Patricia Pixler, student intern for the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association during summer 2018, researched and wrote the three features spotlighting two students and one alumna. Pixler is set to graduate from Northwestern in May 2019, with a double major in English and Psychology and a minor in Writing.

NORTHWESTERN FOUNDATION & ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 1

LETTER FROM THE FOUNDATION CHAIR Every person has a story, a story made richer with experiences and influences. For generations of alumni, Northwestern has been prominent in offering an important part of their story. The influence of faculty, staff, community and fellow students has helped shape all of us in some fashion. As a trustee for the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association, I am afforded the opportunity to meet many of our current students. Dining with students at Donor Dinner events provides evidence that Northwestern continues to offer excellent academics. Visiting with students at one of the annual Thank-A-Thon events, I enjoyed learning about their journeys, their goals and their dreams. I also was impressed by their “attitude for gratitude”. The annual Thank-A-Thon event provides our Northwestern students with the opportunity to have a conversation, via phone calls, with donors.

Handwritten notes also are composed and sent to donors, thanking them for their gifts. This event – soon to be in its eighth year at Northwestern – instills in our students the impact that you, our donors, make on their lives. It is no secret that state support for higher education has substantially declined in recent years. However, the excellent value of education here at Northwestern remains strong and rewarding. In spite of the state budget scenario, our students continue to be well-educated. They are gaining a collegiate experience that influences their character. We continue to graduate excellent men and women. And, we celebrate our successful alumni whose Northwestern experience has supported them in their dreams. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your investment in our students and our Northwestern. Your contribution…your investment…in our students’ lives is critical to their success and the success of our Northwestern. Your gift is a significant part of their story. Thank you.

Sheila Ferrell

Chair, Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association Class of 1978

ANNUAL REPORT

DEAR FRIENDS OF NORTHWESTERN: Dear Friends of Northwestern: I am pleased to have the opportunity to share some thoughts with you as part of the Northwestern Foundation’s Annual Report. Since I spoke to you last year, much has changed. As an institution, the past several years have proved to be a time of great challenge. As the economy of Oklahoma suffered depressed energy prices and the state’s budget was slashed because of falling tax revenue, funding for public higher education in Oklahoma was placed on the chopping block. Entering the 2018 legislative session, out of every dollar cut from the state budget in the preceding three years, 53 cents came from higher education. Today, the level of state funding for Northwestern is the same as it was in the early 1990s. As a result, Northwestern eliminated nearly 20 positions, cut services to students and deferred maintenance to our campus. Despite our best efforts to reduce expenses, we were forced to pass along costs to our students and their families. However, experience led us to believe that economies are cyclical and better times were on the horizon. In the past 12 months, energy prices have risen, legislators have boldly taken action to increase revenue and we enter the 2019 legislative session with a budget surplus. There is an opportunity to begin to reverse some of the damage done…but only with your help. As a supporter of Northwestern, you have been generous with your support. Private giving to the University during the Imagine Northwestern campaign allowed us to continue moving forward, providing opportunities for impactful initiatives all across the University. Now, we also ask for your support in another area. We need you to be a champion for Northwestern. More than ever, your support for Northwestern and public higher education in Oklahoma must resonate through the halls of the State Capitol. As our state’s financial outlook improves, it is imperative that policymakers begin to restore state funding to higher education. In short, it is time for a higher education renaissance in Oklahoma. As alumni and supporters, your voices carry great weight with legislators. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, I ask that you let your legislators know that your private support for Northwestern must be supplemented by public support. Each of you can play a part in this effort. Each of you can make a difference. In this Annual Report, you will read stories of students who overcame hardship to earn a degree from Northwestern. Because of you, we remain a place where dreams are realized and lives are changed forever. For this, we remain ever grateful. Respectfully,

Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President Class of 1976

NORTHWESTERN FOUNDATION & ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 3

LETTER FROM THE CEO: We have amazing students attending our University. On a regular basis, they impress me with their intelligence, kindness, strength, wisdom, motivation, humor or some other trait that we as a culture place great value on. We are living in a time when many in our nation seem to be stressed out, selfabsorbed, self-centered, self-medicated or something worse. It is comforting to be surrounded by a youthful population of learners on our campus who exemplify the positive qualities we find most honorable for citizens and leaders of our country. It should not surprise you that I meet many Northwestern alums who demonstrate these same great qualities refined with years of experience. These conversations are one of the great benefits of my job. Our alums are amazing and so many credit their collegiate experience at Northwestern as launching them in the right direction. Many of our students encountered several challenges just to enroll and arrive on our campus. In this year’s Annual Report, we share with you two stories of students who are facing and overcoming some unique challenges. Another feature celebrates the life-changing impact our donors helped to create with their investment in a 2012 graduate. Our desire is that these stories will confirm your decision to invest in our students.

In life, every one of us has faced and will face challenges. These problems come in different forms, durations and intensities. I believe every trial also is part of our education that shapes us for greater success in the future. Martin Luther King, Jr. said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” As a donor to this University and in support of our students, it should give you great pride that you are investing in a generation set to do amazing things… just as those students who went before them. As a donor, you have helped create continued opportunities for young people to reach their greatest potential with a positive collegiate experience. As a donor to Northwestern, you are literally changing lives for the better.

Thank you for making a difference!

Playing through his pain...

He Stays in the Game By Patricia Pixler

F

all 2016. It is a time Harrison Hull will never forget. It was his first semester at Northwestern as a junior. Growing up in Bremond, Texas, Harrison attended Bremond High School where he played baseball and was named District MVP in back-to-back seasons. He was recruited to play baseball at Northern Oklahoma College (NOC) in Enid, Okla. His sophomore year he was named 1st team all-conference catcher. His talent caught the attention of coaches at Northwestern. They recruited him to play for the Rangers baseball team after he graduated

from NOC with his Associate of Science in Mathematics. “I was given a really good scholarship to play, and I liked the facilities Northwestern had.” It was a good offer for Harrison, so he transferred to Northwestern to continue both his baseball career and his way to a bachelor’s degree. Life was going great. That October everything changed. The Rangers were playing their intersquad Fall World Series. Instead of playing catcher as usual, Harrison was in the right field. A ball went into the field and Harrison saw his chance. He ran for it. He dove. He caught the ball. He also made direct impact on his neck against the right field wall. Harrison stayed against the wall, not wanting to move. The sensation of pins and needles hit his right hand, then it went numb. His neck felt like it was on

NORTHWESTERN FOUNDATION & ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 7

fire and it continued to get worse. The burning went into his right shoulder, then continued down to his right arm. He was rushed by medevac out of the field to see a neurosurgeon for immediate surgery. Doctors discovered he had broken the c6-c7 spinal segment in his neck. During surgery, he had a severe reaction to morphine. His planned five-hour surgery ended up lasting seven and a half hours as the doctors struggled to wake him. When he did wake up, the doctors did not allow him to have pain medication for hours for fear of another reaction. “I don’t like needles, surgery, any of it. Just imagine laying on a bed and somebody telling you that you broke your neck. And the pain was unbearable.” Recovery was long. Doctors expected Harrison to lose between ten to twenty percent of the range of motion in his neck and some circulation in the right side of the body due to the nerve damage. “They obviously told me that I wouldn’t be the same in everyday life or athletically. But they were optimistic and supporting.” During recovery, Harrison was not sure if he would ever be able to play baseball again. “It was just upsetting. One of the things I remember was not being able to curl a five-pound dumbbell three times. Then my arm just gave out and I couldn’t do it at all. “I didn’t know what to expect. You never think something like this would happen to you. Everything was shocking.” Harrison needed two additional surgeries which fused his neck together with titanium plates and screws. He had seven months of rehabilitation. Even then, he is sure the nerves in his neck did not fully heal until a year and a half after his surgery. “They said my injury was unusual in sports. It was more like something they would see in a car accident.” Harrison did lose some range of motion, but he is unsure of how much. He only knows he is not able

to turn his neck left and right as much as he once did, and he cannot look up as high as before. But he still looks forward to his last semester playing as a Ranger. Harrison spent most of the 2017 calendar year red-shirting for the Rangers team as he recovered from the accident. When he returned to play, he earned the spot on opening day as starting catcher. “It was exciting and emotional for me. But overall, I wasn’t able to have as good of a year that I had been accustomed to.” Despite that, Harrison appeared in 35 games for the Rangers during the season. He hit .202 in 94 times at bat and produced seven multi-hit games. His first NCAA home run happened on February 8, 2018. It had been a year and a half since metal plates first fused his neck. “I’ve been working out and training all summer of 2018 trying to get back to what I used to be. I think I have gotten back to that, so I’m looking forward to redeeming myself and showing I can still be the player Northwestern recruited.” Fall 2018 will be Harrison’s last season with the Rangers, as he will graduate in December 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. “Spring 2018 was my hardest semester yet. I had two upper level physics classes and math classes and I was able to earn a 4.0 GPA for the semester.” In addition to being named to the President’s Honor Roll, Harrison also earned “Defensive Player of the Week” a few times throughout his 2017-2018 season. After graduation, Harrison plans be an actuary, though he may gain additional education in graduate school first. Harrison said baseball will always have a place in his life and he would eventually like to coach college baseball. “I still love the game and still want to play the game as long as I can.”

Using her Past... Securing her Future

A

By Patricia Pixler

s a young girl growing up in Alva, Okla., Julia Buckingham always dreamed of going to college, earning a degree, and making something of herself. Julia’s parents divorced when she was two, and her mom walked out of her life. Her father, as a single parent, raised Julia and her younger sister. Under these circumstances, Julia was forced to grow up sooner to help care for her sister as well. But college was still a priority for Julia. She knew her father would not be able to pay for college, so she made paying for college her priority. She worked hard to earn scholarships. In high school, she graduated top of her class as valedictorian. She was a part of almost every organization offered at Alva High School. She participated in student council and was a class treasurer. She was a member of the Key Club, the Oklahoma Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She joined the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and Students Working Against Tobacco. Julia was a star athlete, playing soccer all four years of high school. She also was a trainer for the football team and the girls’ basketball team. She participated in as many community service events as she could. She earned the American Legion Award and an Alva High School Achievement Award. Her dedication paid off when she came to Northwestern. In her freshman year she received a Freshman Academic Scholarship, the Ranger Preview Scholarship, the Valedictorian Scholarship and the Alva High School Graduate Scholarship. “Choosing to attend Northwestern has been one of my best decisions. The amount of support you receive here is overflowing. Anywhere you go somebody is willing to help. The amount of scholarships

available at Northwestern is astounding and truly shows the love our alumni have for our campus and the students.” Julia’s success did not stop once she was accepted into college. As a freshman, she also was selected to join the highly competitive President’s Leadership Class, which is taught by President Janet Cunningham. As a sophomore, Julia became a member of The Red and Black Scroll Society. Julia has been on the President’s Honor Roll all semesters she has attended Northwestern, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Now as a junior, Julia has gained admission to the Nursing Program. Part of the motivation to be a nurse comes from wanting to be part of the medical field, but also still having time for family. “Family wasn’t a big deal to me growing up, so I want to emphasize ‘family’ for my own kids. I believe nursing will give me the best of both worlds. “I know my past does not determine my future. The situation I was put into as a child has shaped me into who I am today. Helping raise my little sister has formed the caring and compassionate side of me, and I know I will use that in nursing.” Julia plans to continue her education after her graduation from Northwestern, but is undecided on what path to follow. Still, she knows Northwestern has made a lasting impact. “I am so thankful for the opportunities I have been given through Northwestern and know that wherever life takes me, this place will always have a piece of my heart. “Without the generosity of our donors, I know college would have been a much harder goal for me to achieve.”

Shaped by her experience...

She Changes Lives By Patricia Pixler

s a child, Kylene Whiteman hoped and wished someone would listen. She wanted someone who would help, someone who would care. She wanted someone who could do something – anything – but that rarely happened for her. Raised in Mooreland, Okla., Kylene was born a crack-baby, a child of substance abusers. She spent days in the hospital unnamed as her dad spent that time on a cocaine binge. She, and her older sisters, spent their childhood being abused. If not being abused, she was watching abuse take place between her parents. Even as a toddler, she was woken in the morning and forced to clean the house. If she didn’t,

Kylene Whiteman with her son, Trace.

“Now that I’m a mother, I have more strength than I have ever had in my life. My son, his father, my faith, and my experiences push me to be a better mother, a better therapist, a better partner, and a better person.”

she would be beaten. Anything in the house became a weapon used against her. When she was in the third grade, her father signed away his parental rights and left. A bitter custody battle between her mother, grandmother and an aunt ensued. Kylene and her sisters were told their mother would not be present when the judge asked where they wanted to live. She was. Fear drove the girls to say they wanted to stay with her. It was okay for a short period of time. Then their mother went from slapping to punching them. As Kylene said, “She just really didn’t care.” When Kylene was in seventh grade, her mother left without warning. The sisters moved in with family members. They made it to high school. Each of them worked 40 hours a week during the school year, and 60 hours a week over the summer. Despite everything, Kylene graduated high school with honors. She attended Northwestern, where she received more scholarships than other universities offered. She graduated in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelors in Social Work. She was named the 2012 National Association of Social Workers-Oklahoma Undergraduate Student of the Year. Upon graduation, she was accepted into the advanced-standing Masters of Social Work program at the University of Oklahoma. She graduated in May 2013 with her Masters in Social Work. Kylene is not only a survivor, she has thrived. She is currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and works for the Northwest Center for Behavioral Health in Woodward, Okla. For six years she has provided mental health and substance abuse services to individuals. She works with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly population in outpatient care, as well as residential care for substance abuse disorders. One of Kylene’s goals as she prepared to graduate from Northwestern was that she wanted to work with

substance abusers to teach them to cope and become better parents again. Kylene currently achieves that. In the residential treatment program, she helps individuals focus on their recovery and teaches them appropriate coping skills to maintain sobriety. In addition, she works directly with the state in situations much like her own childhood experience. “I have worked hand-in-hand with Child Welfare by providing mental health, substance abuse, and trauma counseling to parents and children who are involved in the Child Welfare system. I also have been the treatment provider for the Woodward Area Drug Court program.” When Kylene was young, she promised herself she would become the person she needed as a child. The one who would listen, who would care, and who would help. She has become that person. “If I’m able to have the slightest impact on a child’s life, a parent’s life, or any individual’s life, then I’ve done my job effectively.” Adding to her journey, Kylene is now a mother herself. Her son Trace was born in December of 2016. “Now that I’m a mother, I have more strength than I have ever had in my life. My son, his father, my faith, and my experiences push me to be a better mother, a better therapist, a better partner, and a better person. “It is because of my past experiences, both good and bad, that I have been shaped into a compassionate, empathetic, dedicated, motivated and caring individual who strives to assist others in bettering their lives. “I am honored to be an alumni of such a great university, as Northwestern continues to offer an affordable place to receive a higher education for all types of individuals. I never once felt judged by my past or my parents’ past.”
