The Power of Focus
In 1950, Japan was an obliterated nation. It had lost more working aged males per capita than any other country during World War 2. In short it’s economy was in ruins. The heads of state convened and decided that by the end of the decade their country would be the world leader in textiles. By the end of the 1950’s that was so. In 1960 they decided that by the end of the decade they would lead the world in steel. Again they achieved their mark. 1970’s automobiles, 1980’s electronics. So what exactly did they do right? The answer can be found in a study done at Yale University. Graduates of Yale Business School were given a survey in 1953. Have you got specific goals in mind for your future business? Are they measurable and have you got deadlines for each stage? Only 3% of the graduates had specific plans. 20 years older in 1973 the year group were interviewed again. Remarkably, it was found that the 3% who had specific plans had earned more than the 97% put together. So if goal setting is the key to progress why doesn’t everybody do it? The great naturalist Jean Henri Fabre conducted an experiment in 1898 with some processionary caterpillars, so called simply because they follow each other. He lined them up in a circle around the inside of a flower pot and placed their favourite food, pine needles in the centre of the circle. After 7 days of following each other they dropped dead from hunger within 6 inches of their ideal food source!
Our ability to focus on our goals requires that we take the time to do what most people don’t do most of the time. Think for ourselves. Step outside the crowd. We are constantly being bombarded with other people’s agendas from the moment we wake to the moment we get to sleep. Take a few moments to decide what you want from the day, week, month and year and your entire destiny will shift. Knowing how to set specific, powerful, motivating goals is the key to harnessing your own resources and to exponentially multiplying your business growth. There are incredible systems for goal setting and managing your most precious resource, time, to earn you the greatest fruits. Why do we crave food?
Zoë Harcombe, will tell us about three very common medical conditions that cause incredible food cravings. Apparently we are not greedy or weakwilled – some ailments are causing our overeating! WHY DO WE CRAVE FOOD? When we start a calorie-controlled diet we do the following: 1) We increase the proportion of carbohydrates in our diet; 2) We reduce the variety of food eaten; 3) We weaken our immune systems. These three things then cause Candida, Food Intolerance and Hypoglycaemia – three very common medical conditions that cause insatiable food cravings. So – start a calorie controlled diet and end up a food addict. Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight! Let’s define these three conditions: Candida – is a yeast, which lives in all of us, and is normally kept under control by our immune system and other bacteria in our body. If it stays in balance, it causes no harm. If it multiplies out of control, it can create havoc with our health. People suffering from Candida crave bread, cheese, pickled foods, sugar and all sweet substances. Sounds familiar? Food Intolerance – means, quite simply, not being able to tolerate a particular food. Food Intolerance develops when you have too much of a food, too often, and your body just gets to the point where it can’t cope with that food any longer. Food Intolerance can make a person feel horribly unwell. You will crave anything you are intolerant to – the most common intolerances are wheat (bread, biscuits, cakes); milk (cheese; ice cream) and sugar (sweets, chocolate, cakes etc) Hypoglycaemia – literally means low blood sugar. When your blood sugar levels are too low, this is potentially life threatening and your body will try to get you to eat. People suffering this condition crave any carbohydrate – even fruit and fruit juices. 1) If you count calories you will increase the proportion of carbohydrates in your diet because carbohydrates are lower in calories than fat. (Fat has nine calories per gram while carbohydrate only has four). On any low calorie/low fat diet, your basic diet foods will be fruit, crisp breads, salads, cereal bars, maybe cereal like “Special K”® – all carbohydrates. Steak, oily fish, cheese, milk, olive oil and other fats will barely get a mention in any calorie-controlled diet.
Carbohydrates feed Candida; they are amongst the most common food intolerances and Hypoglycaemia is only impacted by carbohydrates. You can start to see why any diet that leads you to eat more carbs is not a good idea... 2) The second thing that we do, when we start a calorie-controlled diet, is to reduce the variety of foods eaten. We tend to go for the regular favourites that give us ‘the biggest bang for the buck’ (the most food for the fewest calories). We probably have a set breakfast – our calorie counted bread, or cereal – every day. We have a set lunch also – a shop bought calorie-counted ready meal or calorie counted sandwich or cereal bar. We may vary the evening meal a bit more, but it is still likely to have the same ingredients in it and always more carbs than fats. The key condition that this impacts is Food Intolerance – as this is literally defined as eating too much of the same thing too often. The carbs eaten as the ‘biggest bang for the buck’ also feed Candida and impact Hypoglycaemia. 3) The third thing that we do when we count calories is to weaken our immune systems. This happens simply because we are not eating as much fuel as our bodies need so we are denying our bodies energy, essential fats and other nutrients. When we weaken our immune systems, we lay ourselves wide open to these three conditions and we start craving bread, sweets, pizza, cereal and all the things that ruin our diets. So, more often than not, you start a diet and end up a food addict. When you get to the point that you crave food as strongly as others crave alcohol or cigarettes, you have no chance of losing weight. Hypnotherapy Tips for Better Sleep
How do you sleep? Do you find it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep or wakeup at the right time? Insomnia and poor sleep affects at least 10% of the population at any time. I see many clients with disturbed sleep. Not only does a lack of sleep leave you feeling tired, it can affect your work and relationships and of course may lead to lost tempers and feeling grumpy. Lack of sleep can have many causes, sometimes from a medical condition, medication, poor diet and lifestyle, stress or from experiencing nightmares or pain. If you experience sleepless nights for a few weeks, it is of course important to speak with your GP.
4) Look at your bedroom. Is it a relaxing, tidy, cozy haven of security and comfort? Consider moving the position of your furniture, or redecorating the room so it is a really welcoming, relaxing, sleep inducing space. 5) Leave the day’s troubles at the door and

don’t bring them to bed with you. I often spend a lot of time with clients on this. Put simply, just remind yourself what you should be doing right now. Right now it’s time for sleeping and it’s getting late! Now is not the time for resolving the world’s problems, thinking about that meeting tomorrow or how you will arrange this or that event etc. Instead make a note to schedule in time for those other concerns, by choosing a time tomorrow, when you will set aside time to think about those concerns, a time when you are fresh and alert.

Avoid also eating or drinking caffeinated drinks too close to bed. Alcohol consumption may also affect the quality of your sleep. Allow yourself to relax before going to bed. 3) Turn off all gadgets such as your laptop
or tablet computer well before bedtime. At my hypnotherapy practice, I have noticed that many clients find tablet computers and smartphones stimulate rather than relax and sleep becomes disturbed as a result. As part of winding down at the end of the day, turn off all gadgets at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
