, high-wage jobs where they are so desperately needed,” Drabenstott said. “New paths to a new rural economy have exciting promise, but they will only be reached in the future if we’re willing to chart a new course and forge new partnerships.” ■

Bell Tower receives face-lift

University reapplies for Baldrige Award

prominent part of the Northwest landscape is receiving a facelift.

The renovation of the Bell Tower, which began in May, includes repairs to the structure as well as a completely redesigned plaza.

“When the Bell Tower was built 30 years ago, I don’t think anybody realized how popular it would become as a gathering space,” said Construction Manager David Duvall. “When it is used, it seems like a kind of presentation area, almost a stage. The current design does not lend itself to the way the use has evolved.”

In addition to traffic flow problems and a deteriorating facade, the current Bell Tower base is not accessible to individuals in wheelchairs. The new design calls for a plaza with four ramps, all connecting to the major sidewalks surrounding the structure. The walkways will meet under the tower, forming an “N” for Northwest.

Other changes include the addition of benches, pole lighting at four corners and new landscaping.

Billesbach named Booth College dean

r. Tom Billesbach has been named the new dean of Northwest’s Melvin and Valorie Booth College of Business and Professional Studies.

Billesbach, currently a professor and chair of Northwest’s Department of Marketing/Management, will begin his duties Aug. 1.

“A dean’s position is something I’ve been considering for the past two years,” Billesbach said. “I knew I was ready for another professional challenge, and then the opportunity for the dean’s position opened up at Northwest. The timing couldn’t have been better.”

If successful, the next stage is a site visit in October. Northwest received its first site visit in 2003.

“Baldrige has a history of making multiple site visits before a victory is declared,” John Politti, consultant, said. “If the judges see you’re making progress after that first site visit, they’ll have more confidence, and that will enhance your opportunity for selection.” ■

Three retired professors head back to the books, back on the farm or back on the road.

DR. BOB BOHLKEN fter 30 years of teaching language and speech at Northwest, Dr. Bob Bohlken still is involved in language studies.

Bohlken writes a historical column titled “Who Gives a Hoot” for a local weekly newspaper, and he is also working on a collection of self- and locally published books.

“How to Talk Northwest Missouri Talk: A Sample of Rural Language of Northwest Missouri” was published while he was still teaching, and he plans to write another book of idioms, “How to listen to a Rural Midwesterner.”

“I have more than 1,000 idioms and sayings, and my big project is to make it reflect rural Midwest,” he said. “There are 40 just about chickens!”

Bohlken has also written several children’s books. The most recent is “Listening to the Mukies and Their Character Building Adventures.”

Bohlken, a former professor of communication/theater arts, retired in 2000.

He and his wife, Mary, live in Maryville and are involved in the community and love spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Bohlken also tutors and leads annual workshops on listening at the Maryville Treatment Center.

“What I miss most about Northwest is the interaction with the students and the mutual respect we shared,” he said. ■

DR. E.K. DEVORE gray house on Walnut Street is home to one of Northwest’s most extraordinary individuals and retired professors. Dr. E.K. DeVore retired as a distinguished professor after dedicating 35 years to the University.

DeVore retired in 1985 after serving as dean of the business college for 23 years.

Some of his accomplishments included developing business programs and serving as president of the Midwest Business Administration Association in 1968.

DeVore said he has missed Northwest the past 19 years but has enjoyed watching the campus expand.

“It’s fascinating to watch the growth of campus over the years,” he said. “It doesn’t make me sad that

When DeVore and his wife, Emma, aren’t attending Northwest activities, they travel, visit their children and seven grandchildren and spend time doing things they love.

For the last 10 years, DeVore’s hobby of woodworking has expanded from covered wagons to German airplanes and birdhouses.

“I don’t remember how I started or exactly when, but it gives me something to do,” he said.

“Retirement is better than I expected.” ■

When Linda Hanson retired, she traded in her textbooks and lecture notes for farm equipment and antiques.

LINDA HANSON lthough her office has been cleaned out and class preparation is no longer needed, Linda Hanson, a retired assistant professor of accounting, economics and finance, is doing things she loves and helping her husband care for their 250 acres of land.

“Now I’m just a farmer,” Hanson said. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Hanson began teaching part time at Northwest in the fall of 1981, and she helped develop the accounting information systems class.

“Teaching is a wonderful career, and I enjoyed it very much,” she said. “But anymore I like getting up in the morning and not having to rush off to class. I take pleasure in just being here to enjoy the land.”

Hanson and her husband, Richard, live on the outskirts of Hopkins. When she’s not farming, she’s busy caring for her mother-in-law, gardening, country dancing and sorting antiques.

Hanson plans to open a booth in an antique mall to sell collectibles she’s obtained over the years.

“While I do miss teaching and coffee from Java City, I’m really happy to be retired,” she said. “It’s been a nice chapter in my life, and one that’s allowed me to help other people, family and friends.” ■

id you ever wonder what it would be like if your family was just a little bigger? Now is your chance to find out. Starting this fall, the Annual Fund is adding the Adopt-a-Bearcat Scholarship Program to its menu of support opportunities.

As the cost of higher education continues to increase at a rate greater than inflation, the need for additional scholarship programs at Northwest continues to grow. The Adopt-a-Bearcat program is the easiest and most progressive format the University has instituted to date.

The new program will allow funds contributed by alumni and friends to be matched by the University and awarded directly to a worthy student in the form of a scholarship. The scholarship will even be awarded in the name of the donor.

Dick ’48 and Phyllis Combs ’49 Leet are finding this out firsthand.

When Northwest was in the formative stages of its first capital campaign, campus leaders approached Dick to serve as the volunteer chairman. He had assisted The Ohio State University with a $350 million campaign in the 1990s and, as a lifelong Bearcat, he seemed the natural choice.

As a native of Maryville, Dick grew up with Northwest. He attended kindergarten at Horace Mann School on the Northwest campus. He also attended Eugene Field Elementary School and finished his education in the public school system before returning to Northwest to study chemistry. In fact, it was in a chemistry lab where he met his future wife, Phyllis Combs.

Phyllis came to Northwest from Princeton, Mo., and completed her education degree. She worked to put Dick through graduate school at Ohio State and became, in her own words, “CEO of a major household,” staying at home with their three children – Richard II, Alan and Dana.

Dick enjoyed a successful career with Amoco Corp. before retiring as vice chairman and director in 1991. Living in Gainesville, Ga., the couple remain as busy as ever, serving and leading many volunteer organizations and spending time with their grandchildren.

Besides serving as Northwest’s campaign chairman, Dick is on the Board of Trustees of Brenau University in Gainesville, is a member of the foundation board at Ohio State and is a past member of the Northwest Foundation Board of Directors. He is also a former national president of the Boy Scouts of America and is still a member of its national board. Phyllis, a member

of the Northwest Foundation board, has served many civic groups through the years.

The couple’s commitment to the causes they believe in does not stop at service and leadership – they also invest in the future.

“We started our life together at Northwest,” Phyllis said. “Any success that we have enjoyed is built on the foundation that Northwest provided us.”

The Leets’ investment in Northwest began in the 1980s when Phyllis gave funds for a capital project at Horace Mann Laboratory School that provided adequate space for the pre-kindergarten program. In 1988 the Phyllis Combs Leet Scholarship Fund was created for entering freshmen in the Family and Consumer Sciences program. At the same time, Dick was working with chemistry alumni to create a scholarship fund named after his mentor, J. Gordon Strong.

Support for both scholarships has grown stronger since the launching of The Campaign for Northwest. The Leets also have made a substantial gift to the Education Initiative and have provided an unrestricted deferred gift through a charitable remainder trust.

“The University community is committed to ensuring the long-term future of Northwest, and this campaign is the first step in doing so. We are so pleased to do whatever we can to assist,” Dick said. “I hope others will do the same.” ■

How a farm girl from Smithville took a degree in home economics and became CEO of a top worldwide advertising agency.

By the time Pat Shepherd Cafferata ’69 graduated from Northwest, she had all of the ingredients for success. In high school she was voted “most likely to succeed,” was valedictorian, captain of the basketball team and senior class president. Her outgoing personality coupled with her desire to excel at anything she attempted made her equally successful at Northwest. There was no doubt that the job offers would be plentiful after she finished student teaching high school home economics.

There was one problem.

She “absolutely hated” teaching.

The farm girl from Smithville who had plenty of experience driving a tractor, cooking and sewing, decided she would enter the competitive, male-dominated world of business.

f Cafferata was going to forego teaching, she knew she would have to be open-minded in her search for employment. Her responses to the classified ads in The Kansas City Star netted her three job offers. One was for an account coordinator at Barickman Advertising, the largest advertising agency in Kansas City.

“At the time, I didn’t even know what an advertising agency was,” Cafferata admitted.

She rejected the agency’s offer because the salary wasn’t quite as good as her other offers, but the agency was persistent.

“The gentleman at the ad agency called me back and said, ‘Look, Pat, you’ve always done everything in an organized, responsible way. Why don’t you take a risk and for the fun of it just do it?’” she said. “I accepted the offer, and as it turns out, I loved it.”

After six months at the agency, Cafferata grew bored being a “glorified secretary.” However, she became interested in the research component of the business. When the economy took a downward turn forcing the agency to eliminate several positions, Cafferata stepped up.

“It was a great opportunity for me because I took on a full-time research assistant job in addition to my other full-time job within the agency,” she said. “It was then that I really learned consumer research and how to do focus

groups – something I would use the rest of my career.”

But after three years at Barickman, Cafferata decided she had learned all she could there.

“I dusted a lot of desks, and the closest I ever got to an important meeting was in the back room running the projector,” she said. “Although it was a great experience, it just wasn’t a woman’s kind of place.”

A

rmed with skills as a focus group moderator, Cafferata scanned the classified ads in Chicago – a mecca for advertising professionals – and landed a research position at Needham Harper & Steers (now DDB Needham Chicago). In her 13 years there, she became the agency’s first female research director and, as a senior vice president, was the only woman on the board of management. There she met two important men: her predecessor and mentor, Dr. Bill Wells, and her husband, Mike Cafferata, the agency’s executive creative director to whom she’s been married to for 28 years.

“We’d talk about work all the way to the office in the morning and then all they way home,” Mike said. “We were obsessed with it, but it was fun.”

In 1986, she and Mike became business competitors and had to be more tight-lipped when she accepted a position as president and chief executive officer of Young & Rubicam Chicago – a division of a top worldwide communication company.

Cafferata, the only female CEO of a major agency in Chicago at the time, remained at the helm of

Young & Rubicam Chicago for 13 years. By the time she retired in 1999 at 55, she had transformed the office from a small company with local clients to one with large, multinational clients including Kraft, Miller Brewing, Jim Beam, Sears and Norwegian Cruise Lines. She also led Young & Rubicam in its evolution from an advertising agency to an integrated communications company.

T

he role of women in the advertising industry has changed significantly from when Cafferata started.

“When I first started, all of the executives were men,” she said. “I guess I thought that they knew something I didn’t know because I hadn’t been trained in advertising or marketing. I set out to learn anything I could, and I didn’t let it discourage me.

“Actually, by the time I retired, we were having trouble finding qualified men in some departments.”

Cafferata, a great strategist, was well respected by her peers as a leader in her field, regardless of her gender. She held leadership roles with the Chicago Ad Club and was presented the Advertising Woman of the Year award – the first researcher to receive the honor.

As CEO, Cafferata’s employees often referred to her as “PC” or “The Ma’am.”

at and I have a great time and enjoy being with each other,” Mike Cafferata said. “Even though we’re both retired, we’re still marketers at heart. We’re always analyzing marketing plans and trying to figure out everyone’s strategy. We can’t help ourselves. It gets in your blood.”

Cafferata enjoys horseback riding, traveling and entertaining and hopes to resume her interest in playing tennis and the piano, but she admits to having no set plans for retirement.

“I have no idea what I’ll be doing in five years,” she said. “I’m about as bad on goals for retirement as I was for goals in my career. I was raised to do my best, beat everybody else if I could – in an honest way – and the right things would come my way. And they have. I never had the goal to be a CEO of an advertising agency. I just stay active and know the importance of being a lifelong learner.”

Cafferata, who divides her time between homes in Chicago and on her family’s farm in Smithville, stays active in her retirement by mentoring students and serving on many boards. She’s a member of Northwest’s Mass Communication Professional Advisory Committee and serves on the board of directors for RHR International and the Columbian Financial Group. In addition, she is on the Dean’s Advisory Board and the Women’s Business Association Advisory Board, both with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

She has received the Friends of Kellogg School of Management Award from Northwestern University and the Distinguished Alumni Award and an honorary doctorate from Northwest.

“Northwest is a great place – it has an excellent student environment, top academics and a great deal of pride,” Cafferata said. “There’s a dynamic environment at Northwest and it’s never static, unlike a lot of colleges. I’m proud that I received my degree from Northwest. I learned a lot in college that I’ve applied to the business world.

Talented alumni, current students and Northwest supporters are being sought to craft the lyrics for a Northwest Centennial celebration song to be premiered at the Centennial kickoff on Sept. 3, 2005.

The composer of the winning entry will be awarded a cash prize.

Members of the Centennial Song Committee are hoping for an alma mater-like song or hymn-like work for a large chorus and wind symphony. Specifically, the lyrics should be elegant and easy to perform. Additionally, the lyrics should be suitable for the type of dignified, significant occasion in which it will be premiered.

Richard Wiles (attd. ’39-’41) fter 45 years at the Nodaway Valley Bank in Maryville, Richard Wiles retired in 1986. During his career, he was instrumental in helping many college students with their personal finances. Wiles was the sponsor on the Board of Directors for the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity for 28 years. He worked with the Boy Scouts for many years, earning one of scouting’s highest honors, the Silver Beaver Award. His family is a Bearcat den – his five children graduated from Northwest.

Chris Gegg ’95 hris Gegg ’95, an executive producer at WKRN-TV News 2 in Nashville, Tenn., has been a producer at some of the top television stations in the country including stations in Tampa, Fla., and Detroit. While working at these network affiliates, Gegg earned two Emmy Awards and the Best Newscast Award two consecutive years. He credits the many hands-on opportunities he gained in his broadcasting degree for preparing him for the television news industry.

Dr. Robert Knapp r. Robert Knapp began his chiropractic practice in Maryville in 1956, retiring in 1989. A devout Bearcat fan, Knapp serves on the Board of Directors of the Bearcat Booster Club. He attends all home football and basketball games and travels to many of the away games. Knapp is also an active member of the Maryville Host Lions Club and the Hope Lutheran Church of Maryville.

Frank “Chip” Strong ’73 fter earning his undergraduate degree from Northwest in 1973, Frank “Chip” Strong pursued his law degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

He became an attorney with Strong & Strong, a firm his father started in the early 1950s. Strong served on the Northwest Board of Regents for 11 years, during which time he was active in helping with the construction of the Student Recreation Center and the renovation of Lamkin Athletic Complex, Roberta Hall and the J.W. Jones Student Union. He currently serves on the Northwest Foundation Board of Directors, and his three children are Northwest graduates.

Russell Northup ’65, ’90 ussell Northup ’65, ’90, an assistant professor of marketing/management who retires this summer, received the Dean’s Award for Service and the Tower Service Award in 1997. In 1993, he was recognized by the national chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity as Grand Prytanis Key Leader.

He has been the faculty athletics representative since 1998, the TKE alumni adviser for 12 years and was an adviser for the American Marketing Association and the Turkish Student Association.

Dr. Sterling Surrey r. Sterling Surrey came to Northwest in 1939 after graduating from Harvard University. He was chairman of the Department of Business from 1949 to 1961 and for many years was the grand marshal for commencement ceremonies. An avid Bearcat fan, Surrey was often the voice heard during the Bearcat football games. While at Northwest, Surrey was given a Huebner Fellowship at the Horton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania as well as a visiting professorship and eventually a full professorship at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. ■

Volleyball Despite several injuries that plagued Northwest’s softball team this season, the Bearcats finished 9-9 in conference play.

Spring wrap-up

The tennis teams had another strong season. Despite falling short in the MIAA tournament, the men and women advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The women won their regional, hosted at Northwest, and advanced to the NCAA Division II National round of competition for the second consecutive season.

The baseball team, after last season’s trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament, finished 34-23 and finished No. 3 in the MIAA regular-season standings. Northwest reached the championship round before falling to No. 1-ranked Central Missouri State.

The softball team struggled with injuries, illnesses and other issues. But Northwest put together a respectable 20-33 record, including a 9-9 finish in MIAA action.

Track and field hosted the MIAA Championships, finishing fifth in the men’s competition and sixth in the women’s. Senior Mary Wirt took third in the discus during the NCAA Division II Championships and was given All-America honors. ■

Head Coach Lori DeJongh-Slight returns for her second season, looking to improve on last season’s 5-27 record. Freshman standout Mackenzie Heston returns for her sophomore season, while senior Steph Suntken will also provide attacking and blocking help. The Bearcats will have several newcomers on board as well, as they rebuild.

Women’s Soccer

Head Coach Tracy Cross’s squad hopes to rebound from a 3-18-4 season. Last year, Northwest lost seven matches by one goal and played seven overtime matches, tying four of them and losing the other three. Freshman Beth Gutschenritter was a second-team All-MIAA selection for Northwest last season.

Cross Country

Both the men’s and women’s teams will hope to improve on last year’s finish. Coach Richard Alsup’s men’s team was fourth in the MIAA and fifth in the region last season. Northwest women’s Coach Vicki Wooton will have virtually everyone back from a team which finished seventh in the MIAA and 10th in the region last season. ■

Winter wrap-up Women’s Basketball

W

inning the MIAA Tournament was a first for the women’s team, and the trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament was the team’s first since 1990. Northwest finished with a 24-7 record, its best finish since 1983-84.

The Bearcats were led by eight seniors, including center Sarah Vollertsen, who was named First-Team All-MIAA. The season came to a close with a 65-64 loss to Washburn in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Kelvin Parker broke several Bearcat records this season as he and his teammates advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight – the team’s second trip in three years.

he men’s team was ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II during the week of Jan. 12 – the first time a Bearcat squad had ever been ranked that high. The Bearcats won the MIAA Tournament championship game and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Northwest came from behind to defeat Drury on a last-second three-pointer to advance to the Elite Eight. The Bearcats’ season ended with an 88-81 loss to Southern Indiana in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. Kelvin Parker, the regular season MIAA Tournament and MIAA Most Valuable Player, the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and the South Central Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished his career at No. 4 on the all-time scoring chart at Northwest. Parker holds virtually every Bearcat record for free-throw shooting, and he played in more Northwest victories than any other player in school history. ■

Quarterback Greg Teale ‘97 maneuvered his team into the end zone enough times during the 1996 season that the Bearcats won their first NCAA Division II playoff game in Northwest history. Today, Teale’s enthusiasm for Bearcat athletics is evident through is son, Rece.

Defending the lives of death-row inmates

W

Attorney Sean O’Brien ’77 has saved three innocent clients from death row, and dozens of his clients have been spared the death penalty.

hile fighting to save clients from death row, defense attorney Sean O’Brien ’77 has argued capital punishment cases from Kansas City to the floor of the U.S. Supreme Court.

With a degree in English and a minor in speech communications at Northwest, O’Brien followed in his father’s footsteps and entered law school at the University of MissouriKansas City.

For eight years, he worked as the public defender in Jackson County but left his job in 1989 to fight for 16-year-old Health Wilkins’ life.

The fight for Wilkins sparked O’Brien and his business partner to open the doors to their publicly funded, nonprofit organization, The Missouri Capital Punishment Resource Center, in 1990. When Congress terminated funding in 1995, the name changed to the Public Interest Litigation Clinic.

During O’Brien’s career, he’s saved three innocent clients from death row, and dozens of clients have been spared the death penalty. But even strong arguments haven’t stopped the state from executing 1980

“I’ve witnessed two of these executions, and it leaves a mark on your soul,” he said.

While his work hasn’t made O’Brien popular with capital punishment supporters, he wishes Americans would look at the system from other perspectives.

In 1993, O’Brien defended Larry Griffin, who was convicted of murder. O’Brien said he learned of Griffin’s innocence in May 1996 through the confession of the guilty, but it was too late. He couldn’t get the courts to overturn the conviction, and a month later Griffin was executed.

“I was positive from the beginning he was innocent, and when I finally found out the truth I couldn’t get anyone to stop his execution,” he said.

“He went down with so much anger and resentment, and since then it’s enough to make a guy bitter.”

But the bitterness and resentment for the judicial system has only made O’Brien fight harder for clients’ lives. In 1996, he continued to fight for Joe Amrine who was sitting on death row for a murder he didn’t commit. O’Brien successfully argued Amrine’s case, and Amrine was set free after 26 years in prison.

Amrine now works as a paralegal for O’Brien.

“Joe taught me a lot,” O’Brien said. “He saw 62 people executed, and most of those had become his friends. Through Joe I’ve learned life is a very precious thing.” ■

Cutting a new path

A

family vacation and a bit of motherly advice led Joel ’91 and Tammy King ’90 Hughes to the chance of a lifetime. What started as a part time business in a duplex has become a warehouse full of cookie cutters in all shapes, sizes and colors.

As owners of Off the Beaten Path in Pleasant Valley, Joel and Tammy knew they wanted to be independent business owners.

“With patience, perseverance and prayer, the Lord blessed us to start a small business, blessed us with two children and the freedom to not have to work all the time,” Joel said.

The cookie cutter business surfaced after Joel’s parents, Larry and Nancy, mentioned the idea.

Nancy, who once owned a country store in Iowa, said customers were always looking for cookie cutters. After a few days of discussion, Joel and Tammy jumped on the idea.

In 1993, Joel was a bus driver and Tammy taught elementary school in Lee’s Summit. During the evenings and weekends they shuffled through mail orders and prepared for trade shows.

“We didn’t quit our day jobs,” Joel said, “but we knew it was taking off when it was like Christmas morning every day. We’d come home from work to find mail orders and people leaving messages on our answering machine.”

Soon they needed more room to house their business and moved into a three-bedroom house in 1994. Tammy was still teaching, but Joel dedi-

cated his time to the family business. The couple relocated in 1997 into a larger home after exceeding capacity once again. While Tammy was busy with their two children, Tyler and Kala, Joel continued to run the business in the garage. A few years later he built a storage area for the assortment of cookie cutters that filled the garage from floor to ceiling. In 2000, the business moved into a commercial space warehouse.

“We knew from the beginning we had to do this, and it’s worked,” Tammy said. “Joel’s mom always has great ideas and is a real entrepreneur like Joel. And Joel has taken this business to where it is today because he’s so creative.”

So what’s their favorite cookie cutter?

“It’s a small heart that’s inserted in a hand,” he said.

“There’s an old saying that says hearts to work, hands to God. I just give everything to God, like Tammy and I did with the business, and the work gets done.” ■

Tweety and Daffy and clowns, oh, my!

N

ot many people can look at a balloon and see Tweety Bird or Daffy Duck, but Shawn Wake ’92 can.

As a balloon entertainer, Wake has a repertoire of more than 600 unique balloon creations. He uses an inflated palette of more than 50 balloon colors in 10 shapes and sizes to create anything from crazy hats to an entire menagerie of animals, cartoon characters and university mascots.

Wake performs at restaurants, corporate parties, birthday parties, fairs and special events through Up, Up & Away, a balloons and entertainment planning service in the Kansas City area.

“The most rewarding part about the balloon business is making people happy,” Wake said.

The Maryville native’s reputation of making people laugh led him to take a semester off in the fall of 1989 to attend Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College in Venice, Fla. The intense 10-week program earned Wake a bachelor of fun arts certificate.

“I basically studied to become a living cartoon,” he said.

The self-taught balloon entertainer used books, videos and magazines to learn his trade. However, some of the best techniques came from trading ideas with others in the business.

Although Wake’s “real” job is with Vista Productions as a stage and set services manager, he began working with balloons 15 years ago after returning from clown college.

Earning a theatre degree, taking on the role of Bobby Bearcat for four years and acting in many Northwest productions and Variety Show skits, Wake is comfortable performing in front of crowds. But believe it or not, he does not like to be the center of attention.

“I love street performance because people can come and go as they please,” he said. “That’s the kind of audience I want to entertain. I live to make other people happy.” ■

Turning a handicap into a helping hand

E

Kristi Wolfgram ’93 has worn a prosthetic arm since she was six months old. Today, she uses her life experiences to help others deal with the loss of a limb, including American soldiers returning from Iraq.

ven as a child Kristi Wolfgram ’93 knew she was different from others, but that never stopped her determination of overcoming challenging obstacles.

Born with congenital below the elbow deficiency, Wolfgram received her first prostheses when she was six months old. Growing up in Omaha, Neb., she participated in activities with children her own age despite her differences.

“My handicap wasn’t the first thing I wanted people to notice about me,” Wolfgram said.

Following graduation, her degree in broadcasting landed her positions in Omaha at KFAB and KGOR. In her spare time, Wolfgram danced for Omaha’s professional basketball team, The Racers.

After living in Texas for a few years, Wolfgram returned to Nebraska in 2002 and became a member of the dance squad for Omaha’s National Indoor Football League, Omaha Beef.

Through the years, advancements were made in prosthetic equipment and while being fitted with new prostheses in 1993, she was introduced to John AMY SMITH

“I realized that I could bring a unique perspective and help those who wear prostheses because of my own situation,” she said.

Today she works as the patient coordinator for Advanced Arm Dynamics Inc., a company founded

by Miquelez. She serves as a liaison between patients, agencies and the prosthetic specialist.

Working with patients around the world, Wolfgram said educating patients that life hasn’t stopped is what makes her job the most rewarding.

In the last year, Wolfgram and her co-workers fitted U.S. soldiers who’ve lost limbs during the war in Iraq.

“I love helping people, and we can get them back into things they enjoyed doing with just the right prosthetic,” she said. “The soldiers are an amazing group of people who have put a new perspective on prosthetic care allowing for further advancements in prosthetics. We can all learn from their attitudes and determination.”

For herself, Wolfgram attributes her independence and success to the support of family and friends and to the prosthetic technology that has developed through the years.
