Another invaluable option is to be a mentor to a Northwestern student. The Ranger2Ranger mentoring program provides opportunities to engage with students during their academic journey. Mentors are advocates for Northwestern students, guiding them through a successful networking experience. Students will gain insight through your knowledge and wisdom. Both the student and the mentor share the reward. More about this program can be found at https:// ournorthwestern.org/get-involved/ranger2ranger. We look forward to continuing support and engagement from our Ranger family. Dear Friends, It has been a remarkably positive year at Northwestern. As Dr. Janet Cunningham stepped out of the pivotal role of University President after 16 years, many of us were unsure how someone could successfully follow her. After a year in the office, Dr. Bo Hannaford has proven himself worthy of the challenge. Dr. Hannaford’s love of this University, along with his excellent leadership qualities, have made this one of the easiest transitions I have ever been a part of. As a higher education institution, this University is fortunate to have two exceptional leaders back to back. I have not witnessed this to be the norm in other institutions. Since they are both graduates, I believe it is also evidence of the type of graduate and leader we produce here at Northwestern. Another inexplicable change occurred last year that I hope continues this semester. This past year, our students started and finished as the nicest, most connected, grateful group of young people I have witnessed in my 18 years of being back on campus. I don’t know if it is a post-COVID occurrence, the type of student who is now choosing to attend college here, or a pushback to the lack of kindness and decency we read and hear about across our country. Regardless, our students are making a visible and remarkable effort to be kind and connected to everyone around them. These are not just students from our local area. I have experienced

04

Annual Report 2023

refreshing friendliness from students who are from all over the world. Our faculty, staff and community members have noticed the same thing. I feel the college experience should not just be about learning. It can and should also be about making the best friends of your life and having a positive life-changing experience. That was what made Northwestern so special for me. Finally, I would like to point out that the Foundation had a significant change in personnel last summer and fall. Although the transition has been challenging, I am excited about the ones who stayed with us and the new crew members we have in place. Everyone is on board, not just to have a job, but because they want to make a difference every day. It is fun, rewarding, and exciting to come to work with colleagues who feel like family. I am optimistic about the potential accomplishments for the University and the Foundation & Alumni Association this next year. If you are not reading our monthly eNewsletter, you will probably miss some of the exciting achievements on campus. I encourage you to go to our website and sign up at ournorthwestern.org. "...I am incredibly proud of the work I've put into my education."

Annual Report 2023

ABIGAIL GREGORY by Caitlin Hofen

Abigail Gregory, ’24, enrolled initially at Northwestern as a nursing major, but the birth of her first child caused her to rethink her career path. She then changed to early childhood education.

Gregory has set high goals as she has progressed through her academic journey.

“With the recent birth of my second child, I had to do an appeal to start the master’s program in school counseling,” Gregory said. “I also had to push back my student teaching an extra semester.

“No one expected me to get a bachelor’s degree, let alone a master’s. I am incredibly proud of the work I’ve put into my education. I want to be a good role model and positively impact as many children as possible, including my own.

“I always wanted to do something where I could help people; that’s why I started in nursing. Through education, I’ll be helping differently. I’ll shape children’s minds and be a positive role model. That’s important because not everyone comes from a positive home life. Teachers wear many different hats, though it’s not what they’re paid to do.”

“I want to make sure my kids have a much better life than I ever did, and they never have the struggles I did. Unfortunately, I can’t protect them from all the evil in the world, but I can ensure they aren’t worried about things like finances at a young age like I was. My husband and I want to provide them with a better life than I had.

Gregory primarily attends classes on the Woodward campus, where she serves as the Woodward Leadership Advisory Board president. She is also an active member of the Oklahoma Aspiring Educators Association (OAEA) and Conserving Our Ranger Environment (CORE).

“I believe you don’t have to be smart to go to college; you just have to work hard. Many people believe you need to have prior knowledge, but you have to want to do it. You’re not supposed to know it all beforehand. Learning is part of the journey.”

Gregory said she chose to attend Northwestern because of its small class sizes. “When you walk in the classroom, you’re called by name, not just a number. I know all my classmates and professors personally and will stay in contact with them after graduation. Seeing how the professors care about each student has been positive and encouraging.” Creating a Better Life Gregory’s father passed away when she was a freshman in high school, causing her to move in with a friend’s family and take on tasks most teenagers don’t have to face. “It made me grow up faster than most people,” Gregory said. “I started working when I was 15 years old. Instead of having sleepovers on the weekends, I was going to work at 4 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday. It’s not what the typical high schooler has to do, but it taught me to be a motivated, hard worker.”

“I saw things a 12-year-old should never see.” Chris Perez, ’26, recalled the risks of the 2,000-mile journey he and his family faced to get to the United States from Guatemala. Enduring a two-month-long trek that included walking across the scrub-lands and desert in Mexico, Perez, at 12 years old in 2014, witnessed migrants being shot or already dead. Yet, his mother was determined to deliver her family of two sons and a daughter to the United States with the intention of providing them with a better future. With temporary visas, the family was admitted into the United States and made their way to Laverne, Okla. Perez met challenges given his total lack of fluency with the English language, but he persevered and 08

Annual Report 2023

began to learn the language through listening and observing others. He also found a voice through instrumental music. “I began to work with percussion and the French horn, teaching myself how to read music. I played sports while in high school, but music became my passion.” Perez’ ability with music caught the attention of Dr. Marc Decker, at the time the assistant professor of music and director of bands at Northwestern. “Dr. Decker told me that I could grow at Northwestern, and I considered it. By the time I finished high school, I felt like I was done with academics.”

CHRIS PEREZ by John Allen

Perez decided to go into farming full-time. “Two months of building fence told me I needed to think about a different career,” Perez said with a smile. The Power of Students Recruiting Students Perez credits the influence from two of his fellow-Laverne high school friends who had found their places at Northwestern. “Chris was one of the hardest workers on the Laverne High School football team,” said Justin Massee, a Health and Sports Science Management major set to graduate in December 2023. “No matter how tired he was or how hard he got hit, he would get up and keep going. I knew he had the work ethic to be successful. I also knew he would appreciate the environment at Northwestern; teachers and staff know the students and they want us to succeed.” Erika Hernandez, who will also graduate in December 2023 with an elementary education degree, also saw the potential in Perez. “When Chris was a senior at Laverne High School, I talked to him about his plans after graduation. He told me he was looking at some universities, but he wasn’t sure about attending because they were expensive. I could relate to his situation.

here on campus and in the community. The positive influence began with my mother, who instilled in me the value of working hard. This sticks with me today.” Perez has immersed himself in the culture and is engaged on campus and off campus. He serves as a resident assistant, president of Phi Delta, section leader for the Ranger Band, volunteer at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, and is a peer leader for Freshmen Connection. Off campus he is a member of the praise band at Alva Nazarene Church and plays at the Wesley House. He also works part-time at The Menagerie petting zoo when his schedule allows. The instrumental music education major keeps his eyes on the future while embracing the lessons learned on his journey. “The trek across two countries to get to American made me who I am today. Nothing comes easy, but I have much to gain by working hard. “I want to give back to others in the same ways so much has been given to me. When I eventually teach, I hope to encourage students the way I was encouraged. I know the time will come when I can give back to Northwestern. I look forward to that."

“I did band with Chris in high school, and I knew he had all the tools and work ethic to be successful in college. I shared my Northwestern journey with him in the hope I could encourage him in any way possible. I have had so much fun watching Chris grow here at Northwestern.” The Power of the Donor Perez immediately felt at home at Northwestern and in Alva. As he finished his first semester, however, the reality of not having the funds to continue his college journey became an overwhelming concern. Scholarship funds provided Perez with the support needed to continue at Northwestern. “I am grateful for the support from our donors, as well as the support of so many individuals

PAIGE ROBINETTE by Caitlin Hofen

“The small-town atmosphere of Alva and Northwestern’s science department offering more one-on-one opportunities really helped me decide where I wanted to go to college,” said Page Robinette, a native of Waukomis, Okla. Robinette, a chemistry major who graduated in May 2023, said she knew Northwestern was right for her when she attended Camp Ranger, the freshmen introductory camp that allows students to become acquainted with Northwestern and Alva before their first semester. “I met some of my best friends to this day at Camp Ranger,” Robinette said. “Even though many of them have left or transferred, I still talk to them every day.” Robinette was active on campus in a variety of clubs and organizations, including Northwestern Scholar Ambassadors and Leadership Northwestern. She served as treasurer of the Chemistry Club, secretary of the Medical Sciences Club and co-captain of the Northwestern Cheer Team.

Robinette’s father, Justin, graduated from Northwestern in 1997. As a second-generation Ranger, Robinette said some of her favorite times as a student involved cheer. “My favorite memories are cheering at games against SWOSU,” Robinette said. “The atmosphere always gets your blood pumping. I love seeing the support we have.”

I want to do something that matters.

“Even though I held offices within the clubs I was a part of, public speaking is not my strong suit,” Robinette said. “That has been a big obstacle I’ve had to overcome. I had to learn how to relax when I’m in front of a large group of people” As a chemistry major, Robinette plans to continue her education and obtain a Doctorate in Pharmaceuticals. Her ultimate goal is to open her own research facility to study chemotherapy drugs. She chose her area of study to honor her grandfather who was diagnosed with Chordoma cancer, a rare malignant tumor along the spine. “I want to work in a hospital setting and gain hands-on experience developing chemotherapy drugs,” Robinette said. “I want to do something that matters. Everybody at Northwestern has a purpose, usually involved with students and teaching. While I don’t necessarily plan to go into teaching, people always need help. I want to be the one to help them.”

DONOVAN REICHENBERGER FUNDRAISING AWARD Jen Oswald, Ph.D.

Chair, Division of Education and Associate Professor of Education Northwestern Oklahoma State University The Donovan Reichenberger Fundraising Award was established in 2010 by the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association with the goal to recognize the private fundraising efforts of Northwestern Oklahoma State University faculty and staff. Named for Donovan Reichenberger and his example of generous fundraising service, the award honors an individual who seeks to further the mission and vision of the university, allowing continued prosperity during a critical time of diminishing state support. Dr. Jen Oswald was awarded the Reichenberger Fundraising Award in 2023. Over the years, Dr. Oswald has carried on Northwestern’s legacy of mentoring and preparing students who will one day step into their own classrooms. She is recognized as a leader at Northwestern, a leader in her community, and a leader in her field of education. Dr. Oswald was instrumental in securing the Kirk and Drue Washburn Excellence in the Classroom Scholarship, which provides support for paraprofessionals in earning their education degrees. This program serves to place qualified teachers in the classroom in the future and at a time when schools are challenged with teacher shortages.

"Scholarships directly impact our students, and as we continue to increase our pipeline for teachers, this will be an excellent resource for many who wish to pursue this wonderful profession. We are honored to recognize Kirk and Drue Washburn for their commitment in producing the very best teachers through our programs.” - Dr. Bo Hannaford, President, Northwestern Oklahoma State University 14
