I

t’s been commented on, especially on social media sites, that after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo, on the kosher supermarket and more recently on the baths, restaurants and Bataclan Theatre in Paris, there was an outpouring of grief and solidarity with Parisians.

But given the ongoing series of stabbings in Israel where are the world leaders, arm in arm, marching through Jerusalem. World landmarks have not been bathed in blue and white light to symbolize the Israeli flag. Is this lack of outpouring latent anti-Semitism?

In my view it is more to do with a lack of empathy, due to detachment driven by distance, Most of us know Paris, we can imagine the bars, the restaurants and we can picture ourselves in the theatre. Israeli seems a long way away, a land most Britons know little of. Perhaps the best comparator to highlight that the lack of empathy is not sinister, is our reaction during the IRA bombings. Day in day out soldiers and northern Irish citizens were being shot and bombed, with only a resigned and low level grumbling from mainland Brits. However when the Brighton bomb went off, when the Sussex Arms pub in Covent Garden was bombed, then we noticed. There was an outpouring of sympathy and anger, calls from the press and public for the Government to

‘take the gloves off ’ and deal with the IRA terrorists. So unless it’s on our doorstep, unless we feel ‘we are next’ or can envisage ourselves in the same situation, our interest is passing and passionless. The mythical ‘Dundee Man Drowns’ headline after the sinking of the Titanic is a good example of this.

The myth is a local newspaper reported the sinking of the Titanic, not by the 1683 lives lost, but by the fact a local man was on board. A local man drowning hooks the interest rather than unknown people dying in a faraway place, that people had little knowledge of and so could not really imagine.

Paris is on our doorstep, it’s a major European capital and we can picture ourselves in the same situation. The Middle East is distant, a land few have visited and where many have a vague biblical image.

Of course this is compounded because compassion fatigue has set in, and perhaps this is not a reflection of hostility to Israel but a reflection of two phenomena.

We have become inured to images of death and destruction.

The 24 hour news provides a steady flow of pictures and reports of atrocities across the globe. The shock value diminishes as we become desensitised as the next outrage rolls across our TV or computer screens. We have been conditioned to need constant stimulation; a constant need to be in touch – texting, tweeting and status updates on Facebook etc.

Sharing our daily trivia – all contributes to a diminution of our attention span.

Then the frequency of attacks can make any incidents ‘same old/same old’ as the saying goes, they become part of daily life and become seen as ‘the norm’. So when Dafna Meir was stabbed (one of the most recent stabbings in Israel), it barely caused a ripple in the UK media. So the apparent indifference to the daily atrocities in Israel is not anti-Semitism but a symptom of our own willingness to become numbed to what is going on around us and Call 0161 877 9500 our own, selfish need, to be For Practical
