As the starting left tackle for the NFL’s Houston Texans, 6-foot-7, 320-pound Seth Wand ’03, the highest draft pick in Northwest history, is typically one of the biggest men on the field. Whoda thunk it? Certainly not me.

A

s the editor of the Northwest Alumni Magazine, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some fascinating Northwest alumni. I’ve interviewed a legendary horse trainer, a business mastermind, a plane crash survivor, a Secret Service agent who protected several presidents, a TV producer. I’ve taken a behindthe-scenes tour of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, dined with the programmer of the world’s first electronic computer and talked shop with the former CEO of a leading worldwide advertising agency.

I tell you this not to illustrate that Northwest has some great success stories, but to illustrate the importance of expecting the unexpected.

This is the 14th issue for this publication in the magazine format, which obviously makes for 14 cover stories. And although the content of each story is different, a routine has developed over the years as I prepare for the next interview – making the initial contact with the interviewee, lining up travel arrangements, discussing the layout with the photographer and designer, drafting a list of questions to ask during the interview.

It’s my opinion that for any story to be a success, a good amount of research must occur before the interview. It’s also important to ask the right questions during the interview. Pretty basic stuff, really. However, no matter how much research I’ve done, it’s impossible to not go into an interview with some preconceived notions. Chances are someone who works with NASA has an interest

in science, or a computer programmer enjoys math or technology, or a former horse trainer spent a lot of time around horses.

I should have known better.

I’ll admit, when I boarded a plane to Houston to interview Seth Wand, the feature of this issue’s cover story, I had some preconceived notions. I’d done some research. I had my list of questions ready to go.

How tough could it be? I was dealing with a guy who had made it to the top of his profession – he was a starting offensive lineman in the National Football League.

I was sure he played football since grade school.

I was sure he was awestruck when he heard the roar of 70,000 fans the first time he was on the field at Reliant Stadium. I was sure he had an ego that matched the size of his signing bonus. I was sure he collected football cards as a kid and could rattle off his favorite players.

I was sure wrong – on all of the above.

When the interview was over and I headed back to Maryville, I realized there were only two things about Seth Wand that I thought I was sure about that were indeed a reality – he’s a loyal Bearcat and, at 6-foot-7, 320 pounds, he’s one enormous guy.

he one word you often hear from friends and alumni of

Northwest is “family.” The Ottes have taken that to a different level. At least 13 members of the Otte family have attended or graduated from Northwest. Needless to say, the University wouldn’t be where it is today without the commitment of families like the Ottes.

Jack and Gilda are a fixture in the Maryville community and on the Northwest campus. It seems there has always been an Otte on campus since the late 1940s when Jack attended Northwest after serving his country during World War II. Today, as members of The Centennial Society, they attend virtually every sporting event and performance series and are tremendous supporters of the Bearcats.

Bearcats find themselves in a good place at a good time

S

peaking at the Bearcat Advantage Freshman Convocation the day before classes for the fall term began, I told 1,200 new Bearcats that they were in a good place at a good time and cited the many reasons – the success rate of Northwest students, the Fall Classic at Arrowhead, the Missouri Quality Awards, the nationally recognized leadership of many of the University’s innovative programs, the continuous improvement of campus facilities and the unmatched quality/value of their Northwest education.

Through your broad and deep support for Northwest, alumni are also in a good place at a good time.

In just two years after The Campaign for Northwest to raise “$21million for the 21st Century” was publicly announced, the total pledged to support Northwest already exceeds $36 million. With three years left in the Campaign, the final goal has obviously been revised upward. The success in rallying support for the students of Northwest resembles the makeup of our alumni over many decades. Northwest has graduates who have reached the highest levels of success and have generously shared the rewards of their success with their alma mater. Without their loyalty and connection, $36 million in gifts and pledges could not have been achieved.

Think twice before skipping class before Thanksgiving, buddy.

I remember when ...

I

remember in 1932-33 that tuition was only $17.50 per quarter and room was $1.50 per week. I also remember paying my last nickel for a loaf of bread. I was a pilot (pile it) at Wells Dairy and was paid 10 cents per hour. Northwest’s enrollment that year was 800 students, and only four owned cars.

remember taking a class from Dr. Sterling Surrey, who on the first day of class said we would be using the Saturday Evening Post as our text. My first thought was it was going to be such an easy class, but instead I never worked so hard or learned so much as I did in this class. We had a report to write each week, like a term paper, where we chose an ad to review, complete with all of the financial reports about the company as well as the evaluation of the ad. This class was advertising and analysis of financial statements all rolled into one.

remember when you got negative credit (one credit deducted from total credits earned that semester), if you were absent from class either the day before a holiday or the day after a holiday.

remember when the Outback was known as the Powerstation. To me, the old name makes a lot more sense, given the fenced series of transformers behind the bar and the lack of kangaroos or crocodiles lurking nearby. During my senior year, my girlfriend and now wife, Suzi (Miles White ’91), and I would dance shoulder to shoulder with about 1,000 other Bearcats and Bearkittens. Upon reflection, given the fact that temperatures rose to approximately 137 degrees, maybe the Outback makes sense after all!

remember Dr. David Slater’s tendency to pause during a lecture to say, “I want to give you something to hang your hat on.”

This would be followed by some of his “useful lies” that brought an entire body of knowledge into focus. His knack for introducing complex theory with such clarity not only gave me the tools to succeed in attaining a graduate degree in literature, but also informed my own teaching more than any other aspect of my Northwest education.

Northwest announces American Dream grant

W

ith the establishment of the American Dream Grant, Northwest has again set a standard in higher education. A needs-based program – and the only of its kind in the nation – the grant was offered for the first time in the fall to first-time freshmen who met qualifications. American Dream students receive tuition, room and board, use of a computer and primary textbooks. The grant is renewable for a second year. Missouri residency is not required.

The only cost to students is $1,500 for each of the two years – an amount equal to working during the school year for 10 hours a week at minimum wage.

o action has been taken about whether the merger between Northwest and the University of Missouri System will be introduced again to the Missouri General Assembly in January. Although Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard and UM System President Dr. Elson Floyd discussed the merger this summer, the issue remains in a holding pattern.

“We’re still interested,” Hubbard said. “There is no change in the reasons we want a merger with the UM System, but no legislative strategy has been developed at this time.”

There will be a new governor, new chairs for both budget committees, a new president pro-tem of the Senate and a new speaker of the House.

its 100th anniversary during 2005-06, and several events

group of urban students experienced college life this summer at Northwest when they spent a week on campus at Challenge U. The pilot program was designed by a team of Northwest faculty and administrators and co-sponsored by the Kauffman Scholars college access program, funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City.

Dr. Kent Porterfield, Northwest vice president for student affairs, said Challenge U “was designed to get kids excited about going to college.”

About 50 students, who began eighth grade this fall, were on campus in early August. They lived in a residence hall, took classes in reading, math and science and enjoyed social activities. The finale of the scholars’ academic week was a rocket launch.

College students served as youth leaders, with each mentoring two of the middle school students for the week. University faculty and middle school teachers provided classroom instruction.

Bernard Franklin, executive director of the Kauffman Scholars program, said Northwest’s program was selected because, the University “clearly wants to demonstrate its commitment to our program and to assure us that as we move forward

Students approve adding activity fee

A

fter conducting two online student polls, Student Senate recently approved the proposal for a $30 per trimester student activity fee for fulltime students and a $15 fee for part-time students.

The fee will generate an estimated $345,000 to pay for free monthly activities and increase the number of mainstream concerts at Northwest.

The proposal also ensures that students will have input on the activities brought to campus as well as have first access to purchasing concert tickets.

“Incorporating a student activity fee will only enhance the quality of entertainment at Northwest and will help us compete with what other schools are offering,” said Emily Dix, 2003-04 Student Senate president. “Until now, Northwest was the only school in Missouri that didn’t have a student activity fee, and the fee our students approved is on the lower end of what other schools are charging.”

Provost leaving Northwest

After 12 years with

Northwest, Provost Dr. C. Taylor Barnes is headed back to his roots. He has accepted a position as distinguished visiting professor of geography at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He will be at Northwest through the fall trimester.

Barnes joined the Air Force military intelligence division in 1970 and spent the majority of his 20-year military career in places such as the Middle East, the Pentagon and the Air Force Academy, where he was professor and chair of the geography department. He retired from the Air Force in 1991 and joined the Northwest faculty in 1992. Barnes became geology/geography department chair in 1993, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and provost in 2001.

He was scheduled to retire next summer but said he couldn’t pass up the offer to return to Colorado. ■

Baldrige team makes second site visit

N

orthwest received a weeklong site visit by a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award evaluation team in late October.

The University is one of only two educational institutions in the nation picked for a Baldrige visit, the final step before award winners are announced by the White House in November.

Northwest also received a site visit in 2003.

Established in 1987, the Baldrige award recognizes U.S. businesses, service industries, schools and health care institutions that work to measure and improve quality by identifying best practices resulting in improved efficiency, service and client satisfaction.

“Our Culture of Quality approach is really very straightforward,” said Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard. “First, we make sure we understand what our students need to know and do to be successful in today’s world. Then we compare our performance with 41 institutions across the nation.”

The Baldrige team came to Northwest, Hubbard said, because the University’s performance is measurably better than that of its competitors.

“In simple terms, we can prove that a student is uniquely advantaged if they attend Northwest. That is the acid test for educational quality,” he said.

Dr. David Oehler, director of assessment, information and analysis, said that, win or lose, competing for the Baldrige award – and especially reaching the site visit level – is a valuable exercise because of the feedback provided by the team.

Such feedback allows the University to improve the way it carries out its mission of providing the best education possible for students. ■

The Station The Station, formerly the Univeristy Conference Center and Taylor Commons, has been completely renovated into a state-of-the-art gathering place for students. The facility serves as a community building with meeting rooms and study space, a coffee shop and convenience store. The front desk and convenience store are open 24 hours a day. ■

Dr. B.D. Owens ’59, the only Northwest president who was also a graduate of the school, returned to campus to give the summer commencement address.

President emeritus addresses graduates

N

orthwest President Emeritus Dr. B.D. Owens addressed the class of 2004 during this summer’s commencement ceremony.

Owens was the University’s president at the time of the Administration Building fire in 1979. He played a prominent role in rallying the University during that disastrous time while at the same time persuading the governor and Legislature to approve $13.8 million to support the reconstruction of the building and several additional building projects on campus.

Owens, a native of Worth County in northwest Missouri, graduated from Northwest in 1959. In 1977, he and his wife, Sue Wright Owens ’57, became president and first lady of Northwest.

After retiring from Northwest in 1984, Owens became president of St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine in 2001. Today he serves St. Matthew’s as its chief financial officer, chairman of the University Planning and Development Council and president of St. Matthew’s Auxiliary Services. ■

President celebrates 20 years at Northwest

D

r. Dean L. Hubbard, who has become a symbol of Northwest’s leadership role in Missouri higher education, observed his 20th anniversary as president this summer. He arrived on campus on Aug. 1, 1984, and immediately set plans in motion to improve student achievement though technology and quality management – the latter initiative laying the foundation for the University’s award-winning Culture of Quality.

Tom Carneal, a retired history professor and department chair, was on the faculty when Hubbard arrived.

“Dr. Hubbard brought tremendous leadership,” Carneal said, “and he brought us new ideas – from the Electronic Campus to the Culture of Quality. These things pushed us forward.”

Both the Culture of Quality and the Electronic Campus came to fruition in 1987, three years after Hubbard came to Northwest.

The Electronic Campus might not have been revolutionary, but it was ahead of its time because of Hubbard’s vision and that of Dr. Jon Rickman, now vice president for information systems. The project and its name became defining standards.

In fact, other institutions have adopted the same terminology for similar initiatives.

“Today, just as I did in the early stages of the Electronic Campus, I see the same consistent values being carried forward in our president’s leadership,” Rickman said. “Dr. Hubbard has always been a great visionary in terms of what an institution can expect from technology while sorting through the fluff for what is really needed, not just what is wanted. He continuously demonstrates his desire to serve the students with the applications of technology they will need as tools to survive in the 21st century.”

As the Culture of Quality flourished, Northwest won two Missouri Quality Awards and earned two site visits for its Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award application.

Hubbard has served on many state and national boards, written several books and has spoken to groups and organizations worldwide.

Before coming to Northwest, Hubbard was president of Union College in Lincoln, Neb. He holds degrees from Stanford University (Ph.D.);

Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea (Korean language); and Andrews University (bachelor’s and master’s).

ALETA HUBBARD

As Northwest’s first lady, Aleta Hubbard has proven to be a gracious hostess and energetic organizer on behalf of the University and Maryville communities.

From her headquarters at the Thomas Gaunt House, Hubbard has entertained students, faculty, staff and many world figures and celebrities. Her guests have included Lech Walesa, Maya Angelou, Robert Kennedy Jr., Jesse Jackson and Dave Barry.

She has also overseen renovations at the Gaunt House, which is listed on the National Register and has served as the official residence for nine Northwest presidents and their families.

Hubbard also helps lead a number of important civic initiatives. Organizations that have benefited from her service include the Maryville Chamber of Commerce, Maryville Revitalization Task Force, the Nodaway County United Way and the former Nodaway Arts Council.

She also founded the campus group Beautifying Residences Using Student Help (BRUSH), which paints and refurbishes the homes of people unable to do so for themselves. ■

verything’s bigger in Texas, and Texans will be the first to tell you that. They’ve got big belt buckles, the big D and big hearts. So because of his size alone, Seth Wand ’03 fits right in. At 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he wears a size 16 shoe, and his size 20 wedding ring was custom made with a hinge to accommodate his massive knuckles. His favorite snack? A steak dinner at midnight.

Size definitely matters in Texas, and that’s one reason why the NFL’s Houston Texans are counting on the big offensive left tackle to create some on-field magic and let the rest of the league know they don’t mess with Texas.

The third-round draft pick is the first Northwest graduate to have a starting position in the NFL, and as such, he has a multi-million dollar responsibility – protecting the blindside of quarterback David Carr.

But other than his NFL build, big No. 78, or Wando as his teammates call him, defies the stereotype of a professional athlete in the public consciousness.

For one thing, playing in the NFL was not a childhood dream for Wand. In fact, he doesn’t consider himself a sports fan.

“I never watched football growing up,” he said. “I never had a favorite team or player because I just didn’t follow it. I never played football until my brother played in high school, and I only played because he did. I was good at it, so I kept on playing, and then I got a scholarship to Northwest and all of a sudden I’m drafted, and now here I am in the NFL. “There are only 53 guys on the Texans, and there are probably 53,000 guys who wish they could be on an NFL team. Playing on this level is just not something I

thought about when I was growing up.”

Unlike the outspoken, flashy athletes often seen on the highlight shows, he’s shy, laidback, soft spoken and down to earth. He drives a GMC pickup truck, has a soft spot for cats and spends his free time playing video games.

“The only reason I know the NFL teams, what divisions they are in and some of the big time players is from playing football video games as a kid,” Wand said. “Joe Montana on the video games would be really good, and when he threw the ball to Jerry Rice, Rice would always catch it.”

Above all, he has remained level-headed – especially considering a few years ago he was sacking groceries and now has a three-year contract that nets a sevenfigure income.

A rigorous weight training program allows Wand to maintain his enormous size and strength.

Before coming to Northwest, Wand was a “small” 240-pound defensive lineman at Springfield’s Catholic High School, and “all I ever did was run over everybody,” he said.

Northwest’s coaching staff convinced him his body was built for the offensive line.

They knew what they were talking about.

“Besides his massive size, he’s got feet like a ballerina,” said Northwest offensive line coach Bart Tatum who persuaded Wand to give Northwest a shot. “He’s very diligent and treats football like a craft. All you have to do is tell him something one time and he’ll remember it and execute it on the field.”

The coach/athlete relationship has progressed to a friendship. Wand and Tatum continue to talk on the phone every week.

“He’s as nice, as gentle and as kind of a human being as you’ll ever find,” Tatum said. “But, you don’t have a starting position in the NFL if you’re not a physical specimen who’s mentally and physically tough.”

tackle and garnered many o-line accolades throughout his college career. He was named an All-American first team selection by the NFL Draft Report and competed in the 2003 Senior Bowl – a game featuring the country’s best senior collegiate football players and top NFL draft prospects.

“I think I got the NFL coaches’ attention when I played in the Senior Bowl,”

Wand said. “I had a good first day of practice, and I played well in the game.

That was probably my big break.”

During his senior year at Northwest, Wand was flooded with phone calls, letters and packages from agents throughout the country wanting to represent him.

Wand’s life was soon on the fast track.

that caught the scouts’ attention, Wand and Beth Reuters ’02, ’03, whom he later married, flew to New York City for the NFL draft.

“When it was announced that I was picked in the third round by the Texans, ESPN was on a commercial break. When they returned to the TV coverage, it was like ‘oh yeah, and the Texans drafted Seth Wand from Northwest Missouri State.’ I immediately got a bunch of phone calls and everything was a whirlwind.”

The chaos quickly settled, and the next week Wand was back in Maryville to take his finals and attend the commencement ceremony in Bearcat Arena where he graduated with a degree in management information systems.

As a rookie last season, Wand not only had to learn unfamiliar plays and NFL routines, he also had to endure a rite of passage – hazing. Fortunately for him, the Texans have only been around for two years so there’s not a long tradition of pranks on the young guys.

a road game, I had to go get the entire offensive line 100 chicken tenders from Popeye’s Chicken right after the game,” he said. “I was fast and efficient and got a lot of compliments from the line, so I guess I won some points with them. On some teams they tie the rookies to the goal post or throw you in the cold tub or make you stand up and sing. It’s all in good fun, but I’m glad I didn’t have to do anything like that.”

Despite the minor hazing, Wand’s teammates have welcomed him to the team.

“The offensive line is a pretty close group of guys,” he said. “We try to go out to dinner once a week, and we play video games in the players lounge every chance we get. It’s encouraging for me to be around these guys because they have such good character. Everyone on the team is there for one single purpose – to help each other win football games.”

Other than winning football games, the Houston Texans also expect their players to perform community service – something

“Last year I went to a hospital and talked to some kids and also to a school,” he said. “Grandma (Barbara) Bush was there, so that was pretty cool. I’ve been to several events were you sign autographs; I recently participated in an airplane towing contest; and I’ve been a part of a deal where people pay several hundred dollars a plate just to sit and eat with a Texans player.”

While signing autographs, rubbing elbows with high profile personalities and a comfortable lifestyle are all part of the job, Wand only seeks one thing.

“I just want respect from my peers,” he said.

“That, and a Super Bowl ring would be nice,” Beth quickly added.

They’ll have to make that ring custom, of course. Size 20. ■

wo leaders in Northwest’s Office of University Advancement and Alumni Relations have recently left Northwest for similar positions at different higher education institutions.

Lance Burchett, NorthLance Burchett west’s former vice president for university advancement, is now employed at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., where he is the vice president of development and alumni affairs. Under Burchett’s leadership, the Northwest Foundation raised more than $36 million for The Campaign for Northwest, the University’s first formal capital campaign launched in 2002.

“Lance moved our program to an entirely new level,” said Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard. “In fact, we are now a fund-raising leader

among our type of institution in the United States.”

Orrie Covert has been named Northwest’s new vice president for University advancement. He will begin his duties in January.

Mike Johnson, NorthMike Johnson west’s former director of alumni relations, now works at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., where he is the executive director of the alumni association.

Johnson worked at Northwest since 1985 and was the director of alumni relations since 1995.

orthwest’s chemistry department has received more than $200,000 to fund equipment purchases and chemistry scholarships from the estate of Mary Marie Smith ’45, who died in May. Through a lifetime gift of $30,000, Smith had also established in 2003 the Louise Smith Gillis ’32 Scholarship Fund, in honor of her late sister, as a recruiting tool for a deserving student majoring in family and consumer sciences.

“Our family believed in education,” Smith said prior to her death. “Louise would be proud to know that, in her name, students will receive an opportunity to gain a college degree.”

Graduating from Northwest has certainly been a family affair for the three Smith sisters. Despite having their college careers financed through their aunt, Effie King, the sisters could not afford – in money or time – to return home to Blythedale very often. What would be a 65-mile, one-hour trip by today’s standards was an all-day adventure via train for the sisters.

Because their father was ill, Smith did not

immediately start college after graduating from Bethany High School in 1941. After his death in 1941, she began classes at Northwest. During the summer of 1944, Smith was one of the first women hired at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Kansas City. As a lab assistant, her starting salary was $175 a month. She saw no need to give up such a good job and return to her last year of college, but Gillis saw it differently and insisted that she return and graduate from Northwest. Smith graduated in 1945. For 37 years thereafter, she served as a laboratory chemist for Phillips.

Following her retirement, Smith did volunteer work for 20 years at the Johnson County Kansas Public Library and for Pets for Life.

Graduating from Northwest has continued to be a Smith tradition. Besides the three sisters, other Smith Northwest alumni include a nephew, a niece and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

“I owe my college degree to my sister, Louise,” Smith said. “I am proud that I can now help return the favor of helping shape other young people’s futures.” ■

All scholarship recipients are selected by the University based on a combination of need and merit.

Employee profile: Michelle Alsbury ’85

DST employee Michelle Alsbury ‘85, a native of Stanberry, is the friend, co-worker and volunteer who makes friends easily.

When she is not with friends, she is showing her true colors, Parrothead style.

Alsbury is a Jimmy Buffett fan (also called a Parrothead).

“I fly a Buffett flag and a Northwest flag at my home in Gladstone. I tell everyone to look for the flags – I live at the corner of Bearcat and Buffett,” Alsbury said. “My friends tell me I never meet a stranger. It doesn’t matter if they’re a Bearcat or a Parrothead – it’s always fun!”

A merchandising graduate, Alsbury is now a client service representative with DST. When she’s not working, she stays busy as president of Northwest’s Kansas City Alumni Chapter.

“I enjoy the time Michelle Alsbury ’85 I spend volunteering,” she said. “The common thread for all of us associated with the alumni chapter is that we have a great love for Northwest.

There are so many ways to give back by volunteering your time – it’s very rewarding and great fun!”

Many Northwest graduates have reunited as employees of Kansas City-based DST Systems.

Gift creates theatre competition

P

lay-goers understand that theatre – watching it or performing it – can have a dramatic impact on your life. According to the American Alliance of Theater and Education, studies prove that integrating the arts into education enhances a student’s development and performance.

However, when budgets shrink amid challenging economies, the arts may suffer.

DST Systems Inc. has long been, and continues to be, a supporter of the arts in may ways, including financially. DST’s recent $10,000 gift for the Theatre Production Series at Northwest will create a national playwriting competition.

The scripts, which will target youth and family audiences, will emphasize positive choices and character traits. The winning script will be produced on the Northwest campus and will also tour to schools and other civic organizations.

Dr. Theo Ross, chairman of the communication, theatre and language department, said Northwest is thankful to DST Systems for its recognition of how important arts and education are to society.

“This gift will allow the Northwest theatre program to take plays with themes of positive social values directly to youth where their message can be incorporated into the school’s classroom curriculum,”

Ross said. “University students will be able to observe the creation of a theatrical event from its inception and to have the pre-professional experience of touring a stage production to many different venues.”

The company sees the big picture when education and the arts connect with the world of business.

“Education and the arts are important components of the overall health and vibrancy of a metropolitan area, just as well-educated associates are important to the ongoing creative and innovative processes at companies and organizations,” said Joan Horan, vice president. “Business and the arts complement each other.”

DST, located in downtown Kansas City, was established in 1969 to develop an automated recordkeeping system for the mutual fund industry. DST has supported the industry’s continued growth and has become the largest provider of third-party shareholder recordkeeping services in the United States.

Through the years, DST has remained a solid recruiter of Northwest graduates – at least 70 alumni currently work at the company.

“A number of Northwest graduates have developed successful careers at DST, and we hope that Northwest students will consider DST a potential employer upon their graduation,” Horan said. ■

feel fortunate to have graduated from Northwest in 1957. The education I received from Northwest has served me well over 47 years. When the opportunity came for me to participate in the centennial campaign, it was an easy decision. To give something back to a University that helped me better myself personally and professionally has been a privilege.

I am aware that campaigns are successful if you have large gifts committed to areas of interest both for the donor and the University.

I am also aware that it takes a large number of committed alumni and friends to make annual gifts throughout the campaign in order to be successful. It is the number of people giving that gives spirit to our Northwest community. It sends a message to Northwest’s greater community that we have an active group of people supporting an important University.

We have done well in committed dollars to our centennial campaign. We do have a number of goals that are still a challenge, and an effort is being made to realize them before our campaign is completed.

My wife, Sue, and I are Northwest graduates and appreciate our education and the opportunities the University has given us. We don’t live in northwest Missouri; we don’t even live in the state of Missouri. It might sound corny, but Northwest still lives in us. I hope it still lives in you.

Let’s keep breaking records in giving throughout the centennial campaign. If you have not made a gift to the campaign, I invite you to join.

nce again, Northwest achieved extraordinary levels of private support during the 2003-04 fiscal year.

The cultivation of private support is due not only to the support of thousands of alumni and friends, but also to the phenomenal involvement of the campus academic leadership in The Campaign for Northwest. Twenty-one prospect managers (cabinet members, deans, faculty and other University staff members) as well as countless volunteers were responsible for the flurry of fund-raising activity that resulted in more than $35 million in contributions and commitments as of June 30, 2004 – halfway through the Campaign and $14 million more than the original goal.

While exceeding the overall goal so early in the Campaign surprised many, the University and the Foundation remain committed to ensuring that every component of the Campaign has reached its goal by the centennial celebration in 2005-06.

Such feats could not have been reached without the commitment of so many. As the graphs demonstrate, about 20 times a week a Northwest prospect manager engages a potential donor.

A scholarship has been established in the name of the late Paul Marfice, a master watchmaker/jeweler in Maryville for many years.

The Paul Marfice Scholarship Fund Paul Marfice, the fourth in a family of 11 children, chose to pursue his interests in watchmaking following his graduation from high school and four years in the U.S. Navy. His first training came via a correspondence course in Chicago, and his earliest repairs were made in his father’s shop by the light of a coal oil lamp. Formal training followed for Paul at the Kansas City School of Watchmaking and, later, jewelry training at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Beginning in 1967, Paul worked at the Maryville shop he and his wife, Joan Johnson Marfice ’77, would purchase in 1976. The couple’s decision proved to be a wise investment. Marfice Jewelry served thousands of citizens of Maryville and the surrounding communities for the next 23 years.

Following Paul’s death, Joan established The Paul Marfice Scholarship in 1999 with the blessing of her sons, James (attd. ’74-’75) and Joseph (attd. ’82-’84).

“It was James who first encouraged this tribute to his father,” Joan said. “He also suggested that preference be given to first-generation college students as would have been Paul’s situation had he chosen to attend college.”

This endowed award assists entering freshmen, with the potential for renewal, as it recognizes their scholastic and civic participation and provides extra financial assistance to offset demonstrated need.

To show her appreciation for their former patrons who played such a role in their lives, Joan opened the award to graduates from all high schools in Nodaway, Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Worth or Andrew counties in Missouri and Page or Taylor counties in Iowa.

“It is through the support of our customers that the means came which allowed me to establish this scholarship in Paul’s name,” Joan said.

The Dustin McCurdy Memorial Scholarship Growing up on a farm near Bridgewater, Iowa, and attending the Cumberland & Massena Community School, Dustin McCurdy was interested in the usual Midwestern pastimes – hunting, fishing and athletics. By 1997, Dustin made the progression to Northwest to study broadcasting and public relations. He broadcast high school games at Maryville’s KNIM radio station and hosted “The Locker Room” show on the campus radio station. Always exhibiting a strong work ethic, Dustin’s free time was spent working at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Maryville.

In the years following Dustin’s sudden death in 2001, the classmates who treasured his friendship and witnessed his ever-present love of life have since graduated. Yet, Dustin’s collegiate spirit and Northwest pride will forever be celebrated thanks to the ongoing efforts of his parents, Mike and Sandy McCurdy.

“In going off to college, Dustin was on his own, and he was making his own life at Northwest,” Sandy said. “While it was hard to let him go, it was great to see him maturing. The scholarship captures and celebrates Dustin’s time and experience at Northwest – which he really loved.”

Along with memorials given by family and friends to endow The Dustin McCurdy Memorial Scholarship, the McCurdys coordinate an annual golf tournament in Anita, Iowa. The scholarship provides extra financial assistance to offset the demonstrated need of a Northwest student majoring in broadcasting.

First preference is given to a student working at KZLX and second preference for work at KXCV. Alumni or friends who have a special memory of Dustin and/or of the broadcasting and public relations programs in the Department of Mass Communication are encouraged to support the scholarship fund so that future generations can benefit from a Northwest education.

“We appreciate all your efforts with the scholarship and with keeping Dustin’s memory,” the McCurdys said. “You just don’t know how much it means to us.” ■

James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311, also known at the time as the Nodaway County Normal Bill.

Fighting against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

The first building erected on campus was Academic Hall, now known as the Administration Building. Its commanding location is situated on the highest point of land between Omaha and St. Louis on the old Wabash Railroad line, 1,163 feet above sea level. Five cut-leaf birches stood at the site like sentinels, prompting faculty and students to describe the Normal School as being located “behind the birches.”

The Bell Tower Society

In 1965, Dr. Robert P. Foster announced plans to build a Bell Tower as a memorial to deceased alumni, former faculty members and those from the University’s family who died representing our country. After years of raising money, ground was finally broken in the fall of 1970 and the sounds of chiming bells greeted students returning for the fall semester of 1971.

Lifetime Giving The Long Walk Society

Recognizes donors who have contributed between $25,000 and $99,999 in lifetime gifts.

The original architect’s plans for the campus, which were modeled after Cambridge University, included a large quadrangle, marked on the most northern point by the Administration Building, with all future campus buildings built facing the quadrangle.

While the original plans were never realized, the first sidewalk built from the entrance at Fourth Street/College Avenue ran straight up to the front door of the Administration Building. Known as the Long Walk, songs were even sung about the long walk.

The Fifth District Normal School opened in 1905, offering two-year programs to educate teachers for the region.

The name was changed to Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 as the curriculum began to focus on four-year programs. As its prominence as a regional institution began to grow and the fields of study continued to expand, the name was again changed to Northwest Missouri State College in

1949. Finally, as the breadth of the programs continued to increase, especially graduate studies, the name Northwest Missouri State University was approved in 1972. No matter the formal name, the institution has always been known by its alumni and friends as Northwest.

Efforts to bring a normal school – a training school for teachers in the public schools – to northwest Missouri actually began in 1874. After many years of struggle in the state Legislature, local residents were finally successful in 1905 as House Bill 311 and Senate Bill 114 were passed and signed into law by Gov. Joseph W. Folk.

For 14 years, the institution was known as the Fifth District Normal School and graduated hundreds of teachers who served the region.

We catch up with Irma Merrick and Ward Rounds.

Retired faculty experience life outside of classroom IRMA MERRICK

I

rma Merrick has been retired from the Northwest faculty since 1987. However, as a cashier in the J.W. Jones Student Union for the past 17 years, her welcoming smile and cheerful demeanor have continued to radiate through campus.

Merrick, who graduated from Northwest with an education degree in 1949 followed by a master’s degree in physical education in 1970, began her career as a physical education teacher. After working at Eugene Field Elementary School in Maryville, she began teaching at Horace Mann in 1968.

“I really enjoyed working with the kids there,” Merrick said. “Since it was PE, I got to do a lot of fun things with them.”

Merrick continued to teach at Horace Mann and later taught golf at Northwest. She remained at Horace Mann until retiring in 1987.

While retirement is often a time to relax and forget about work, Merrick had no such thoughts in mind for herself.

“I’m not a sitter,” Merrick said. “I’ve had to work

all my life, so I’m truly thankful to still be able to get up and come to work every day.”

Merrick said that although she misses teaching, she enjoys many aspects of retirement.

“I’ve got more time now to do other things,” Merrick said, “like teaching my Sunday school class, singing in the choir at church and serving on committees. Plus, I really enjoy being around the kids every day.”

Now entering her 18th year as a cashier, the 76-year-old Merrick has no plans for slowing her routine. She aims to continue her job as a cashier and remain active in the community for many days to come.

“I’m content with what I’m doing,” she said.

“Hopefully the good Lord allows me to have the health to keep doing this for some time.” ■

Although “officially” retired since 1987, Irma Merrick ’49, ’70 continues to have a presence on the Northwest campus.

WARD ROUNDS

D

uring his 25 years as a music professor at Northwest, Ward Rounds shared the gift of music with many. Now, after nearly 20 years of retirement, his love for music thrives more than ever.

Rounds began his career at Northwest as band director in 1960 while also instructing classes such as brass methods and percussion techniques.

Though he has been retired since 1985, Rounds reflects on his days as a faculty member with a sense of joy and accomplishment.

“My time at Northwest was a very pleasant experience because of the students,” Rounds said.

“Many of them came from small communities where they grew up doing chores, so they came in with a good work ethic.”

Music still permeates Rounds’ life on a daily basis. Shortly after retiring, he began receiving phone calls from individuals who wanted to learn to play the trumpet, asking if he would be willing to give them lessons. He began by giving private

lessons at his home. Now he has weekly appointments teaching the basics of brass instruments to young aspiring musicians.

“I have students who come from as far away as Stanberry and Fairfax,” he said. “Many aspire to play at the high school and college levels. It’s still a lot of fun.”

If bringing up the next generation of local brass enthusiasts doesn’t keep him busy enough, Rounds still manages to find time to relax and enjoy one of his other favorite hobbies – piloting small airplanes.

“It’s nothing like driving a car,” he said. “You can’t just jump in it and start. I’ve been doing a thing recently where I’ll take some students up in the plane after they graduate. It’s a whole different experience for them.” ■

espite unseasonably cool temperatures, more than 100 alumni and friends gathered around fire pits at the Alumni House for the 2004 Summer Bash All-Alumni Reunion on July 24.

Attendees enjoyed a hospitality social with emeriti faculty, barbecue and live music by Steve Schrier ’74, Val Goodrich ’85 and the Jerry Forney Blues Band. Partnering with the Maryville Festival of the Arts, those in attendance also

strolled the city square and viewed booths that featured pottery, paintings, jewelry and more.

The Centennial Summer Bash is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 23, 2005. The University will be celebrating 100 years, and all alumni and friends are encouraged to celebrate at the Summer Bash. Formerly known as Rickenbrode Stadium, home games are now played in Bearcat Stadium. The change was proposed by anonymous donors who wanted the name to honor everyone who was involved in the completion of a series of stadium improvements.

Basketball Preview

T

he 2004-05 Bearcat basketball teams have a tough act to follow.

Last season was arguably the best basketball season in Bearcat history. The men’s and women’s teams both won the Sonic/MIAA Postseason Basketball Tournament Championship, both advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and the men’s squad reached the Elite Eight for the second time in three seasons.

Men’s Head Coach Steve Tappmeyer will need to replace MIAA Most Valuable Player Kelvin Parker in the backcourt. However, a strong

nucleus of returners will help in that endeavor.

Seniors Sky Wilson, Jesse Shaw, Byron Jackson and Bilal Clarance, along with junior Austin Meyer and sophomore Victor James bring plenty of experience to the team.

Meanwhile, the Bearcat women will be almost completely rebuilt. Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer’s squad loses eight seniors, all of whom contributed heavily to Northwest’s run to the MIAA title last season. Senior Ashely Poptanycz and juniors Laura Friederich and Meghan Blay are the only players returning with significant playing time. ■

hree years ago, and under surprising circumstances, Sam Mason ’88 discovered he possessed a hidden talent. Today, he receives several calls a week from individuals requesting his work.

After he gave his daughter an art set one Christmas, Mason got the urge to pick up the brushes and start putting color to the canvas. By the time he was finished, he had completely replicated a painting he had on a wall in his home.

“I’ve always been interested in art, but this was a hidden talent,” Mason said He began experimenting with various types of painting, when a moment of sheer boredom inspired him to pursue the art-form known as pointillism – creating an entire picture using a series of tiny, colored ink dots.

He is a two-time winner of the Midwest Fiction Prize, and his stories have been published by several literary magazines including the North Dakota Quarterly and the South Dakota Review. He is a journalism professor at Black Hills State University in South Dakota.

and it started to go a little long,” Mason said. “I took a pen and started sketching on the back of a piece of paper using little dots.”

Surprised at how well the sketch turned out, Mason began dabbling with pointillism on more meaningful projects such as fully detailed portrait of his mother and father in-law’s home and which he presented to them as a Christmas gift.

Mason’s current project is a recreation of the Liberty square, divided into a series of four drawings. He expects each 9-by-28 inch drawing to take anywhere from 150 to 200 hours.

“Pointillism looks tedious to do,” Mason said.

“But it is actually very relaxing because it causes me to focus.”

Although his newfound passion for pointillism is in higher demand all the time, it still remains just an enjoyable hobby for Mason. He currently manages distribution services for Banta Publications, a magazine printing company in Liberty where he lives with his wife and three children. ■

Outdoor enthusiast braves the rapids

M

ost Northwest graduates become familiar with the term “getting your feet wet” during their early years in the workforce. T.J. Jenkins ’95 decided to take that phrase literally.

After graduation, Jenkins worked in Atlanta doing freelance video production for Coca-Cola and Turner Networks. In 1996 he headed to West Virginia to brave the rapids of the Gauley River as a white-water rafting guide.

“I quit my job, put my stuff in storage and lived in a tent,” he said. “Everyone told me I was crazy. It felt like jumping off a bridge into the fog.

I didn’t know if I would be able to eat or live.”

But Jenkins persevered and quickly became acquainted with other outdoor enthusiasts.

“It’s a very tribal and close atmosphere among the guides,” he said. “You really learn to trust each other.”

It was this kind of trust along with his newfound experience that would one day save Jenkins’ life.

During one of his most dangerous experiences, Jenkins was trapped in what is known as the “room of doom.” He lost control of his raft and collided with the infamous Knife Rock, an undercut rock with a cavity that creates a violent undertow.

“My raft flipped over, and I got pulled down for what seemed like forever,” he said. “It ended up being just over a minute, but it was almost the end of me.”

Jenkins was able to hold his breath until he floated down the river to more calm waters.

Foregoing the rafting experience for awhile, Jenkins took up snowboarding in Colorado and divided his time between the mountains and the Gauley River.

On a whim, Jenkins went to Las Vegas, only to run into his former college roommates.

“They talked me into staying in Las Vegas after I crashed on their couch,” he said.

Jenkins works at Fox 5 News and The Art Institute of Las Vegas teaching video production.

“I have a great job, and I certainly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my college buddies,” he said, “and I can still go work the rivers with my weekend-warrior friends.” ■

Dr. Virgil Albertini served Northwest for 34 years as a professor of English before retiring in 1999.

His wife, Dolores, was a librarian at Northwest and sponsored Gamma Sigma Sigma. The two co-authored Towers in the Northwest, a history of the University from 1956 to 1980. Sponsor of many campus organizations during his tenure and a past recipient of the Northwest Turret Award and the Distinguished Emeritus Faculty Award, Virgil served as faculty athletic representative for 17 years. The Albertinis, known for their dedication to students, have insured accessibility to future generations of Bearcats.
