The proposed demonstration by a far right group is throwing up challenging questions. Why isn’t the demonstration simply banned? Should people with a history of anti-Semitism be allowed to preach their views in an area known for having a large Jewish community?

Should observant Jews join the counter demonstration or will they be breaking Shabbos?

Should we be giving the far right the publicity they crave?

Are we over-reacting by having a mass counter-demo when the far right are likely to muster just a couple of dozen of supporters?

Another challenging question is whether my enemy’s enemy is my friend? Should we walk alongside people and groups we’d otherwise avoid? If some of the groups supporting the local Jewish Community who are joining the counter demonstration are reputed to have some strong anti-Israel views, (including supporting the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions movement) should we accept them or be wary of them? If the BDS movement is a covert form of anti-Semitism, do we accept their support? Do we unite around a common foe only to find our new friends arguing against in the future?

Isn’t the simplest solution to ban the demo by the far right?

The problem is that the

webpage advertising the anti-Jewish demo is - in my view - inciting racial hatred, but until the demonstrators turn up and break the law the Police can’t ban a demonstration that may have demonstrators who may break the law. We don’t arrest people for what they might do, but what they do. So I am arguing that the Police use their powers under the Public Order Act to move the far right away from Golders Green, to look at making the far right have their demo on a different day, and ban amplification equipment so anti-Semitic speeches have limited reach. Of course if anyone breaks the law (and we have to be careful that our counter demonstrators are not goaded into reacting and breaking the law themselves) they should be prosecuted.

Even though the Police tend to video people and arrest later (to avoid causing a violent backlash) any subsequent prosecutions must be publicised. Our community needs to see justice done.

So we need to embrace all who turn up to support our local community. We have to ignore our own internal differences for the common goal - to challenge anti-Semitism. Importantly we remain dignified whatever the neo-nazis do to try and provoke

us. We show through our unity that there is more that binds us than divides us.

But why don’t we simply ban these groups? My personal view is that banning these hateful groups simply drives them underground. Before I became a Member of Parliament I thought banning orders for neo-nazi groups, islamists etc. was right. Then I was attacked by an Islamist Group, I now have extra security at home and my office, my diary still goes off to the Police each week, but importantly I know who the group are and what they are up to. Importantly, so do the Police.

Banning groups makes us feel better but may drive them underground and I’d rather they were out in the open where I can see them and challenge them.

So free speech isn’t perfect, people will say hateful things and seek to incite hatred. If they break the law then they should be prosecuted - publicly. Your rights when transferring money to the wrong recipients - Dean DUNHAM John H from Birmingham sent me an email this week about a dispute he has with his bank.

On 3 February he went on to his online banking and keyed in the details of a payment that he wanted to make to a third party.

This involved him typing the sort code and account number of the recipient of the funds and the amount. He confirmed the transaction and the money was sent from his account. However, on 5 February the intended recipient started to chase him for the money as it had not arrived in their account. John then telephoned his bank to see where the money was and after some investigation it transpired that John had typed in one wrong digit in relation to the account number meaning that the money had been sent to the wrong account. As at 10 February John had not received his money back and the bank has told him that he may never get it back. Sound familiar? To many it will, as this seems to be a common problem where the outcome is far from satisfactory on many occasions.

If this happens to you here’s what you need to know:

Time is of the essence The quicker you are at informing your bank about the problem the greater your chances are of getting the money back. With this being the case find out how long the money will take to transfer out

of your account, before you make the transfer, so that you can check that the recipient has received the funds at the applicable time. If you don’t you can contact the bank immediately.

How to complain If you believe that money has been transferred to the wrong recipient you will need to provide her the following information: • Date and time that you made the transfer • How you made the transfer (e.g: telephone or internet banking or within the branch • The exact amount you transferred • Details of where the monies should have been sent • If possible, details of where the money was actually sent (e. the account number)

Once you have collated this information you should send it all to the bank’s customer services department immediately with a covering note explaining the situation. A few days after sending your email or letter, telephone their customer services department and make sure that they have received it and ask them for an acknowledgment.

Don’t take no for an answer If your bank says that they cannot help and therefore that you have lost your money, you can make a formal complaint to their head office. Tell them that

you notified them immediately and that they have a duty to do all they can to get your money back. It is also worth saying that you will take your story to the media if you’re left out of pocket. It is a fact that those that i) know their rights and ii) shout the loudest get the best results when complaining.

Financial Ombudsman If you get nowhere with the bank you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service – www.financial -ombudsman.org.uk. The Financial Ombudsman is a free and easy service to use and can be very effective. If you do not have internet access they can deal with your complaint via the post. If you prefer this method telephone 0300 123 9 123 and ask them to send you a complaint form.

HEALTHMATTERS Understanding Innate Health -By Eli Bloch You may have come across “Innate Health’. Some people think that it is a coping technique, in a way of managing or controlling your thinking. Others think it is a kind of meditation, as a way to relieve stress for those going through particularly challenging phases in their life.

The truth is that it is none of the above!

Innate Health is in fact part of our natural physiological make-up. It is as natural to us as our immune system which fends off the flu. It entails a state of mind that adopts the notion that thoughts/feelings are simply not the be all and end all; they are not reliable, not absolute and not final. Rather they are a transitory gift we have been given to make sense of life. We can quite often lose sight of our innate health, but we can never lose our ability to tap back into it in order to resume a constructive flow of present-moment thoughts.

There is a potential for everyone to understand how to experience and live with challenging situations and occurrences by recognising that there is an underlying and default peace of mind which allows us to naturally detach from any experience until a new one swiftly follows. This in turn reorders our thoughts and

allows us to benefit from the true nature of the mind which is clarity. The feeling of clarity is light and hopeful.

It’s this understanding which enables one to benefit from the wisdom, common sense and creativity that are innate within us. It’s not a technique that needs to be taught – one just needs to be aware and appreciate the workings of the mind to benefit from its infinite resources. We are designed to navigate ourselves gracefully through the ups and downs of life. We don’t need to push thoughts away ,as a practise, rather simply understand that ‘a thought is simply a thought’ and that the nature of them is to keep coming and going, will enable us to reckon with them accordingly. Subsequently, this understanding enables more than just to ‘cope’ with unwarranted thoughts; it establishes a significant consciousness which is the foundation to Innate Health.

Just like the weather, where we don’t tend to ponder and fret over when a dark/gloomy day will brighten up, as G-od enables nature to take its course, similarly our thoughts are designed to fleet as long as we don’t intervene by giving them too much attention which would innocently cause the ‘bad weather’ to stay.

If the concept of Innate Health is fully understood, there are no boundaries as to its affect - no matter how chronic a person’s suffering is. This is because however extreme a person’s mental state may be - s/he has the capacity to access a healthy state of mind which will naturally allow the individual to experience life in a totally different way. The beauty about learning about Innate Health is that; One is not encouraged to ‘work’ on reaching the ultimate state of mind; in fact if one tries too hard it will be counter-productive. Rather it is a gentle process of stepping outside of what you already know to learn something new have an insight.

It is a simple explanation of the workings of the entire spectrum of our mental and psychological lives and sheds light on the synergy of our spiritual and human natures.

The potential is endless, as regards reaching new heights, as there is no end to the infinite potential latent inside the human psyche.

Yeshivas Torah Temima, is the new Yeshiva Ketana opening in Manchester this coming Ellul.

The Yeshiva will cater for the growing number of boys graduating high school throughout England who are looking for a moisad that will give them a strong hadracha in learning in a unique, warm and geshmake environment. The Yeshiva aims to attract boys who have been successful in school and are motivated to advance in Torah, yiras shamayim and middos tovos through a personal kesher with their rebbeim. The hanhola will give special emphasis to the personal development of each individual bochur, building them with confidence and self-esteem whilst laying foundations for a life of Torah values.

CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO THE HANHOLA?

The Yeshiva will be led by its prominent Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Aryeh Masher together with Rabbi Yisroel Chaim Roth, who have established the core of the moisad, joined by the experienced mechanech Rabbi Yaakov Rubin from Yerusholayim.

Harav Aryeh Masher shlita, currently Rosh Kollel of Nachlas Dovid – Whitefield, is a well known and highly respected Talmid Chochom in Manchester.

His vast knowledge, clarity and passion for learning, combined with his warm and unassuming personality will no doubt be transmitted to his Talmidim.

Rabbi Yisroel Chaim Roth shlita from Manchester is a popular and well respected Talmid Chochom.

He is fondly known for his in depth havono and clarity in learning, which he has received from his illustrious Rebbeim, Harav Meir Stern shlita and Harav Avrohom Yehoshua Soloveitchick shlita. His profound understanding of people has given him the unique ability to influence and inspire others.

Rabbi Yaakov Rubin shlita of Yerushalayim is an outstanding Talmid Chochom, whose enthusiasm and love of Torah is generated to all those in his surroundings. Rabbi Rubin’s deep understanding both of learning and of people has gained him much popularity amongst English speaking bochurim.

Rabbi Rubin, originally from Gateshead Yeshiva under Harav Avrohom Gurwicz shlita and has spent over two decades becoming a close Talmid of Harav Dovid Soloveitchik Shlita.

The Hanhola have recently appointed Rabbi Shloime Zalmen Rosenbaum shlita from Telstone (originally from Melbourne, Australia), as the Menahel, to ensure the smooth running of all aspects of the Yeshiva, including responsibility for the Yeshiva’s finances. Additionally he will be taking an active part in the Beis hamedrash, giving the bochurim the opportunity to benefit from his high standard of learning, warm personality and selfless concern for others.

His unique abilities and years of experience in organisation and fundraising, together with his prominent level of learning makes him the ideal candidate for this demanding position.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BOYS WHO HAVE ALREADY ENROLLED IN THE YESHIVA?

The yeshiva has attracted a strong core of bochurim who have a high standard in learning and are motivated to advance in Torah and yiras shomayim.

WHAT WILL THE DAILY SCHEDULE OF THE YESHIVA BE?

The seder hayom has been carefully structured to cater specifically for bochurim of Yeshiva Ketana age, including the length and formation of the

sedorim. Both morning and afternoon sedorim will be approximately two hours long, which is the recommended length for bochurim of this age.

The Maggid Shiur will be present during the entire sedorim, guiding the bochurim in the best way to utilise the seder and assisting them to plough their way through the sugya, enabling them to come to shiur well versed in Gemara, Rashi and Tosfos. The magid shiur iyun will be present during the seder iyun and the magid shiur bekius during seder bekius. In addition the Rosh Yeshiva will be present during afternoon and evening sedorim.

WHAT WILL THE SHABBOS PROGRAM BE AT THE YESHIVA?

There will be a full shabbos program including Tefillos, Sedorim and meals, with the

bochurim having the opportunity to join the hanhola for a weekly oneg shabbos with divrei Torah on the parshah, divrei chizuk and nigunim.

WHAT ABOUT DAILY MEALS AND ACCOMODATION?

The yeshiva will cater for all its talmidim’s gashmius requirements including sleeping accommodations and 3 daily nutritious meals

ARE THERE ANY OTHER ASPECTS OF THE YESHIVA THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

In order to enhance the ruach of the beis hamedrash and to contribute to its maturity, there will be a kibbutz of older bochurim joining the yeshiva for the first year. This kibbutz will be composed of bochurim leaving English yeshivas or

already learning in Eretz Yisrael.

In addition the yeshiva hopes to establish a small chaburah of avreichim who will learn alongside the bochurim.
