Northwestern Foundation, Inc. Annual Report 2010
Contents Dear Foundation Members: The past 12 months was a period of challenge, opportunity and success for Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Clearly, the ongoing economic downturn has significantly impacted public higher education in Oklahoma, and Northwestern is no exception. State funding for Northwestern continues to decline and the University will be forced to absorb another 5.3 percent cut for fiscal year 2011. In 2002, state funding as a percentage of Northwestern’s general operational budget was nearly 69 percent. Today, that percentage has dropped to 45.1 percent. To compensate for this loss in funding, we have eliminated some positions, cut operational budgets in administrative areas and are exploring ideas on how we may operate even more efficiently than before. Fiscal year 2011 will be the fourth consecutive year that our faculty and staff have not experienced an across-the-board salary increase. I am so proud of the work they have accomplished during these challenging times. This loss in state funding has forced universities to shift more of the cost of a college education to students. After a tuition freeze for the 2010-11 academic year, tuition will increase by 5.5 percent for the 2011-12 year. At the same time, we will increase scholarship support by more than 6 percent. All of these facts and figures are presented to make a singular point – your support of Northwestern is more important now than at any time in the history of the institution. Our ability to move forward in these challenging times will be in large part determined by the support provided by our alumni and friends through contributions to the Northwestern Foundation. Your support of endowed scholarships, faculty chairs, annual giving programs and capital projects provides additional educational opportunities for our students, and at the same time, allows us to keep the cost of a Northwestern education as affordable as possible. One of the great things about serving as president is the opportunity to meet with many of our students. While our young people today are different in many ways, they have the same hopes and dreams that each of us had. They are aware of the support given by those who came before them and they are truly appreciative. I have no other way to say this – our students are special. And just like you – they are Rangers. So on behalf of our students, faculty and staff, let me say thank you for your support of Northwestern. Your continued commitment to the University will allow us to fulfill our mission of education and service to our communities, state and nation. Sincerely,
Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President Northwestern Oklahoma State University Class of 1976

pay it for·ward (pā ĭt fôr’wərd) 1. To honor a good deed by performing an act of kindness for another. Whether through service or financial contributions, alumni, donors and friends are paying it forward at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Scholarship recipients have become scholarship donors. Graduates, thankful for lessons learned, are ensuring the education of future generations. Inspired by a professor or coach, influenced by a department or organization, each gift to Northwestern—no matter how small—is sparked by someone or something. In the pages that follow, eight donors share their stories of what motivates them to not just give back, but pay it forward.
Dear Alumni and Friends:
Dear Friends:
It has once again been my pleasure and privilege to serve as chair of the Northwestern Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation Board and staff remain committed to the values, vision and mission set forth in our strategic plan. We, your board, strive to provide Northwestern with the ability to offer first class education for students by investing responsibly. The Foundation and I are pleased to recognize you, our loyal donors, particularly in a time when charitable giving has declined nationally. Here at Northwestern, we continue to weather the storm, and with your generous support and renewed confidence, we have succeeded in delivering results for the University. In spite of a budget crisis affecting the State of Oklahoma, which reduced Northwestern’s state funding by more than 4 percent, the University has experienced progress we can all be proud of. With an increase of 6.7 percent, enrollment for the 2009 fall semester was at its highest level since 1971. The University’s new agriculture education program no doubt contributed to this growth, and groundbreaking for the Wisdom Agriculture Center took place in the fall. Additionally, for the third year in a row, Northwestern was ranked the top Oklahoma public regional university by U.S. News and World Report. The publication also acknowledged the University’s efforts with a second place ranking for least debt load of graduating students among baccalaureate colleges in the western United States. Only 51 percent of Northwestern students graduate with any student debt, and this can be attributed to your passionate funding of scholarships. This is but a very short list of the achievements accomplished by the University and its outstanding students this past year. I would like to thank the members of the Executive, Investment and Governance Committees for their time and dedication, and you, the donor, for your unending support of Northwestern. This year’s annual report focuses on the idea of paying it forward, and through my role as chair, I am grateful to have had the chance to show my appreciation for the University that gave so much to me by supporting today’s students, faculty and staff. As you read this year’s report, I encourage you to think of what inspires you and who has contributed to your success. I imagine, that like me, you will find Northwestern is high atop the list. Thank you again for the honor of serving you.
As always I want to thank you for being a part of our Northwestern family and allowing me the opportunity to serve in my current capacity. School has just started again and for the fourth year in a row, our enrollment is up. The campus is alive with students. For those of you that are not on our campus regularly, it is always an energizing feeling to see all these young people with their enthusiasm, dreams and aspirations once more covering our campus. Sometimes it makes me forget my age and reminisce of a time when I was a young person on this campus more than 25 years ago. Enrollment is approaching the record numbers of the 1970s, and this would not be possible without your gifts. When I talk to students and young graduates, it is rare that they don’t mention our scholarships and the quality of their experience here at Northwestern. These programs and scholarships would not be possible without your generous investments. As Northwestern continues to grow, we will again look to you to help us progress strategically and provide our students with outstanding scholarship support. As I am sure you are aware, higher education funding has been reduced across the nation. Once reduced, state funding rarely returns to previous levels. The reality is that if Northwestern is to flourish in the next millennium it will be through private funds. The theme of this year’s annual report is “pay it forward.” The concept came from a movie released in 2000 about a young man that does something wonderful for three people without any expectation of reciprocation. He only asks that each of these people do something good for three other people. His goal is to change the world one person at a time. When I thought this over, I realized that people have been doing that very thing at Northwestern for decades. You, our donors, have provided scholarships and other support to thousands of students most of you will never know. These are students that needed the assistance to make their dreams of an education a reality. I would like to challenge everyone to find something you are passionate about and “pay it forward” with both your time and finances. I expect you will be pleased with the results. We may not change the world, but I know we can change our little part of it when we invest in Northwestern. I know it because I see it in the faces of our current students and alumni. If you have not been back to our campus lately, I encourage you to return and experience the growth and excitement occurring here at Northwestern. Give us a call, and we will be honored to take you around and show you the renovations occurring on campus. My hope is we can help you become captured by the excitement, too.
Sincerely,

Kenneth and Sue Fellers know there are a number of worthy students facing difficulties. They also know scholarships can help.
Sue and Kenneth Fellers
Class of ‘64 and Class of ‘63
Established The Kenneth and Sue Fellers Family Scholarship in 2010
At Northwestern, Sue (Hildreth) acquired an appreciation for hard work. She understands the value of a scholarship, having benefitted from the generosity of donors while at Northwestern. She remembers the extra expenses of majoring in music—the lessons, the sheet music, the practice room rental fees. “But for the support of others, I wouldn’t have made it,” she said. Kenneth received scholarships, too, and still remembers what he learned from his family. “One thing I was taught at home was it’s an honor and an opportunity for you to go to school,” Kenneth said. “You take advantage of it.” Receiving scholarships made a difference in the couple’s college experiences, and they are determined to make a difference for today’s students. Pleased to see Northwestern on the rise and with even higher hopes for the University’s future, Kenneth and Sue recalled their time at Northwestern as the best days of their lives. “There are people who cared and helped us get started, and we want to pass it on,” Kenneth said. “I’d just like kids to have the opportunity to reach their goals.” Northwestern united Kenneth and Sue, who married in 1963, and the scholarship they endowed in 2010 unites the
“
couple’s passions. For Kenneth, a math and physics graduate, the scholarship will aid students finding solutions and curing ailments. Sue, a vocal and piano graduate, wished to offer students the opportunity to share in her joy of music and, in return, share that joy with others. Both aspirations provide for the future of northwest Oklahoma.
There are people who cared and helped us get started, and we want to pass it on.”

“Ken and Sue Fellers are a delightful couple,” Dr. Janet Cunningham, University president, said. “I am so pleased that they have chosen to honor their time spent at Northwestern with a scholarship that will help countless students in the future.” Full-time continuing students are eligible for The Kenneth and Sue Fellers Family Scholarship with preference given to those from northwest Oklahoma who demonstrate financial need. “We want to help kids that want to help themselves,” Sue said. In between, he served the country in -Curtis Diel Jr. Iraq during two, yearlong deployments. Prior to beginning classes at Northwestern, Diel had enlisted in the Army Reserve. After going through Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, he was eligible to attend Northwestern on the GI Bill his sophomore through senior years. “I know how beneficial it is to receive money from a program like that,” Diel said. “That’s why I think it’s pretty important to give back to the University through their programs for students.” Returning from his second deployment, Diel had saved some money, and he wanted to get involved. He started contributing to the Millennium Club in 2008 and joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Northwestern Alumni Association as a lifetime member. “After I came back from my last deployment, I had the ability to start giving to

events and looked up to the players as a kid. “It was just kind of a no-brainer,” Diel said. “I wanted to go there.” Even though he was familiar with the University, his experience there wasn’t what he expected—it was even better. “At the same time I was getting a quality education, I was meeting a lot of good people and having a really good time,” Diel said. “I enjoyed the atmosphere at Northwestern. It makes you feel like part of a family. It’s just like family. ” Diel pursued a degree in law enforcement, while enjoying the small university feel and meeting people from all over—from Enid, from Kingfisher, from places in Kansas he’d never heard of. He graduated in 1996 and began working with the Oklahoma Capitol Patrol, a division of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He

those organizations, and I wanted to,” he said. “Since I couldn’t be there at Northwestern all the time, in the community of Alva, I wanted to do anything I could.” But, when Diel does return to the area, he notices a difference. Diel sees improvement, and only expects more to come. “I’ve seen in these last several years the benefit of some of the programs, scholarships, the Millennium Club, things like that,” he said. “Every time I come back
to Northwestern I see something that has changed for the better. It seems like it just improves more and more every year, and I think it’s through the benefit of those programs.” For anyone looking for a good cause, Northwestern’s the place, Diel said. “I think the University is an organization that has not just given to the community of Alva but also to that entire region.”

How an endowment works 1. A donor gives to establish a named endowed scholarship (a $10,000 minimum) in an area of his or her passion.
4. The Foundation Board of Trustees’ Investment Committee invests the donor’s gift in accordance with the Foundation’s investment objectives to maximize returns and minimize risk.
Joretta and James Buckles
Class of ‘61 and Class of ‘62 Millennium Club Gold Members
Without Northwestern, James and Joretta (Shelite) Buckles’ lives may have been much different. The couple, who grew up together, credit the University for helping them achieve many of their lives’ major milestones. After graduating from Dacoma High School one year after another, James and Joretta each made their way to Northwestern just down the road. For James, Northwestern was a place he could get his social studies degree while still helping out on the family farm, and Joretta completed her elementary edu-

to teach in Minneola, Kan. “I attribute that opportunity to Northwestern,” James said. “They were good to me.” In addition to earning the educations that launched their careers, Northwestern gave the couple the ability to educate both of their daughters with ease, they said. “We wouldn’t have been able to do that, I don’t think, if it hadn’t been for Northwestern,” James said. “….to have the financing without the struggles,” Joretta added.
2. The donor works with the Foundation staff to develop criteria for the scholarship and guidelines for its distribution. A scholarship agreement is signed by both parties.
3. The gift is entered into the Northwestern Foundation Endowment.
6. By reinvesting the remainder of the annual return, the scholarship continues to grow and is protected from inflation, providing annual support to Northwestern’s students for decades to come.
For James and Joretta, being members of the Millennium Club is their way of saying thanks. Staying connected to the University that has afforded them so much just seems natural. “I think when a person gives he feels a greater part of the University than if he just stands back,” James said. “It gives him a feeling of investing. You have a different feeling toward a university if you give.” “Northwestern has been good to us from the very beginning to the very end,” Joretta added. Northwestern Foundation

After being drafted and serving four years in the Marine Corps, Rocky Ferrell was looking for something different. At a time of chaos and confusion, he searched for a positive atmosphere and a grounded community, something different from the role he had lived for the last four years. Looking back on his younger years, Alva came to mind. In high school, Ferrell, an Attica, Kan., native, and his school’s band marched in the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Homecoming parade, and after, he had a little time to explore the town. He became familiar with the campus, too, attending music contests at Northwestern. “That memory of how much fun it was in Alva just stayed with me,” Ferrell said. On top of good memories of the campus and community, he recalled respect for his childhood hero—a lifeguard at the An-
“
knowing him and how much of a good person he was. He was a Northwestern college guy.” So when Ferrell arrived in Alva in 1974 with four years in the Marine Corps behind him, he enrolled as a Northwestern college guy. After a few years of pursuing a degree in music education, he returned to the working world but graduated in 1987. “I was lucky I had good teachers here at Northwestern,” Ferrell said. “In my case, the difference between being able to succeed and just giving up was the faculty. Ed Huckeby was instrumental in my staying with it, staying involved in the program, because it wasn’t easy raising a family and going to college at the same time.” Following a lower back injury and emergency surgery, Ferrell’s recovery included chiropractic treatment. Impressed with the art and science of chiropractic, he picked up his remaining prerequisites -Rocky Ferrell and enrolled at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo. During his time at Cleveland, he also earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Park College in Parkville, Mo., and later received certification in acupuncture.

After graduating in 1991, Ferrell opened his chiropractic clinic in Perry. In 2007, Dr. L.L. Demaree, who had encouraged Ferrell to pursue his Doctor of Chiropractic, retired and offered him the position at his Alva clinic. Ferrell took him up on the offer and returned to Alva, splitting his time between Perry and Alva. When a reporter asked Ferrell in 2007 why he was coming back to Alva, one reason he gave was the community support. “You don’t have to go very far to find someone who will help you,” Ferrell said. Ferrell has adopted that attitude, and it inspires his gifts to Northwestern. “The inspiration that I truly believe is
most important is the quality of the education and the quality of the community and the ergonomics of the campus,” Ferrell said. “It wasn’t because of the money I received, I think it was the quality education and the people, the teachers, that inspired me to be a participator.” Ferrell empathizes with students’ struggles, having struggled himself, but he is also committed to improving the community and helping students fight those battles in the form of scholarship support. “I think that the more support you can give to a college student, the better the community is, even if they don’t live here, because word gets out quickly.” Northwestern Foundation

spent the last 28 years working as a guidance counselor, thanks to the persistence of professors at Northwestern, especially Dr. Charles White. “I would not be a guidance counselor today if it hadn’t been for Northwestern professors,” Karen said. “Dr. White saw that in me. I got as good of an education to be an educator as anyone in the nation.” And, the Koehns are determined to give others the opportunity to earn a quality education at Northwestern, too. “That’s how Byron and I were raised,” Karen said. “You do for people that did for you. You do all you can do with what you have.” When Karen graduated from Alva High School, scholarships were few and far between, but that’s changed. “Why wouldn’t I want kids today to have it better than we had?” Karen asked. “A lot of people feel like well, I don’t have any money. Well, if you give $25 and I give $25 and I can get the people down the street to give $25, that’s $75 the Foundation didn’t have to give to scholarships an hour ago.” The Koehns realize, without a lottery win in their future, they probably won’t be leaving Northwestern a million dollar endowment, but they give of what they’ve got. Staying connected and serving Northwestern gives the Koehns something, too—pride and purpose. “I think it’s the relationships you build, not just during your years here, but through years with the community and the people
“
that are involved with Northwestern,” Byron said. “We do this because we like to do it. Serving Northwestern….” “…is a privilege,” Karen said. “We’re pretty loyal.”

Some things never change. Active on campus during their time at Northwestern, Byron and Karen (Bishop) Koehn are still loyal to the University—and it shows. “I think we bleed black and red,” Karen said. “We do.” The Koehns met at Northwestern when baritone-playing Byron was assigned to help Karen learn to play the instrument for the marching band. “The best part of Northwestern was the band because the first day I saw Karen walk in I said, ‘that’s the girl for me right there,’” Byron said. In addition to playing in the band, Karen, an Alva native, was senior class president, a Delta Zeta and Ranger Queen during her

Karen has since traded in her Ranger Queen tiara to serve as Alumni Board president, sell Homecoming buttons and raise funds for Northwestern scholarships.
