Editor’s Note My baby is gone. My chubby-cheeked baby who refused to wear anything but dresses from age 2 until 7 is growing up. This month, she becomes a teenager, and I am... overwhelmed. I can no longer carry her up the stairs to bed, and I’m no longer allowed to use pet names. Our dynamic is changing, and in many ways things are harder.

Gifts are problematic. When she was five, she loved anything frilly, pink, and princess-y. Now, though, her interests are varied and harder to pin down. A telescope and Lego’s Women of Nasa set are as welcome as embroidered jeans and lip gloss. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is her need for activity.

When my kids were little, I began to enforce a simple rule: they must study one musical instrument and be involved in one sport. What instrument and what sport is their choice. This, too, has become more complex as they get older. They are more inclined to spend time watching YouTube and messaging friends. It becomes more and more important to find physical activities they can feel invested in.

This issue, we wanted to help parents who are also searching for ways to keep teens moving, enthusiastic, and healthy. Check out our winter teen activity guide, and find something that speaks to them.

How to put the ‘Fun’ Back in Your Teen’s Fitness Routine by LISA WERKMEISTER

Fitness isn’t a high priority for many teens who prefer TV and video games over a jog around the neighborhood. If we want our teens to be healthy and develop good habits that will keep them healthy throughout life, we need to make fitness fun! Below are three simple methods for helping your teen get off the couch, get moving, and stay fit.

FOLLOW THEIR INTERESTS

UNCONVENTIONAL FITNESS FUN

What does your teen like to do? Does she like animals? Have her volunteer at the local animal shelter to walk or play with the dogs in residence. Does your son enjoy drawing? Take him hiking and make sure he brings along his sketch pad.

Maybe your teens would rather spend time with a good book. No problem – take a walk through the park and find a comfortable spot to relax and read for an hour. The trick is to find something that doesn’t feel like a workout while still providing the benefits of healthy movement.

Boredom is a constant complaint for teens trying to get fit. Fitness is about being consistently active, but doing the same thing over and over is a surefire way to lose a teen’s interest. Luckily there’s no shortage of new things your teen can try. Visit an indoor rock climbing gym for a free trial lesson, take a leap at a trampoline park, test your aim at laser tag, or sign up for a local 5k race. Portland hosts many specialty races including color runs, zombie runs, costumed runs, and even obstacle courses that send competitors low crawling through mud.

ORGANIZED SPORTS This is an easy one for most teens. Even small schools have a variety of sports from which to choose. If your school doesn’t offer the sport your teen likes, check out the local YMCA or community center to see what activities they have available. Many offer discounts for teens checking out a new sport or class for the first time. Studies have shown that teens involved in sports not only tend to stay healthier while in school, they are more likely to develop lifelong fitness habits.

Too often, fitness is looked at as something we have to do, not something we want to do. It doesn’t need to be that way. Whether it’s dance, football, martial arts, or cosplay marathons, encourage your teen to get away from the screen and find something that makes them happy to keep moving!

I stand still, my head rushing with words, jokes, movements. The next rowdy student comes over and touches my pomegranate for what feels like the 500th time.

I stand up, exhausted, and smile.

I talk, and soon, I feel like Persephone...I am Persephone.

Hades did capture me and make me his queen, but one look from the fourth grader brings me back.

I shorten my painstakingly detailed monologue, and when I finish, worried that I have bored them, they walk away. I sit down heavily and plant a smile on my face.

I was scared...well, we all were. An hour felt like too long. We all were saying our lines in our head. As I was about to restart my monologue, Ms. Brewer shouted, “They’re coming!” Everyone froze, too scared to even breathe. My mom arrived first, scanning the ballroom before coming to me. I knew it was going to be my mom; it was imperative that she was first. I had even told her that morning that she had to be first. So she came and tapped my tiara.

“I’m Hera...of course, you know --” I had already stumbled. My brain wasn’t working; my palms were sweaty; and I was forgetting. After my mom left and more people came, I seemed to get the hang of it. And just like that, it was over!

Ruthie and Jacob are current seventh graders at Portland Jewish Academy who collectively enjoy writing, cooking, traveling, and acting in and attending theater performances.
