OUR VALUES OUR VALUES
Place the success of the students and the university foremost in our plans.
Strengthen the legacy of professionalism, loyalty, sincerity, integrity and reliability with everyone we encounter.
Foster and maintain positive relationships and communication with our alumni and community to promote a positive giving climate.
Build on our strong sense of tradition, family and community and ensure our donors understand how everyone plays a part in the success of a Northwestern student.
LETTERFROMTHECHAIR: LETTERFROMTHECHAIR:
In this first year of serving as the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association, I have been reminded of the lifelong passion that our alumni and our Northwestern community have for Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
I have seen how the different academic offerings and departments on our campuses are structured to address some of the issues we face today, including the Doctor of Nursing Practice program that is meeting the needs of rural health care. Another example is the Literacy Center in the School of Education, where our education students help improve the literacy rates – and the confidence – of our elementary school students.
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University experience continues to be robust, rewarding and significant. Our Northwestern students gain immeasurable advantages through one of the most critical infrastructures in the free world – that of education. Every classroom, lab or campus event can provide our students with the opportunity for discovery, knowledge and personal insight that will prepare them for not only their future, but ours as well.
The return on investment for Fiscal Year 2021 is the highest in the history of the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association. A strong end-of-the-year market rate definitely boosted our financial results. This market rate, married with the investment made by you and others who believe in the value of education at Northwestern, brought a bright ending to a year of uncertainty and doubt.
I have learned over the years to not be surprised by the determined commitment of the family called Rangers. I have seen it before…the power of our Northwestern community is undeniable. When things around us seem dismal and tough, the Ranger family rolls up its collective sleeves and puts the Ranger resolve into creating solutions.
Northwestern, as an intellectual center, offers academics, sports and the arts. It offers connections that provide opportunities to both its students and its community. With the act of philanthropy – the willingness to invest in others – we help set the course for the next generation. We have done well before, and must continue on this path.
Thank you for your investment. Every gift propels our students and our university forward.
Ride, Rangers, Ride!

LETTERFROMTHECEO: LETTERFROMTHECEO:
This past year has been one of the most tumultuous that I can remember I feel extremely grateful to have lived this last year in Northwest Oklahoma I believe we have been spared many of the challenges that other parts of the world have endured In spite of our relative well being, I have lost several friends from COVID 19 One in particular had been passionately engaged in the life of our University. That person was Donovan Reichenberger.
I first met Donovan in the '80s while I was attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University Since I was a history major and he was a history faculty member, our paths crossed repeatedly I was in a couple of his history classes But, I never really knew him until I came back and accepted my current position in the summer of 2005 Donovan was a trustee on the Executive Committee that offered me the opportunity to assume my current professional duties.
By the time I returned, Donovan had retired from the University after more than 25 years teaching He had served almost 20 years on the Foundation Board, with most of that as chairman of the Investment Committee As I began my second career, I leaned on Donovan’s experience for both professional and personal counsel
I believe we understood each other because of our similar experiences. Donovan had spent 18 years in the Navy before an accident to his hand had terminated his military career I had just completed 20 years of service in the Army and was attempting to acclimate to a completely different work culture His willingness to mentor and his frank conversations were invaluable to me as I started a new profession. We also enjoyed a friendly banter having served in two rival branches of service
When Donovan lost his wife six months after I started, I tried to include him in more things both on and off duty Since he and Dorothy never had any children, I tried to look out for him and provide support as he worked through the transition of living alone after decades of marriage
It was after Dorothy’s passing that I was allowed to see and appreciate the inner Donovan Reichenberger often hidden by a gruff exterior He was funny, generous, brilliant, sensitive and ultra organized
He loved trees, students, the Catholic Church and, of course, Dorothy with all his heart. He did his best to remain impeccably dressed and taught me a great deal about the subject We had many discussions about suits, shirts and shoes. He was a constant teacher and a continuous learner
I have many fun memories and stories of Donovan He became very important to my family My wife and three daughters were pretty regular about sending fresh jelly, blackberry pie and other goodies to Donovan They always made sure he was on the “Singing Valentine” fundraising route when the girls were in the high school choir
Donovan used to call my youngest daughter, Liberty, his “girlfriend" She was five years old when my friendship with Donovan began As a teenager, she cleaned his house to help keep gas in her vehicle. Liberty is now a junior at Northwestern and has been a big help to me over the last few years as I worked to keep Donovan in a good place and to fulfill my pledges to him.
It was through Donovan that I forged a friendship with Kimberly Weast, the chair of Northwestern’s Fine Arts Department As she sought to steward the generous gifts Donovan made to her department, we unintentionally became non biological children to Donovan Together we consulted on health and safety issues for Donovan, much like any other brother and sister would for an aging parent We never overcame his German resolve to refuse hearing aids; but, we did succeed on several other important issues In retrospect, it was a pleasant opportunity to work in partnership
Donovan has left an incredible example and an enduring legacy for many of us For those of you who never knew him, you missed a wonderful human being For those of you who did know him, I expect you feel like I do I was blessed with the opportunity to know him and to call him my friend

Northwestern Oklahoma State University has experienced an interesting COVID 19 year in 2020 2021 We are certainly glad to now be enjoying in person activities Students are able to enjoy campus life once again and have many opportunities to get involved and meet their peers with no face coverings required
At Northwestern, we are supporting the next generation of our state’s leaders and thinkers We are creating doctors, political scientists, small business owners, and so much more The experiences students have while on our campuses are so critical to a quality educational experience, which is why we are so glad to have a normal year.
We are pleased to report that the state legislature increased our allocations this year and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education also allocated funds to several areas of emphasis including nursing, teacher education and STEM fields. Federal CARES funds were distributed to students, which will help with their educational expenses, while the university has several ongoing projects to increase technology opportunities throughout our three campuses
While we have many goals at Northwestern, we continue to seek more students to walk through our doors We are experiencing a decrease in enrollment as are many higher education institutions across the state and nation; and we are working hard to improve those numbers Our enrollment task force is continually working to implement new strategies to increase our student population
As the supporters of our University, your generosity has made a difference in the lives of countless students. The education of our students is impacted greatly because of these resources you give to increase scholarships, support faculty and renovate facilities. We see the success students encounter while in the classroom, on the stage, court, or field. We get to see that success because of you, and we thank you for those special moments.

From treasurer of Student Government Association to Ranger Connection peer leader, this senior education major is known for her kindness and helpful spirit
A native of Laverne, Okla , Hernandez had no plans to attend college, let alone Northwestern
“My family didn’t save for me to go to college, so I thought it wouldn’t be a possibility,”
Hernandez said “By the end of my senior year, I was enrolled in a vo tech program after high school
“
One of my friends was so excited to come to Northwestern I asked my mom if it was possible for me to attend Because I had attended Ranger Preview, I was already enrolled and accepted. We worked out a payment plan which was possible because Northwestern is so affordable "
Hernandez initially chose business as her major, but soon found her calling elsewhere.
“Since I decided so late to come to Northwestern, I didn’t have an educational plan in mind, ” Hernandez said. “I chose the business route because I figured I would have more job opportunities
“
Once I got to Alva, I started volunteering at the First Baptist Church in the children’s department every Wednesday I realized that was my passion I wanted to have a career helping and teaching children. I made the decision late in my junior year to switch to elementary education
Hernandez is the youngest of four siblings, with a big age gap separating her from the rest.
“My three older siblings never graduated from high school, so I want to be an inspiration to my nieces and nephews that they can go to college too," Hernandez said.
Coming from a Hispanic family, Hernandez wants to use her bilingualism to help children in her future teaching career.
“My sister speaks Spanish, so that was my nieces and nephew’s first language, ” Hernandez said. “When they started school, they struggled being taught in English. I want to help students who also struggle with that by using the skills I have That’s why I think education is a great field for me to go into ”
Hernandez holds the title of peer leader for Ranger Connection classes, a class designed for freshmen to learn more about Northwestern and Alva She said she finds this title an honor
“Through my position as peer leader, I’ve met some of my best friends at college, some of whom are on the football team Because of this connection, I get to be a team equipment manager. All of these leadership opportunities were possible by taking the small step of applying to be a peer leader ”
With a passion for serving others, Hernandez shows her heart through her time and effort. Being so involved with campus life can be time consuming, but Hernandez wouldn’t have it any other way.
Becoming a difference maker
With a spirit of service at their center, nursing and healthcare have become essential to the livelihood of society.
Northwestern Oklahoma State University graduates a well prepared class of nursing students every year In May 2023, Brenner Clark plans to be one of these graduates and start his career of caring for others
An Amorita, Okla native, Clark was accepted into the nursing program at Northwestern earlier this year.
“
I realized when I was young that I had a passion for caring for other people, ” Clark said “I’ve overcome a lot of health problems in my life, and that is part of why I chose nursing I was inspired by the people to helped me to get better I couldn’t think of a better thing to do "
Clark said he chose to attend Northwestern because of its close proximity to home and its affordability.
“I received many scholarship opportunities by choosing to come to Northwestern,” Clark said. “We have a great nursing program here, and it felt right to continue my education close to home ”
Clark is a member of the Student Nurses Association (SNA), a student led organization that focuses on community service, nursing health and education
“SNA tries to prepare us as students for when we graduate with our bachelor of science degree in nursing, and eventually get our registered nurse licensure, ” Clark said. “If we need to have a fundraiser, we can go through SNA to sponsor it We can use it to pay for any equipment we need ” Clark has built many relationships during his time at Northwestern These are relationships he hopes to draw on in the future
“The people I’ve met at Northwestern have impacted me greatly,” Clark said “I’ve become friends with people I never thought I’d get to know. I have built some professional relationships, as well. I know I can count on many of them to be there if I need help Once I’m in my career, I can call on them for advice or letters of reference. ”
Once he graduates with his bachelor of science degree in nursing, Clark hopes to become an emergency room nurse in the Enid, Okla., area. He then plans to work his way up to the intensive care unit before continuing his education to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)
“A CRNA essentially does the same job as an anesthesiologist,” Clark said “I’ve always found that area of the field interesting. I’ve shadowed some CRNAs before and it seems like something I would want to do Being an ER nurse and an ICU nurse are requirements before I can get into school to become a CRNA ”
Working in such high stress environment doesn’t deter Clark from his career path
“I feel I will be more than prepared for any situation because of the nursing program at Northwestern,” Clark said.
The words and actions of several individuals in his young life came into play while Chris Kincaid looked ahead to the physical therapy he would endure to overcome a sports related hip surgery in 2019 The courage and determination of his mother, the sacrifice and non stop support of grandparents, and the mentoring that came from several father figures brought a clear focus to Chris’ understanding of what was in front of him and what he had to do
“This wasn’t a situation of ‘I can do this’ This was ‘I will do this’ There was no other option ”
Recalling the agonizing moment he realized he could lose his ability to run competitively, Kincaid’s immediate course of action was to “toughen up” and resolve to do everything in his power to fully heal
Sports had been a passion for Kincaid from an early age His mother, Kristi Kincaid (a 1991 Northwestern graduate), added coaching to her teaching career The two would spend several Saturday afternoons watching basketball games on television At one point in his life in Arizona, Kincaid crossed paths with Northwestern alumnus Roy Platt, ’93, who was on the Ranger football and track teams.
“Roy provided a lot of encouragement as he pushed me to improve my skills What I remember most, though, was his advice to 'toughen up' and play like a champion With Roy, there was no other option ”
Kincaid admits he experienced times of self doubt during his eight month recovery period, but his Northwestern teammates rallied and provided consistent encouragement that he would return In August of 2020, he did return to compete with Northwestern’s cross country team.
“Chris is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever coached,” said Jill Lancaster, head cross country/track and field coach. “A lesser person would have walked away after this kind of injury Chris knows his talents and he knows his strengths If there is a way, Chris will make it happen.”
Kincaid grew up in a single parent home on a Navajo reservation in Arizona where his mother taught school Eventually they moved to Mooreland, Okla , where his mother’s parents had raised their family.
Kincaid blended his passions for helping others and athletics, setting his goal to become an athletic trainer. He graduated in December 2020 with a major in health and sports science and a minor in biology He is taking prerequisite classes at Northwestern in preparation for obtaining a Master’s degree in athletic training. In taking the prerequisites, he will earn his second minor in sports psychology from Northwestern
Kincaid recognizes the advantages of his Northwestern experience
“Coach Lancaster has made a tremendous impact on my life at Northwestern. She cares. She encourages. I feel she gives her best And she expects her athletes to give their best ”
The drive to do his best also showed itself in his collegiate academic career Kincaid particularly recalls the discipline required in his zoology class
“The discipline it took to absorb all of the information in Dr Place’s class was critical for success ”
According to Kincaid, Northwestern provided him with the resources to study without the worry of debt. Academic and athletic scholarships, combined with Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship, allowed Kincaid to graduate from Northwestern debt-free
“I have been fortunate to have so many encouraging people in my life Northwestern has provided many of these individuals At the same time, I know I have to rely on myself to be successful. I feel like I’m ready for the next adventure ”
By John Allen Coming to Northwestern Coming to Northwestern“This wasn’t a situation of ‘I can do this’. This was ‘I will do this’. wasn’t a situation of ‘I can do This was ‘I will do There was no other option.” no other option.”

Virtual learning has become a key aspect of education since the beginning of 2020 Schools across the world went to teaching curriculum online to protect students from COVID 19. When school started back in the fall of 2020, many educational services continued virtual instruction One such service was the Literacy Center at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
"The tutor works with the student consistently one-on-one, once a week."
"The Literacy Center is a place where pre K-12th grade students can come and hone their literacy skills with one tutor,” said Dr. Jennifer Oswald, Literacy Center director. “The tutor works with the student consistently one-on-one, once a week, in a way that helps them as an individual and meets their needs, while making it fun. It also serves our teacher candidates by preparing them for virtual instruction and how to instruct a child who may have trouble with reading.”
Oswald had to figure out a way for tutoring sessions to continue in spite of instruction having to go online “In Spring of 2020, I had broken-hearted tutors and students who never got to finish their tutoring sessions,” Oswald said. “For fall of 2020, I had to rethink how to provide tutoring services to ensure everyone got to finish no matter what. So we went virtual for the 2020-2021 academic year.
By Caitlin Hofen“I honestly never anticipated the success we would see with a virtual program. I also didn’t expect to enjoy leading a virtual tutoring program as much as I have. My tutors have gone from hesitant and nervous about teaching virtually to pros who are sad when the last day of tutoring comes. It definitely is possible to not only provide literacy tutoring virtually, but to build positive relationships with the students we serve.”
Mikayla Edris, an early childhood education major, was paired with Ethan Podrizak, a third grader in Iowa She said her ability to virtually tutor advanced her skillset in more ways than she imagined.
“Online tutoring was one of the most beneficial opportunities I've had thus far in the education program,” Edris said. “I gained so many skills from this opportunity. Not only did I learn how to better use my computer and all the online resources that come with it, but I also grew as a future educator. I really had to take a step back to evaluate how I would interact with and teach my student because it was completely different than doing it face-to-face.
“Ethan was always ready to learn something new and had the best attitude I will always remember our last session together. In the sincerest tone Ethan said: ‘thank you so much for tutoring me.’ His mom wasn't around so I knew it really came from his heart. As a future educator, I have learned to really find value in all the small moments and that is one I will never forget.”
Tabatha Podrizak, Ethan’s mom, said, “Ethan’s semester with his NWOSU tutor, Mikayla, proved he had the skill and determination to advance in reading. Mikayla focused on Ethan’s strengths in order to build his confidence and challenge him in areas he needed work. In turn, Ethan’s reading scores improved in fluidity with near zero errors from the beginning of the year. We decided to enroll him in another semester with Dr. Oswald’s students in hopes it will provide the additional resources he needs to excel into grade level reading.”

The Literacy Center The Literacy Center
Oswald said she never predicted having to move the program to virtual, but it has only expanded the program for both teacher candidates and students. “In 2019-20, we were in-person and served 10 students and had a waiting list of two. All of our students came to us from Alva with the exception of one who came from Burlington,” Oswald said. “In 2020-21 we were virtual and served 24 students and had a waiting list of 20. We served 12 rural districts in Oklahoma in addition to one student in rural Iowa and one in rural California. " “One unforeseen benefit of the virtual component was that it allowed Northwestern students in Enid to participate as tutors in the Literacy Center, which is based in Alva This allowed me to be more successful in recruiting tutors, which also boosted our numbers.”
With the success of virtual and in-person instruction, Oswald said she plans to expand the program even further with an increased number of participants and updated technology.
“The hard part is always finding enough tutors for our waiting list,” Oswald said “There’s also the problem of our tutors not having the technology needed for virtual instruction. Laptops and computers with microphones and cameras are limited, so being able to expand our technology will help our tutors "
According to Oswald, what started as a way to help the children and parents in the Alva community, would not have been possible without the help of donors and volunteers.
“I saw a need in the community,” Oswald said. “Kids were struggling with reading and parents would call and ask about a reading tutor. I thought that starting this program would be the best way to meet that need. In some form, the children read in every session. Whether it’s sight words or a comprehension game, it’s based off the child and their area that needs improvement."
“We started the program with nothing but a handful of supplies and tutors who were willing to jump in and figure it out. We’ve grown to having the materials and supplies that we need to offer our best. This program never would have grown without the help of volunteers and donors who stepped in.”
