C A L E N DA R & E V E N TS | 5 JUNE 5 - 7 CLASSIC MARINERS REGATTA Hosted by Northwest Maritime Center in cooperation with the Port Townsend Sailing Association and now in its fourth decade, the Classic Mariners Regatta is for wooden sailboats of all sizes and shapes. $45 entry fee. Tickets to a delicious, informal Saturday night BBQ may be purchased for an additional $18.

JULY 18 - 19 POCKET YACHT PALOOZA Celebrate Camp Cruising Watercraft at this two-day gathering of unique small-craft designs. More than half of the 75+ boats displayed are sail-powered; others are rowed, paddled or powered by modest engines. This free public boat show goes from10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday.

Sunday morning participating boat owners will hit the water together, rowing, sailing, paddling and/or powering across Port Townsend Bay for a picnic lunch together on the beach. Bring a boat (or two) to the Pocket Yacht Palooza!

eaturing more than 300 wooden boats, dozens of indoor and outdoor presentations and demonstrations, a who's who of wooden boat experts and thousands of wooden boat enthusiasts, there's something to do, someone to meet, or a boat to board at every turn. Expanded a little each year, the festival honors tradition while also inviting energetic debate and demonstrations on the latest innovations in boatbuilding, equipment, and skills.

The schedule of presentations, races, music, and all other events will be available online before the festival. Printed programs, packed with festival information, are available at Northwest Maritime Center several weeks before the festival weekend and at the entry.

DROP-IN ACTIVITIES All year long we offer free activities that are great stand-alone experiences, and will whet your appetite for more in-depth learning.

Boat rides, tours, visits to a real training simulator, fantastic lectures from renowned authors and nautical luminaries—there’s a lot to do.

LECTURES & PRESENTATIONS From October through April, every third Wednesday at noon, we offer a Wooden Boat Wednesday free lecture. The list of topics is extensive, from travelogues of cruising adventures to firsthand accounts of boatbuilding projects, and often features a nautical author presenting on their latest book.

Seats are on a first come, first served basis, so come early.

Once a year the Weissblum Maritime Heritage Lecture Series brings in special speakers for evening presentations.

PILOTHOUSE SIMULATOR Northwest Maritime Center is home to a state-ofthe-art TRANSAS maritime simulator. Much like a flight simulator, this is a tool designed for training professional mariners for their roles as officers in charge of a watch and for radar use, navigation and ship handling. Our simulator utilizes the same training software used by all maritime colleges in the US, and is the only one that trains both professional and recreational mariners. ELECTRONIC CHART AND DISPLAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS (ECDIS) This USCG-approved course meets the training requirements for an STCW endorsement in both the operational and management level use of ECDIS. Mariners serving aboard vessels 500 tons or more to which STCW applies and fitted with an ECDIS must obtain this endorsement prior to December 31, 2016 to renew their USCG credentials.

COMMUNITY BOATSHOP Northwest Maritime Center and the Wooden Boat Foundation Boatshop is proud to promote the craft of boatbuilding by providing affordable shop access to both aspiring and seasoned boat owners and boatbuilders in the local community.

DAY USE PROGRAM Successful completion of the Introduction to Shop Tools class will allow students access to rent the tools in the boatshop. An excellent way to get projects completed without having to go out and purchase large and expensive tools. Both professional woodworkers and hobby enthusiasts can benefit from this program.

The Day Use Program is intended for tool use onsite only; tools may not be borrowed or removed from the shop.

The Annapolis Wherry is modeled after the graceful 19th century livery boats used on the River Thames, and combines breathtaking grace with thoroughbred performance under oars. Solid stability, sea-kindly lines, a buoyant bow and ample flare make it a natural choice for rowing in choppy conditions. In this class, pre-cut hull planks are scarfed together, connected to the frames and each other with copper wire stitches, then fixed in place with epoxy fillets.

Next come thwarts, knees, wales, and air tanks. At the end of an absorbing week, students will have learned about stitch-and-glue basics, including epoxy work, fiberglassing, and laminating.

Graceful round-sided lapstrake dories like this seventeen-footer were once the primary recreational craft on the New England coast. Small enough to be rowed by one person, but big enough for tandem rowing with two adults, the Nor’easter tracks well, has a long glide, and stays dry in waves. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, each student will assemble a faithful reproduction in just a week, using plywood and epoxy from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. Stitch-and-glue techniques are used to create lapstrake hulls of traditional appearance.

Enjoy fast rowing with one oarsman or two, or even add a sliding seat unit. By the end of the week these light and strong hulls will be ready for sanding and finishing at home.

The Eastport Pram is one of the most popular small dinghies in the world, easy and satisfying to row and sail. With the help of the instructor, each student will assemble his or her own dinghy from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. The hull utilizes CLC's patented LapStitch construction method in which stitch-andglue techniques are used to create lapstrake hulls of traditional appearance. Planks are glued to length using scarf joints, then are wired together to create the hull shape. By noon on Saturday you’ll have an assembled hull, ready for sanding, and a sailing rig.

BUILD A ROWCRUISER Students build their own 19’ Colin Angus-designed camp-cruising rowboats. Overnight accommodations under the foredeck allow owners to sleep aboard when they don’t want to tent-camp on what might be a rocky shore. RowCruisers have sliding-seat rowing units and attractive wooden outriggers that are made by owners. Construction is stitch-and-glue - from kits with all marine plywood parts pre-cut and employs 6mm mahogany marine plywood for hull panels and 4mm marine plywood for decks.

Build a complete kayak and a paddle with skin-onframe expert Brian Schulz. Assemble the frame, learn to make fast mortise and tenon joints in red cedar, steam bend white oak ribs, then tie the entire thing together with artificial sinew. Spend a day sewing a ballistic nylon ‘skin’ over the frame.

RACE TO ALASKA A new race that pits engineless seamanship against the perils of the Inside Passage. The rules are simple: Get a boat without an engine. Start in Port Townsend. Finish in Ketchikan.

Race to Alaska is a self-supported race in two stages. The first stage is a 24-hour race from Port Townsend to Victoria. Some racers will do only the first stage to test their mettle. Racers who make it to Victoria without assistance qualify for stage 2; Victoria to Ketchikan.

SCHOOL & GROUP PROGRAMS

Northwest Maritime Center offers a variety of program options that provide opportunities for maritime-themed, hands-on learning. Our programs take advantage of Port Townsend and the Salish Sea’s rich cultural and natural history as a way to engage students in learning. Students can learn to row, sail, navigate and work as a team aboard several different vessels. We also offer land-based seamanship and mariner’s skills programs utilizing our waterfront campus, including our pilothouse simulator and boatshop. Students can learn boatbuilding skills and build a boat as a team in one week.

Our fleet of boats includes longboats, Thunderbird sailboats and a hundredyear-old converted lifeboat. Our longboats are replicas of Captain Vancouver’s ships’ longboats that are incredible learning and teambuilding platforms. They include 8 rowing stations and 3 sails. These boats can be used on overnight voyages of up to two weeks in length as well as half or full day programs.

Options include day and multi-day programs with overnight stays in Port Townsend and overnight voyages aboard our historic longboats. We are also able to design custom programs that meet your school or group’s needs.

Northwest Maritime Center’s partnerships with Sound Experience (Schooner Adventuress) and Port Townsend Marine Science Center provide opportunities to fully engage students with our rich regional resources in a captivating and rigorous learning environment.
