Internships for Teens in Portland by KELLEY GARDINER
Any summer job can teach valuable lessons, but an internship has some special benefits that the local ice cream shop doesn’t. “Internships look great on college applications and schools may offer interns high school credit for completing their internship,” points out Emily Whitacre from Saturday Academy. “Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering internships open doors for other internships and job opportunities. Many of our mentors are willing to write recommendations for their ASE interns.” From lab work to teaching to the office and beyond, check out these internships available for teenagers to apply to in and around Portland. There are lots more where this came from—check with your local school or municipality to see if they have lists of available internships.

SATURDAY ACADEMY If you’re looking for a high school apprenticeship in STEM, Saturday Academy’s ASE (Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering) is pretty much the first place to look with their many partnerships—Portland State, OHSU, Oregon State, Bonneville Power Administration, IBM, NOAA—the list goes on. Will you apply to study forestry and native trees? Or maybe DNA manipulation on viruses? Says Clara, a 2019 ASE intern, “This internship has given me more professional experience in a workplace. I have also learned more about how to collaborate with other people in a working environment. I now have a better understanding of what it is like to conduct research in a lab setting.”
YOUTH WEX Summerworks’ Youth WEX (youth work experience) connects diverse youth from underrepresented groups to paid internship opportunities. Students receive free job readiness training before being placed in fields from communications to events to mechanical maintenance. Harranie Chavers had no experience at all before working with the program: “After working a few summers, the SummerWorks program paid off by expanding my horizons and made me confident enough to intern with the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.”

TRACKERS For kids who love getting their hands dirty, working outdoors, or engaging with younger kids, plan ahead to become a Trackers intern. All applicants are required to have a Leaders in Training course or Guild Apprenticeship before becoming full-fledged outdoor educators. It’s not all hikes in the forest—students and parents alike love Trackers because of their high marks for teaching and safety, so interns are held to the same standard.
CITY OF PORTLAND BUREAU OF ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES Students entering 11th or 12th grade, or soon-to-be graduates, who are interested in “natural resources, environmental sciences, pollution prevention, and public service” can apply for an eightweek program with the City of Portland. A combination of field work and office work will give students a great idea of not only how scientists collect data, but also how they present it (Now’s a great time to learn PowerPoint, kids!) and how governments actually function day to day.

TIPS • While you’re looking at internships, double-check age requirements. All the internships we shared have programs for teens, but many organizations offer internships for college students or adults only. • Some internships are paid, some are not, and others require a payment. Know before you apply! • Not quite ready for the commitment of an internship? Start with shortterm volunteer projects or job shadows to give your teen a taste of real-life work experience beyond what’s available to kids their age.
